Hard Drive Failure While Making USB Bootable Windows 7 - DRMK Error

Aug 28, 2012

My system is Dell Inspiron 17R SE (7720), 1 TB Hard Disk 5400 rpm + 32 GB mSATA, 8 GB RAM, 3rd Gen i7. I was trying to make a bootable USB flash drive for windows 7 from Windows 7 Home Premium Reinstall disk that came with my Dell laptop, using the WinToFlash utility. But in starting the process, the PC froze, all applications (even explorer.exe) stopped, and Alt+Ctrl+Del refused to work. I turned the laptop off and back on, where it refused to even show the OS list and showed a DRMK message instead with a command prompt C:> as:

Loading DRMK V8.00...
DRMK Version 8.00
COMMAND.COM Build 37 - Jul 28, 2008
DRMK KERNEL Build 15 - Aug 8, 2008
Copyright (c) 2006-2008 Dell Inc. All rights reserved.
C:>

I tried booting from Windows 7 reinstall DVD but none of the repair options worked. I tried reinstall and repair options but my Hard Drive did not show up. It rather asked to Load Drivers for the Hard Disk. However, it did show any of the USB drives I connected to it, along with an X: drive, which must be the recovery drive for Dell's factory restore. I tried looking for Hard Disk drivers in that but no luck.

Then I downloaded from another PC a USB utility for Seagate Hard Drives from Dell website that makes a bootable USB. I ran that utility and it showed all the test passed (But there was no firmware update during the tests). Another thing I tried was using list disk command on command prompt in Windows Repair, but It did not show any drives, not even the X: drive. It only showed the USB drives I attached to it, or the DVD drive in list volume command.

I cannot boot to windows, I cannot install new windows, I cannot repair the windows and I cannot even factory restore my laptop. The hard drive shows up in BIOS, but not in Windows Boot or Windows Installation. Is there any way I can get my Hard Disk back without losing data? I have two partitions of that drive. I don't care about formatting C: Drive (Windows) but I wanna preserve E: Drive (the one filled with personal data but no programs).

Making And Using A Bootable USB Key?

Making An .iso Into A Bootable Dvd?

Jan 6, 2013

I have to overwrite a windows 7 64 bit OEM with a windows 7 64 bit professional iso I got (yes I obtain it legally). I burned it onto a disc using a just a regular burning software that came with my computer(macbook pro), but you can't do that can you? You have to use a certain program that turns it into a bootable dvd, right? Am I correct or am I just taking nonsense.

Making All Hidden Files Unhidden?

Dec 3, 2011

I recently got a virus (I got it professionally removed) that caused all my personal files (pictures, music, etc) to become hidden. I went into folder options to make it show hidden files. I can now go individually to each picture file and make it unhidden, but I have thousands of pictures. I tried going to the folder and doing "select all" to select all the pics in that folder, but when I go to properties the hidden box is grayed out. Is there anyway to make all hidden files unhidden without going through them one by one?

Making A Windows 7 SSD Bootable?

Oct 5, 2009

I am trying to get Windows 7 up-and-running on my Toshiba M200 tablet with an SSD.

The problem is that I do not have an external DVD and these machines don't allow booting from USB.

I've managed to get a fresh install onto the drive by installing it onto a partition of the old disk based drive and then copying this over using Norton Ghost. Unfortunately I cannot get this to boot, which I assume is a problem with the MBR.

I have a second machine running Windows 7, and If I mount the SSD using a USB caddy it all seems healthy and is marked as an active partition. Is there any way to get this drive booting without being able to load up the repair functions on the DVD?

Making The MS Windows 7 Download Bootable?

Magic tells me the file is bootable ( and it will now open in the DVD tray) but the computer will not boot to it.I want to do a clean install, but feel as though I've hit the wall. For the time/money I've already spent I could have bought the full version at Walmart.

Windows 7 Not Working On New System - Making A Bootable Usb Harddrive

May 25, 2012

I recently upgraded my CPU, PSU, Motherboard and Ram. I kept my original dvd drive and hard drive. I have an issue when trying to start windows, it shows a blue screen for half a second and then restarts again. I have tried to use the repair tool but it doesn't work.

The person in this link had the same problem : [URL]

and someone mentioned that you have to do a clean install as my hard drive was so old and the motherboard is so new. What I am going to do is use an external hard drive I have and make it bootable so that I can place windows files on there as I do not have the windows disk.

