No Screen Recording Software Works On Win7
Aug 18, 2009
I cannot find any high quality Screen Recording software that will work on Win 7.
Camtasia Studio 6 installs fine and I have tried ALL compatibilty settings, still NO GO.
ADOBE Captivate 4 will not work either.
I have tried several others, all with the same results.
Outside of me posting 100 different error messages does anyone have a clue where I should start with this problem?
I have been a beta tester for MS since 1992 and this issue has confounded me more than anything I have encountered.
BTW I run an AMD Phenom-X4, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 9800 GT, 4GB ReadyBoost and have DivX and all other CODECS freshly updated.

I've just built a new core-i7 system running Win7 64 bit, but none of my existing wireless adapters are able to get a working internet connection. I have an Airlink wirelessN, Dlink wireless g, and an Encore PCI card. None of it worked, and after some Googling, I found that this is a widespread problem - many of these devices simply do not work in Windows 7 64 bit.
I have no clue if this is a drivers problem that simply will take some time for manufacturers to address. But Windows 7 beta has already been out for a while, so this is discouraging.
Are there any existing known reliable wireless adapters (specific models) that work with Windows 7 64 bit? I'm desperate to find one that works, preferably something I can get at a store (Frys or Best Buy) so I can test it immediately.

I've been using the Windows 7 Ultimate release candidate as an evaluation copy for a while now with no problems. I have an ATI radeon mobility X1600 graphics card in my laptop and I'm using an external monitor through my laptop's DVI port. I bought a product key for Windows 7 professional and therefore had to reinstall that version because I'm using Ultimate as the evaluation copy. I have each version on its own partition so I can switch back and forth between the two.
The problem is that the newly installed windows professional copy will not recognize my ATI graphics card and I can't use my external monitor. It has the standard windows VGA adapter drivers installed. I've installed and run the ATI file i downloaded off their site, '9-9_beta_win7_32_dd_CC', and this accomplishes nothing. I looked in device manager on the working ultimate version and the card is installed correctly so I copied all of the drivers and files it says its using and then tried to update the driver for the standard windows VGA adapter and it says it can't find any better drivers than the current ones.
I remember initially having this same problem when I first installed the Windows 7 Ultimate RC several months ago but I have no clue how I was able to get it to work... Any ideas?

when i record screen with any screen recorder (camtasia, camstudio) it records slow choppy, especially when i drag windows they move at 5 fps , it flickers. all in all is too slow. I have the same issue on 3 different computers. one with p4, one with core 2 duo 2.8 ghz with 9600 gt 4 gb ram, and on a q9500 ati 4770 4 gb ram. the same results. I believe it's windows 7, coz this is impossible. the same thing happened with windows vista, but they record fast in windows xp , even on my p4 machine. all computers record the same on windows 7. Do not tell me to adjust the setting coz i will laugh at you. I been douing that for 3 years. camtasia forums and support are not helpful. their products sucks.or can you recommend a different program (free or trial)?

I'm doing a video walkthrough on The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind right now, and I'm using Camtasia 7 as recording software. I'm recording at 800x600 so that viewers can read the on-screen text, and I can still have my notes off to the side. The problem is it seems like I lose half of my frames. A good example of this can be seen in a video from a couple months ago, when I did a fullscreen recording. Entire seconds go by with no movement onscreen. I know that reducing the amount of running programs while I record can help, but I'm still losing a lot of video. There are a few compressor options available to me:Microsoft Video 1
Intel IYUV codec Cinepak Codec by Radius TechSmith Screen Capture Codec Uncompressed So far I've been using uncompressed, because I wanted full compatibility with other programs (I edit in Pinnacle Studio). Would any of the other compressors reduce my frame loss and still work in Pinnacle Studio? Are there any less lossy alternatives to Camtasia?

I want to record Hedgewars, an open source 2D game. I discovered an open source alternative to fraps called Taksi. This seems like a very good option to use, but I cant play/record with it without encountering a significant amount of lag. The game itself though is virtually lagless. What is the best FPS rate/ settings for this, and is there anything else I can do to the computer to make it lag less?

i have an HP Pavillion dv7 with windows7. It is less then 3 months old. Problem- Yesterday the screen went black while i was watching a video, but the sound kept going. so i restarted the computer, and the screen works until you get to the login screen it goes black again. SO i called customer service at hp, and we worked on it for an hour.THe one thing that seems to work is when i go to the device manager, uninstall the display adapters, and restsart in normal mode, then i go and reinstall the ATI device thing in the recovery manager, but everytime after i reinstall the ATI display device thing, it ends up going black a little while later again. lol

I am having an issue of HDMI working during PC boot, but TV loses signal just before Windows 7 log in screen comes up (TV shows "No Signal" at this point). If I use VGA to connect PC to TV, everything works fine. [code] One thing I noticed is that Windows 7 device manager sees my TV as a "Generic PNP Monitor". I have no idea if this is connected to my issue or not. The Intel website says my drivers are up to date when I run their update utility. The Intel Graphics utility on my PC sees my TV as a monitor, not as a TV, but it does list the correct model # (M260MV).I've tried connecting both the TV with HDMI and a PC Monitor with the VGA cable and the computer would only detect the PC monitor with the VGA cable.I have read on an Intel site that others with the Core i3 CPU had similar problems so this may be a CPU/CPU driver issue, but as I said, the Intel Update Utility says my drivers are up to date.

