Profile Added, But Can't 'see' Network
Dec 13, 2011
I managed to add a wireless network profile to my IBM lenovo T400 laptop which runs on Win 7 OS. However I am not able to see it listed in the list that apperas when I click on the wireless transmission icon on the bottom right of the screen.
I can confirm that the 'wireless radio' button in the said laptop is turned on and is able to see other wireless networks in the vicinity. I can also confirm that the particular wireless network is actually functioning as I am able to access it from my Win XP machine.
In the WinXP machine, my security type is 'WPA2-PSK', I am not able to find the same option in the Win 7 machine, so I selected WPA2-Personal. I also tried playing the with the other 'Security Type' options in the Win 7 machine, but nothing solves the problem.

I just added a password to my home network. But now that I have a password I cant connect without the ehternet cable. All other devices ie T.V, desktop upstairs, ps3 and xbox and smart phones can connect wirelessly. The only device that wont let me connect wirelessly is the laptop that I used to set up the passkey. Furthermore when connecting to the network on the other devices it doesnt ask for the password.

I've recently restored my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OS on to a new SSD using Macrium Reflect. My hosts file has always contained entries for local websites and has always worked until now. After much hair pulling and reading of forums, the only way that I could get the DNS Client to read and process the hosts file was by adding the "NETWORK SERVICE" user permission to it. It already had "SYSTEM", "Administrators" and "Users" (my user account). This was never required before, so I'm confused as to what has happened to require it now?

I have a Lenovo T61 that I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate from Vista Ultimate. Wireless networking works fine except for one profile that was used in Vista. When I try to connect to that particular site, the network attempts connect but always fail. The network trys to connect to a profile that was previously used in this situation, however the properties indicate Windows Vista. I believe if I could delete the profile, a new one would be created and connection could be made.
The problem is: I cannot delete the profile. I cannot locate it on the system. The only time it appears is when trying to connect to this particular site. A text file is generated when I use the troubleshooter. Read more at the forum...

I've been experiencing a strange (and very frustrating) issue in the last few months in relation to my wireless network profile. At home we recently changed our wireless router. It seems to be working fine on every machine in the house (running everything from XP to OSX to Win 7) except my machine which does the following:On reboot, no matter what, it seem to not want to save the wireless network profile and will continually look for the old wireless network (which I try to delete but seems to re-appear every time) and force me to re-enter the password for the new network. It reverts to the state it was in before the new wireless was picked up, trying to connect to the old network which should be removed.
Today, I tried to run a "clean" start-up. I went into msconfig and under the "services" tab and disabled all services not from Microsoft - This stopped it from reverting and looking for the old network. I got the idea from a thread on the microsoft forums which said to try and locate the service related to the wireless card (I was not able to find mine from the list). As i start to bring the services back in, it puts it back in the state with the old network and does not want to save the new one. One of the services seems to be holding something to stop it from saving in the way it should beIf this helps, this screenshot has all the services (the only one cut off is "Steam Client Service" - Valve corporation which i tested in isolation and did not seem to cause the issue)I've searched this to death and can't find any solution, one of these services seems to be holding it.

I recently purchased a desktop computer with Windows 7 already installed. I set up my wireless connection to my home's wireless network, but when I first connect to the internet, it connects to a virtual profile instead of my wireless network. I've tried setting my wireless network as the default network, but after I shut down and restart, it just goes directly to the Virtual Profile. I've even tried deleting the VP, but the computer finds it and goes straight to it as soon as the computer starts up again. Is there any way to permanently disable the virtual profile?

Under "Advanced sharing settings", one can really turn off a lot of network sharing features to secure a computer. The "Public folder sharing" switch allows one to turn off Public folder sharing, but people logged on to "this" computer can still access these folders. Does anyone know if this means *remote* login? If so, is there a way to deactivate this so that it is only accessible at the "console"? And by Public folder, does that mean a folder that is user-specific (and controlled by owning user), but open to the public? Or does it mean a file space "commons", accessible and controlled by all users? The "Password protected sharing" switch allows one to restrict access to the computer to only those who have an account and password on the computer. Again, is there a way to ensure that access is only possible from the console?

