Moving A Raid Installed Operating System?

May 18, 2011

So i would like to buy a whole new computer. but i want to keep the operating system which is windows 7 professional. It's installed on the hard drives as raid 5. now i know that the raid key or whatever it's called is stored int he bios so just plugging the hard drives into a motherboard that supports raid 5 won't work. So what can i do to install everything that i have on these hard drives into a new system? Also the operating system is registered online would i be able to re register it or something? i don't have the new computer yet i'm just looking around for something good and for a good deal.

Moving An Operating System

May 27, 2012

I'm in a bit of a predicament. I have a operation of servers which are all the same model (HP DL140) The units don't have an optical drive, so a CD installation is not one of the options. I fiddled around with the bios to attempt installing from USB, but I didn't have any success at that either. The bios of these units are very fickle and very uninformative. I'd prefer to simply access the boot menu and select the USB, but I haven't a clue which key brings up the boot menu.  So, I tried my hand at a different method. I took the harddrive of a server with a working OS and popped it into a server which did not have an OS. To my surprise, it booted normally. So this brings the question: Maybe I can just copy over the files of a working server onto the harddrive of another?  I'd imagine since the files transferred over are literally the same, there shouldn't be any problem.

Switch From Raid 0 To Single Drive With New Operating System?

Feb 13, 2012

We have two disks in raid 0. We want to get rid of them, as they are failing and install a single hard drive with Windows 7. We currently have Vista installed. There are no files I need to copy, just want to start with a fresh operating system. How do I go about this? Can I just remove the old hard drives and replace with the single hard drive and install Windows 7 on it, or is it more complicated than that?

Missing Operating System - RAID Drive - Show Up In BIOS

Nov 14, 2011

I'm working on a computer with a RAID setup. It is 2 hard drives 500gb each showing up as 1tb in windows. Both drives show up in the bios but all of a sudden when trying ot start the computer I get a "Operating system is missing" error.

I'm trying to run a chkdsk form a win 7 64 bit disk and telling it to run on H; (system drive) but it says 'cannot open volume for direct access'.

The other drive, C: is just a recovery drive built into dell computer systems. I tried using a boot cd and running mbrfix to no avail.

Moving Existing Windows 7 Pro 64Bit OS Install To RAID 5?

Jan 3, 2011

I have the following MOBO:

ASUS P7P55D-E EVO
2X80gb Western Digital SATA Drives
2x2TB Samsung Spintpoint SATA Drives

I have already been using the machine with another 80Gb Western Digital SATA Drive with Windows 7 Pro 64Bit installed and now want to convert to RAID 5 for redunancy in case of Drive failure (We all say we will back up but we are all lazy when it comes to it LOL).I have taken out the original OS drive and plugged it into the E-SATA connector on the MOBO, gone into the BIOS, turned on RAID for the SATA Ports on the MOBO, and connected the 2 X 80Gb Boot drives. Entered the Hardware RAID Controller POST, and created the RAID 5 Volume from the 2 X 80Gb Discs. Now boot with Acronis Wester Digital edition.Clone the Original 80Gb Disc to the new Raid Array.Shut machine off, remove original OS 80gb Disc from E-SATA port.Boot machine. It starts to boot, and gets as far as the Windwos 7 Microsoft 4 Colour logo and then I get an error and then have to boot into Windows 7 from DVD and go through the repair process. When the Repair has run it reports the following:

The following startup option will be repaired:

Name: Windows Boot Manager
Identifier: {9DEA862C-5CDD-4E70-ACC1-F32B344D4795}

The following startup options will be added:

Name: Windows Recovery Environment (recovered)
Path: Recoverye52d0bc2-1f15-11df-af10-d764fe3715b8Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition=D76190 MB)

A copy of the current boot configuration data will be saved as:C:BootBCD.Backup.0001 However it fails to do the update How do I get this RAID to boot successfully? I *don't* want to have to re-install the Operating System as that is just too painful a thought?

Just putting together a list for my new October build for the Windows 7 launch and am going to go with a "Raid 1" set up using 2x wd caviar black 1tb drives.

I have not gone down the raid route before but understand that raid drivers needed to be loaded by floppy during installation.

I was hoping not to have to buy a floppy drive so wanted to know if in Windows 7 USB support was available during install to allow raid drivers to be installed from a mem stick when prompted??

Install RAID Drivers On Already Installed Windows 7?

Jun 23, 2010

[code]...

So then I thought, that maybe I can't install the RAID drivers from within the OS. So I caused the BSOD on purpose once again, and then with ICH10R RAID activated and Samsung hard disks attached, I choose the Windows 7 Recovery mode in the boot menu. It sees some problem(s), tries to repair, does not succeed and does not ask for drivers (which I put on a USB stick) to install. I also tried to use the command-line in the recovery: "rundll32 syssetup, SetupInfObjectInstallAction DefaultInstall 128 iaStor.inf" but it gave "Installation failed."

So I'm clueless how should I proceed. Do I really need to re-install Windows 7 and load RAID drivers in the Win7 setup? I don't want to install any OS on the RAID, the Windows 7 is and will be on the SSD. I just want to have a RAID-1 backup using those two hard disks.

