i'm having a problem with my .exe files. if i click on .exe file, it doesn't work and hangs the computer or the software but works fine only in safe mode. whenever, i try to open skype, it never works.sometimes, when i use Internet video, it hangs the browser and then needs to be closed down from task manager.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAlright, so this is kind of complicated. I really hope someone can help me. This weekend, I was unable to login to Windows. When it got to the login page, I got no response from my keyboard or mouse. I tried 3 system restore points, none of which worked, so I had to go with a full system recovery which returned my computer to factory settings. I use Norton 360 so I had all of my files backed up to their online storage. When I went through the computer set-up, it set up a profile for me under the name jmdunn2. When I recovered my files from Norton, it said that it restored them to the original location, but that location was now under the C:/Users/owner tab. I want to just be able to move these files into the C:/Users/jmdunn2 tab, but when I right-click, I am not given the "Move to" or "Copy to" options. It seems like they're all locked into place somehow.

I run windows 7 ultimate 64bit on Intel quad core, 2gb ram with nvidia geforce 9600gt. Starting out with no idea what to do, after a some fiddling and searching i have now got both shark's codecs installed (normal and x64bit) and can run some MKVs through Windows media center using my 360 as an extender.
However, on about half of my MKV files i get the error message:
"The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct coded is not installed or the file is corrupt" when trying to play on the xbox360. These same files play fine on Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player on the PC however.
I have tried various settings and also divx and CCCP codecs packs with the same result, (although i had to change some stuff in regedit to get MKV to show up on the xbox using divx) If you need any more information feel free to ask. Edit: I have noticed using sharks analyze function that the MKV which play are: "Format settings, ReFrames : 4 frames" and the ones which do not work are "Format settings, ReFrames : 5 frames"
I've been trying to associate .TIFF files with a program called PaperPort Image Viewer on one of my company's engineering computers. When I try to use the "Open With" function or the associate file type in Default Programs, the program does not populate in the window. I go and search for the executable for the program, select it and try to bring it into the window for acceptabel programs for the file extension, and it doesn't populate to the window. However, if I map a drive to the users computer, and try and associate the same file type with that same program from my machine, it populates into the window with no problems, once I find it in the file structure. Both machines are running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. The engineering one is a Dell Precision 6700 and my machine is a Dell Latitude E4310 laptop.

I have smaller shorter wavs that work, and larger longer wavs that also work. I know the sound file works, as I can open it in any media app and listen to it. For whatever reason I can not use it for any windows sounds. As far as I can tell it meets all the guidelines for use as a system sound.

I opened up command prompt and ran SFC/ SCANNOW and received a message about corrupt files.
I recently changed the graphics card in my desktop, which caused a large crash that resulted in my computer absolutely refusing to boot, even when I install the old card. Anyway, I had 2 hard drives.. an 80GB boot drive with my OS and software, and a 250GB drive with all of my personal data (music, movies, documents, work files, etc) that is not not working. The 80GB drive works when hooked up to a USB, but the 250GB doesn't. I did put it in another computer to find out that all of my data is still there (I had to boot into a Windows 7 disc to access the drive), but it simply won't recognize when I hook it up to a USB. How can I get my files off the drive??? It's not a bootable drive.

The problem is when using a program (such as Freestar AMR MP3 Converter) I cannot select multiple files at once. This can make using the program extremely tedious and time-consuming if there are large numbers of files to convert. It is not just this one program that does it, because other programs also fail to allow me to select multiple files. Again, I must state that this only seems to happen when using certain programs and not generally in Windows 7. Also, a small unrelated question: how do I get out of 'Libraries' view in My Documents and basically disable the Libraries view permanently, and just have it normal like in all earlier versions of Windows?

