My folders on my hard drive are hidden (the only way I can view them is through Folder and Search Options in Organise). I can not unhide. I don't have this trouble with any other drives, or elsewhere on my computer, so it seems somehow to be associated with this specific drive.Of course I check to make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is turned off.

View 3 Replies View RelatedA folder has disappeared from an external hard drive, as confirmed by plugging it into another computer and checking, searching for several filenames it should contain on all possible drives (with hidden files shown), and searches with Recuva and testdisk of deleted files. There is no discrepancy between the size of the remaining folders and the reported size of the folder that contained it along with the remaining folders.
The drive in question is a 2TB WD Mybook external that may be showing its age- another folder had a cyclic redundancy check error, and the folder in question developed one several weeks later. I'm making plans to move my data off and have already duplicated the most important files on it.When the folder developed the CRC error mentioned in the previous paragraph, I ran scandisk. It was after running that utility that I found it had disappeared, so that is the most likely reason. However, the other folder remained (with error unfixed, eventually resolved by using testdisk to copy the folder to another drive.)
I am trying to completely erase everything from my hard drive (windows are not installed on that hard drive). So is everything deleted by going to the hard drive and right click -> format? or does this do what a regular Windows 7 format does? I mean to completely erase all hidden files that can be restored and such.

When I click into my IE8 Favorites, my HD folders are appearing there. I did some tests and if I try to delete them, my original HD files are deleted.
Maybe it happened when I tried do bring back my favorites from my backup files (ex Win XP), and I think that IE8 added all folders of my c: hard drive instead of only my favorites bookmarks.
Now, I can't even add new bookmarks.
Please my friends, is there anyway to fix that?
I have 465gb of files and folders on a 500Gb hard drive that needs to be cut/pasted higher in the folder hierarchy.

The reason this happened is my HD broke down and I had to send it to a company (ChronoDisk) to extract the information to another HD. This is how they sent it.
I need to move those files because the path used by many programs/files are broken. Is it possible to do this without actually cut/pasting? My guess is it might crash half way or simply not work at all because there is not enough empty space to make a cut.
few folders in my external hard drive are missing. I am running a scan and hopefully it'll fix, but it takes so long to scan the hard drive as it's a 3 TB hard drive.

All of a sudden, when I click to view my folders, they are completely empty. When clicking on the My Computer option, my hard drive is there, showing 76 GB free out of a total of 232 GB, but everything appears to be gone. When I click on those files, I receive the error stating I am afraid to re-start or unplug my hard drive.

Anyway, one thing I really like about OS X is the ability to drag a folder from desktop to computer, then the window auto opens, displaying root, then you can drag over another folder (which opens to display sub root) and so on until you find the place where you want to dump the folder.
Is there a way to do this in Win 7 (or Vista)?
EDIT: NEW = it will allow you to drag a folder from desktop to start button than into my documents folder. Not bad but better than nothing. All we need now is for my documents to open and have it display sub folders and/or the ability to drag anywhere. Advice?
I am trying to get my music off my ipod to my laptop win 7 home. 32 bit. When I goto folder options and select show hidden types. I hit apply and ok. but it wont show up and when I return to the menu it stays on hide hidden files.

In case it makes any difference, the computer that hard drive originally was in ran Windows XP Pro.I recently got a new computer, with Windows 7 and had the hard drive put into this new computer, along with the hard drive that came in the computer.I can get to the drive itself, but when I try to access folders or files, either access is denied or folders which should contain more folders, are empty. I have tried changing the permission and ownership options on the drive, but no luck.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 500gb seagate external hard drive, and already used 240gb space. It worked fine until yesterday suddenly i could not access the files at all. I checked disk management, and it showed that my external drive became RAW drive. I tried to do chkdsk that I learned from one of the forum, and then it somehow has fixed the RAW drive back to FAT32. However I still cannot see any of my files. I opened command prompt, and typed in dir /a and it said 0 files 0 bytes, 4 DIR 288,714, 293, 248 bytes free. How can I bring my files back?? I don't want to lose my files.

Should my computer ever crash, all my backup files will state to have just been created on that certain date. Me, being the organize-freak I am, have been looking for a solution so my backed up files can have the same time stamps as on my computer right now. I've done a little searching, and have found that people always recommend Robocopy. Problem is, I can't understand a word of the tutorials. How to run Robocopy to carry out what I want? And also just for the heck of it, is Robocopy the only solution? Is there some sort of back up program on Windows 7 that can do that?

I had set some of rarely-used system folders in my user folder (such as "Desktop," "Searches" etc.) as hidden, and selected "Do not show hidden folders, etc." in Folder Options. These hidden folders are not shown in Windows explorer's window, but they show up on the taskbar's toolbar. Is there a way to keep them hidden on the taskbar as well?

(it's to fix an issue with the game Dead Space 2) Anyway, I opened My Computer, then C drive, then Users. In here, I right clicked on empty space and opened properties. I checked 'Hidden' and apply. Said it needed administrator rights, I accepted. Then most desktop items disappeared, most files from my documents disappeared and after reboot, The ATI catalyst control centre is popping up an error message saying 'failed to start'.I realised I chose to hide all the files within that folder instead of showing hidden files/folders..I went to folder options and chose Show Hidden file and I can see them again but they have that see through look to them. ATI catalyst still won't start on reboot. Dell put in a new hard drive (like it was from the factory) and I am going to put the 'old' hard drive in the machine as a second drive and hopefully get some word documents etc. from the drive. I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have backed up all the files and emails from a faulty hard drive before inserting a new one and setting up Windows on it. However, because the drive was in such a bad way, I did't run Outlook to extract the email account settings - and now realise that these are hidden in the registry. I have tried importing the registry files (after doing some research on this), but cannot find the registry section which contains it.
Now that the the new drive is fully running (apart from the email account settings) - Windows Vista upgraded to Windows 7 - would it be too risky to re-insert the drive in the laptop to run Outlook and get the settings recorded ? I am concerned that it will cause error messages when I re-insert the brand new drive. I have thought about booting up a computer from the faulty drive, but think it may refuse to load because it's a different PC to one it came out of (Dell XPS M1530) - is this the case ?

From Options - Display, I chose show hidden text and it was "Top of Form" at the top of the page. But I got curious about this and made some search and I realized that you can hide text in a txt file with a stream method and also there can be hidden streams in processes also.How can I find out if a doc(x) file has no streams in it. I mean the hidden text may be seen by the method of Options - Display; but can someone hide something with a password in a doc(x) file? If yes, how can I find this out?

The drive itself is a Western Digital. It was working fine as of last week (which is when I last noticed; it could have been working until a later date) and I don't recall any additions/subtractions/changes to my system.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?
