DNS Client Ignores Hosts File Unless Network Service Permission Added
Oct 3, 2011
I've recently restored my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OS on to a new SSD using Macrium Reflect. My hosts file has always contained entries for local websites and has always worked until now. After much hair pulling and reading of forums, the only way that I could get the DNS Client to read and process the hosts file was by adding the "NETWORK SERVICE" user permission to it. It already had "SYSTEM", "Administrators" and "Users" (my user account). This was never required before, so I'm confused as to what has happened to require it now?

Yesterday I realized my hosts file went missing. This happened within the last week. UAC is on and my computer is clean so I assume this wasn't caused by malware, but I'd like to know what program did this. Is there any sort of log I can access that will show me that information?

I didn't find a hosts file in the SysWOW64 folder, but I did find one in the "usual" place windowssystem32driversetc and I see it's NOT set to read-only. But when I try to edit it with notepad and save as "all files" rather than .txt (to avoid notepad giving it a .txt extension) it fails to save. It tells me I don't have permission (even though my user account is an administrator).
Is there some reg trick to allow me to change it? I've got a bunch of mappings I want to put in there.

I've got a browser search redirect imbedded somewhere in my hosts configuration but can't find the file to edit it out and hijackthis cannot fix it. The c:/windows/system32/etc/hosts is merely a sample and it's not buried in the registry. Where is the file that contains this rubbish?

Changes I've made on windowssystem32driversetchosts file are ignored by web browsers like IE, Firefox on Windows 7 x64.
On the other hand, ping command seems aware of hosts file. It gives the output of 127.0.0.1 for web addresses which are opened by web browsers normally.

I followed the instructions on this page: url...I renamed my hosts file "hosts.orig", downloaded, unzipped, and saved another hosts file from url... named HOSTS in the same place as the original. After that, I couldn't connect to the internet at home or at the library. I tried deleting the "new" hosts file that I downloaded, in order to put things back to how they used to be, but any time I try to do something to the "HOSTS" file I get a pop up saying: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Cryptographic Services.... close the file and try again" which doesn't work. I tried stopping the DNS thing, but that only worked for about 5 minutes. I restarted the computer because it was slowing down, and the DNS thing restarted itself, and the internet disconnected again. I try stopping it, but an error message saying "Windows could not stop the DNS client service on local computer. error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

Windows 7 64 bitI went to the Microsoft website and reset the hosts file. (I just copied the text on the page that said it was for the Windows 7 hosts) Prior to the hosts reset, the only text in there was 120.0.0.1 localhost. Anyone know what this means? This happened one other time before, so it has to be something.

Yesterday I updated Windows 7 x86 to SP1 and today found out that all my local virtual hosts has stopped working. First, I checked apache service - it was ok, but I restarted it. Then I tried to ping one of local domain names:
Code: C:Usersevgeny g likov>ping aaa1
Ping request could not find host aaa1. Please check the name and try again. I was thinking, SP1 setup just wiped all additions out of hosts file, but no:
Code: 127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 aaa1
127.0.0.1 aaa2
[Code].....

I have tried to move the hosts file location by changing the registrykeyHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParametersDataBasePathto the desired folder location. However, it appears that this key is somehow ignored by my system (Windows 7 64 bit) and the default location%SystemRoot%system32driversetc is still the one where the hosts file is read.I notice it because any changes made to the hosts file in the default location are detected (I check it with the ping command) and any changes to the new location are simply ignoredI have copied and pasted the hosts file with different values between the default and new folder, so I guess it is not a problem with the hosts file having the wrong format. I also copied and paste the new folder path to the registry key so it is also not a problem of having misspelled the folder path, either. I also restarted the computer after changing the registry key.

I removed Security Shield 2012 from my laptop which has Windows 7. All went well until I got to Step 23 in Bleeping Computer website (.../virus-removal/remove-security-shield). I deleted the HOSTS file and downloaded Windows 7 HOSTS file. However, I can't save it in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS file. I unchecked the hide system protected files but still can't find it beyond "drivers."

I successfully went through the removal process as recommended by bleepingcomputer - but have been unable to complete the last step - deleting the HOSTS file. I just went to the cmd prompt and typed in del c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS and was denied. What should I try next?

I managed to add a wireless network profile to my IBM lenovo T400 laptop which runs on Win 7 OS. However I am not able to see it listed in the list that apperas when I click on the wireless transmission icon on the bottom right of the screen.
I can confirm that the 'wireless radio' button in the said laptop is turned on and is able to see other wireless networks in the vicinity. I can also confirm that the particular wireless network is actually functioning as I am able to access it from my Win XP machine.
In the WinXP machine, my security type is 'WPA2-PSK', I am not able to find the same option in the Win 7 machine, so I selected WPA2-Personal. I also tried playing the with the other 'Security Type' options in the Win 7 machine, but nothing solves the problem.

