configure a 320 gig Western digital SATA on a Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit as an Data Drive.I took out the 40 gig IDE that was on the Data end,and replaced it so my wife would have more,Gig space to download more movies and,handle extra information. I went to the BIOS and checked to see if it was activated,I went to the Device Manager to see if the PC was reading it and, it is it says that it'a working properly but the,My Computer wont read it,I'd like to find out how to configure,this device so that you can use it,I have a IDE on my main drive and, wanted to use a SATA on the data drive,since it's more reliable.And on the XP theres a area to go to reformat the disk, on Win 7 I know theres an area you can go to to reformat your hard drive so the computer will read it,when you go to my computer ,will I have to reformat the Sata to NTFS like the rest of the drive's on the PC?

In the BIOS on a laptop the disk choice can enable SATA as IDE or AHCI.
If I chose IDE do I actually lose any disk performance -- having IDE makes it easier to have Windows XP as a dual boot system without having to hunt down all the SATA drivers and slip stream an XP disk.
Remember this is a LAPTOP not a desktop so disk performance won't be that great in any case.

How do I set up a Windows 7 System with a SSD boot drive but with all User, Data & Programs (including Games) "Automatically" installing to and run from, an internal SATA Hard Drive, that preferably is labeled "C" drive or get as close to that as possible?!

I an trying to recover data from a seemingly corrupt drive in 500 gig sata HDD which I ran in windows 7 on 64 bit and I made two partitions one being a boot and the other had data on it and then I had one other sata drive that was 200 gig on separate drive with data! When I run on another computer it doesn't seem to read anything or recognize data!how to recover it?

Very little, all the parts were shipped here about four days ago and I spent a couple of hours putting them together. I ran into a hiccup when Windows 7 Home Premium would not get past the extracting phase of the installation, kicking up the error in this thread. I began the first install on a 20GB partition, when that failed I tried just installing it on a single partition. When that failed I tried removing all the partitions and just installing on the unformatted drive, in it's entirety (seemed weird but others said they had luck with this).Testing Methodology:
At the end of each attempted solution I tried to install Windows again.My keyboard is a USB keyboard. All of my boot testing is done with a bootable USB that I have running MS-DOS 6.22. What I Have Tried:Solution 1: First I went into the bios and changed the SATA controller from AHCI to Raid SATA Result = FAILEDSolution 2: I tried burning OEM Windows disk from Microsoft to an iso at the lowest speed possible for my DVD burner (4x).Result = FAILEDSolution 3: At this point I had created and deleted so many partitions I was concerned it may be having an effect on the install. So I went to Samsung's website and grabbed their HDD utility tool. I figured let's kill two birds with one stone and test the drive while also restoring it to it's original state. So I did a low level format and then ran the HDD diagnostic. All came back with no errors. Result = FAILED
On to memory...Solution 4: I downloaded Microsoft's Memory Diagnostic Tool and let it run overnight. It returned no errors. So I decided to use MemTest86 4.1 and let it run for 10 passes, I did find errors then. As of now I am running each module of memory one by one to determine if it is a problem with them or the sockets on the motherboard. So far I have been unable to reproduce the errors I got when both modules were running together. As a precaution I double checked the motherboards specifications on the socket order for memory, all is to specs. Result = [PENDING]What's Next:After my current memory test ends, I plan on checking my BIOS to see if the correct memory speeds were detected in the auto detection. If at that point I'm still unable to reproduce the memory errors, I'll put both memory modules back into the system and run the testing again to see if I can reproduce the errors I got the first time.

Yesterday I had a PC technician around to see why my PC was not booting-up properly and also to change my SSD to a larger SSD. As I am visually challenged I cannot do hardware upgrades etc, so I got a Techie guy in. We used Zinstall HDD by-the-way and I would highly recommend this application for such a job plus, it is extremely fast.Anyway, while he was diagnosing my boot-up issue he discovered I had a malfunctioning network card; while removing this, he noticed all the SATA settings were set to SATA 2.When he reset these to SATA 3, the PC would not start-up! When he set them again to SATA 2 there was no problem and it worked fine?

i purchased a Silicon SiI3512 SATA Raid Controller purely to have 2 extra SATA ports which I am using to connect to my case's external drive bays. I have flashed the bios of the controller and updated the driver to put it in "Base" mode so it is not using RAID. I did extensive research on this and it appears that I have this part right. For now, I am trying to connect a WD1600BEVT 2.5" SATA-II hard drive to one of these ports and am having some difficulty. I can see the drive, but when I try to format the drive in Windows, or a command prompt (using the windows recovery DVD) it hangs. I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue with a SATA-II drive on a SATA-I controller, however, most of the forums I have read state that if there is a compatibility issue, the controller won't even recognize the drive. I searched around to see if there was a way to force the HDD to SATA(150), but the jumpers on this drive are for SSC and RPS. Is there a way to fix this or do I need a drive that is capable of forcing SATA-I speeds? Perhaps even a controller capable of at least SATA-II since that is the minimum of all new HDDs?