For example, When I click Start, type "CC" in the search box, the Start menu displays what I intend to start (CCleaner) but when I press enter I get this:
Its acting completely wierd!
On top of that, when I right click the entry, I get a menu which is expanded towards the left awkwardly.
I also recall that I have unchecked "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties." in the properties of my Windows 7 boot drive.
And since the programs are installed there, I think the problem might be related.
I have checked it again but it dosen't have any effect!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Dell Inspiron N5010. I was using windows 7 home basic 32 bit os. I wanted to change it to windows 7 ultimate. So I have inserted windows 7 Installation disk into CD drive. Then I went to through the installation and I chose the Custom as the installation type.When the partition page appeared, I have formatted all the disks including C which contains windows files. Then I got 298 GB unallocated space. Then I split them in to 4 partitions. Then I have selected one partition to install the windows. Then installation started .
Copying windows files succeeded. Expanding Windows files(0%) is still be like that for 20 minutes. Then I got the error message like: "Windows cannot install required files. Error code 0x80070017". And I thought it would be the installation disk problem. But it works fine in other systems. I tried several disks. No use. Also I got another problem. When system boots I tried to enter into BIOS using F2 and F12 which was mentioned in screen. But it did not enter into the BIOS, Instead it goes to the installation.
My computers hard drive (herein referred to as driveA) filled up and I installed a second drive (herein referred to as driveB) to hold all my files. Simple. Next, I updated my windows from XP to 7 Home Premium 32bit. This is where I think the trouble begins. I installed Windows 7 on driveA and let it keep a Windows.old folder to keep all my old things. Install went swimmingly and I was happy as a clam. I could operate any file any time from any location no worries.I can't open well over half of my files. The vast majority being pictures. I am talking thousands. Every picture I have taken from 2007-2010 and every picture saved from the internet along with music and videos. I have tried going through folders and individual files properties and changing permissions. I am the only user and I am the administrator but I have checked every box Allow just the same. I still cannot access my files. I don't know when this happened, or why, or how. I just know that I would sure love to have all of my wedding photos, family albums, etc. I have also tried using the registry "take ownership" tweak and the same results. Nothing changes. I have changed them all, restarted, and they still will not open. Can't see a thumbnail and no program can open it. The permissions stay saved as 'allow - all'

DVD Tray opens and light comes on but does not play DVD. 1st USB port on left side gets - USB Device Not Recognized.One under it works and one on the right side works.OS Windows7 Ultimate. It is running kind of screwy so I wanted to reinstall Windows7 but with the DVD not operating Can't do it. Seems like maybe something in the register got erased or corrupted. With gpedit.msc in Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Offline Files, I enabled "exclude files by caching", entering (in the appropriate field), *.nef; *.cr2 But the files with this extension are synchronized anyway.

Just recently, I noticed all of the IP Camera avi files seemed to have disappeared from my documents if I went directly to the folder... When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a system with 32gb DDR3-2400, a 256GB SSD and a couple of spinners. I have set up 4gb of the RAM to be used as another RAMdisk using the softperfect software. This problem has been going on for some time, but has been more of a problem since I started using the RAMdisk. Not because the RAMdisk itself isn't working well, because the stuff that is stored there keeps getting reset.I have pretty much identified that when updates are installed through windows update (either from Microsoft update or from my WSUS server), the following are reset to defaults
1. Pagefile is automatically managed and stored on the C: drive and is set to 32gb
2. The TEMP and TMP environment variables are reset to the C:users default location
3. The temporary Internet Files location is reset to the default C:users... location
There may be others that I have not discovered.I have manually set my swap file to 1024/2048 on the D: drive (a spinner), on the belief that it should rarely if ever be needed with a system equipped with 32GB of RAM. I'm certainly not inclined to waste 32GB of space on my SSD for an unused object.I have placed the TMP/TEMP files, cookies and Temporary Internet files on the RAMdisk to squeeze a little extra performance out of the system. (Yes, I know, I'm not really getting much benefit).Photoshop and a few other programs also use the RAMdisk as a scratch disk, and were the main reason I set it up in the first place.This is becoming a real pain when it gets reset as I have to manually change everything again. Anyone know a way to make windows leave settings at what I set them, instead of having it continually reset the values to what it wants? I'd prefer to have it my way. I know there will be proponents of "leave things as windows wants it".
Is there a way to make SFC use the Windows 7 DVD for files to be replaced instead of the files on the hard drive?

My file and storage system is set up like this:
C: Drive - 120 GB SSD This is my Win 7 64-Bit Ultimate Boot drive. It has my most important Microsoft programs on it. Out of the 111GB available, I've used 42GB, leaving me 69GB free space. I want to keep this area open.
My next drive is a 1TB WD Caviar Black segmented into 3 partitions.
E: Drive = Program FIles This has the majority and rest of my programs. It also includes USERs Files. I've use 96GB out of 150GB. Out of that 96GB, 64GB are in USERS files.
F: Drive = Data Files. This stores all of my data except for media. I've used 91GB out of 350. I want to leave this be.
G:| Drive = Medsia FIles This stores all Media = Vids, Music, Graphics, Pictures. I've used 80 GB out of 500GB
I also have a 64GB ~ 55GB actual storage SSD drive that is partitioned but has no data on it or assigned drive letter.
Here is what I want to accomplish. i want to move my actual Program FIles to the 64GB SSD, assign it a drive letter, and keep the USERS files where they now reside on the F: dirve
My main concern is that in moving all these files around and splitting the USERS files from the Program Files that I'll mees up my Registry. Will someone please suggest some links I might read that will best help me acheive these moves.
