How To Find Out What Program Is Running
Jan 15, 2013
just wondering if it is possible to find out if a certain program was running on my computer at a given time. I'm not talking about a scheduled task, but I had a program running at night, woke up and it wasn't running, so is there a way to tell what time it was last running or stopped?

I have been trying to install a weather programme. I have had a lot of problems so un-installed it. When I try to manually delete a few remaining files I get a message that "Errorther instance of the program's .exe file is running. Program will be terminated." How do I find this to get rid of it? Nothing shows up outside of the programme files (x86) when I search.

I am running Windows 7 professional on a 4 core Intel i5 laptop. I have a Fortran application which runs in a DOS command window. This application is compute intensive and takes a long time to run. Is it possible to run it in parallel using more than one core to do the computations? If so, how can I do this? This program has been running for 12 hours without interruption, and it is still chunking away but slower. That is it seems to pause 5-10 seconds before flashing up the next file. I don't think my data is unusually large at just over 1 million files, and my hard drives total 2,946 GB with each well under 50% used capacity. All other programs can run smoothly and Windows Task Manager Shows no program is stuck. But if I need to wait for 1+ million files to be examined at 5 seconds each, it won't be done in my lifetime! What do I need to do differently?

Using Windows 7 Professional 32-bit We haven't changed any hardware or BOIS lately. About a week ago, Windows Update would start to hang when down loading &/or installing an update. After this happened trying to shutdown would cause one of two things - Very long Installing Update followed by Reconfiguring Windows and it hanging or Windows is Shutting Down and then hanging. After that, the only way windows would shutdown normally is by first going into safe-mode and doing a shutdown.Using the Troubleshoot Computer Problems-Systems and Security-Fix Problems with Windows Update selection offered in the Control Panel results in An Error occurred while Troubleshooting. On another note, while trying to add Windows games(such as solitaire) from the control panel "Programs and Features" by clicking on the "Turn Windows Features on or off" results in a Windows Features Box which displays "Please Wait", and it hangs.I've tried any number of solutions for the Windows Update problem(Fix It, etc) to no avail and I'm starting to think that its a bigger problem. Also, I've scanned the computer with Microsoft Security Essentials.

I have Sony Vegas Pro 10.0 (32 bit) installed on my computer, which runs Windows 7 (64 bit). I was wondering what the effects of this are. What am I losing by running the 32 bit version instead of the 64 it version of Sony Vegas?

Even if I type in "System restore" in the start menu nothing comes up so did multipoint disable or remove it? (I am in maintenance mode).

So my system (updated specs in my profile) has been running perfectly since first built in January.Saturday, a Steam update came out. Ever since then, I have had major problems. It starts with the entire system totally freezing and occasionally BSOD.If I reset (hardware reset button), then bios can't find any of my hard drives (two different SATA channels), but it can usually find the DVD (also SATA). Sometimes it will hang on the drive part of boot up. (ACHI mode is enabled.)If I do a cold boot (hardware off, wait 15 seconds, then on), then it boots and runs fine. for about an hour, maybe two... then the above happens again. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, games, surfing, or not even at my computer. I did notice that the drives were running much slower than normal, so I updated the Intel Response Time thing (whatever you call it). That greatly improved drive response and boot time. But it did not cure the crashes.Other than verifying all the case wires were firmly connected, I haven't had time to do anything else.I can't imagine how a software update (Steam) could frack up my bios or my mb, but that is the only thing that has changed between running perfectly to totally unstable.
I'm planning to uninstall steam and reinstall.I'm not confident that will help if the update has caused another problem.I don't know if it's Windows 7, Steam, hardware, or a bios issue.

In the power settings, I set the monitor off time to 10 minutes. When I get away from my computer more than 10 minutes, an invisible program start running. It uses harddisk like crazy, and I also hear the CPU fan working faster.I used "Process Explorer" to detect this program. I see a "svchost.exe" terminating in the last second as soon as I turn the monitor on by a mouse move or keyboard input. Unfortunately I am not able to see the parent process because it terminates immediately when the monitor turns on.