i'm looking to upgrade from a HDD to SSD. I've been reading online about my board and apparently the marvell 9128 controller sucks speed wise. I was looking at the Corsair Force 3 because of the read/write speeds. Upon doing more digging though it looks like id be better off running a drive on the SATA 2 ports.

every time i boot up before it lets me sign on, a windows configuring comes on every single time for about to weeks now, and its taking about five minutes to boot up after. i do music and my editing programs and video programs and wmplayer now freeze and skip about every 7 to 10 seconds, making my work impossible.ive tired system restore but it wont let me create a earlier date, or go past the date of the nov 18 2011.before it was showing a black screen when i would boot up and would say" corrupt file sytem ntfs, said their was a corrupt file do to a recent update fail or installed, so i have went to windows and installed every update i could, now the black screen doesnt come on , but the freeze in my programs and media continues as well the boot up. but here whats wierd cuz if i watch videos online or listen to music online there is no freeze? just on when offline?

I have the problem of failure to configure windows, i have seen a few posts on here about people solving this problem but i am a bit of a noob so was hoping i could get some 1 on 1 help.I was stuck in a loop for a while in that i would get to the failure to configure windows screen and it would either restart or would just stay on that screen for hours. i have now somehow got onto my laptop (don't ask me how! just luck i guess) but i was wondering if there was something i could do to stop it happening again. until that time i will be trying to leave my laptop turned on.

My computer got infected by Win 7 Security 2012 rogue virus. I removed the virus with the instruction on bleepingcomputer. I think I removed the virus, but I cannot go onto the firewall. When I go to windows firewall, everything is disabled and thus not able to enable the firewall. So when I click 'Use recommended settings' it says that Windows firewall can't change some of your settings, Errorcode 0x80070424.

Since the beginning of August my Win 7 system installs updates at shutdown and then at the beginning of the next bootup, it tries to configure the updates and fails. I'm pretty sure it's the same updates. How can I find out what updates these are and stop this from happening? I have my C drive, another internal drive and 2 exterior drives. I have used Cobian backup for several years to backup documents daily. Just started using Win 7 recently and decided to use its backup for system files in case my C drive fails. My second external is new and it is 500gig. After the backup it only has 154gig remaining. Is there any way to stop it from backing up the other 2 drives? This is probably very simple, but i did google it and didn't find anything.

I've recently purchased a laptop with Windows 7 which obviously has Windows Live Mail (WLM).I had my mail files etc transferred across from Outlook Express on my old PC and messages to/from BT Yahoo (I have just the one btinternet.com email address) were pointed at WLM with POP3 and all that nonsense(!)It has been configured such that inward and outward emails ALSO remain in my BT Yahoo mail boxes - I find it useful to see these when I access BT Yahoo (webmail)from my work PC or any other PC when I'm travelling without my laptop.This worked fine for a while but I've recently had trouble with duplicate emails being received on WLM. I suspect this might be because my BT Yahoo account is a bit "clagged up" with emails which slows it down and we have a very poor internet connection being rural. I think this prompts BT Yahoo to resend messages and hence I end up with duplicates on WLM.
I believe that (unlike Outlook Express) WLM is "web based" and therefore I SHOULD be able to view just the one "version" of my mail from any PC without the need to log into BT Yahoo at all - if I could do this I guess I could avoid having to retain any messages at all in BT Yahoo and maybe this would solve the problem

I am performing a clean install of windows 7 on my sony VGN-FW520F (which had Windows 7 previously). I performed a secure erase of the HD with "Clean All" command in DISKPART and reformatted the drive in ntfs. When I install Windows 7 64 bit I get an error 85% through that says "windows could not configure one or more system components" and requires a new installation. Did I wipe critical drivers from SONY that are needed to perform an install? If so what steps do I need to take to install Windows 7?

I have been doing lot of reading and looking around but cannot seem to get past this problem. I recently bought a new HP laptop, i7 processor, Navidia GT6300M video card, 8 GB RAM. HP original windows come with so much bloatware and have so many problems that i want to do a fresh clean windows 7 install on the machine. So i got a bootable windows 7 USB drive, actually i downloaded windows 7 home premium from internet and used windows 7 usb tool to make usb drive. When i go install it, first i come to partition table, HP has four partitions, one system and one recovery and two other small ones. I have tried installing after removing all partitions and make just one system drive, i have also tried keeping the paritions and install on system drive. Every time it goes through the install, reboots, does get through updates and all and on the last part gives the above statement and then i cannot get anything to work. I am able to restreo back to factory using recovery discs so windows work that way.

Is there a way that I can have Windows auto configure my IP settings, so that when I'm connected to my home network, it uses the static iP settings I have, but when I'm at school or anywhere else, switch back to dynamic? Normally I have to go into the settings and turn it on and off every time.
