Removing Power Cord Makes Windows 7 Crashes Hard At Reboot

Feb 3, 2012

When I remove the power cord of a cpu while working, it often makes windows 7 crashes hard. When that happens, Windows 7 by default makes a system restore. Since we don't want that, we removed this option. Since the system restore has been desactivated, Windows 7 reboot over and over again. I have to reinstall. Sometimes, even the safe mode is not working. This scenario does not happen every time because sometimes Windows 7 succeeds in "getting back" online.

Power Cord On Desktop Keeps Melting

Nov 11, 2012

I have a Phillips desktop machine which up to a few weeks ago was running fine. 4 weeks back I was running a virus scan and left the machine alone only to return an hour later and find the machine off and the power cord at the back completely melted at the connector. After an initial panick I replaced the cord and the machine booted up again and ran absolutely fine.4 weeks have passed now and today I noticed a burning smell whilst the computer was on and I noticed the power cord was starting to seriously melt again.

Buy Plug Adapter Or New Power Cord For Travel?

Jul 14, 2012

I am traveling to Hong Kong in a couple of months. My HP laptop is from the US. It has an external power brick that takes 100-240V.My question is about the cord that goes from the power brick to the wall outlet. The cord has a US plug. Does the cord also take 100-240V and I just need to buy a plug adapter, or does the cord only take US voltage and I need to buy a new cord?

Laptop Restarts 50% Of Time When Power Cord Comes Out

Feb 25, 2012

I have had this issue for a while with my Dell Studio XPS 1645 laptop. It is a guess, but i'd say 5/10 times the power cord comes out of the laptop (for whatever reason - moving it etc) then the laptop will simply black screen and instantly restart and boot up again without an error message or any information as to why. This doesn't make any sense to me because every time I do have the battery pack inserted into the laptop and over 30% battery life (this is when ill plug the charger in).

Whenever Reboot Windows Makes A Temp Pagefile System

Jan 19, 2012

I recently had a problem with reformatting a partition. It was solved by relocating the pagefile.sys.

Now whenever I boot upon login it says the system has made a temp pagefile system. I try adjusting the size of the pagefile system to much more, less, or equal to amount of ram (4gb). Doesn't seem to solve it.

dropbox has stopped working too; it seems like that malfunction may be related to the pagefilesys

Random Power Off / Power On / Reboot Events

May 2, 2012

Over the past 2 years my PC has been afflicted with random power off/power on/reboot events. It will go for months without these and then have multiples of the events in a day. (I had 8 of them 3 days ago.)I assume I have a hardware problem, but nothing has been found and I'm grasping at straws. The time between power off and power on is several seconds.I had assumed this rules out a software cause, but maybe I'm wrong. I know Windows can schedule a power off, but can it tell BIOS (or something) to power back on in a few seconds?I know blaming the power supply is a much more simple explanation, but then I'm left with explaining the intermittent nature of the failure.

Windows 7 Crashes & Reboot On Startup

Jun 17, 2012

My wife's PC refused to reboot about a week ago and after many attempts we eventually gave up trying to recover it and reinstalled from scratch. The history of that is over here. WIN7 won't boot. What should I do before trying a clean install? The PC was rebuilt with Windows 7 64 OEM and because my system disk is only 80GB I followed the directions from this post to locate the user and user apps data folders on the other disk. User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation, Windows update has now installed over 150 updates including SP1 and rebooted successfully many times along the way. However this morning at powerup the PC crashed back to black and rebooted twice before successfully starting up. It has now run quite happily all day. What should I do to monitor what is happening and capture as much info as possible so that if this happens again I capture what is going wrong?

Windows 7 X64 Crashes On Setup Reboot?

May 24, 2011

We have a new build for a friend's Media Center, and for the first time ever with Windows 7, I am having an issue with the installation that I can not isolate.

The System:

AMD Phenom II X4 955
Gigabyte 8900GPA-UD3H
2 x Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (KHX1600C9D3B1K2/4GX)
4x Seagate 1.5GB SATAII ST31500341AS (in RAID 5)
LITE-ON SATA CD/DVD Burner (iHAS124-04)
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 X64

We tried installing to multiple system drives, and they all end up completing the installation, rebooting, but reboot just as the flag starts to cycle in. no BSOD, no error messages, just reboots every time. Safe mode gets as far as achix64s.sys, (which leads us to think some kind of drive/er or controller issue) then reboots.

We have tried:

setting the BIOS to all available combinations of RAID, AHCI, and IDE modes

Updated drivers (even though Windows 7 has recognized all the drives right off)

isolated all the memory sticks 1 by 1

different cables, drives, and PSU

swapped the mouse pad, just in case...

We also each went over it separately to eliminate potential PEBKAC, but each got the same results.