SATA RAID Driver - Windows 7 Cannot Be Installed To This Disc

Dec 30, 2009

Loading Windows 7 on a new computer. Trying to sort out this raid issue. Computer is :

Gigabyte GA-EP45T-Extreme
Processor : Intel Quad Q9400 LGA775
Ram : 4gb
Hard Drives : 3 x 1 Tb Seagate
Video Card : Radeon HD 4890

I've enabled the raid 5 in the BIOS. I've downloaded the driver from the Gigabyte Disc onto a flash drive. When I load Windows 7 it says " Windows cannot be installed to this disc. This computers hardware may not support booting to this disc. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu". I've checked and rechecked the BIOS. I also downloaded the MSM64 Driver in the Gigabyte disc and that the one I copied to the flash drive.

Windows 7 Won't Boot - No Operating System Listed / System Partition Not Valid

Oct 19, 2011

Suddenly my Win 7 Home Premium x64 will not boot. The system starts, POSTs then loads the DVD driver, then the screen goes black (not blank but "lit up" black if that makes sense). Then nothing. If I use Hiren's boot cd I can boot up using the "boot from HDD" option fine and Windows operates normally. System restore to a previous configuration made no difference to the original problem. I cannot boot into Safe Mode. F8 just offers me boot order options.

- Running the Windows 7 DVD I find: "No operating system is listed on the Repair Windows option."
- Running Startup Repair finds the following error: "the partition table does not have a valid system partition" which it claims to have repaired, but the error remains and Windows will still not boot.

I followed this advice:
Boot 7 dvd to system recovery options command prompt. Type: Diskpart
list vol (find the vol letter e.g C or partition number e.g. 1 for the system partition )
Sel vol C ( or sel vol 1, obviously use the correct letter or number)
act exi

My system partition was easily identified and listed as healthy so I selected it and made it active. The problem still remains exactly the same. My system is self built just over a year ago, to my knowledge has been running fine, without any hardware issues. I'm prepared to do a clean install if that's what it takes but if there is a way to fix the partition problem without that I'd like to explore it first.

Moving System Partition To SSD?

Oct 26, 2010

I have a new PC (HP) that came with an OEM version of Win 7/64, I also purchased an SSD that I had planned to use for a boot disk with all libraries on a second 1TB HDD.

I successfully installed Win 7 on the SSD and was happy for a bit, until I discovered some instabilities. Long story short, HP does not release the drivers for their in-house products and I could not stabilize the system, so I moved the SSD to Drive D and re-installed from the factory image. All the drivers I need are there and system is 100% stable.

is there a way to move the System partition over to the SSD so I get the 10 second boot that was so nice?

Installing SSD On An Existing RAID System?

Dec 9, 2010

I'm currently using Windows 7 Professional and have 4 internal HD's set up in RAID. Current Setup: 2 - 500GB drives in RAID 0 2 - 500GB drives in RAID 1

I use the RAID 1 drives for backup purposes only. I have 3 partitions on Raid 0, named as follows: A:,B:,C: I have the OS (Windows 7) installed on C: partition and use the other two partitions on RAID 0 for data. Future Setup: I have just bought the Intel X-25 120GB SSD and would like to do a clean OS install on the SSD and still keep my RAID 0 and RAID 1 setup for other data.

Here's my question: 1. How can I install the OS on SSD without disrupting any data on the RAID 0 and RAID 1 HD's?

I would like to be able to install the OS on SSD and still have access to the data on my previous C: drive on RAID 0 (including the OS data). I want to delete the OS data on the RAID 0 HD from within Windows(on SDD) if that makes. Will that be possible?

I'm afraid of losing my RAID drives/data. I have read that I should unplug the RAID drives before I install Windows on SDD and then re-plug them again. Is there a particular order I should do that in? Will the BIOS recognize the old set up if I unplug/re-plug the old drives? way to install Windows on the single SSD without losing the existing RAID 0 & RAID 1 setup and data.

Moving Hard Drive From One System To New Desktop?

Mar 24, 2012

I had Dell XPS 8300 Desktop & had bought & Installed Windows-7 ( Ultimate ) on it's 500 GB HDD.I gave that system to my relative except Hard Drive. Now I bought Dell T-7500 Workstation with only DOS installed on it's hard drive to save some money & because I already have Windows-7 ( Ultimate ) DVD.I took out the hard drive with DOS from the workstation & replaced it with the hard drive that I had in XPS with Win-7 already installed.I then tried to boot it in the workstation but it wouldn't boot & gave error messages. So I formatted the OS Partition & fresh installed Windows-7. Now it does load Windows -7 but first it goes thru some other commands as follows when I start the system.

Dell SAS 6 Host Bus Adapter BIOS
MPTBIOS 6.22.03.00 ( 2008.08.06 )
Initializing.....
Press Ctrl - C to run SAS Configuration Utility
Searching for Devices at HBA 0.....
Dell MPT Boot ROM Successfully installed

Then it loads Windows-7.All of above happens on its own, I didnt touch anything. So what is going on & what do I have to do get rid off those initializing commands ? I have never had this happen to any previously owned Dell systems. Also I haven't installed any drivers yet but Sound, Video & Internet does work.Do I need to install any drivers & if yes, which ones ?Here is the configuration of Dell workstation T-7500 :

Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5645 2.40GHz, 12M cache, 5.86 GT/s QPI, Turbo, HT, 6C
Intel(R) 5520 Chipset
DOS Factory Installed (English)
