Red X On Network Drives?

Apr 9, 2011

I have 2 windows 7 computers in my network and I have a Dlink DNS-323 mass storage devide. my wifes computer has no problem accessing the external hard drive. On my computer I have the red X on both drives in the DNS-323. If i try to access this drive from an application such as Itunes, it tells that the path is invalid or something close to that. I then have to go to Windows Explorer and double click on both drives.

Unable To Map Network Drives

Jan 1, 2010

I have two desktop PCs running Windows 7 Ultimate, a HP laptop running Windows XP SP3 and a Network Storage Device (Dlink DNS 343 with 3 Raid Volumes) networked via a D Link DIR-635 wireless Router. Both PCs and the DNS-343 are hard-wired to the router: the Laptop connects wirelessly.

Since installing Windows 7 on the PCs, I am unable to map the network drives on the DNS-343 even though all network components are visible and functioing in Windows Network Map, Pure Networks Map and Norton Internet Securities 2010 Network Map(with Full Trust).

This was not previously a problem with one PC running XP SP3 and the other Vista SP1. The DNS-343 does NOT appear as a network device in Windows 7 Windows Explorer: nor does the Laptop, on either PC. The laptop running XP is able to Map network drives as before and access shared folders on both PCs.

To date I have reset the factory defaults on the router and DNS-343;disabled all firewalls and minimised security controls (eg: MAC filtering) as far as I am able. I can ping each device successfully. The problem is I cannot "see" the DNS-343 in Windows 7 Windows Explorer to map the drives.

Map Network Drives From XP To Windows 7

Jun 21, 2010

I have 3 Windows 7 Ultimate computers hooked up to a ATT FastAccess DSL line. They are in a Homegroup. I also have 2 Windows xp Pro computers that are connected to same the FastAccess DSL. From the XP can see all Windows 7/xp computers by browsing the "entire network".

On one of the Windows 7 computers is assigned to Susan. Susan Windows 7 PC has a 4 Tb external hard drive attached to it. I created a folder on the 4 tb external HD called Frank and shared it.

What I am needing to do is on Frank's Windows XP Pro computer is to Map Network Drive and Map to the "frank" folder and have it reconnect at logon. Problem is when it goes to map the folder it wants an id/password to connect to the "frank folder". I can enter the credentials that Susan uses on her PC and the drive will map just fine but I need it to map without asking for any credentials. I already tried "reconnect at logon" and it shows in explorer but wants a password to reconnect.

I was thinking if I create a Frank user id and password on Susan's PC then use those credentials when frank tries to connect to the folder "frank" from his XP Pro PC then that might work. I am not sure.

They usually appear after 1 or 2 reboots, but having to go through this each time is a bit annoying.Right now all our client computers are running windows 7 pro on a 2008 domain server. We've been having this issue from when we had the 2003 server and its still happening every now and then

LAN Speed Very Slow And Network Drives

Mar 15, 2011

I have speed issues when working with files on the LAN network. They open and save much much slower than XP. On the other hand the ADSL internet connection is fine and running at full speed. What is the problem? The computer is brand new and with fresh install of Windows 7 x64.My other problem is with mapped network drives. On the second computer, which is running fresh install of Windows 7 too, we have mapped network drives which are accessable on the whole network. The problem is that every time we start that PC with the mapped network drives Windows says "Could not reconnect all network drives" and all computers on the network show them with red "x" on the icons. I want them to automatically open at startup.

This does not happen every time either, just about 2-3 days of the 5 day work week. 2 of the drives are mapped via a script, while the 1 drive that is the problem child is set through the Properties-->Profile-->Home Folder of the user on our AD box. We have set the drop down letter to H and verified the path. It is correct, as it works some days.

Main Pc Drives Are Seen On Network By All Computers?

I then later un-shared them by unclicking the tab but all the computers could see the drives that had been previously shared from my main computer. They could even access them even though they had been unshared. I then later reinstalled windows7 on my main computer but the drives are still visible and accessable from computers on my network.

Mapped Network Drives Are Lost

Nov 17, 2009

I have a problem with mapped network drives disconnecting.

I run Windows 7 Pro connecting to Win Server 2003. Reboot and the drives are there. After a while a red cross appears against them in Explorer. I can usually see the contents, but running a program that requires those resources fails.

The only way I can reconnect is to reboot, but then the red cross appears again after a while.

I've updated the LAN driver and even tried setting the registry key MaxNonpagedMemoryUsage to 0xFFFFFFFF as recommended in the only comment on the subject I've been able to find.

I'd really appreciate some help here as I don't want to go back to XP!

Mapping Libraries To Network Drives Possible ?

Dec 17, 2009

I'm using XBMC on an HTPC, that connects to a server hosting all the media files.

Both machines run 7 and I'd love to use Libraries to aggregate movies, TV shows, music, pictures, etc. coming from different folders. Unfortunately, from within XBMC libraries are unreachable.

I thought about mapping them to a network drive, but the actual libraries seem to be a *file* and not a *place* (you can check them by creating a shortcut to a library and looking at its properties).

Anything I've missed?

