Whenever Reboot Windows Makes A Temp Pagefile System

Jan 19, 2012

I recently had a problem with reformatting a partition. It was solved by relocating the pagefile.sys.

Now whenever I boot upon login it says the system has made a temp pagefile system. I try adjusting the size of the pagefile system to much more, less, or equal to amount of ram (4gb). Doesn't seem to solve it.

dropbox has stopped working too; it seems like that malfunction may be related to the pagefilesys

Can Move Pagefile / TEMP And TMP Files To RAMDISK

Jan 8, 2013

I'm trying to optimize performace of my SSDs.Can I move Pagefile, TEMP and TMP files to my Ramdisk? I already moved interenet cache.I have 32GB of memory available and an 8GB ramdisk. Memory allocated to ramdisk is dynamically managed by software (Primo Ramdisk Ultimate) so only the used portion is used and not the full 8GB.

Effects Of Moving TMP/TEMP Directory & Disable Pagefile On Boot Drive

May 10, 2012

I'm using Corsair SSD as Windows 7 x64 boot drive, and I moved both User & System Variables TMP/TEMP directory to a new common TMP directory in another hdd (Drive D) & also disabled pagefile on my boot drive (but enabled it for Drive D).

Question is, what happens if I take off my hdd (Drive D and Windows 7 / applications need a temporary directory which doesn't exist anymore ? Will Windows 7 be smart enough to create a new temp dir in the original location ? I wonder if the dependancy on the hdd as TMP directory becomes critical.

About pagefile, I understand Windows 7 needs a min pagefile of 400MB on boot drive to allow memory dump. What happens if I disable pagefile on boot drive & enable it on another drive ? Will memory dump work ?

Pagefile, Temporary Int Files, Temp Files Reset After Update?

Feb 18, 2013

I have a system with 32gb DDR3-2400, a 256GB SSD and a couple of spinners. I have set up 4gb of the RAM to be used as another RAMdisk using the softperfect software. This problem has been going on for some time, but has been more of a problem since I started using the RAMdisk. Not because the RAMdisk itself isn't working well, because the stuff that is stored there keeps getting reset.I have pretty much identified that when updates are installed through windows update (either from Microsoft update or from my WSUS server), the following are reset to defaults

1. Pagefile is automatically managed and stored on the C: drive and is set to 32gb

2. The TEMP and TMP environment variables are reset to the C:users default location

3. The temporary Internet Files location is reset to the default C:users... location

There may be others that I have not discovered.I have manually set my swap file to 1024/2048 on the D: drive (a spinner), on the belief that it should rarely if ever be needed with a system equipped with 32GB of RAM. I'm certainly not inclined to waste 32GB of space on my SSD for an unused object.I have placed the TMP/TEMP files, cookies and Temporary Internet files on the RAMdisk to squeeze a little extra performance out of the system. (Yes, I know, I'm not really getting much benefit).Photoshop and a few other programs also use the RAMdisk as a scratch disk, and were the main reason I set it up in the first place. This is becoming a real pain when it gets reset as I have to manually change everything again. Anyone know a way to make windows leave settings at what I set them, instead of having it continually reset the values to what it wants? I'd prefer to have it my way. I know there will be proponents of "leave things as windows wants it".

Removing Power Cord Makes Windows 7 Crashes Hard At Reboot

Feb 3, 2012

When I remove the power cord of a cpu while working, it often makes windows 7 crashes hard. When that happens, Windows 7 by default makes a system restore. Since we don't want that, we removed this option. Since the system restore has been desactivated, Windows 7 reboot over and over again. I have to reinstall. Sometimes, even the safe mode is not working. This scenario does not happen every time because sometimes Windows 7 succeeds in "getting back" online.

Pagefile Placement On System Booting From SSD

Feb 12, 2013

I bought a PC with a quad-core system with 16Gb RAM, a 128Gb SSD C: drive and a fast 1Tb D: drive. I just discovered that I have an 18Gb C:pagefile.sys and started wondering about the pros and cons of having this paging file on my SSD C: drive. Given that I have 16Gb RAM, I could probably get away with no page file at all. I could certainly manage with the pagefile entirely on the "traditional" D: drive. Are there any guidelines on pagefile placement in the SSD era?

Can't Delete Pagefile.sys And System Volume Information

May 17, 2012

I had an additional Windows installation for testing purposes, on a different partition and now I want to delete everything associated with it because I need some free space.

