Completely Locks Up, Hard Reboot Required After 30-40 Sec From Startup

Nov 21, 2011

I recently (about 4-5 months ago, so not very recently) upraded my system to Windows 7 64bit from Vista. Ever since then my computer has had issues where it locks up completely (unable to move the mouse, whatever sound was playing at the time loops) and a hard reboot is required in order to bring it back to order.

It usually wasn't a huge problem before, but for some reason it willl now proceed to lock-up within about 30-40 seconds of booting up the computer, after the desktop loads. I tried disconnecting my second hard-drive (I had bought a new one to install Windows 7 on, and kept the old one plugged in) but that didn't make a difference.

It seems to boot fine in safemode, but I have no idea what the problem could be.

System specs:
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110622-1506)
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) 9550 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series

Laptop Freezes (completely Locks Up) When Playing A Video

Dec 28, 2012

this first started occurring on monday the 24th, i played a Internet video on firefox and the video lagged with a black screen on the first 1-2 seconds of the video. at around 3 seconds, everything stopped. my cursor, the video, the whole laptop etc. the time was no longer moving on the video and my system time wasn't changing either so i concluded that my laptop was frozen. i waited it out and there was nothing i could do but hold down the power button in an attempt to try and turn.at this point i'm still able to watch Internet videos on chrome perfectly, however... playing a video file from my hard drive produces the same problem. i've tried playing files from both wmp and vlc player, and the same thing happened both times.what i've tried:

- uninstalled and then re-installed my display driver
- i tried a system restore yesterday and got a bsod before my laptop even got to shut down
- i did a successful system restore to the 22nd via safe mode
- searched the web for solutions but couldn't find anything
-reinstalling windows (i'm in the middle of doing uni work atm so i'm trying to avoid this)
-buying a new laptop (when i get the money)

may be useful:

-i was getting quite a few "low ram" messages from the system on the day that it first occurred, before it first occurred. haven't seen anymore of them, however.
-playing 3gp and mp3 files on wmp is fine

Sound Locks Up Requires Reboot

Jun 15, 2009

Very often the sound on my system seems to get "locked up" after listening to music (MediaMonkey) or watching a movie (VLC or WMP) and there after when I attempt to play a video or listen to music, the progress bar won't move and videos won't play.

It's as though the resources lock on one program and aren't released. I suspect it might be due to my using an M-audio Audiophile 2496.

The only way to release it is to reboot. When I do so whatever has it locked releases in time to play the closing chime. After reboot the sound works normally - for a while.

Oh yeah, closing the program (MediaMonkey or whatever) doesn't have any effect.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Locks Up Everytime Reboot

Jan 19, 2012

I have been having this problem for about 2 weeks. I have tried disabling various services but have not had any luck narrowing it down. I have attached the Dump & System files. I am unable to create a System Health Report since it cannot be created in Safe Mode and my computer locks up before I can create it in normal windows.

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite L675D Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit w/ SP1 OEM. It's about 1.5 years old.

After First Required Reboot Issue

I've gotten the Windows 7 RC 7100 x86 iso burned to a DvD. I have a spare HDD (30gb). I unplugged my main (XP) HDD so I wouldn't have an conflicting problems (if any) during the install.

I put in the CD and rebooted. I booted from the CD and went through the install process. It all went well, no problems, it made its main partition with the reserved system partition on the HDD.

Windows 7 Won't Boot / Startup Just Locks Up Or Resets

Sep 18, 2012

I cant get my Windows 7 to start up. I'm not sure if this is my PCs problem or windows. It starts up, gives me the ASUS screen where I can go into setup (though messing around in it hasn't helped yet). otherwise it goes to black screen where I can choose start windows normally or launch troubleshoot. if I pick start normally the windows logo comes up, loads, tursn black, and resets the PC. If I choose troubleshoot, it goes black for several minutes, shows the Windows 7 BG, and just gets stuck there. I'm not sure what to try to get it to boot.

Windows 7 Occaisionally Freezes On Startup And Locks Up In Desktop?

