How do I set up a Windows 7 System with a SSD boot drive but with all User, Data & Programs (including Games) "Automatically" installing to and run from, an internal SATA Hard Drive, that preferably is labeled "C" drive or get as close to that as possible?!

In addition to that drive, I have a 1TB media drive and a 1TB drive that holds my user files as well as all my programs. I can't seem to figure out how to ensure that all the short cuts for the programs and data for the user file will run smoothly on the fresh install. Is there anything I should do before nuking the SSD and anything additional that I should do after the install or just treat it like a fresh SSD/HDD install but use the already existing user data? tl/dr: Reinstall windows on boot drive (SSD) and retain users folder/program files on separate HDD? edit: creating a clone image and using that won't work here, the actual OS files are bad

When I boot into the standard user, I am prompted by UAC for the admin password for 4 programs to start. All the programs are ASUS utilities that came with mymotherboard.I have checked the permissions of the programs and the User group has full control.Also, these programs do not show up in the MSCONFIG startup tab. I want the utilities to run but do not want to have to authenticate every time I boot

So I went to remove some programs thinking that was the issue, with no luck. *snap* So I did a disk cleaner run, removed 32gbs of info of it. Went to install ''Assassins Creed 3'' (Got the game off ''Gamerfanshop'') installed it my HDD. All was good, checked my SSD now its back down to 12gbs (82gbs total). Went to see what the issue was, it says that there is 41GBS of info on my Windows user. I open it to see where all the information was and I only find 12gbs in it...

The last time I re-installed windows 7 I had to take ownership of all my data even though the user name on the old install and then new install was the same. After reading the forums I understood that the SID for my user name was different between the old and new installations.
So my questions are
1) Is there anyway to assign the old user SID to the user created in the newly reinstalled OS so that I don't have to take ownership for a huge number of files/folders recursively?
2) If there is no way to assign the SID how do people store their data to allow for easy reinstall of the OS/Migration to a different computer?

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just got my new Vantec IDE/SATA to 2.0 USB Adapter installed. I use it on my laptop to give me extra storage space.. or plan to.. this drive already has a good copy of Win 7 installed and i'd like to boot into it from the USB adapter so it will be easier for me to find out what i need to back up.
I did try to boot from USB and windows does start to load then crashes.. I don't know if it's due to the Vantec unit or if I just need to repair the MBR on the drive. The drive has been sitting in a safe place for about 8 months not being used.
As SSDs are undoubtedly the way to go for the OS and booting, I am curious how one can configure Windows 7 to install on C: yet save all user data on D: (which is where the 2TB drive is). The main reason being the space is limited on C (SSD is only 90GB) and the media structure of the user library with videos, documents, etc can easily span hundreds of gigs.Is the only way to do this to manually change the user location to D:? If so, how is this done?I'll be building a number of systems soon and want to have some sort of C: boot D: user data standard which falls within the management of the traditional Windows 7 Library structure.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently purchased two 30GB SSDs which I have set up in a RAID 0 array and I have installed Windows onto these drives. I have a second, 2TB Seagate Barracuda Green HDD that I have used to put my user profiles and additional programs/games on as it wouldn't fit on the SSD.Everything was fine for a few days after installation. Then this morning I rebooted the computer and it just stalled on the flashing cursor (underscore) in the top left corner of the screen. I did the basic fixes (Windows repair, checking RAM) and nothing worked.Then I thought that I should try disconnecting all but the SSD with the OS on it. SUCCESS! It booted to Windows but couldn't find any programs/user data so it created a new "profile". I shutdown the computer and tried reconnecting just the data hard drive.I have two additional hard drives (used for backups) that don't affect anything at all when I plug them in.Does anybody know what could be the problem? I'm at a loss and I need the computer
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently build a new system with win7 64bit. Everything went well untill I exchanged a blue ray drive with a dvdwriter (1 day later). Win7 recognized the drive in device manager but did not assign a drive letter nor would the drive open (function). After trying everything I can think of I decided to reinstall the sata drivers from the asus websitebecause I wasn't able to use the motherboard disk with the DVD drive for installation) the system restarted and never booted back up. The bios recognize the ssd as 1st boot but win7 does not boot back up. As a matter of fact the hd LED doesnt flash anymore like it did when the system was working. I also could not use 5 USB ports (i was going to reinstall the drivers after the sata drivers) from the beginning of win7 install and Bluetooth comport not available. Did I screw up the bios? (bios flash with USB?)

