Computer Will Not Boot Automatically When Second Drive Is Added
Jul 14, 2012
I recently replaced my boot drive and just got everythign up and running. I had removed my backup drive while I replaced the boot drive so that I could us it on another computer.
Now when I add the 2nd hard drive back to my computer I get a message saying something like "can not load os" right after the bios screen comes up and before Windows begins to load. If I unplug the second drive the computer will boot just fine.
If I access the boot menu and select my boot drive the computer will boot and my second drive will work just fine. I do not have to enter the boot menu and select the boot drive on every startup?

I'm having some problems running a USB hardlock key over a Windows XP Mode virtual machine.
If I select the hardlock from the list of devices, it works ok and the app that uses the hardlock works great.
But if I try to run the application from the Start menu of the host system (Windows 7) as Windows XP Mode, the application does not detect the USB Hardlock key (though windows 7 does).
As far as I have worked through it, it would work if I could just manage somehow that when running a virtual machine, the USB hardlock key was loaded automatically. I don't need that USB hardlock key for any Windows 7 application.
Any idea?

I've been using Windows 7 x64 Enterprise since somewhere in september (legally, yes), and it has ran perfectly until now (well, it still does, but...). I left the computer on for 6-7 hours while I visited my grandparents, and when I came back, I used it as always and then had to reboot it. When led to this:
When I boot up the computer it will automatically boot from the CD drive. Every single time I boot I have to press F12 and choose my harddrive. It does not save. I've been into BIOS as well, and it says that it is my harddrive that is the primary boot device. It does this every single time I turn it on.
I have no discs inside the DVD drive neither.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Dell Inspiron 1545. I have had this laptop approximately 3.5 years and have never had a problem until we returned from vacation a few weeks ago. I shut down my perfectly working computer and came back to beeping and auto-scroll. I have run virus scanners, registry cleaners, driver scanners, and pc cleaners and have yet to fix this problem. There is no pattern to the beeping, It will beep anywhere from 2-5 times at the Dell logo screen and then continually for approximately 100+ beeps at the Windows start screen before booting normally. My screen auto scrolls in all browsers as well as my email. I use Chrome and Thunderbird

I have a toshiba laptop that runs windows 7 32bit home premium and it is not booting properly. When I turn it on t will show the microsoft logo and says "starting windows" but never gets past that point. I have tried all the fixes to no avail including, safe mode (will not boot into safe mode..starts to load but stops at drivers/atipcie.sys and sits there for a minute or two and goes to the repair startup recommended screen. I have tried startup repair and done it many times because I have read it can take several times (it says "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically") I have tried the windows repair disc using system restore but it says no restore points found, even though i know they are on my computer. All of my school files are on this computer and while I have some of there backed up on a external hard drive there are some more recent files that are not. What can I try without a clean install to try and repair this?

I recently attempted to add a hard drive to my Lenovo W520 laptop using a CD/DVD caddy accessory designed to hold a SATA hard drive.Windows recognized the new device and according to its messages, automatically installed the required device drivers. However, when I go into Windows Explorer, the new drive is nowhere to be found. Now, I know (or at least assume) this new drive probably needs to be formatted, but shouldn't it show up within Windows Explorer even in a pre-formatted state?

I am getting the 'This copy of win is not genuine' black screen again. I built my computer and bought win 7 home premium online from Microsoft. I received two disks in the mail and installed 64 bit version. I activated and was fine for a few months and got the black screen. This time, I added a usb drive to my comp. and got the black screen. I removed the usb device but the deed was done. I can't find the activation code so I can't activate on line. I have been through all the activation tutorials.

I am trying to run memtest on a new build and for some reason, the machine will not boot from the disc drive. I'm positive that it CAN boot from the disc drive because I just installed windows 7x64 on it last night. I have already configured the BIOS to boot from CDROM as it's first choice and selected to boot from CDROM thru the boot menu. I am 100% positive that this memtest disc is good because I just successfully ran it on my main machine with no problems.
ps. to power the disc drive I am using a 4-pin molex to SATA adapter since my PSU only has 2 SATA pwr connectors and they are being used to power my 2 HDD's. I don't know if this has to do with it...could it be a bad adapter not powering the drive at initial startup? Bear in mind that the drive works fine once I'm in the OS.