I'm using Windows 7 and I got problem on my desktop. Screen Saver is the only thing that is functioning while all other programs are not available even the start menu. Could this be due to a virus or just a little mistake on its setting? I tried to check problem on desktop properties but when I clicked it, nothing happens. No properties window appear. It seems like applications are no longer accessible.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. Computer was working like a dream and has been for about a year now, when yesterday I booted up after running Windows update, like always, logged on like normal, only to see a blank screen with only my mouse cursor. Neither Ctrl+Alt+Del nor Ctrl+Shft+Esc work to bring up the Task Manager. I am able to boot into Safe Mode just fine, but of course unable to uninstall the Windows updates to the .NET framework.I have tried System Restore several times now, both from the Safe Mode and from the start-up recovery options accessed via F8 upon system startup. From the same menu, I have attempted Startup Repair but alas, Windows does not detect any problems (go figure, right? ).I have ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to check if my hardware was going bad, and upon completion, it rebooted, once again, to a blank screen after being prompted to log in. Mouse works, nothing else does. Upon pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del I am greeted with the following message after waiting roughly 5 minutes:"The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."^Pressing ESC makes the message disappear along with my mouse, so that I am staring at a completely blank screen.I am on my friend's MacBook Pro right now, I'm really hoping someone can help, but I must admit I am reluctant to think so because someone once came to this board with the seemingly exact same problem and no one here was able to help him.Just to reiterate, I can boot up in Safe Mode, with or without Networking as well as accessing the Command Prompt. That's about all I can do.Edit: Now when I do a System Restore, I get this error message when it restarts (everything else is blank unless I restart in Safe Mode): However, when I try to navigate to this location either via Windows Explorer in Safe Mode or via the Command Prompt, one can clearly see that the location doesn't exist. I am confused.

Whenever I boot Windows 7, after it starts, instead of showing the login screen, it show a black screen with a movable cursor. Now, I can go into safe mode, and it works, but, hell, I can even put my password on that black screen, press enter and it will go into Windows and work just fine. But the thing is, it's supposed to show the login screen, not just a black one, so I'm a bit worried of what might be causing the problem, and whether or not it could expand into something worse.

Firstly I'm on Windows 7 64. Over the last few weeks I've noticed that after starting up my laptop, and logging in just fine, the screen would go black for a couple of seconds-- my cursor would appear and I could move it around, but the screen would be black. After 10 seconds or so, the Windows 7 GUI would load just fine and there I would be.
I restarted my PC at 5AM this morning and it did the same. All I did at that point was send an e-mail via Gmail and shut it down again. At 2PM I went to startup my PC and everything went as usual except the PC never left that black screen with the responsive cursor.
I searched here and found that problem many times, but with one difference-- my PC starts fine in Safe Mode.
I used Advanced System Care to fix some registry errors and am currently running a Malwarebytes full scan.
It might be worth noting that I recently installed Batman: Arkham Asylum and as it was frequently crashing, followed some advice to enable everything at startup, which I did, fixing my game problem. That was around the time the black screen first started showing up, and I assumed it was a result of more things taking place during Windows startup.

I discovered that besides VLC player on my laptop all the other video player are not able to work properly (meaning,, Windows Media Player 12, Cyberlink PowerDVD12 and WMPC are able to play only the audio, but not the video, it's just just black screen),, BUT with VLC is no problem playing any video format!! The thing is that I didn't have this problem previously,, all my video players were able to play all the same video files, which they can't now! I have the latest AMD Radeon HD video drivers installed. As I mentioned I didn't have this problem before,, with a previous versions of the AMD graphics card driver. This happened to my laptop a while ago already,, since I have this problem I updated my video drivers 5 or 6 times at least, and no change so far!Why am I assuming that the cause of my problem is the graphics card driver is, for ex. when I had just re- installed my windows (fresh! from Windows 7 to Windows 8),, the video playback was working, while the graphic card was running on the drivers provided by Microsoft! as soon as I am installing the driver for my model of AMD Radeon graphic card I am staring to have the problem. As I mentioned I have the problem for some time already, during this time I re-installed my Windows couple of time, plus I even changed the version of the windows (7to8), for the moment I have the last version of video driver installed, I haven't installed ANY codecs?

