View 3 Replies View RelatedEarlier today I turned on my Toshiba laptop (Satellite P855-S5200) and got some sort of error screen, and then it brought me to a screen asking if I wanted to do a system repair or start windows normally. I chose system repair, but then it seemed to get stuck in that process (It was taking forever and nothing was happening), so I turned off the laptop (I know, big no no), booted in safe mode, and did a system restore to a restore point from about a week ago. The "starting Windows" screen came and went, no problem. Everything seemed fine till I got to the User Selection screen (the default blue one with the little hummingbird or whatever). Then it just sat there on that screen. I could see the hummingbird and the little squiggly lines, but there were no buttons to click my user. I just let it sit there, and after about 5 minutes, the user names popped up, and I was able to continue using the computer without any problems, no other speed issues whatsoever. It now makes me wait every time, always about 5 minutes, before the user names pop up. It does this when I restart the machine and when I try to switch users.
It is a Pentium Core i7
2.3 Ghz
8 GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Whenever I make a new text file by right clicking and selecting new text file, it says it is corrupt, but when I do it by opening notepad and selecting save as.. it works ok.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just done a clean install of Win 7 Pro 64. I have set up four accounts and for each one I have moved the user folders to a separate hard drive by using the Right Click Properties > Location > Move. I have done this for the following folders:
- Desktop
- Downloads
- My Documents
- Favorites
- Links
- My Music
- My Pictures
- Videos
I have done it exactly the same way on each account (and more than once! I've been imaging the disk and have restored backwards a few times.)
The problem is, on three of the accounts, when I move the My Music, My Pictures, and Videos then they do move correctly but three rogue folders appear named Music, Pictures and Videos. And I can't delete then since they are system folders.
But the weird thing is that this does not happen on one of the accounts!
how to get rid of the extra folders as they're cluttering up the users home folder and causing confusion.

It gives me the error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." This also happens whenever I try to open any drives, such as C: drive. I can however run programs from Windows Explorer, and can right click, then choose open to open folders.
I have already done extensive searching on the subject, tried deleting autorun.ini files, tried some registry fixes, with no luck. I'm obviously running Windows 7, 32-bit, on a HP desktop.

just got Windows 7 ultimate, i got it with an admin/admin account, created a new admin account, and then deleted the old one, also changed the computer name etc...
one weird thing happens im not sure if its related... When i lock the computer, or gets locked by screen saver etc, when i try to logon it gives me incorrect password, i then click switch user and type my password and its ok..
happen to anyone?
For about a month now, I have had this Widows 7 logon annoyance: Sometimes this annoying glitch occurs which won't allow me to login to my account even though I have entered the password correctly; I have to click the Switch User button and then the 'logged in' account. My laptop is set to stay on when I close the lid; I normally ctrl-alt-del and close the lid.

It does not appear in the user folders, where the Sara, Default user folders are* The Sara user name does not appear in the control panel under users, but all items I've copied from my external drive onto the desktop ready for installations etc, are in the Sara 'Desktop' folder within the main 'users' folder - if I deleted the Sara user, it will delete all the stuff I've copied across onto my desktop (memory is gone now, but maybe I copied across my stuff onto the desktop before I created my Steve admin user).* When I paste my favourites folders into the Sara folder, it does not show up when I launch Google Chrome* I am definitely logged in as Steve, as I can see it on the sart menu* I have googled this, and there's info re copying the data from one user to a newly created non-admin user, but options to copy from Sara user are greyed out.

In XP, I simply moved any desired folders into My Documents for backup.What I've found in Windows 7, is these "user" folders seem to be locked in this main folder, and when moved into My Documents, the original folder magically reappears in the main user folder. So I end up with 2 identical folders. One inside My Documents, and one in the main user folder. (eg: My Music)My backup software doesn't like this at all.Is there any way to make these folders behave like regular folders that can just be moved around?

The folders under "users" are the "public" and the my name. I want to change it from my name to their name but it has a lock symbol on the icon and I cannot figure out how to do it. I was able to go into user accounts and change the name there, no problem. But the "users" folder will not change also.How do I do this? I do not want to do a fresh install or anything - this laptop is only one month old but I ended up not liking it. I already installed Abode professional, Office Professional 2010, and a bunch of other software that the buyer is paying me extra for, so doing a clean install would screw that up for them. Is there any way to change the folder name or are they just stuck with it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't like the way Windows 7 show me the "startup menu"... what I mean is I don't want to see the few software or document i've open recently when I press the "Windows icon" (aka Start).
I need to press "Show all programs" to see all my folder. Even if I go in the config of the toolbar, and I choose 0 to see the last program (by default is 10), it's only show a big white startup menu, but i need again to click (or leave my mouse for few second) the "show all program".
I just want to know of there is a way to see directly the "program" folder when I click the windows logo.
I was trying to get into a hidden subfolder to delete a file from a old program. It asked for admin person's. I hit Ok and it look about 10min for windows to update the folder. The problem is that after that now all my folders in my profile are gone. My music, pictures, and everything. I rebooted and loged back in but they are still all gone. How can I my profile folders back? I know there is just something I need to uncheck. I can see that all the information is still in my laptop because checking my HD space I see that nothing was deleted since I have over 50gigs of music.

(The machine currently only has one HDD.)Therefore I want to move C:users to the E: partition. I've already searched for ways to do this and there are seemingly three ways of going about it:1.