Originally I had all my data files in drive D and only programs in drive C. Somehow my old user profile got corrupted and the Backgound wall paper is not working properly. So I created a new admin profile to fix it but now I have a mess. After I created a new admin profile and moved the old users folder/files to the new user , I decided to delete the old profile after everything seems to be working properly . When deleting the old profile I elected to save old user files to my desktop ( fortunately) . I now have a very fragmented system . Some of the folder/files are still under my old username in D drive, nothing in my new user name in D drive plus almost all of the folder/files from the old user ( in drive D) are now in a folder on the desktop where windows elected to place them when I elected to save the folders/files. I really need all the old user folders.I would like to have the Data in either under my old or new username in Drive D instead of fragmented all over the place. I realize I ended up in this situation because I didnt understand fully what windows will do when creating and deleting user profiles.

I noticed this a few days after having to restore my drive from a True Image backup.Running Win 7 Professional.I currently have 5 "recent" programs listed in my Start Menu (not pinned). I have Properties set to show 15 recent programs. When I run a program from the Start Menu (not the "recent programs," but the full list) or from Explorer (navigate to program and double-click the exe file), the program does not get added to the list. The only recently run programs being added are ones I run from Desktop shortcuts. I know this is not normal behavior; my laptop, also running Win 7 Professional, adds recent programs regardless of how they're launched.

y motherboard Asus P8Z77-V LX can handle up to 32 GB of DDR3 1600mhz.I did do a "memtest" on all of my 16GB DDR3 1600mhz, 10 passes, 10 hours and no errors. I had my original 4 GB still in the computer as I had to remove the other ram to install Windows 7. Once windows was installed I ran it with just the 4 GB for a few days to make sure everything was working which it was. So I then re-installed the remaining 12 GB of ram and then right away windows explorer kept crashing. I removed the 12GB I just put in and reinstalled each stick separately with the original 4 GB so each time there was 8 GB of ram installed with no problems at all.So what gives ???Is there a default setting somewhere that is limiting my memory?

I've just setup an HTPC (Windows 7 Professional 32bit) and am using WMC on Windows 7. I've run into a problem that lots and lots of people have had (can see lots of posts on the web) but not fixes seem to work and I've trolled for two days now finding no fixes for the problem.Perhaps someone can assist?Problem: When I add a shared folder from my SAN (which I can access from Windows Explorer), WMC says scanning for files but never finds any. I have a collection of AVI files on the SAN and am wanting to list them in the Movie library on WMC (not the Video Library).I've heard it's a file association problem but that does not seem to fix the problem. I've changed the association of AVIs from WMP to WMC.Any idea what the real fix is?Question: What's the best practice to put a collection of AVIs on the WMC. If you have 10 movies, what's best?1. Create a folder called Movies and under that folder, 10 additional folders for Movie1, Movie2, etc and under those folders the actual AVI files, or,

She decided to add some 6000 fonts to the system by dropping them in the font folder. I come to realize this when i notice the entire system intermittently freezing & running slow as molasses. Suspecting the obvious (and in an attempt to spare myself hours of sifting through fonts!) I figured i could simply delete all of the fonts and the system would retain the required ones (like they would on a mac)...

I'm having some problems running a USB hardlock key over a Windows XP Mode virtual machine.
If I select the hardlock from the list of devices, it works ok and the app that uses the hardlock works great.
But if I try to run the application from the Start menu of the host system (Windows 7) as Windows XP Mode, the application does not detect the USB Hardlock key (though windows 7 does).
As far as I have worked through it, it would work if I could just manage somehow that when running a virtual machine, the USB hardlock key was loaded automatically. I don't need that USB hardlock key for any Windows 7 application.
Any idea?

I'm being forced into an upgrade because my last machine was getting old and slow and was infested with viruses.
One of my guys is recommending setting up a non-admin user account for the every day use of the laptop so that any undetected Trojans don't have admin rights if they embed themselves. Do you guys think this is even worth it? Or is simply keeping UAC turned ON, will be enough with an admin account?