Although I managed to take ownership and delete the Windows folder and few others, I can't delete System Volume Information and the pagefile.sys file.

System Volume Information - I can't get "ownership" of the files in the directory. Although I'm listed as an "owner" of the directory with "full control", when I check "Replace owner on subcontainer and objectes" I get "Access is denied" and then "Stopping propagation of the owner leads to an inconsistent state..." I think I came across this before, but I have no idea what to do. I also get "access denied" when I try to change the read-only attribute of the directory.

pagefile.sys - when I right click on it, the security tab says "The requested security information is wither unavailable or can't be displayed"

note: I can't format the partition

Can't Get Windows 7 To Reboot After Full Recovery Of The System

Feb 10, 2012

my issue is with windows 7 giving me an error message on boot up. I started having a google redirect issue on my dell laptop the other day. I though I had taken care of it with malwarebites, but suddenly while I am surfing the net the screen goes completley black and I am faced with a blue screen of death. Can't start anything. Safe mode, system repair, and system restore either freeze or get the same blue screen of death.I finally end up using the Dell system local backup that is a preloaded recovery tool on their computers, and the two burned recovery discs I made with it when I first got the pc. Using this I restore the PC to its factory setting wiping out my old files and partitions. It works! and I go through setting up windows like the first time. It loads up and is working fine. I load on some anti spyware programs scan my computer, set up the internet, and start updating windows.Once I dowload my updates and restart my computer the computer will not boot windows. I get a error that goes something like this Windows failed to start. A Recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.

2. Choose your langugae settings, and then click next

3. Click "repair your computer."

Status: 0xc000000e Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.I cant get safe mode to work. Basically my only option is to stick my recovery disk back in and repeat a factory fresh recovery and that gets my computer back working, but every time I turn it off I get the boot error. It is frustrating because I can get it to work fine otherwise. Right now I am just putting my laptop to sleep mode but I would like to be able to turn it it off without recovering windows each time!If you have any ideas that could help me that would be great. I am thinking there is some sort of lingering software/hardware incompatibility or the virus/malware altered something to make the boot up process change. I feel like there is something I could probably do or run in windows to fix this. For awhile I was thinking my hard drive was messed up, but if that was the case I would assume I would not be able to recover windows and load anti virus software on it and have everything be normal, only to not have windows restart.

System Will Reboot Instead Of Shutting Down

Feb 24, 2011

I've just built my own PC and installed Windows 7 64-bit. It was working great for the first few weeks, then about a week ago, after some Windows updates, the computer refused to shut down. When pressing the shut down button, which is set to shut down not reboot, it would reboot instead. I decided to just reinstall Windows 7 completely. It worked.Yesterday after recent updates to Win7 the computer once again stopped shutting down. Every time I try, it will begin to shut down and then will immediately reboot itself. This time the complete Win7 reinstall did nothing.

1. total reinstall (worked first time, not second time)

2. reinstall with no updates, choosing non-security and non-critical updates

3. system restore to the point of first install --still no good.

4. gone through windows itself and had it check for anything damaged and fix it

Installed Drivers On System Reboot?

Jul 20, 2012

For a few months now, whenever I boot up it seems that all of the USB ports on the computer, including the network adapter just simply won't work until I've reinstalled. What's weird is this is true for all but one USB port, which is located on the back of the case. I've kept my mouse plugged in there so whenever I need to restart I can easily reinstall the drivers... And really it's not that big of a problem or anything, it's just become an annoyance at this point, you know?'ve tried updating the drivers in question and it says they're up to date.I'm not sure what else I can do past that since I'm not that knowledgeable in this area. The drivers that are experiencing the problem I described are; "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" -and- "Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1C26"Another thing I guess I'd like to ask about since I'm making this post... I have a USB port on the front end of the PC which won't work whatsoever even after reinstalling drivers. We had a power outage a while back, and I thought maybe it could have fried it or something

Infinite Reboot System Repair Can't Fix

Sep 18, 2011

I personally still use xp pro x32 so I'm not fully up to speed with win 7.The beast, hereinafter called 'it' has started going into infinite boot ups and trying various fixes (including restoring the hives) have been unsuccessful and the original hives put back. It was originally a Vista OS and was upgraded to Windows 7. Before it went sick, AVG10 reported trojan.Redbrowser. Despite providing instructions to remove, my friend reported that the trojan had stopped doing whatever it was it did. (Hmm, I don't think so) Anyway a few days later AVG10 apparently disappeared and stopped scanning. The infinite reboot started and 'it' is now in my hands.