Windows 7 64bit Crashes After First Reboot Following Install

Gigabyte GV-N98TSL-1GB Fanless 9800GT 1GB GDDR3 PCI-E
Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3 (rev 1.0)
Processor: AMD K2 2800MHz
Corsair: 2 x 2GB 1066MHz DDR3
HDD: Seagate 2 x 2TB ST32000542AS

Memory has been testing using program from [URL].I'm trying to install Windows 7 64-bit.I built another machine with the same motherboard, processor and RAM which works fine. The differences being between the two machines the Harddisks and Graphics card.On the machine Im having problems with I have two Seagate ST32000542AS 2TB setup as RAID harddisks and a Gigabyte graphics card.Windows 7 installs but after the first boot from the HDD it displays "Starting Windows" and then resets or displays the blue crash screen. I tried running in safe mode list drivers as it is booting. After disk.sys is loaded the computer freezes.Ive tried using the latest AMD RAID drivers from the gigabyte website for this motherboard during the installation, but now Im starting to think this maybe a graphics card driver problem are there any known issues with the Gigabyte graphics card Im using and Windows 7?Is there a way of loading the Graphics card driver automatically.

I came back to it this morning at it looks like it had rebooted.I have the PC set for "install updates automatically" (the default setting) I believe this will reboot the PC at around 3am.1) Is there a way to check that the PC rebooted via Windows Update, as opposed to a power bump/outage?2) Would a power bump during Windows Update corrupt Windows 7 somehow? I checked Windows Update and it looks like there are no FAILED updates.

THEN it boots up, and when it does it says: "Resuming Windows" and what bothers me then is the boot-time...it's taking almost 4-5 minutes ( normally around 30 seconds boot ) just to boot it up then, after a while it then works fine again...once again, theese "reboots" are completely random... happens rarely, perhaps once a month.ay ideas?*EDIT*Forgot to say that i reinstalled windows recently ( 4-5 weeks ago ) to try and see if anything changed...it didn't.Specs:Intel Core2 Duo, E8500ATI Radeon 4800 Series4gb DDR2 RAMWindows 7 x64 Ultimate SP1

Internet Connection Problems After Reboot Or Power Up

Jan 23, 2010

Every time I power on my PC, or reboot, my Internet connection does not work for a few mins. Windows loads with out errors and shows the little blue circle on my Network Icon. Then the icon goes to a red x for a few mins, then goes to a Yellow triangle thing and then it goes away. After that the Internet works fine. Also, about every other day I get packet loss and random disconnects.

This is my network setup.

1. Windows 7 professional 64bit PC and an Acer Windows Vista 64bit home premium Laptop.

2. ASUS P5QL PRO LGA 775 motherboard with most current Network driver from Asus website.

3. D-Link DIR-655 Draft 2 Xtreme N Gigabit Wireless Router running from my cable modem to my PC and spitting wireless to my house. The wireless never seems to have a problem. I have not updated the firmware because of brick fears.

4. I have a Motorola SURFboard® Cable Modem SB5100. I own it and it's from about 2004. Not sure if that matters.

Troubleshooting I've done.

1. Unplugged the cable modem.
2. Updated the mobo LAN driver from ASUS website.
3. Rebooted Wireless router.
4. Plugged and unplugged all network jacks to make sure they are in tight.
5. Checked that cable is tightly screwed into cable jack in wall and in back of cable modem.
6. When the internet connection drops or shows packet loss I do the Ipconfig/release and Ipconfig/renew.

It's almost like after every reboot Windows 7 looses my network info and has to re-detect it all over again. It is really odd.

Kernel-power Event 41 Task 63 - Pc Random Reboot

Jun 10, 2012

Built a new pc last month:

i5 2400
Asus P8H61-M-LE USB3
8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM
Asus GTX560
Kingston SSD 64GB
320 GB WD Blue
Corsair HX620 PSU

All parts are new except: SSD, HDD, and PSU.

PC would reboot itself randomly and the event viewer says kernel-power event 41 task 63. My biggest hunch is the PSU because there was one time just after I built the PC, it would not turn on when power button was pressed. MOBO status light was lit. Tried shorting out the actual power pins on the MOBO but still did not turn it on. It would also sometimes turn on then off then on again by itself.

Also whenever I'm in CMOS setup, the various voltages seem to be unstable, it would go up and down by +/- .002 or something like that.

Because of those two points plus the PSU is already used and old (was prev used in a server which ran 24/7) I reckon it's the PSU. But before I go buying a new PSU, I thought I'd get your opinions.

Laptop With Windows 7 Won't Shutdown With/without Cord

I recently installed Windows 7 on it, and it will not power down or go into hibernate mode without being on external power. When I tell it to hibernate or shut down it will power the screen down, but thats as far as it will go without being plugged in. All of the lights stay on (volume control buttons, wifi indicator, etc.), the hard drive continues to run, and it will stay like this until I plug it in, at which point it will finish its power-down or hibernation.

Computer Freezes - Have To Hard Reboot,?

