Oct 21, 2009My hard drive is partitioned C: and F:. Will a clean install of 7 over XP currently installed on C: mess with my F: drive?? In other words can I save all my stuff to F:??

Create OS Image Only For Re-installation From Partitioned Hard Drive?
Jul 19, 2012Not exactly sure how to explain or even exactly what im looking for but basically I had an older laptop running windows 7 home premium that allowed me from the boot menu to re install windows & home premium w/o key or anything. It was placed on a partition of my hard drive. I would like to do this again but im not sure what exactly im looking for or how to search for it in shorter terms. It was an MSI Intel duel core laptop. I would like to put it on my toshiba quad core. Im familiar with partitioning software and image restoration but not sure what exactly i should be looking for to do this. Just a clean Reinstallation of my OS without needing keys i dont care to back up any information except my os which is a clean install. Update Toshiba has this HDD recovery but i am not sure if this is what i need/want. MSI had a MSI recovery which did what i want. Is this the same/similar?

When I did it using the instructions that I had during setup, Windows 7 load only with the system drive! Where did all the other memory gone? Aug 30, 2009So I installed Windows 7 RC from the file directory from XP onto my other drive previously. I ran into problems the other day with XP and Windows 7 no longer shows up in the boot menu to select.
What are my options here? I am presently downloading the Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK).
BTW, I can't find the original file for Windows 7 RC. Does anyone remember the name of it?
Issue With Partitioned Drive
Mar 9, 2009I'm trying windows 7.
After having installed it I've seen something strange.
I usually have the disk drive partitioned as following:
C partition, the root one (with programs and OS)
D partition, with all the stuff (projects, downloads, etc.)
Now, after the first boot in my computer I've seen only the partition C.
So, I've opened the computer management / Disk management. Here I've found the partition D.
So, I've assigned a letter to the partition D and now win7 seems to see that partition correctly.
But if I try to do a scandisk (via TOOLS / Error-Checking), a message appears asking to dismount the partition: 'Windows can't check the disk while it's in use. Do you want to dismount this volume first? Note: All opened handles to this volume will become invalid.'
That's sounds really weird to me. Now my doubt is how win7 is managing this partition.
Any hint?

Jul 4, 2012My current hard drive is dying, so claims Windows and Hitachi Drive Fitness Test. I bought a replacement drive 3TB drive which requires GPT partitioning. I have 64 bit windows and a UEFI motherboard, so I know I can use the drive as a boot drive for a brand new installation.
My question is how do I move the entire contents of my old drive to this new drive and keep it bootable?
I asked on other another site and they suggested I first let the Windows installation disk partition the drive GPT correctly for Windows, then copy the contents of the old drive to the new one. However, another person on that site said that that would break all the symlinks (didn't know symlinks played such a crucial role in the OS) and that I should use a cloning utility that knows how to copy NTFS. Was this person off base, or is it impossible to create a bootable copy of a Windows installation by just copying all the files (this would be from live linux of some type, not Windows itself)? If it is impossible, is there a utility that can copy the contents of a partition correctly, without needing to clone the entire partition table? Also, I have no room to make an image of my old drive anywhere.
Finally, does anyone know if clonezilla can copy an mbr partition to a gpt partition automatically, essentially doing exactly what I need, or will it always copy the partition scheme as well?
Clone Hard Drive To 64gb Flash Drive And Restore To Another Hard Drive?
Nov 14, 2012I have a hard drive I want to backup to a 64gb flash drive and then restore it to another different hard drive than where it came from. I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.

Oct 25, 2011So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it. I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times). I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. Reloading Windows 7 On Partitioned HDD
Apr 15, 2011I need to reload my w7 os onto my pc.Question i have is my hdd is partitioned and if i format and reload the os onto the C: partition will i be able to access the other partition after the reinstall? It`s not a recovery partition, don`t have that but i do have some info on it that i want. I know it should probably be backed up just in case but there is about a 100GB`s of "stuff" on it and i don`t have that available free space on any other drive that i have. Am i risking losing access to this info if i go ahead and reload the os?

Aug 19, 2012I got this new laptop last week and after partitioning the HDD and installing the Windows 64Bit and installing all the required programs I noticed that there is a vertical line on the display (faulty LCD panel) and now I have to return this laptop and get another new laptop as replacement. I had created 4 partitions of the its HDD and installed the windows 7 on the C drive and Additional programs on D drive. E and F drives are for work related files and storage. I have created a System-Image and a Windows Repair Dsk using windows Backup and Restore utility, so that I donot have to through the tedious process of installing OS, Drivers and all those programs again manually. It created an image from C and D drive (as D drive contains program files as well). Now my question is when I get the new replacement laptop with a fresh un-partitioned HDD, should I partition the HDD before restoring the system image using Windows7 Repair Disk? Or would it created the partitions automatically?