Last week I hit an issue whereby I was unable to access the Internet wirelessly even though my laptop could see the router and had a good signal. I tried connecting up via an ethernet cable to no avail.
The issue seems to have started right after a Windows Update but I can't be 100% certain. If I do ipconfig /all I can see that DHCP is not enabled. I know the router is fine because my vista laptop can access wirelessly via the router fine. I tried doing some things I seen in the forum such as ipconfig /renew etc. but it said it couldn't contact the RPC server. I followed this up and was recommended to check the DHCP client service was started. It isn't even there. I was wondering if the update could have removed it.
Someone else who had reported the same issue on this forum was asked to do a system restore. I did this and the service is still not there. I am assuming that the non-existence of the DHCP client is the cause of my issues accessing the Internet.

So, I was having problems with my .dat file type icon, and in frustration trying to get rid of the icon and start all over again, I deleted the file type in the registry. Will this cause problems in the future, even though I re-added it in the registry? I don't see any problems with them right now, but I didn't know if I might have troubles in the future due to this.

On July 12th 2012, my computer installed updates. After rebooting and waiting for me on the login screen, I gave it a hard shutdown to check on the BIOS settings (for a little side project, in the end I did not save any changes). After booting and logging in again, I find that many services are not running. I ran a very thorough check for malware and viruses (took over 24 hours to complete), and still no solutions. I have uninstalled/reinstalled my Broadcom 802.11g Wireless Driver several times.
I now look in the Event Viewer and find that the DHCP Client service is not running! It is set to automatic start in Services.msc, but when I try to manually start it, it gives me error 1075 (some dependencies do not exist or are marked for deletion). Running ipconfig, I notice that my system is using an APIPA-formatted address (169.254.x.x), indicating that the computer couldn't find a DHCP server.
My Event Viewer is peppered with:
Event 7003, Service Control Manager
The DHCP Client service depends the following service: Afd. This service might not be installed.
Event 7001, Service Control Manager
The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service depends on the DHCP CLient service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependcy service does not exist or has been marekd for deletion.
And that keeps repeating many times in a minute (about 30-40 cycles of it).

The contents of several file and folders has gone missing. This includes the "My Pictures" library (my biggest concern) and a few others. Like a couple random Games, Steam, just odd seemingly random folders. This may have been caused by some recent changes, which I will get into- but I am pretty close to just saying several thousand pictures are just...gone.Secondary Problem: I recently had a pretty scary ordeal with the user profiles on my machine. When attempting to login, it would state that the User settings had been altered and would not let me log in. That has been taken care of now, but I feel the two problems are connected, and this is why:Several days ago I was attempting to install a Logitech Web Camera onto my Windows 7 X86 OS. Logitech does not provide drivers for this OS or support the installation, but I have in fact been able to install it in the past with some clever workarounds. While attempting to re-create the troublesome install I had used in the past I caused the Profile problem. The Logitech cam Drivers (Model V-uu22 Drivers for Vista if that is important) touch many parts of the machine they are installed on. There is a sub-folder that is installed in the "My Pictures" folder for storing your webcam snapshots, then a folder in the "Movies" library for a similar function. There is also a sub folder that is placed in the user profile area that stores your user information (I assume) So, while installing these drivers and trying to get them to work again my machine froze up mid-install and demanded a reboot. Upon reboot the user profile would not let me login, then when I rebooted once more to attempt to fix it, the boot file was destroyed. So, in goes the recovery disc, boot from CD and fixed the boot.ini file. Finally gain access to the windows logon and still the problem remains. It took hours to figure this whole thing out. booted into safe mode, deleted the improper SID (SP?) for the users that had somehow been created and ended up just having to use a restore point to undo all the changes. Long story short, I got it working and now the file contents are all wonky.
Now, seeing as I used a restore point to fix the issues, I don't see how the logitech install could have been the culprit, but all of my pictures are gone. I have searched the machine, used a file recovery service, looked all over and now I am coming here.Steps taken to find pictures: File recovery, Showing hidden files, searching all files, Ensuring that the user profiles had not been damaged, lots of google searches, you name it.I did notice, however, that there were hidden files and folders on both my drives that are labeled "pictures", "movies" etc. But I cannot access them. I am on an administrator account, I attempted to change the file permissions using the properties interface of the folders and do not have access, even tried the takedown command on them, but I am not using FAT. I simply have no idea what to do now.
Another thing of note: I use my XBOX 360 to wireless stream content from my machine to the Televisions in my home. I notice that the pictures all made it to the Console, and are viewable- but it seems as if the XBOX has created another User profile that I have no access to and moved the items in question there. All in all this has been very perplexing, and I know the pictures are there, somewhere, and have not been deleted- I just have trouble wrapping my head around what user profile they may be in and how to gain access to that folder.
Specs: MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1, AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 45nm Technology, Mobo: ASRock M3A770DE, AMD Radeon HD 6800.
I also have Hijackthis reports and have run full anti-virus and anti spyware on the machine several times.