This is on a loptop Meldon E6882, running windows 7, to a LED TV HD. From a cold boot both the laptop monitor and HDMI screen show the windows starting screen .. But the HDMI screen goes blank when the login screen appears. I have tried different screen resolutions. No Luck. I have tried from the 'screen resolution' page to get automatically detect the HDMI - No luck I have tried from the 'screen resolution' page to manually select HDMI. Only offers VGA or component, no HDMI.
I think this maybe a disabled driver as I did a manual disabling of these some time ago in order to try and reduce the boot time. I cannot recall the names of the drivers I have put into manual start (some time ago), nor have I found any info on what drivers are needed for the HDMI. The screen driver is an Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000. I'd like to look at some video on the larger screen...

Ok. I have Windows 7 x64 on my computer, and I have seen that with Windows 7 there is a new loading screen. All that I ever get is the same boring green bar like in Vista. Did I do something wrong, or is there an option to change it?

My computer loads normally to the login screen. I enter my password and press enter. It displays the welcome message with the spinning circle thing, and seems to load correctly. When finished, it is at this point my screen goes black showing only the cursor which I can move. When I hover over where the taskbar should be, the screen dims a bit. When I move away from the 'invisible' taskbar, the screen brightens to it's original state. This leads me to believe that the desktop may be loaded, but for some reason is not displaying. After about a minute, everything displays and the computer works perfectly. Occasionally, there is not an issue, and the desktop loads perfectly, seconds after logging in.

Today when I turned on my laptop, everything was booting fine until the welcome screen where I enter my password to log in. It gives me a blank page but it's not loading at all, I see my mouse not to mention. It's working fine when I boot up from safe mode though, that's how I'm typing this :P.Anyways, I really need someone to help fix this.

You know, I've been well impressed over this last week of running Windows 7 that I've treated myself to a new large computer desk, a new case (Antec Skeleton) and a nice set of Creative speakers. Now it suddenly occured to me that Microsoft was bragging recently about the touchscreen abilities of Windows 7, and now I'm thinking "where can I get a touchscreen Monitor from, here in the UK?". Hey, I'm a geek!!
Looked on feebay, but they are limited as to what's on offer.
Any suggestions?

I have a Dell Inspiron, not always but sometimes on start up it restarts to a black screen with a white cursor. Safe mode does work.I don't know why it sometimes does this or what makes it stop. I have tried just letting it try to load up for as long as an hour with no change, sometimes restarting has fixed it but sometimes (like now, it has done nothing no matter how many times I've tried).

when this first occured it went into Repair mode twice - said it could not fix and pointed to System32 DriversWDF01000.sys.Subsequent use of Repair now shows no errors.
Booting to Repair from my installation Disk reports eveything as OK.Moved to Restore point - section shows only one point of todays date -which apparantly was made before an automatic update - ran OK.
I have run SFCscannow but cannot interpret it. - sent to rapiddatashare -lost the ref No. for the moment.

I installed Win 7 sometime around Feb, a dual boot with Win XP. But when I upgraded Win XP to Vista, the option for Win 7 disappeared on the boot screen, and the system would boot straight into Vista. So, I used the Startup repair option from the Win 7, and after rebooting it showed the boot screen with W 7, and Vista. But, after I "repaired" it, Win 7 seems to have lost the Win 7 startup screen. It now shows the "Starting Windows" from Windows Vista, then the Win 7 "welcome" screen.
I realize it's not much of a problem, but is there any way I could get the Win 7 startup screen back?

My A200 has been upgraded to 4GB RAM, and Win7, worked fine for a while, then started randomly freezing with weird screen stuff (video not displaying properly). Power off only worked. Much frustration and removal of progs later, tried on safe mode - works fine. Safe mode with networking - works fine. Can plug it in (surefire way to get it to fault normally) and in safe mode it works fine, in normal mode, immediate fault.
Thought perhaps a horrible malware, did clean install from disc of win7, no change (except now, coz I deleted all the Toshiba drivers, the dvd drive is noisly lol). Can't load progs to run the damned thing properly because it won't run in normal mode, only safe mode. Tried formatting the hdd, but it won't let me (partitions) which I thought were reformatted during a clean install anyway?
Haven't tried changing the charger yet, because it works fine in safe mode, so I thought probably a software issue? Have tried minimal or "clean" normal boots, freezes immediately.

Some might remember I posted a few days ago about installing Windows 7 (64bit) separately on this same comp (different hard drive) to test what drivers worked for the devices I had, in particular the Canon scanner.
Anyway it worked, and I booted into Windows 7 64b fine - but I had a few issues getting back into 32-bit one (64bit one became the active boot. even after i used diskpart and bcdedit etc.
Anyway, I got the 32-bit install to again load as the default (and deleted the 64-bit partition). BUT, I keep getting the Vista booting screen - i.e. the small green loading bar instead of the elaborate "Starting Windows'. I then put in the Windows 7 dvd in and went to repair the install (to try & get the Windows 7 boot screen back), but it wouldnt even find the OS install to repair it.
So basically, its back to the 32bit Windows 7 install fine - but with the older Vista loading screen. Any ideas?