Oct 8, 2011make a dualboot comp by adding windows XP to a new partition. I created the new partition with 20gb. (From the 500 of my actual harddrive)But before I actually installed on that, I got distracted with a second harddrive that my dad got(for no reason). It had a full copy of Windows XP backed up on it from another computer, so I figured I would just use that for the dualboot. I plugged it in (wired the same way as my old harddrive, but different data slot), restarted, checked the harddrive in explorer - all the data was there / reading correctly / etc, and I used 'easyBCD' to add the new harddrive to the boot list.(Which, of course, crashes if I try to start it. I just wanted to see what it would do). For a reason I can't remember, I unplugged the second harddrive for a bit, started the computer on accident (I don't know if anything loaded before I shut it off), and then when I plugged it back in.Windows 7 would not launch. It goes to a DOS-like window, except it's just a flashing _ and it never does anything even after a few minutes. XP didn't work still.. so I decided to reinstall XP (as I couldn't tell which harddrive was which on the list, I unplugged the main harddrive while installing onto the new).. and when I did this.. it formatted and installed fully... then restarted.. then restarted.. and restarted.. and just kept restarting, never showing any thing past the manufacturer logo/BIOS load-button-message-thing. So, I then try to use my 3-disk Windows7Recovery disk(burned myself with a program apparently included by the manufacturer.) It installed fully, appearing to work.. but when I launched it, it said "Invalid Partition Table" and wouldn't boot past that. When I insert my driver installer disk, it gives me a basic DOS window thing. dir A: shows the files in the disk. dir B: for some reason shows the same. C: says "Error reading from drive C: DOS area: general failure". All other letter:'s just say "invalid drive". (I'm doing this with both harddrives in.) I attempted connecting the harddrives to an old computer, but it gave an error for both. (It detected the harddrives, but said it had an error reading from it. Windows Explorer asked me to format it... {i'm willing to format one of the drives if anybody thinks it will help, but the old harddrive has data I'd prefer not to lose.} ) Looking on google, I saw several problems that all have similar problems (less overdescripptive than I am though) but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Also - as I have two different with different errors, I only need to make one of them work.)Also - my other available computer has a CD burner / floppy drive if either are required. I also have several USB's. The computer can boot from USB's and CD's (tested), and I could easily take the floppy thingy and connect it to the computer.also - this computer is probably still under warranty unless unscrewing the hard drive voids it. .. does that count as modification of the computer?

Jan 9, 2012I had Windows XP operating system with users and saved my files on a partition. Just installed Windows 7 and now I can't access the partitioned files due to permissions. If I try to open a file, I get the message "You Don't Currently Have Permission To Access This Folder: Click continue to permanently get access to this folder". If I click continue, it tells me to go to the security tab. Once there, it tells me it's unable to display the current owner. I can still gain access to the specific folder (as an administrator) but not the sub-folders. There are thousands of folders and I would have to do them individually. Is there a way to blanket share all the files on my partitioned drive?

On my external is an 80 gb partition that holds the clone of the ssd, the remainder of the space is a partition called G: When I boot from my ssd I can't access either partition on the external drive, although windows sees both partitions in the disk manager and says that it is in conflict with the data on my ssd. When I boot from the external I am unable to see let alone access the G: partition. I am aiming to be able to access the G: partition both from my ssd and from the ssd clone partition. Just a side note, when I plug the external into my netbook, everything is fine and I can both see and access both partitions.

If these can't be resolved, wanted to reinstall Windows 7-64 fresh....Not really relevant but here's the partition scheme:
** - System reserved (100MB)
C: Boot Drive (64 GB)
D: Swap & Temp Files (16 GB)
E: Games (480 GB)
F: Programs (64 GB)
G: Data (256 GB)
H: Backups (remainder)
So I imagine that things haven't changed too much ... The install DvD will identify where Windows is and ask me what I wanna do but how does the presence of this 100 MB hidden partition fall into the mix ? Will it, like previous versions just write over what it needs and leave D thru H alone, or are special instructions necessary ?
Adding Partitioned Programs After Fresh Install?
Nov 22, 2011I have recently completed a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit on my laptop (Dell Studio 15) using the supplied Dell CD. The install went fine.
The Problem:
My drive is partitioned into various logical drives - i've installed the Operating System onto one (c), all my programs onto one, and games onto another etc.
Now, after the fresh install I no longer have any installed programs in Programs and Features or the Start Menu (however the programs are still installed on the logical drives). If i go to the programs' folder and open the shortcut they are not loading correctly, and i get various error messages or problems depending on the program.
How can i:
1) Get my programs to work correctly without manually finding all the uninstall folders and then re-installing them. 2) Add the programs back to the start menu and Programs and Features.

The computer writes everything to the smaller C drive, leaving D completely empty.I only have about 25G left on C and would like to find a way to change the way files are saved or some other workaround that will let me take advantage of the entire disk.I am not a very tech person - a mid-level user, so I need a solution, which will not create problems of programs not recognizing their paths afterwards.

Aug 21, 2012I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

Sep 7, 2012I installed Ubuntu on my computer a few months ago and created another partition for it on my 1TB hard drive. I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.
There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.

I am so worry because my important data is kept inside the hard disk, and i still not yet do any back up copy on it.I searching on this forum and learnt that i need a window 7 installation disk to repair it, but my problem is the computer dealer not give me any windows 7 installation disk when i baught this laptop as their said all the driver and windows program already kept in side the harddisk.I tried to remove the laptop hardisk which is a 500GB toshiba SATA hardisk. Then, i use the other laptop with Windows XP professional with the intention to copy yhe file inside the toshiba hard disk.However, after plugged in the hard disk to the other laptop, under the disk management, it shows that the toshiba disk as : dynamic disk, unreadable.i having problem to backup the data inside the toshiba hard disk.....