I'm not certain if this has anything to do with Windows, or my motherboard, or overloading my system, or whatever. But I could use some input.
I built my current system in the summer of 2009. I tried to "futureproof" as much as I could by putting in a Corei7 processor (the low-end, 2.66 Ghz one), an Intel 80 GB SSD boot drive, a 10,000 RPM WD Velociraptor secondary drive, 12 GB of DDR3 1666Mhz RAM which I later learned my Gigabyte GA EX58-UD5 Motherboard DID NOT want to run natively any faster than 1333 Mhz, a 2GB DDR5 ATI 4870 Sapphire video card, and a BD-write drive I already had I'd installed in a prior system, as well as a DVD-writer and a card reader/writer with additional built-in USB ports and an E-SATA port.
This particular motherboard came with 10 SATA 2 ports and 10 USB ports (not to mention more I got with the Coolermaster Haf 937 case I used and that card reader, plus a couple firewire ports (I LIKE lots of connectivity). I never used all my SATA2 ports, although quite a few were hooked up, what with the connections for the case and card reader (which has since bit the dust)...
Anyway, a year or two later, after SATA 3 and USB came out, Newegg had 600GB WD Velociraptor SATA3 drives on sale for LESS than I'd paid for my 300 GB SATA 2 drive, and since I largely used external drives for a lot of my storage, and those were becoming available in USB 3, I found an ASUS card (U3S6 -- PCI-E 4) that had two internal SATA 3 connectors and two external USB3 connectors, and away I went. (I also added an additional internal SATA 2 7200 Hitachi 2 TB drive as a primary file storage drive at that time, with the first SATA 3 external a 2 TB SATA 3 to use as backup.) Those drives all show up FINE when I boot up, but often after a few hours, or a day or two, they'll just "disappear" from my list of drives. I find this QUITE disconcerting, as the 80GB Intel SSD has proven too small, what with the 14 GB WinSXS is now taking up, and I just ordered a 256 GB SSD that comes with Acronis True Image from Newegg to clone it to -- and of course it's SATA3. As I didn't have any more SATA 3 slots left, I also ordered another SATA 3 card. The ONLY slot I had left was a PCI-E -1 slot, which it appears that card is designed for, but as this new drive will be my BOOT drive, with Windows and all my PROGRAMS running off it, I certainly don't need the system "losing IT" in the middle of a session! (Note, the SATA 2 Hitachi drive NEVER fails to show up. Neither do the 300 GB Velociraptor nor the 80 GB Intel SSD, which are all on the built-in SATA 2 BUS).
I've considered replacing this motherboard, as it's had some issues (BOTH of the two gigabit ethernet connections that came with it petered out, and I had to buy an add-on card to get my gigabit ethernet back (one WASTED PCI slot)! However, I've yet to find ANY other motherboards that have anywhere NEAR the connectivity this Gigabyte board came with. Or is that the problem? Did Gigabyte overload this board?
The other day I thought to update the BIOS on the board, and although it took two reboots, I haven't "lost" any of those drives since (been on, or in "Sleep" mode ever since), so maybe it needed a BIOS update. I also went into the BIOS "Intelligent Tweaker" and toned down any settings that warned might create an unstable system (I was already pretty conservative with those, but I went a bit more conservative).

Now when I add the 2nd hard drive back to my computer I get a message saying something like "can not load os" right after the bios screen comes up and before Windows begins to load. If I unplug the second drive the computer will boot just fine.
If I access the boot menu and select my boot drive the computer will boot and my second drive will work just fine. I do not have to enter the boot menu and select the boot drive on every startup?

I currently have the following network configuration:- Broadband Cable Modem (in my den) - Router (in my den) - Computer (in my den) - Wireless Access Point (family room)My broadband cable modem is connected to my router via ethernet cable. I also have an Ethernet cable running from the back of my router directly into my PC. My current setup is in my den (I will explain). In my family room (which is away from the den) I have my television and several other wireless devices (Roku box, etc). My signal strength is low in my family room due to many walls between my den and family room. I therefore installed a Wireless Access Point in my family room by running an Ethernet cable into my basement and connecting the router in the den to the Wireless Access Point in my family room. Now here is my question: I set the SSID (or network name) of the Access Point so that it is the same as my current network name (that way I see the AP on the network). Now here is where I need to understand how a wireless Access Point works. If I have a laptop or other wireless device in my family room and search for a wireless signal, am I connecting to my router (that has a weaker wireless signal than the AP) or to my Access Point (stronger because my Access Point is a foot away from my wireless devices) since they both have the same network name? And if I connect at that strong signal and walk into another room where the signal is weaker, does my laptop automatically connect to the wireless router? How do I tell if both my router an wireless Access Point are using the same SSID or network name. I guess what I'm trying to ask is where am I getting my wireless signal from, the Access Point or the Router or both (assume I am in wireless mode).

I am always manipulation files between several folders so I have several iterations of Windows Explorer open when my computer boots up and showing the contents of the folders that I manipulate all the time. Using XP files moved or copied into another folder always appeared at the bottom of the explorer window and that was good because although they were out of alphabetical order I always knew where to find the new files in the explorer window. They would stay at the bottom until I clicked 'Refresh' or changed the focus to another folder or shut down that explorer. Windows 7 explorer behaves differently and places new files in alphabetical order. Is there a way it can be changed so that new files show at the bottom of the explorer window?