On my W7 machine (Dell X1) everything is working fine. I want to upgrade the BIOS so I downloaded the exe to do so. When I attempt to run it I get "Program Access Denied" no matter whether I run it normally or as administrator. Since my account is an administrator account it shouldn't matter. I've tried using the cmd window, but that doesn't do it either - always the same message. I've checked that the permissions on the file should allow it.

Is there a way in Windows 7 to have some programs run on startup, and some not based on if you are connected to an outlet or using a battery? For example, when I am running on battery for the day, I want to conserve battery life so it would be convenient to have only the bare essentials startup that are necessary for the laptop to work normally.A couple of years ago, I used a program that delayed startup applications but I am looking for a way to have different options based on battery or outlet use, Like how the Power Options allows a a few different tweaks based on battery or being plugged in.

In our corporate environment we have an application that accesses a centralized database as the currently logged in user. The nature of this application requires giving the user read/write/execute permissions directly to the database.Obviously this is a security risk since an educated user would then be able to access the database directly from the command line and be able to do things beyond what the application allows. What we'd like to do is create alternate domain accounts for each user that have the necessary DB permissions and then launch the application as that user instead of the logged in user.I'm aware of the built in RunAs command but, since that prompts for the password, it wouldn't be any different than the current user having access.

I am having a very strange problem with Windows 7 x64.I need to use a sort of mathematical software that was developed in Fortran and it is 32 bits. The program runs okay and gives good results. But after some time, the program works normally but instead of the previous results it starts to give me just 0 (zeros) even if i perform the same calculation than before.

My Acer Aspire running Windows 7 and using an ethernet cable can't find an internet connection. It was working fine then I downloaded a pre-loaded version of Microsoft Office 10 suites and the next time I tried to get online the connection was gone. I didn't download the Office from the internet so I can't imagine it is a virus but I don't know what could have happened.

The issue here is all my programs would freeze and I was like wth is going on? So after it happened a couple of times, I finally figured out what was going on. The system was using cpu power ranging from 20 to 50 percent and my ram was using roughly 20 to 32 percent. The weird thing about this is my computer cpu usually is around 2-5 percent and ram is around 5-12 percent when doing normal day activities.I have a vortex 120 gb and I have it updated to the latest software. My hypothesis is that there is a system defragging working in the background because I see my hard drive space going up and down. It'll go down 20gb and go back up. Sometimes goes down a lot sometimes not that much.I have three programs and I've tried closing all three.
Bitdefender-no auto defrag Iobit advance system care- I turned auto defrag off but even it the settings it's already checkmark not to defrag ssd tuneuputilites- turned off auto defrag also and same thing as earlier, there's already a checkmark to not defrag ssd
edit(forgot to mention that I turned system auto defrag off also)I ran antivirus scan and malware scan already with no luck.So here's where the big mystery comes into play. Even though there is cpu usage and ram usage when I go to windows task manager, I can't find anything that shows it's using ram and cpu even though it is.Very annoying with everything freezing. Even if I restart it still continues.

A certain set of programs take over a minute to run. If I double click the executable it takes over a minute before the program launches.Equally attempting to access the file properties takes a similar amount of time.(the file happens to be audioconverter.exe (part of a set of programs to re-encode mkv's - e.g. strip out of the dts track and reencode with ac3, etc.)Only files in this set of sub-directories seem to be affected, the rest of the machine performs perfectly

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and I'm using the program Expressit 3.1 to create my CD labels.I downloaded it from here: exPressit SE - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.comow, the files it creates, of which I have several made using its previous version, 3.0, are suffixed .exp. I have set my Windows 7 installation so that ExpressIt is the default program to open these files. Double-clicking an .exp file should therefore open that CD label in the ExpressIt program. However, when I double-click an .exp file, the ExpressIt program does not open so that I can work with the file. If I run the ExpressIt program first, then 'Open' the file from within the program, it all works fine.(The problem with this 'workaround' is that when going to Open the file, its default directory is nowhere near the directories containing my .exp files and takes ages to browse to, so I don't want to do it like that).