Won't boot 'Last known good ...'
Won't boot in safe mode
Won't boot to safe mode command prompt

Tried system repair (auto) - both from it and from Windows 7 cd - same result 2-iterations get me to login screen, leaving alone or logging in. Same result - reboot Using recovery options - system restore - attempting repairs gives unknown Bugcheck f4 params 0x3, 0x84c81c48, 0x84c81db4, 0x8201bd60 clicking finish gives a reboot but cancel gets me to 'choose a recovery tool'Using system restore gives unsuccessful - failed to extract file C:windows$Nt..from restore point. There are 3-other System Image restore points in Backups , but get message 'selected backup not found'. The backup sets are on another partition on same disk and can be seen from command prompt provided in the recovery options but I can't find a way to tell 'it' to look there.I've tried both rstrui and wbadmin from the command prompt but still can't get them to see the backups - just 'not found' errors.

Internet Missing After System Reboot?

Oct 20, 2011

with a little internet problem on a Windows 7 professional system.

Essentially, last week after an Update, I could not get back onto my driver (the hard drive is partitioned so I have a section and my other half has another). A system restore to the previous day has allowed me to access the computer again, but the internet is gone.

The OH can use the internet on the same computer (I am on his half now), so there is no fault with the modem, the cable or the internet connection per se. We have tried to restore the internet using various manual methods, but can get no further than the SetUp. At this point we get a message Error 711, and reports that the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager is not responding.

I have tried to fix this today, but cannot get onto the services to fix it - when I click on Services and go to 'run as admin', the message appears "Class not Registered". I have also had this message when trying to connect the internet by writing a manual IP address, and when looking for the IP drivers.

The OH is threatening F*kdisk which would mean I lose everything on the drive, but I do not have another solution.

No Audio, System Freezes, Even Reboot After A While

Aug 26, 2012

My HP Presario CQ62 acts strangely since last night. After playing videos and audios for a while, suddenly there is no audio when playing videos or audio clips and the system freezes and I turned it off. I just updated iTunes to the latest version and was syncing with the iPod. I also updated Avast free anti-virus to the latest version about 2 days ago. That was last night. This morning, I also experienced the same thing. I was also syncing using iTunes. I was using Chrome and after I closed it it would not start again. Then the system reboot itself. Recently I also use msconfig to uncheck HPMSGSVC.exe (and a few other options) because it was taking so much time to boot up.

What is causing this suddenly no audio problem, among others, I described. Windows froze again after I typed the last sentence. I shutdown and restart windows. This happens after 1-3 hours of use since last night.

Reboot Loop - System Restarts

Oct 22, 2009

I downloaded the student version of Windows 7. I'm running Vista business so I had to do a clean install which went fine, it went through the first two steps fine (I forget the names) and then says it needs to restart to finish.

It restarts, goes to the new windows start up screen (which looks nice), that screen goes away and then shows the cursor for about 5 seconds and then the system restarts. It'll do this for hours. I also have a DVD version of it, tried that, same story. I've tried updating drivers, unplugging everything, and hitting F8, nothing worked. Any other ideas?

System Repair Pending Which Requires Reboot To Complete

Jan 12, 2012

I rebooted into windows and then back to the disc several times and got the error each time. My computer does not have a pending.xml file. Since sfc scannow wasn't working, I tried to do a repair install (as described here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutoria [...] ml?ltr=R). I ran the compatibility check (by clicking "upgrade" after starting setup) on the windows 7 disk and it gave me this message: "Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing." Restarting, however, does not accomplish this. What can I do? It seems my main problem right now is finishing up whatever Windows thinks it needs to update on a reboot (I've rebooted many times since discovering the message.

Very Slow Cold Boot But On Reboot System Runs Normal?

Nov 25, 2010

My office system is a Dell w/ Win7 and it's been running fine up until 1 month ago. Then it started this odd behavior. On a cold boot it runs about 5x to 20x times slower than normal, almost as if it's just running on a single core locked at 5%. Boot time to hit splash screen is 2.5 to 4.5 minutes (normal is 30 secs). And once I hit return on my pwd the system continues to run in super slow motion. If I just force a reboot, select Boot Windows Normally from the trouble menu, the the system boots in 30 secs, logs in fine, and runs normally. My boss has told me that other Win7 computers he owns/operates are now doing the same thing.I've no idea what could be causing this. Hearing that other Win7 computers are doing it tends to make me believe it isn't a problem specific to this computer or even this small office network. There are no USB devices other than the mouse and keyboard and we've switched those out. We'd recently installed virus protection software, but we removed that and the problem still continues.