Dec 7, 2012

To start off here is my system:

CPU: I-7 930
RAM: 12GB
HDD: 500GB WD Blue
Power Supply: 750W Thermaltake
AMD Radeon HD5900

I can take pictures of my system later tonight. My issue is that when I boot my computer, sometimes Windows 7 will get start at the Win 7 glowing icon (startup screen). When it locks up there is no HDD activity. Occaisionally, after power cycling the desktop a couple of times it will get into the windows desktop. Sometimes I can do a few things but then it will lock up and either be really slow or it will lockup, then unlock, lockup, then unlock. When I boot into safe mode with networking everything seems okay and I don't experience any lockups. Now all of this never used to happen. I recently moved (for a job) and a company had packed up and shipped my desktop PC. They had packed it really well. But before the desktop was shipped everything seemed to work fine. When I unboxed it and setting it up in my new place is when it started behaving this way.

After Around 5 Minutes Of Working After Startup, Windows 7 Completely Freezes

Nov 17, 2012

I've been using my Dell Inspiron 17R for around 2 months ago and it's a fantastic laptop, I mainly use it for videogames, music and movies/TV shows and it has ran flawlessly thus far.

Starting yesterday however, problems began to occur. I could boot the laptop up as per usual and access the Internet, play games, watch movies etc. but after around 5 minutes everything would suddenly become unresponsive. Both my mouse and trackpad wouldn't allow me to click at all, I could however move the mouse around the screen completely fine. The keyboard would also not work - I tried opening the task manager via Ctrl+Alt+Del as well as closing windows with Alt+F4 or trying to shutdown via the Windows key and nothing would work. Instead the cursor would change to the "loading" symbol and it would pretty much just do nothing.

The first time this happened I was browsing the Internet and it just got stuck on "Waiting for Cache" or something to that likeliness, I then noticed the rotating circle that shows a page loading had also halted and was then forced to reboot manually as I couldn't even click the Windows button. Another test I tried was watching a downloaded video - it literally just stopped playing around 4 minutes in. The screen just halted on a single frame even though the pause button hadn't been pressed - trying to click anything didn't work (as usual).

I tried rebooting it multiple times (I was sadly forced to use the power button) and it began to repeat every single time. It would work for a few minutes before completely freezing (minus the ability to pointlessly move the mouse around the screen). Occasionally a window would pop up above the task bar saying that the "Microsoft Windows application has become unresponsive". Sometimes the taskbar would then disappear and the laptop would shut itself down but the end result was always the same.

I found that the same problem did not occur when booting in Safe Mode with Networking, however there was some noticeable slowdown. I downloaded and used many anti-viruses/malware to scan my machine and I'm almost positive that there is nothing of the such on the computer (although in all fairness, the scans were running so slowly I could only make it to about 20% on each before giving up). Other solutions I've tried included:

1. Manually ending high memory usage tasks via the manager
2. Using CCleaner to fix my registry in Safe Mode
3. Left the laptop off overnight in a hope it would just fix itself
4. Unplugged everything from the ports of the laptop
5. Rebooted via the Restart, Shutdown and power buttons

BSOD On Startup, Several Startups And Repairs Required To Boot Windows?

Jul 7, 2012

This is my first custom built computer. I've had the same similar problem for the past year. I have continuous problems starting up and BSOD. My computer will not start up properly at times. It also seems like this problem happens if my computer is off, not in sleep mode, for longer than 24 hours. It involves several restarts. I've checked my hard drive and memory for bad sectors and not found anything. I've run both the memtest and the windows memory test several times and found no problems. There was one post I found on a seperate site that talked about ASRock m/b having problem with Ram voltage so I've manually changed the BIOS to be the voltage required for the Ram. Seemed like it fixed it temporarily but quickly started getting more BSOD.Recently updated AMD drivers and was completely unable to get into Windows. Windows 7 Crashes & Reboot On Startup

Jun 17, 2012

My wife's PC refused to reboot about a week ago and after many attempts we eventually gave up trying to recover it and reinstalled from scratch. The history of that is over here. WIN7 won't boot. What should I do before trying a clean install? The PC was rebuilt with Windows 7 64 OEM and because my system disk is only 80GB I followed the directions from this post to locate the user and user apps data folders on the other disk. User Profiles - Create and Move During Windows 7 Installation, Windows update has now installed over 150 updates including SP1 and rebooted successfully many times along the way. However this morning at powerup the PC crashed back to black and rebooted twice before successfully starting up. It has now run quite happily all day. What should I do to monitor what is happening and capture as much info as possible so that if this happens again I capture what is going wrong?