I replaced the HDD with the SSD and I get a WIndows 7 message Status:0xc000000e and Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.I went to BIOS setup and the Kingston drive was listed as No2 after DVD/CD drive as boot drive. I moved it to No 1 position and tried again. Same result. I googled the issue and others seem to have problems with SSD drive replacements.ANyone got an answer

I am wondering if there is a way for me to set up my computer in the following manner:
C: <- Main Boot Drive (60GB SSD)
D: <- Copy of Boot Drive (60GB SSD)
E: <- Program Drive (1TB HDD)
F: <- Storage Drive (2TB HDD)
G: <- Download Drive (500GB)
I have done the separate program and storage drive before, but I was wondering if perhaps a way to back up my boot drive without necessarily raid. It was brought to my attention that if something were to go wrong with the data then raid would automatically copy it (which makes sense), or am I worrying to much?

i have been on various forums for advice but unable to solve - this is the problem -
* it turns on & I CAN get into advanced menus
* it will not repair itself no matter what
* it will not go into any other modes , safe Etc....therefore I cannot restore to factory settings etc....
* ive Tried all tricks such as F8, Alt & F11 etc..... to get into advanced menu settings - all lead to the black screen
* everything i click on enter leads to a black screen - only a white curser appears.
its as if there is no way of accessing the computer disc/ hard drive in anyway from boot up. there is clearly a hardware problem but i cannot access anything internal beyond ordinary & advanced menus i just keep being led to the black screen & no activity. the menus work & that is all. i run Windows 7 on a Dell inspiron 1564.

Using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. W/ASUS P7P55D Deluxe board. Very stable and non buggy. Computer was running great with multiple drives. I substituted one of my 1TB drives with a brand new Seagate 3 TB drive. With the new drive hooked up, the computer will not boot and gives a message that there is no hard drive detected, put media in and hit the key. (something to that effect).
If I enter the bios in the condition, it shows all the drives in their correct order and the boot sequence is the first hard drive, CD, etc. It has detected the new drive as drive #3. But it will not boot. But, if I disconnect the new drive (power and SATA connector), the compute will boot up fine. I have checked all the connectors ad they seem fine. Is there something about the sequence in which the SATA connectors have to be connected?

I currently do not have any internal optical drive, but I do have a USB optical drive instead. Would it be possible to boot up Windows 7 from the external drive in the UEFI Bios? This is for a new computer without a formatted hard drive, if it helps.

I took out my Windows 7 boot drive and put it inside of a USB enclosure and when I try and go to my profile, I can't open Users folder on other computer. I don't have an administrator account on this other computer. Is there any way to open up the folder? It just says access denied when I try and open it up on a windows xp computer with no ADMIN privileges (I can't get admin on this computer).
On a XP computer that has admin it opens fine. I figured since I actually wasn't using the OS that was on the drive I wouldn't have any trouble reading any folders on it (but I guess that because it's NTFS there are more security measures, unlike FAT32 which would let anybody read anything). Would I just need to open up the folder on a computer with admin and then copy the things over while I still have admin.

my desktop computer won't boot. When I turn it on it displays the welcome splash screen and then goes black. A message will then display that says CMD failed to start and then it will shut down. It does the same thing in safe mode as well.My question is. I have already set up the HD from the desktop as an external to my laptop so I could get files off it. Is there any way to do system restore on the hard drive when it is set as an external? Because I did this last night and I think if I restore the drive it will fix it.

I just got an SSD, and immediately installed W7 on it. Got it all updated, backed up my other drive, and formatted the old one so it wouldn't be a boot disk. However, now Windows won't automatically boot from the SSD. I can hit the boot menu at startup and select the drive manually, but it does not show up in the arrangeable list of drives to automatically boot from. How do I make Windows automatically boot from the SSD? Windows 7 is fully installed and updated on it; it works fine when I automatically select it, but Windows refuses to notice it unless I tell it that it is there.

I've got 2 separate hard drives, both with Windows 7 (let's call them "Drive A" and "Drive B" ). Drive A is my primary drive that I always want to boot up automatically upon restart, cold boot, etc. Now, if I want to use Drive B, I know how to go into the BIOS and re-assign the Boot Priority so that Drive B will start up. However, if I restart the computer (while working in Drive B), I want the computer to go back to booting up Drive A. In other words, I want the system to only boot up Drive B for only those times I manually specify it. I always want Drive A to remain as my primary boot up drive. Is there any way to set this in the BIOS? (The BIOS always seems to go by the last setting.)