The only other thing I can think of, is that we recently installed a printer driver so the system could print to a Brothers laser printer attached via USB to a computer across the local network. And come to think of it, my system wouldn't even see that printer and allow driver installation until we plugged the printer directly into my system. After installation we moved the printer back, and changed the settings for the system to find the printer across the network. I'll look into uninstalling that driver next time I'm in the office.

Update: New day, new slow boot. This time I forced an early reboot and I got the option to start a Windows Startup Repair. I started that, skipped doing a System Restore and let it run. Finally it came back with all tests fine except the following which crashed: System Files Integrity Check and Repair , Failed , Error Code #0x490 , Time Taken = 541573 ms. So it looks like the test that checks for problems crashed, leaving me to wonder if there might still be some hidden problem. And yet reboots run perfectly normal.

System Doesn't Wake After Sleep Or Hibernate - Must Do Hard Reboot

Oct 6, 2011

I had my laptop for about 5 months running OEM Win 7 home premium 32bit. The system came with no disks so I am stuck, for now, with the copy loaded. Anyway, things had been running smoothly up to a few weeks ago, for when I tried to put my system into hibernate, like I've done many times before, the screen went black, but the system did not power-down. I could not do anything but power-cycle it. When it came back I got the "Windows failed to shutdown properly blah blah blah" message. I tried 'sleep' and the same thing happened. I don't do much in the way of adding or removing programs on this laptop, aside from updates and the only recent hardware change was using a usb mouse. Which I have tried removing this and there was no change. I have tried updating drivers that needed it (video, audio, and network) as well as the BIOS. No luck.

Java Applet Freezes System - Requiring Hard Reboot

Jun 22, 2011

I've been using a Java Applet on my notebook, but the other night I was at home without it. So I decided to run it on my desktop instead. When I tried to run the installer for the Applet, my system slowed to a massive crawl. The problem seemed to big to be installer-specific, so I loaded up my E-banking, which uses Java. This didn't just slow my system to a crawl, it down-right froze it, requiring a hard reboot. In short, using Java will freeze or slow down my system massively. I've tried the following myself:

1) Installing latest drivers for my Radeon 4870 video card
2) Uninstall Java, re-install Java
3) Disable Windows Firewall

None of this has worked. I've tried in both Firefox and Chrome, same results, though Firefox seems more prone to the freezing problem.

Are Drivers In Temp Folder, Or Temp Folder ?

Oct 2, 2009

my computer is old and has small hard drive space, and someone recommended I delete my %temp%, my temp, and my prefetch folder, but I was just wondering, since I had to do a whole lot of searching ,and downloading of drivers, (just to make my computer compatible with windows 7), where all my downloaded drivers are? And if deleting any of these folders will screw up my drivers, and give me problems, and I would have to find the drivers again.

(Also I don't really know what the drivers are called, so I can't really search for them) Because I really wanna delete these folders to make my computer faster, because on XP, where my drivers always worked and I never needed to update them, I deleted those folders all the time, and it made it faster because those folders had a crapload of stuff in them, but I don't want my computer to not be compatible with the games/videos/music/etc. I use it for.

Readyboost Vs Pagefile Vs RAM

Aug 2, 2009

I'm running Windows 7 x64 with a Quad Core and 4GB of RAM. I've enabled Readyboost on two USB devices of 2GB each I had laying around: a SanDisk Cruzer Micro, random read speed is 5341 KB/sec, random write speed is 3068 KB/sec. And a Kingston FCR-HS219, random read speed is 3412 KB/sec, random write speed is 3739 KB/sec. Not much, but should suffice to give it a try.

While booting, I saw and improvement. But the thing is I have my computer on 24/7 so I don't care that much about boot time. And I don't see a lot of activity of these devices once is turned on. Specially over the pendrive.

Is it because I have > 2GB RAM? Or is it because they are too small?

Would I benefit if I create a pagefile over one of these devices instead of Readyboost?

How can I "measure" this?

Is there a guide regarding Readyboost and USB devices?
