View 1 RepliesI have a Dell 8400 and a few questions about upgrading to Win 7 64 bit. (I am a complete NoOb when it comes to installing an OS).
First my specs are...
CPU Type
Intel Pentium 4 HT 630, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
Instruction Setx86, x86-64, MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3
L1 Trace Cache12K Instructions

I will have 2GB of this RAM Thursday with another 2GB of the same RAM the following week or the week after that. Corsair Dominator DDR2 Ram Memory PC-6400 800 MHZ [URL] After the RAM I will be getting a new Graphics Card. Also I have a spare 650 watt PSU if needed.
I ran the Window upgrade advisor and the only things it flagged was (of course) that I only had 512MB of RAM and outlook express. It did say custom installation required, whatever that means.
1. My first question to everyone is, can my Dell even run Windows 7 64-bit?
I googled around and it seems possible.
2. My second question is can I install it with the 512MB of RAM I have now?
3. My last question is can I install this along side XP on my HD?
4. My third question is does anyone know of a good very detailed step by step Noob guide for installing it next to XP?
I have never installed an OS before and if it does not work I am screwed!
I do know it is better to do a fresh install and no I cannot by another HD right now, I know they are cheap but I will be scraping together all I have just for the RAM and Graphics card.
My problem is that, I really only have the time to do this over the long weekend and cannot wait for the RAM to get here.
The guy on e-bay is a clown and did not ship it when he was supposed to and it will not be here in time.
I just need it up and running and can add the RAM as it comes but I am under a serious time constraint and if I don't get this done now over the Memorial day weekend it will be a long time before I have enough time to do this.
I just installed Windows 7 on a dell dimension 8400 everything looks ok except the Multimedia, PCI modem and the ethernet. Of couse without the ethernet I can't get out so I have to get the drivers to my old faithful xp and feed them to the dell.

I am running 32 bit Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 on a Dell Dimension 8400
I am using win XP and had to wipe. I was missing various drivers so I got them off the Dell site. Seems installation order is important, so I think I followed the correct order (tried multiple orders when was still missing a network controller). I have all installed except the wireless controller.
I am able to use internet via ethernet hard wire but can't find the controller for wireless. I used a driver elvaluation site to get the controller I need, but when I downloaded the controller from this site and going directly to the manufacturers site, there isn't an executable file to load the driver. Any suggestions?

I am having difficulty in installing the drivers for a Canon 8400F scanner on a Windows 7 64 bit laptop.I've downloaded the correct drivers from the Canon website, and installed themThey firstly unzip, then they seem to install but I don't get any message that the installation has completed. When I check Device Manager the scanner is not listed (and thus the drivers have not installed).
View 8 Replies View RelatedAs I shutdown/restart my laptop, I notice it switches to a secondary desktop that has been running programs.A good example would be trying to open my Task Manager, I can Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will allow me to open Task Manager - however when I click on Task Manager, it opens on the Desktop running in the background. I can't even access the Desktop in the background, it only shows up as I'm shutting down - closing programs that I tried opening awhile ago.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I bought a new desktop computer about 2 weeks ago and ever since I got it, it's been freezing (locking) up on me at random times. I currently use Windows 7 64-bit. I put in a new graphics card and new memory sticks just the other day and I got the same freezing problem. It's very random. I can be surfing the web and the next thing you know, the whole thing freezes up. I can't move the mouse. Can't do CTRL ALT DEL. Can't do anything. Seems as if the whole computer locks up. The only way to restart the computer is by manually holding in the power button for a few seconds. So since I replaced graphics card and installed new memory, I was thinking it may be something else causing this.

New laptop with Windows 7 Pro 64 and I am transferring stuff over from the dying Windows 7 Starter netbook. On the netbook I had seven Shortcuts in the Startup Folder and they all launched fine at Boot up. I copied them to the Windows 7 Pro Startup and one of them does not run. I can double click the Shortcut manually and it launches fine, just not during the Boot up.The program is SpeedFan (SF). I have tried using various options in the Compatibility Tab for SF and I have UAC set to Off for Admin boots. Nothing allows SF to launch during the Boot up.

If I double click the executable it takes over a minute before the program launches.Equally attempting to access the file properties takes a similar amount of time.(the file happens to be audioconverter.exe (part of a set of programs to re-encode mkv's - e.g. strip out of the dts track and reencode with ac3, etc.)Only files in this set of sub-directories seem to be affected, the rest of the machine performs perfectly
View 2 Replies View RelatedPer microsoft I need to do try a repair install from original disk. Is there a difference between running repair install from Windows or booting from original disk then selecting upgrade install? Is one or the other preferred? Directions say both attempt to preserve installed programs, but not all drivers, and both require reinstalling all the 60 or so windows updates released after my disk. so no differences there.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI run a Dell M6500 laptop with Win7.When connecting to the internet it starts downloading "stuff', sometimes after 5 or 10 minutes, which I have no control over or find out where it is coming from. I have disabled auto update and my anti virus etc. If I go to explorer for internet history the files in doc and settings are locked. I have wiped the hard drive twice and started again from scratch, no luck.I tried to load Win XP but it will not load it, is that because it is a Dell? All my software is legal, and my anti virus is updated after notifying me it is doing so. When starting from fresh without any extra programs it does it also.

I have a Dell M1330 laptop purchased some years ago which is currently running Windows 7. Despite my latest attempts to correct the audio problem, it still persists. My internal speakers are the only ones affected by this problem. When I plug external speakers into my computer they work just fine. The problem doesn't change depending on what type of audio or video I am running. I have run the windows 7 integrated driver updating software and it has said that all of my audio drivers are up to date.

These are correct WS670/4GB PC3200 EEC registered modules as recommended.*memory fan is installed*3 SCSI drives with Adaptec 7901 RAID controller.I've got a dual boot setup, and the system boots and runs fine from the alternate OS (Win XP x64) just fine. The BIOS lists the memory as installed and shows no errors or problems. A memory test indicates that the memory is okay. When I try to do a boot repair from Win7, the Win7 OS is not listed and installing the correct RAID and SCSI drivers from the repair window does not make it visible. The partition is not, in fact, visible from the repair tool. When I put the old memory back in (4 x 512mb SIMMS in slots 1,2,3,4) the system boots and runs fine with Windows 7. What's up with this?
