Files On HDD Without Laptop Working?
Jan 15, 2011My laptop has crashed on me and won't turn on. I desperately need a video from the Hard drive to upload tonight.. is there any way i can get the video from it ?

Feb 6, 2012Alright, so this is kind of complicated. I really hope someone can help me. This weekend, I was unable to login to Windows. When it got to the login page, I got no response from my keyboard or mouse. I tried 3 system restore points, none of which worked, so I had to go with a full system recovery which returned my computer to factory settings. I use Norton 360 so I had all of my files backed up to their online storage. When I went through the computer set-up, it set up a profile for me under the name jmdunn2. When I recovered my files from Norton, it said that it restored them to the original location, but that location was now under the C:/Users/owner tab. I want to just be able to move these files into the C:/Users/jmdunn2 tab, but when I right-click, I am not given the "Move to" or "Copy to" options. It seems like they're all locked into place somehow.

Sep 26, 2011I have searched and trauled the web and this website for answers and this site seems to have some pretty good responses so i thought i would post here. (I have also made a post on Shark007 fourms)
I run windows 7 ultimate 64bit on Intel quad core, 2gb ram with nvidia geforce 9600gt. Starting out with no idea what to do, after a some fiddling and searching i have now got both shark's codecs installed (normal and x64bit) and can run some MKVs through Windows media center using my 360 as an extender.
However, on about half of my MKV files i get the error message:
"The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct coded is not installed or the file is corrupt" when trying to play on the xbox360. These same files play fine on Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player on the PC however.
I have tried various settings and also divx and CCCP codecs packs with the same result, (although i had to change some stuff in regedit to get MKV to show up on the xbox using divx) If you need any more information feel free to ask. Edit: I have noticed using sharks analyze function that the MKV which play are: "Format settings, ReFrames : 4 frames" and the ones which do not work are "Format settings, ReFrames : 5 frames"
.TIFF Files With Program Not Working
Dec 20, 2012I've been trying to associate .TIFF files with a program called PaperPort Image Viewer on one of my company's engineering computers. When I try to use the "Open With" function or the associate file type in Default Programs, the program does not populate in the window. I go and search for the executable for the program, select it and try to bring it into the window for acceptabel programs for the file extension, and it doesn't populate to the window. However, if I map a drive to the users computer, and try and associate the same file type with that same program from my machine, it populates into the window with no problems, once I find it in the file structure. Both machines are running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. The engineering one is a Dell Precision 6700 and my machine is a Dell Latitude E4310 laptop.

Sep 1, 2011I am trying to use a certain wav file for my windows log off in windows 7 ultimate x64. The file is only about 7k and only about 0.5 second long. I have smaller shorter wavs that work, and larger longer wavs that also work. I know the sound file works, as I can open it in any media app and listen to it. For whatever reason I can not use it for any windows sounds. As far as I can tell it meets all the guidelines for use as a system sound.

Jun 6, 2012I recently changed the graphics card in my desktop, which caused a large crash that resulted in my computer absolutely refusing to boot, even when I install the old card. Anyway, I had 2 hard drives.. an 80GB boot drive with my OS and software, and a 250GB drive with all of my personal data (music, movies, documents, work files, etc) that is not not working. The 80GB drive works when hooked up to a USB, but the 250GB doesn't. I did put it in another computer to find out that all of my data is still there (I had to boot into a Windows 7 disc to access the drive), but it simply won't recognize when I hook it up to a USB. How can I get my files off the drive??? It's not a bootable drive.

The problem is when using a program (such as Freestar AMR MP3 Converter) I cannot select multiple files at once. This can make using the program extremely tedious and time-consuming if there are large numbers of files to convert. It is not just this one program that does it, because other programs also fail to allow me to select multiple files. Again, I must state that this only seems to happen when using certain programs and not generally in Windows 7. Also, a small unrelated question: how do I get out of 'Libraries' view in My Documents and basically disable the Libraries view permanently, and just have it normal like in all earlier versions of Windows?

For example, When I click Start, type "CC" in the search box, the Start menu displays what I intend to start (CCleaner) but when I press enter I get this:
Its acting completely wierd!
On top of that, when I right click the entry, I get a menu which is expanded towards the left awkwardly.
I also recall that I have unchecked "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties." in the properties of my Windows 7 boot drive.
And since the programs are installed there, I think the problem might be related.
I have checked it again but it dosen't have any effect!

Jun 11, 2011So I posted several weeks ago that my fan was about to go out in my HP DV7 laptop, and it finally stopped working completely. I have a small fan I a using to keep it cool. It appears to be doing the job for the most part. Depending on the time of day I get 32 degrees to a high of about 74 degree's in the hot part of the day.
My question is will this be alright, or is the internal fan being out and not pushing the air out going to be a problem? I will tell you one thing after calling HP and checking with local repair shops I won't be paying anyone to fix it and I am not sure if I can tackle this job myself or not. If I were to fix it myself don't I also have to put the heat sink (processor) stuff on there? (Not sure of the name of the stuff) And were do I get this stuff? So should I just wait and see if this small fan continues to work for me? Or jump in and try to fix it and create more problems! My fear is I will damage the mother board or something else trying to repair the $45.00 fan! Is it worth it? Or rock and roll with the $5.00 external Walmart fan Which could last days or years.
I am bummed as the laptop is only 1 1/2 years old. But I absolutely like all the options and design of my laptop!
BIOS Not Working - Windows Cannot Install Required Files (Error Code 0x80070017)
Dec 24, 2011I have Dell Inspiron N5010. I was using windows 7 home basic 32 bit os. I wanted to change it to windows 7 ultimate. So I have inserted windows 7 Installation disk into CD drive. Then I went to through the installation and I chose the Custom as the installation type.When the partition page appeared, I have formatted all the disks including C which contains windows files. Then I got 298 GB unallocated space. Then I split them in to 4 partitions. Then I have selected one partition to install the windows. Then installation started .
Copying windows files succeeded. Expanding Windows files(0%) is still be like that for 20 minutes. Then I got the error message like: "Windows cannot install required files. Error code 0x80070017". And I thought it would be the installation disk problem. But it works fine in other systems. I tried several disks. No use. Also I got another problem. When system boots I tried to enter into BIOS using F2 and F12 which was mentioned in screen. But it did not enter into the BIOS, Instead it goes to the installation.
Laptop And Desktop Working Together?
Feb 7, 2011I have a HP laptop and a custom built desktop both running Windows 7. I have both devices networked together and both share files through the Windows 7 Home Group or through my NAS. There are many times when I am on my laptop and want to switch over to my desktop or vice versa. My desktop has multiple displays which got me thinking about extended desktops. Is there any possible way to set up a connection between both computers so that a program or software that is installed on both computers could be dragged from the laptop screen over to my desktop screen?

Laptop DVD Drive Not Working
Nov 1, 2012I have a pioneer blueray writer drive installed in my Sony Vaio laptop. I'm on holiday and brought some DVD's with me to watch in the evenings. I have watched several since arriving but tonight when I tried to play one nothing happened. I checked in device manager and it reports that the drive is working properly but when I checked device region I found that it was set to region 1 instead of region 2. When I try to switch to region 2 I get the following error message;"Unable to update region setting. The drive reports that it requires media of the destination region (region 2) so please insert appropriate media and try again." When I insert a region 2 DVD into the drive and click okay it asks if I'm sure I want to change to region 2, I click OK and I get the same error message as above. I have tried uninstalling the drive and then rebooting the computer to force Windows 7 to reinstall it but it just comes up the same as it was. Any idea how to get this working again?
