How do you copy and paste the full path of a mapped drive without shortcuts in Windows 7? If I want to let others know the location of a network drive, the shortcuts on my computer mean nothing to them.

Wireless Usb/pci Adapter That Works With 64 Bit Win7

Nov 22, 2009

I've just built a new core-i7 system running Win7 64 bit, but none of my existing wireless adapters are able to get a working internet connection. I have an Airlink wirelessN, Dlink wireless g, and an Encore PCI card. None of it worked, and after some Googling, I found that this is a widespread problem - many of these devices simply do not work in Windows 7 64 bit.

I have no clue if this is a drivers problem that simply will take some time for manufacturers to address. But Windows 7 beta has already been out for a while, so this is discouraging.

Are there any existing known reliable wireless adapters (specific models) that work with Windows 7 64 bit? I'm desperate to find one that works, preferably something I can get at a store (Frys or Best Buy) so I can test it immediately.

ATI Card Works Fine In Win 7 Ult RC, Not In Win7 Prof

Oct 28, 2009

I've been using the Windows 7 Ultimate release candidate as an evaluation copy for a while now with no problems. I have an ATI radeon mobility X1600 graphics card in my laptop and I'm using an external monitor through my laptop's DVI port. I bought a product key for Windows 7 professional and therefore had to reinstall that version because I'm using Ultimate as the evaluation copy. I have each version on its own partition so I can switch back and forth between the two.

The problem is that the newly installed windows professional copy will not recognize my ATI graphics card and I can't use my external monitor. It has the standard windows VGA adapter drivers installed. I've installed and run the ATI file i downloaded off their site, '9-9_beta_win7_32_dd_CC', and this accomplishes nothing. I looked in device manager on the working ultimate version and the card is installed correctly so I copied all of the drivers and files it says its using and then tried to update the driver for the standard windows VGA adapter and it says it can't find any better drivers than the current ones.

I remember initially having this same problem when I first installed the Windows 7 Ultimate RC several months ago but I have no clue how I was able to get it to work... Any ideas?

No Screen Recording Software Works On Win7

Aug 18, 2009

I cannot find any high quality Screen Recording software that will work on Win 7.

Camtasia Studio 6 installs fine and I have tried ALL compatibilty settings, still NO GO.

ADOBE Captivate 4 will not work either.

I have tried several others, all with the same results.

Outside of me posting 100 different error messages does anyone have a clue where I should start with this problem?

I have been a beta tester for MS since 1992 and this issue has confounded me more than anything I have encountered.

BTW I run an AMD Phenom-X4, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 9800 GT, 4GB ReadyBoost and have DivX and all other CODECS freshly updated.

I was told I could create a copy of windows 7 from initial bootup when turning on my HP Pavilion dv7t notebook by either pushing f8 or f11? Can someone please tell which is the proper key and how to do it from there? I already have the dual layer disc to burn it on, but can I burn it from the cd burner in the computer or an external cd burner(I have one of those as well). This computer has not been turned on yet.

Upgrade Path Problem - Win 7 RC To Vista To Win7 Upgrade

Nov 13, 2009

I installed Win 7 RC on a new build and purchased Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM with upgrade to Win 7 Home premium. The Win 7 upgrade disc has arrived. I understand that Vista must be installed and activated for the upgrade to work. Attempts to install Vista with Win 7 RC running or booting from the Vista disc lead to error code 0x80070103, insufficient free space. My HDD has > 450 Gb free space in 2 partitions. Do I need to reformat the HDD in order to install Vista over Win 7?

Win7 (32bit) To Win7 (64bit) Upgrade Install Error

Nov 8, 2009

I have purchased and downloaded both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows7 Professional (no CDs or media here only download version)

I sucessfully upgraded from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32

Then I upgraded my hard disk (140Gb 500GB) and RAM (3GB to to 4GB)

Now I would like to go from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit

When I try and run the Windows 7-P-retail-en-us.x64.exe file it upacks the box then stops with this error:"We are unable to create or save files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write flies and that that folder is not read only".