Feb 20, 2013

i've recently built a mid-range system & game wise it's great, but i've been having the same issue.

intel core i7 920 2.66ghz
6gb patriot g series 1600mhz ram 9-9-9-24
320gb 7200rpm seagate barracuda sata hdd
his radeon hd6850 iceq x turbo
corsair h50 hydro series

the issue i'm having is that sometimes, during a Internet video, an online streamed video, photo-editing or even browsing pictures in my pictures, everything suddenly freezes, i can't move the mouse, keyboard, the screen remains frozen on whatever it was on at that time, and even after waiting it doesn't come back to life and i have to reboot.. on the rare occasion it comes back to life, it does so with a 'beep' i've tried re-formatting completely, to no avail. i've ran a disk check, an sfc in dos, several memtests, defragging and i've purchased a new psu, updated my bios, chipset, and all other drivers but i just can't get it to stop.. i am at a complete loss. all of these tests provided positive results, no errors. i've monitored my temps and my gpu idle at 34 with a high end of 62 when fully gaming, and my cpu idles at 37 and never goes past 60 when fully gaming, does anyone have any idea at all? the only ones i have remaining are that the hard drive is on the way out, but it doesn't make sense because the disk check reports zero errors.

Occasional Hard Crashes?

Jun 8, 2012

I fairly recently got a new computer, and started w/ windows 7. I have since had the very occasional unexplained hard crash. Most of them occur when I'm not present. I did try to install ProTools 8, which was a complete failure, and caused a few hard crashes, but that's the only thing I know of that's a direct cause. I've since given up on ProTools, both because I'm sick of it, and it seems there's no reliable driver for the Mbox (which is also fine with me). Obviously, hard crashes concern me, but I have no idea how to go about determining the source.I have:

Windows 7 Ultimate
AMD FX-4100 Quad Core

Gigabyte MB (and I can never seem to find a model number when I need it, but can keep digging if need be)
Nvidea Geoforce 9800 GTX+
8GB RAM

I don't do a whole lot with it. Normal interneting and stuff, and some recording programs (audition mostly), all just via line ins and line outs. I'm kinda just stuck restarting when bad things happen. They've been rare enough that I've just shrugged and moved on, but repeated hard crashes probably shouldn't be ignored, so...

Completely Locks Up, Hard Reboot Required After 30-40 Sec From Startup

Nov 21, 2011

I recently (about 4-5 months ago, so not very recently) upraded my system to Windows 7 64bit from Vista. Ever since then my computer has had issues where it locks up completely (unable to move the mouse, whatever sound was playing at the time loops) and a hard reboot is required in order to bring it back to order.

It usually wasn't a huge problem before, but for some reason it willl now proceed to lock-up within about 30-40 seconds of booting up the computer, after the desktop loads. I tried disconnecting my second hard-drive (I had bought a new one to install Windows 7 on, and kept the old one plugged in) but that didn't make a difference.

It seems to boot fine in safemode, but I have no idea what the problem could be.

System specs:

Screen Freezes Randomly, Requires Hard Reboot?

May 11, 2012

Ok, so I am going to try to explain this as thorougly as possible while trying not to sound like an idiot in the process. I am by no means computer savvy so anyone that has any advice will more than likely need to talk to me like a 5th grader. I am ok with that. Since installing a Windows Update about a month ago, my screen will randomly lock up. At times it will clear itself after a couple of seconds and state something to the effect that "display driver amd has stopped working and recovered." Other times it will stay frozen for about 10 minutes and then will start functioning properly again. More often than not though, it will stay frozen indefinitely and require a hard reboot. This happens during mundane activities. No extreme gaming going on. Generally it is while just browsing the net. It tends to happen more often to my wife who uses it during the day to work through a VPN. I don't believe there is any correlation though. I have read multiple forums on the web and have tried several things, from cleaning the registry to uninstalling the driver software and reinstalling it in safe mode. The latter seemed to work last night but today my wife started having the same issue again.

Hard Crashes Caused By Steam Games

Aug 3, 2012

Today, i have discovered that only certain games in my steam library causes crashes. However, when i google this problem, the only threads i see describe simple game crashes that merely take you back to the desktop. This does not compare to my crashes, which end up being a hard computer freeze, only curable by a click of the reset button on my tower..Note that i play Diablo 3, Battlefield 3, and SWTOR perfectly normal and as far as steam games go i can play the original Counter Strike, Skyrim, and a few other i believe. The only 2 games so far that i have had this same problem with is LOTR War in the North and recently i got the CS/GO beta and that crashes as well. Another characteristic of these crashes is that they occur on startup, As soon as the first image of the startup shows on my screen, I am given that circular ring as a cursor, then a second later it stops revolving and my entire pc is frozen and unresponsive. I tried running steam as an administrator, the only difference was that i had control of the mouse a few moments longer before it froze again, but this time it was an actual cursor.
