My external hard drive"Volume J" opens every time I boot up in a window titled "Auto PLay". I prefer that it not do that and I'll open it when I want. As far as I can tell, it's not in the start up tab of MSCONFIG. How do I stop that window from opening automaticallY?
At random times in the last couple of days my browser (Firefox) would open randomly the default web sites. If the browser is closed or I'm doing something in another application, it would open a new browser window with the default web pages without me triggering the application to open.I've done a full virus search using Kaspersky , Spybot and AdAware but none of the three could find any malware or spyware.

When I drag a shortcut of the current web page from the top address bar of IE9 onto the desktop a new IE9 window opens with the web page in it. This is rather annoying. All I am intersted in is to have a shortcut icon to be saved on the desktop.

I have a strange problem that has been occurring since I very first installed Windows 7 x64 fresh. Whenever I click on the primary C drive in Explorer (or any other CD, card reader, or network mapped drive), sometimes 1 new window will open up, sometimes 2 new windows will open up, and sometimes 3 new windows will open up. The new windows usually, but not always, have an address bar. Explorer just seems to randomly open multiple windows at will.
I've been searching and searching online, trying various Tools->Folder Options as well as registry settings, but nothing seems to work. All I've found is a couple other forum posts with the same problem (random amount of multiple windows opening), but no resolutions.
This doesn't happen on any of my other Windows 7 x64 computers. The main difference I can think of is that this is the only machine I have with an SSD, but I can't see how that would effect all drives in Explorer.
till 2 days ago, when I connected a USB stick or any other USB device, it was given a driver letter automatically and a window prompted for which actions I want to do.Now (after a windows update?), the drive doesn't receive a drive letter automatically. I have to go into disc manager a give manually a drive letter in order to be able to use the drive.
I've been using Windows 7 x64 Enterprise since somewhere in september (legally, yes), and it has ran perfectly until now (well, it still does, but...). I left the computer on for 6-7 hours while I visited my grandparents, and when I came back, I used it as always and then had to reboot it. When led to this:
When I boot up the computer it will automatically boot from the CD drive. Every single time I boot I have to press F12 and choose my harddrive. It does not save. I've been into BIOS as well, and it says that it is my harddrive that is the primary boot device. It does this every single time I turn it on.
I recently replaced my boot drive and just got everythign up and running. I had removed my backup drive while I replaced the boot drive so that I could us it on another computer.
Now when I add the 2nd hard drive back to my computer I get a message saying something like "can not load os" right after the bios screen comes up and before Windows begins to load. If I unplug the second drive the computer will boot just fine.
If I access the boot menu and select my boot drive the computer will boot and my second drive will work just fine. I do not have to enter the boot menu and select the boot drive on every startup?
Using Win7, how can I get Win Explorer to automatically expand the C drive tree upon launch? I tried this -- %windir%Explorer.exe /n,/e,c: -- but it did not work.
I have two Identical hard drives [1.5T WD in external caddys with both USB2 & eSata connections]. Both have been in use since I built computer Dec10. Now I plug them in and their not visible anymore? Their shown as a usb or scsi drive but no assigned drive letter or their "name".Their showing in the Disk manager and I found I had to manually tell it to mount and assign a drive letter[then their useable]. I tried another removable drive that was USB2 & firewire and the same thing. USB2 ,eSata or firewire and their all not visable in explorer. Yet I can plug in a flash drive and I can immediately see it once loaded. Is there a switch in registry or somewhere thats controls this. All these drives were immediately available in file explorer previously? Now I am having to use the DM to manually mount and assign them to read/write to them.
my Windows 7 recently quit assigning drive letters automatically. I frequently plug in new hard drives to the system using various USB to IDE or SATA adapters and now when I plug in a new hard drive with any of these USB adapters, it does not get a drive letter assigned to the volumes on the drive. If I go to Disk Management, the drives show up, and so do their partitions, and I can manually assign a drive letter to it, but this gets rather tedious. Any idea why it quit doing it automatically and how to get it to automatically assign drive letters once again?? I figured maybe it ran out of letters, so I went in the registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMMountedDevices and deleted all the remembered drive letter assignments in there, but that didn't help any.
I am running WHS but the same principal applies as 7. I have a HP N40L Server and have no problem sharing anything internal or external after it is connected following standard procedure.
My question is, is it possible to make Windows 7/WHS automatically share plug and play storage devices. The Server is over Wi-Fi and sometimes for big files it can be too slow and is easier just plugging in a HD.
Ideally 1. File is too big to rip directly to Desktop or Laptop from Server.
2. Plug in storage device to Server via any of the four USBs on the Servers front.
3. Go back to my regular Desktop or Laptop
4. Go to My Computer and notice the new drive has appeared under the Sever with my other internal shared drives
5. Drag and Drop to and from Server and Computer as I wish.
I use a lot of different usb hard drives in my shop. I have two basic enclosures, a generic one that uses pata drives on a usb 2.0 cable and an Apricon USB SATA 2.0 adapter.Suddenly when I plug in a new drive device manager does see the drive and installs it in device manager. I can see the drive in Disk Management but it has no drive letter assigned, and therefore doesn't show up in Computer. I can easily just assign a letter in Disk Management and the drive immediately becomes usable. However, I would like to get Windows 7 to resume automatically assigning a drive letter.