I am the System Admin and I have full rights, and have moved the exe and the setup box files to My Documentsand I have modified the directory properties/attributes but I still get the same error over and over.

I searched the posts and some people stated one needs a clean install others say you can upgrade from any version so I am trying the upgrade here especially since the upgrade from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32 was smooth and did require all the extra work of a reinstall.

Reinstall Win7 32bit To Win7 64bit

Oct 28, 2009

I purchased the Win 7 Pro Upgrade 32bit via digitalriver, but I've been doing some reseach and probably should have selected the 64bit version.

- Any ideas how I can get the 64bit version?

- For those who ordered the 32bit back-up disc kit for the extra $15 and have received it, does it come with both 32bit & 64bit?

- I've already installed and activated the 32bit version, but when I go to install the 64bit version, will I need to / is there a way to deactivate my initial 32bit install or will this not matter?

Have Copied Files Named 'Copy Of' Instead Of '- Copy'

Mar 17, 2012

How can I get Windows 7 to name copied files using the scheme "Copy of" (used in Windows XP and earlier) instead of the default scheme "- Copy", whenever a file is copied to the same directory as the original file?In other words, if you copy a file named "Foo.txt" in a directory to the same directory, Windows XP would have named that file "Copy of Foo.txt", but Windows 7 names the file "Foo - Copy.txt". I want the copy to be named "Copy of Foo.txt".There are several reasons why I prefer the XP style file name:

1. It is familiar :-)

2. I have existing files that use the XP style file names, and I want all my file copies to use the same naming scheme. I guess I can do a massive file rename across all my backups, but that would solve only one of my problems.

3. Most of my folders are sorted by name, and using XP style would sort all copies together. On other forums it has been suggested that one can simply sort by date (to get the copies sorted together), but that advice assumes that all copies are created after all other files are created, which is actually not often the case.

4. I often work with long file names, which means that the end of the file name is often obscured, unless I have wide windows (not always possible) and use lots of horizontal scrolling every time I want to select a file. Hovering over a file to get its full name is a cumbersome solution.

5. On other forums some have given the advice to always make copies in subfolders, but I often make copies or copies of copies while I work (it allows me to roll back or to check earlier versions of a file quickly, during my work), and using subfolders would slow me down tremendously (not to mention confuse me).

I know that when TeraCopy is made the copy handler, it renames files in a different way than Windows 7 does, though unfortunately not the way Windows XP did it. Also, if one installs a third-party directory program such as Opus, it asks for a file name every time a copy is made, but I need something that simply names the file correctly immediately.

Creating Bootable USB For Win7 X64 Using Win7 X86

Sep 23, 2009

I'm currently running 32-bit Windows 7 (Professional, full version) on my laptop, and want to use this machine to create a bootable USB drive with 64-bit Windows 7 (also Professional, full version). I tried going through the steps that are available on various tutorials online, but I'm always tripped up while attempting to use bootsect to make the drive bootable; basically I get an error saying that I need to be using a 64-bit OS.

I don't have convenient access to a computer with 64-bit Windows Vista/7 (I work at an academic institution where all pubic computers have XP or Linux), so I'm wondering if there's any way to get around this and create a bootable USB for 64-bit Windows 7 via a 32-bit OS.

Odd Upgrade Path

Oct 22, 2009

I really need some advice if you would be so kind. I haven't been able to find any info from googling from anyone trying to do what I'm doing. I looked over the dual boot tutorial and didn't specifically see anything that would help, but maybe I'm blind. I was hoping someone here would be able to tell me if this scenario is viable before I start?

Right now, I have a XP/Vista (32-bit) dual-boot system. I would like to put Windows 7 over XP, my primary with boot record, and preserve Vista as the secondary (I don't think I need it to be boot-able but it would be nice I suppose).

Is this going to work? And a second question, if you would, can I make the Windows 7 replacing my XP partition 64-bit, with Vista remaining 32?