Asus Laptop Hangs / Freezes - Hard Reset Required

Mar 7, 2011

I have an Asus G73JH-BST7 Laptop and recently it's been freezing. For the past two months it has had issues with programs hanging for 1-3 minutes then quickly responding again. About a week ago the laptop began to freeze and wouldn't come back and would required a hard restart. I decided to make use of my warranty and took it into a geek squad store. They told me they ran chkdsk and "other" tests to check the HDD and it passed all the tests and they couldn't "Replicate" the problem. So, I took the laptop back and it's still hanging/freezing. Whats the best way to go about diagnosing this?

Blue Screen At Startup After Canceling Disk Check By Manual Reboot

Jul 2, 2011

My Windows 7 needs to getting past a blue screen at start-up after I restarted during a slow diskcheck I scheduled. The screen suggests disabling or uninstalling any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. It says to run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart the computer. I already tried safe mode but even that gives me the same blue screen. I assume the computer wants me to continue the disk check it started, but how? Restarting doesn't continue the disk check because it's been canceled with ESC. Is there any way for me to enter a command prompt so that I can type CHKDSK /F? I just want to cancel any problems causing this blue screen, whether that means forcing a disk check somehow or turning it off somehow. The stop number is 0x00000024.

Computer Freezes - Have To Hard Reboot,?

Feb 20, 2013

i've recently built a mid-range system & game wise it's great, but i've been having the same issue.

320gb 7200rpm seagate barracuda sata hdd
his radeon hd6850 iceq x turbo
corsair h50 hydro series

the issue i'm having is that sometimes, during a Internet video, an online streamed video, photo-editing or even browsing pictures in my pictures, everything suddenly freezes, i can't move the mouse, keyboard, the screen remains frozen on whatever it was on at that time, and even after waiting it doesn't come back to life and i have to reboot.. on the rare occasion it comes back to life, it does so with a 'beep' i've tried re-formatting completely, to no avail. i've ran a disk check, an sfc in dos, several memtests, defragging and i've purchased a new psu, updated my bios, chipset, and all other drivers but i just can't get it to stop.. i am at a complete loss. all of these tests provided positive results, no errors. i've monitored my temps and my gpu idle at 34 with a high end of 62 when fully gaming, and my cpu idles at 37 and never goes past 60 when fully gaming, does anyone have any idea at all? the only ones i have remaining are that the hard drive is on the way out, but it doesn't make sense because the disk check reports zero errors.

Screen Freezes Randomly, Requires Hard Reboot?

May 11, 2012

Ok, so I am going to try to explain this as thorougly as possible while trying not to sound like an idiot in the process. I am by no means computer savvy so anyone that has any advice will more than likely need to talk to me like a 5th grader. I am ok with that. Since installing a Windows Update about a month ago, my screen will randomly lock up. At times it will clear itself after a couple of seconds and state something to the effect that "display driver amd has stopped working and recovered." Other times it will stay frozen for about 10 minutes and then will start functioning properly again. More often than not though, it will stay frozen indefinitely and require a hard reboot. This happens during mundane activities. No extreme gaming going on. Generally it is while just browsing the net. It tends to happen more often to my wife who uses it during the day to work through a VPN. I don't believe there is any correlation though. I have read multiple forums on the web and have tried several things, from cleaning the registry to uninstalling the driver software and reinstalling it in safe mode. The latter seemed to work last night but today my wife started having the same issue again.