I use a Macbook for my personal use usually, but when I turned on my PC after not using it for a couple of months, all of my user information is gone: Documents, music, everything. The only thing is I don't think it's gone, I can't access my music using iTunes on that machine, but I can access it using Windows media player. If I try to open OneNote pages, I get nothing. I have run Spybot and AVG antivirus. It seems as though my user account information is being hidden. Other user accounts (my wife's and a guest account) are working just fine. I would prefer not to return to a restor point, as I don't even know when this was lost.

It appears my regular Windows 7 account (a "super admin" account) is blocked from other users. When I try to access the user files from another Windows 7 account, or from my Windows 8 side, it does not let me access the files. Is there a way around this? I'm guessing its some tiny setting or something I have missed or overlooked.

Is there a certain way to set up the user files in Windows 7 so that they are all on the HDD? After I installed Windows 7 I just clicked all my user files and dragged them to the HDD. I now think I may have messed up because I now don't see the APPData folder. Maybe that is hidden in Windows 7. And what are page files? I set up my new computer by first installing the OS, then drivers and most used programs on the SSD. Then it got confusing what should I put on the slower HDD. I surely don't want temp files on the SSD but how do I get IE or Google temp files to go to the HDD? I heard you don't want to fill up the SSD too much or it starts to slow down. But every time I want to install something, I stress out trying to figure out if I should install it on the SSD or HDD. Is there a tutorial on this? Back before the SSD it was simple that everything went to the HDD. Maybe I'm overthinking things and making it more difficult. It just seems like everything is a mess having some stuff on two different drives.

These files were on an external USB drive and I was trying to open them from there. I checked permissions and it appears there is full access. I already have a partition in my hard disk ( K: ) where existing User profiles/data are stored. Luckily there is only my profile and one for a guest user. I've read through some of the Tutorials on this site on how to create new users on a different drive/partition at the point of installing Win 7, and I've read how to change the User Folder Name of a profile.The fear I have is that the newname user in the 64bit will obliterate the oldname at the point of being used for the first time.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI build, and then support many computers for my friends and family. I have recently started making them feel a bit more "manufactured" by using a factory-style recovery option (press F9 at boot to enter recovery / uses a hidden recovery partition etc...).
The issue I have though, is I often get asked to "wipe" someone's computer following a virus/malware infestation (and yes, I do supply AV, but that isn't always enough).
So, I use Sysprep to install all additional software, drivers etc... but the one problem I have is that I like to have, and usually always configure PC's to store items like Documents/Pictures/Music/Videos etc... on a seperate partition.
The problem is, when I configure this in Sysprep - the settings are lost when the user completes OOBE.
Ideally, I do not want to move the entire "Users" directory, I just want the libraries to never look at any folders on the C: drive, only the ones on D: (D:\%USERNAME%Documents etc...).
I want it so that when files "detect" where to save, it locates the appropriate directory on the D: drive, so they dont have to always manually locate the folders.
The reason I dont want the entire "Users" folder on D: is that following a restore or 2, it will get messy...
I would like to either automate this during setup, or would happily take a manual approach during Sysprep - as long as it applied these settings to all users as and when they are created.
I would like the cleanest way to do this, ideally without junctions/symlinks.
I know how to clone my entire system by going to Control Panel, Backup and Restore, and Create a System Image, but this ostensibly creates a duplicate of OS state, and the entire drive, data and all (for me around 500 GB).I also know how to just backup data alone, but what I don't know how to do is backup just the OS and all installations (separate from raw, individual data and media files), so in the event of disk failure, I can simply reload the old system and programs (but not media files).
View 3 Replies View RelatedQuick summary: SATA Controllers on motherboard are not working. Ordered and installed a PCI-E SATA Controller Card. Connected Hard Drive & DVD Drive to new card ports. Upon attempting to boot installed windows 7, it spontaneously restarts before loading. It seems that I need to get the Controller Card's drivers installed. i try startup repair mode, and I can load the driver and see the Windows 7 installation after that, but then I don't know how to permanantly add the drivers for this installation.