Cannot Acess Wireless Network Drives

Dec 22, 2009

got a new laptop with windows 7. Joined my home wireless network no problem except that after a few days(all was fine at first) when booting up, the NAS drive plugged into the router shows as disconnected in windows explorer. In fact a bubble pops up in the system tray to say some drives cannot be connected (my wireless network printer has a card reader that appears as a drive). Occasionally I can reconnect the NAS and the card reader by clicking on them in explorer but usually all this does is genertae an error message about them being unavailable OR the name already being in use. BUT the network printer is always available when its card reader isn't and by entering the NAS drive IP adress I can get to its configuration page.

I can usually gain access to the NAS and card reader by disabling and reenabling the laptop wireless connection but it's iritating as I back up to the NAS and this won't work if it shows as disconnected... and the bubble apearing at boot up is also annoying. I've tried disabling the Bullguard firewall with no success.

Any help gratefully received as I thought I'd solved this but it's begun hapening again! Suspect win 7 has patched itself and 'done something'...

Sync Center And Network Drives

Jun 9, 2010

I have been having a strange problem where Sync Center seems to be storing network drives as offline folders.

Even though I am connected to the network all the time and the network drives never go offline they still become unavailable. The network drive appear in the sync partnerships but I have not set these up and have been unable to remove them even when turning offline files off and back on again.

The only Sync which should be there is the folder for eel1651 the rest are network drives which it should not be trying to Sync. It is causing files to become unavailable even when I am currently working on them, so I can't save them. [URL]

As you can see here some of the files have become unavailable compared with above. [URL]

I have disabled all the firewalls and AV on computer and the problems is still happening.

latest windows updates
latest word processing and client updates

All the solutions I have found state its either due to wireless network authentication occuring late in the boot process (but im hard wired) or that you need to upgrade to a Pro edition of windows (which I cam using).

It is not disasterous if I am being honest its just mildly irritating

Mapped Network Drives Without Drive Letters?

May 25, 2011

I have the problem of a long list of redundant mapped network drives without drive letters, for example, documents, documents~1, documents~2, etc. all with same location...right clicking on the mapped does not present any "disconnect" option.Oh, they do not appear as mapped network drives under "My Computer," but under "Network" and the name of the computer (which is on a wireless network with another computer)...I can go to advanced sharing and stop sharing, but then all folders are unshared including the original...I guess this may be the only way of getting this corrected, but it seems like a long way to do something that should be very simple..

Network Drives Cause Explorer To Hang And Crash

Nov 3, 2009

Some observations:

- I have two QNAP NAS servers, which put the drives after 30 mins idle in sleep mode.

- Windows 7 network discovery sees the two NAS servers all the time.

- When you make drive mappings to shares on the NAS servers, (it seems) at random times Explorer hangs (goes into stall) when trying to browse/access files or directories. Only a reboot helps.

- I'm accessing the drives via regular SMB, no HomeGroup, no AD etc.

- When you map the drives initiallially it asks for a password. Storing that account info into the credentials manager doesn't help.

- I tried to open ports 137-139 and 445 in the firewall, but that doesn't help.

My theory is that Windows breaks by default the connection with the NAS after 15 mins of idling. That's standard behaviour. What puzzles me is that Visita didn't have this issue and Windows 7 has.

Do more people have issues with SMB shares ?

Windows 7 - Connecting To Shared Drives On Network

I have 2 windows 7 computer on a wireless network in my house. I went to set the drives to shared in the properties for the drives on both computers, however, whenever I try to connect to the other computer through the network section I got this pop up asking for a password, I tried login passwords and no go. So I went into the sharing options and turned off password protection and it seemed to let me through, and i can see the drive i named and setup, only now when I try clicking on the drive I shared it says (windows cannot access//Name of Folder). How do I get this to work?

Timeout Mapping Network Drives At Windows 7 Login?

Jan 15, 2013

This is my situation: I have a virtual machine running, and a network drive which is mapped to that machine. The problem here is that when I am trying to login on windows, windows is first trying to connect to that mapped network drive - which it cannot because my virtual machine has to start up first. This results in a rather long login-time.So my question is, is there some (registry) setting which allows me set this connection timeout to 0? Or that it won't automatically reconnect the drive at login? Of course the setting 'Do not automatically reconnect at login' is too obvious and does not work, because it also removes the whole mapped network drive at system restart - in my situation the drive should be there, just not connected

Mapped Network Drives, Slower Boot Time

Jun 25, 2012

Long story short, I have shares on three PCs that are not always on. If I make a shortcut to the share and put it on my desktop, sometimes for some reason, the shortcut vanishes. I believe this is because I haven't connected the PC to the network in a while.

So, I went about and mapped those shares to drive letters. All is well, however, it adds another 45 seconds to my boot time.

Pretty sure this is because windows is trying to reconnect to them on boot, but they are disconnected. Is there any way to keep my drive mappings, but not have windows attempt to reconnect on boot?

I know that you will lose your mappings if you do not check "reconnect on login".. so, is there a way to keep the mappings without attempting to reconnect at login?