I have tried a program called USB DriveCleanup. What it appears to have done is remove all installations of prior USB drives and when I plug in a drive that has been in the machine previously it then goes thru the install again. Yet still no drive letter. I think the program is doing what would manually be done by going into safe mode and cleaning out all the entries that build up there that don't appear in normal mode, then removes them. Basically it seems like a shortcut to manually doing it.
I also tried a registry fix that essentially asked me to delete the upper and lower filters. This seems similiar to fix for CD/DVD drives that no longer appear in Computer. This fix also didn't work.I tried removing and reinstalling the chipset drivers. Still no go.Running Windows 7 Pro SP1, H55 chipset.
Off without any message and when switch on again, does not open.shall remove the battery and leave 1 hour off.after press power button, it starts to open the black page and off again. sometimes when passing this stage, but will freeze regularly switches the screen and have to detract from the currents that off.restart fails to do ever. made and formatting clean but still the same problem.
I have a 32" screen and i am sitting more to the right side of the screen. I am getting sick of turning all the time the screen to see on the left side so i want to set all windows to open on the right side of the screen and not to the left(standard). I am running windows 7.
I installed Lotus smartsuite 9.8.2 and prepared a worksheet. When I go to the c drive and try to open the worksheet it only opens in wordpad( which produces garbage). I right clicked the worksheet and hit open. It recommended I open in wordpad and when I hit browse Lotus doesnt appear. How can I open the worksheet in Lotus?
Yea basicly all the programs on my computer now opens with notepad. This happened because i opened a program with notepad and now my computer thinks that every program is supposed to be opened with notepad >.
I work in a school environment and have come across an intermittent, non-user specific and non-machine specific issue. Sometimes when people log on and start typing it will open up a piece of software, and always the same one and the same 'A' key on the keyboard. It is not a huge problem, you can minimise the program and it wont keep opening up, or you can log off and back on again to cure the problem. I am just curious if anyone has seen this before, or maybe has an idea how we can prevent this. I have search many forums for similar problems people have experienced.
I somehow choice my power2go program as the default program for all my programs. All my icons turned to power2go icon, I have done this before and in the past I would delete the program causing this (power2go) and the problem would be solved. I did this and nothing happened, the program was deleted but all my icons are now blank. When I go to open any other program I get the default box asking me to choose which program to use to open it. I mean for everything word, internet explorer, I mean everything. For example when I tried to open windows media player I get a box that says " The selected file has an extension (ink.) that is not recongnized by windows media player, but the player may still be able to play it. Because the extension is unknown by the player, you should be sure that the file comes from a trustworthy sourse. When I select yes I get windows media player cannot play the file the player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. When I try word I get the default box and when I select word it opens still how do I get the defaults restored. Some programs don't do anything they just time out. I did a system restore and nothing how do I restore my defaults for all my programs. Is there a way to make sure this never ever happens again. The box that say always use this program to open this type of file is not checked which it usually is I am afraid to check it for each individual program fearing I might make things worse. Is there anything I can do?
I have a different problem with COM Surrogate. I noticed something wasn't right when I got random freeze-ups playing audiosurf which is sensitive to CPU usage. I opened task manager and saw about every 15 seconds, there is a spike in the CPU usage. I checked the processes and saw dllhost.exe (COM Surrogate) is opening up and closing in just a few seconds, and repeats this about every 15 seconds which is eating my CPU. I do NOT get any error messages anywhere. I can view photos just fine. HOWEVER, I do see that any new photos' or videos' thumbnails are not updating. Any videos and photos I had before this problem have thumbnails, but not any new ones I create. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
Every time I click on any particular link, whether in an email or anything else, and it normally goes to that link, I now open up a google search window. How can I fix this so that I can navigate to the link desired?

All the .exe files on my friend's laptop try to open with itunes and all the icons on her desktop show up as .lnk Adobe files! I tried to upload malwarebytes from both a flash drive and then a cd, but her laptop corrupted those too. Itunes is the only .exe file that will open. I do not have the "open with" option on .exe files. Please!!!! I know how to edit registry a little (going in at c prompt), but I don't know what I'm looking for. Again, I will have to enter everything manually--- I cannot download from internet or upload from external source?
Whenever I try to open "Devices and Printers," the green bar at the top of the next window begins moving from left to right slowly and never completes the trip to the end of the bar and the Devices and Printer window never opens. I have to open "Devices and Printers several times over several days with the same result.
I open my documents and click on a folder and it opens in a new window. I've already tried to do the Folder options open in same window, still nothing.