Will Windows 7 let me format my machines and then the install the 64bit Home Premium versions? I can give it my existing Vista keys, that's no problem. I know that you can't go directly from 32bit to 64bit, but I wonder if I could just use the 64bit disk and pop in my 32bit Vista keys..

Changing HDD Letter And Path?

Sep 21, 2012

I'm sure this has come up before but I'm after more detail. I have a new PC. My 'C' drive is a SSD.A second 2 TB HDD was assigned 'E'.I will choose, where possible to load apps onto 'E' because of the size, restrictions of the SSD. So far I've been hold back but have installed MS Office 2010 on 'E' and the Canon software for a Pixma multi-function.I have now installed 3 more, 1 TB HDDs (from older PCs) and one of these is 'D'.I'd like to change the 2 TB drive to 'D' and change the existing 'D' to 'E'.Microsoft issue a warning that some windows apps will have problems if a drive letter is changed but don't specify any.If I do change the letters, will this cause problems with the path to the Office suite? If problems do arise, does reverting to the original lettering resolve things - or is the registry well and truly screwed by then? Would getting a registry backup done and having it on the desktop be of any use?

I Am Confused About Upgrade Path

Jun 26, 2009

I thought I read some where that you could only upgrade from vista home premium to Windows 7 home premium. I have three computers and would like to take advantage of the presale offer.

I am thinking of purchasing one Windows 7 Pro and one Windows 7 Home Premium preorder upgrade. My concern is trying to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro.

I don't care if I have to do a clean install as I prefer that method anyways.

I am only buying two because I am planning on replacing one of the computers anyways which will come with windows 7.

If I Purchase the upgrades will I be able to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro?

Upgrade Path - Soapbox

May 10, 2009

Ok, so this is part question and part soapbox.

I have been using Vista Home Premium for quite awhile and for the most part I have enjoyed it over XP. I am currently running Windows 7 RC and enjoy this version even more. I am thinking about going to Ultimate version when the option becomes available.

I noticed that the upgrade path is going to be Vista Home Premium to Seven Home premium and Ultimate to Ultimate.

My question is, does this mean that if I want to end up with Windows 7 Ultimate do I need to upgrade to Vista Ultimate for $160 and then upgrade again for what ever MS decided to charge?

My soap box is I feel like Vista users are getting shafted. Windows 7 is essentially a fixed version of Vista. It seems like Microsoft reacted to the poor roll out of Vista by moving to Windows 7 quickly. Windows 7 should have minimal cost to Vista users and more flexibility of upgrading.

Just my thoughts.

Editing Path On VirtualXP?

Aug 11, 2011

I'm running Windows7 Enterprise, and I needed to install a virtual XP machine to run a very old compiler. I need to add an entry to the path so that I can access a folder structure in the command prompt. All of the default paths begin with %SystemRoot%, which I've found is the virtual C:WINDOWS directory. So:

1) Is there a way to add a path to just the virtual C: directory (not C:WINDOWS)?

2) When I add additional paths to C:WINDOWS using the %SystemRoot% syntax, they don't seem to be acknowledged in command prompt.

Path Is Too Deep : Error Message

Jun 5, 2009

I installed Windows 7068 in my Asus G2s Notebook, and everything worked just fine for like 2 months. But, the 7100 version was released, and i wanted it, so i backed some important files up, and formatted my computer. The installation was fine, but, when i was restoring my files from the backup, there was a particular file that wouldn't copy.

It is Fallout 3.iso file. I tried copying it like, 10 times, and everytime i tried to copy, it would stop at 2.4gb +-. After it stopped, explorer wouldnt respond, and its process couldn't be finalized. So, the only solution was to shut down the computer. I tried many things, to see if i could solve the problem (without any sucess)

-Gave full permission to the Folder and Hard Drive

-Tried to copy the file inside the HD and copy it again to my hard drive, but even copying inside the HD, it would stop at 2.4gb.

-Tried many other things, with no sucess.

Until i tried it on my mom's XP Notebook. I copied it, and on 2.4 GB it would say : Cannot copy Fallout3.iso Path is too Deep

Tried everything, but none of it worked.