My question is, once I have booted it from the external drive can I install the windows from the external hard drive onto my old hard drive so that I can unplug the external one after I have finished?

Copy Entire System From Backup Image Over Bootable Fresh Install?

Jul 15, 2012

I have a drive that was using PGP that has become damaged and will not boot despite trying 3 days of different fixes and repairs. I have a complete drive backup that will restore but when I try and boot after my PGP password I get 'Missing operating system'. Again I have tried decrypting and fixing but to no end.

I have another disk with a working and booting install of Windows 7 (same architecture etc) on. I have the entire contents of the non-booting system disk that I can access from the image of it.

If I booted into something like Windows Recovery or Live Linux environment, can I copy the entire contents of the non-working Windows 7 drive over the working one and expect it to work and then boot?

Hard Drive Is Making Odd Noise

May 23, 2011

. I have 2 of them, one is a Western Digital Caviar Blue, about 2 years old I think. The second is a Western Digital as well, but I'm unsure of the type and age, it's a 150GB drive. One of these drives are making an odd noise, I suspect it's the main drive, the 500GB Caviar Blue. Reason being is because after starting up my system and selecting either Windows 7 or Windows XP it does a Disk Check before going to the Welcome screen, it does not do the Disk Check every time, but it happens quite often. Disk Check of course displays no issues upon completing. The thing I notice that happens, but not very often, it's about a 1 second kind of low screech noise coming from my computer tower. It is making me worried of my computer health and how much longer is might live.

Extracting Hidden Files From Old Drive

Apr 30, 2012

I have backed up all the files and emails from a faulty hard drive before inserting a new one and setting up Windows on it. However, because the drive was in such a bad way, I did't run Outlook to extract the email account settings - and now realise that these are hidden in the registry. I have tried importing the registry files (after doing some research on this), but cannot find the registry section which contains it.

Now that the the new drive is fully running (apart from the email account settings) - Windows Vista upgraded to Windows 7 - would it be too risky to re-insert the drive in the laptop to run Outlook and get the settings recorded ? I am concerned that it will cause error messages when I re-insert the brand new drive. I have thought about booting up a computer from the faulty drive, but think it may refuse to load because it's a different PC to one it came out of (Dell XPS M1530) - is this the case ?

Adding 2nd Bootable Drive & OS To PC ?

Jul 9, 2010

I have a laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate as the bootable C: drive and wish to add a 2nd bootable drive using a caddy holding the 2nd HDD in a modular bay. If I wish to install Windows XP on the 2nd HDD it will presumably be configured as the D: drive and all the programs installed on it will adopt the assignation as being on D: Am I correct in assuming that if I swapped this drive into the main laptop drive bay most or none of the programs would work as their configuration would not be set up for a C: drive? I would prefer to get the 2nd bootable OS on the drive in the caddy as it will save constantly having to remove the C: drive and swap it with the 2nd drive. I am sure this is a fairly common issue, it's just that I have never set up this type of configuration before.

How To Make A Hard Drive Bootable

Dec 14, 2009

I had XP and Vista installed on my primary SATA hard drive (on SATA0 channel). There was no space for another operating system, so I added a secondary hard drive (to SATA2 channel) and installed Windows 7 to it. It worked perfectly. After a few weeks my old primary hard drive suddenly died, and the computer doesn't boot anymore. So I put the remaining live hard drive to SATA0 channel, and bought another new SATA drive and put it to SATA2 channel. Now I need to add boot files to my drive, because both operating system and data files are there, I just need to let the computer start.

So I have one good healthy SATA drive, Windows 7 installed on it, but without boot files, because that other (now dead) drive was used to start up the computer. I though that Windows 7 Installation DVD will help, but it doesn't. When I try to use its repair disk feature, it fails to find any installed Windows, so it says there's nothing to boot to, nothing to reapir. If I use the command line utility from the same DVD, I can see both my C: and D: partitions are there, with all files, I can see all my directories, I can see Windows folder, Program Files folder etc. But what does it need to boot?

I also tried "upgrade" from W7 Installation DVD, but it says that I should run this option from inside Windows. Since I cannot start the Windows, this option isn't for me. When I tried a new fresh installation, I got a warning that all my current data will be overwritten, and that also isn't option I am searching for.
