I have a couple of desktops and laptops connected on a wired network. I have no problems accessing and copying files. This isn't about access denied or other machines not being visible. My issue is that one of my laptops can be accessed and I can move through all shared folders but sometimes when I try to copy a file from this machine the copy dialog opens but no data is being copied. The transfer rate stays at 0kb/s. Rebooting this machine helps partially, but file transfers will start at well below 1Mb/s and very slowly rise some during the copy. I don't have this issue with any other machine. In fact, I have never seen an issue like this. Most people have problems with read/write permissions, again, that's not my problem. Data just won't move when copying sometimes. All machines are running Windows 7 ultimate and avast 5. The laptop with this issue is a Toshiba e205, core i5, 4gigs ram, atheros ar8152 ethernet. Should also mention that I don't have a problem with other traffic on this connection such as internet or like I said accessing shared files in explorer. They just won't copy.
View 3 Replies View RelatedDue to a NTFS hickup, a folder (1,3TB) ended wrongly up inside the system volume information (win7) folder. Wanted to move it back to it's root, but to no avail...
Tried take ownership, cacls, safe mode, tools etc.
Need to to really move it, because the 2TB disc had no room to do a copy. It's really a FAT/NTFS table issue.
I installed new folders, then decided I wanted to move them to become subfolders of another folder. Drag & drop (left-click) moved the folders to become subfolders, but left the folder icons in the old location as well. When I try to delete them, I get an error message saying the folder doesn't exist at that location. OK, it shouldn't, but why can't I/how do I delete the (old) folder icons?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI had to do a system restore to a prior point (two days ago) to fix a problem on a windows 7 dell PC. It worked but it moved all of my files and user profile to my C drive. I no longer see my user account when I go to start computer. I did find my files (at least some of them) under the c drive in C/OS/Users. Is there a way to automatically get them all back where they orginally were rather than attempt to manually move them and hope I'm placing them in the correct area? I also seem to have lost all of my bookmarks and cannot recover them on Firefox - is there any way to get them back?

When he came back EVERY file was moved to his desktop. I'm not talking about a few dozen files, or just doc. files. But files connected to programs, sample pics, txt. everything. Hundreds or even thousands of files have been moved onto the desktop, being layered on top. When we move a file to a temporary folder that has been created, others appear.
It sounds like every file had its address changed to be on the desktop. (ie C:UsersNameDesktop).
We are trying to get virus protection up (Norton is on the computer) but obviously the computer is only half working right now.
I was uninstalling windows live essential on my profile and added ms office outlook 2007 for email. For some reason, when changing users to my wife's profile, the desktop has to be prepared each time - as a temporary profile. The folder location has moved from Users/wife to Users/Users/wife and has a lock icon on it. I have tried moving the entire folder as administrator and received a not responding message.Short of a restore in which I will lose data is there a way to 'import' her profile under a new user and then delete the corrupted profile?

However, I found I could search for them on the home button and still find them, so I moved them back to their normal places and powered off. The next time I powered on, some of the icons had disappeared again, and a few files I had moved had broken shortcuts (when you click on it, it says this shortcut has been move or changed, would like to delete?). I can still search for the files and the documents they contain, but cannot access them. I have tried a system restore, but it as I figured it would did nothing.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a "server" (actually just another workstation with a big disk) running Vista. I access files on it over the network from my notebook running Windows 7. I have a directory on the server where I can see, open and edit all but one file - that one file seems invisible from the notebook. The permissions of the files in this directory seem identical. If I make a copy of the invisible file on the server, the copy is visible, but the original is not. If I rename the original file to something else, then rename the copy to the name of the original, then the file that's invisible is the one with the original name, not the original file. This suggests that its the name that's the problem, not some other property of the file. If I try to rename the copy that I can see to the original name using the notebook, I get a message: "This operation can only be performed when you are connected to the network". This is very odd, because I am connected to the network (evidence the fact that when I create a copy on the sever, it's visible from the notebook). If I make sure that I'm not trying to rename the file to a name that already exists on the server (even though I can't see it from the notebook) it makes no difference - I still get the error message.
By the way, the troublesome file is named OrganGEMA.h.svn-base - I have files elsewhere on the server that are called the exact same thing and they don't cause this problem - it's just this one file in this one directory.
I have checked the following settings and verified that:
- Show all folders = checked
- Show hidden system files/folders = checked
- Hide protected Operating System files = unchecked
I have also rebooted and tried Safe Mode - same results.

Simply altering the folder's permissions doesn't work. If I change permissions so that the folder in question does not inherit any permissions from parent folders, and instead allow my user read-only access to the folder...access denied.
Alright then, I tried to share the folder with my user. Although sharing usually means sharing with other computers on a network, it also applies to other users on the same machine. But the user can't access the shared folder...access denied.
I could move the folder in question to the Public user, but then everyone can see it. Holy cow...what does it take to share a folder with another user on the same computer?

The bar I am talking about shows up at the bottom of the screen and it shows the name of the program file in bold letters and at the right end of the bar you have three options: "RUN" "SAVE" or ("save as)" "CANCEL" Or and "X" at the edge of the bar.

The folders are on the same hard drive/partition so there does not seem to be any reason it should start doing this. I dont know what I could have changed on the computer to cause this to happen either. it is quite a frustrating problem however because large files take a while to transfer when they should be moved instantly.

The problem that I am having is this:When i open up the shared c: drive on a windows xp computer, and open a folder to view files, it only shows 122 out of the 227 files.when i open up the c: drive on the windwos 7 machine, i can see all 227 files.when i open up excel or word, and open a file that is stored on the windows 7 machine, it will open fine, but when i try and browse for the file that is stored on the windows 7 machine, it does not show it.now here is the interesting thing:when i open up the shared c: drive on another computer running windows 7, (not the server) i can see all 227 files and have no problems.i have multiple folders, ex: mypics2008, mypics2009, mypics2010, mypics2001, mydocs2000, mydocs2010, all shared off of the c: drive on the windows 7 server. this problem started a few weeks ago, i was able to see all the files in every shared folder off of the windows 7 server through all of the windows xp pr machines a month ago, and all of a sudden in the past few weeks, i am no longer able to see all of the files shared off of the server.i have rebuilt the index on the windows 7 server i have removed and redone ALL security, and sharing settings i have checked, rechecked and checked again all the file sharing settings I am stumped, and i consider myself knowledgable with computers.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI explain how frustrating this has been...Ok, so just a very brief back story, my job has a shared Toshiba file, where all scanned documents, and received faxes can be viewed as PDFs. Everything was fine until my computer (Windows XP) crashed, and I rebooted it with Windows 7. Everything else has been fine, but resetting up this file has been a nightmare. After about 15 calls, someone was finally able to create a folder that worked yesterday, however today it is back to the drawing board. , the folder that was set up was NOT the same one that my co-workers use, which is fine as long as I can access the data, but for whatever reason it is not working...I don't know if it has to do with the network path, the file name, or what.
Now, I am definitely hooked up to the network, and I definitely have network discovery on. Password protect is not on so that anyone can view the shared documents. If it makes any difference, the printer/copier/fax machine/scanner is a Toshiba E-Studio202L machine. When I click homegroup/sharing options, everything is checked off...I really do not know what the problem is, as the documents are just not getting forwarded to my folder (or any folder).
How do i stop my personal folder from being shared? I am not part of a homegroup.Under the advanced tab, sharing is not ticked and the 'share with' is set to nobody.

Password protected sharing is enabled on both. I shared a folder on computer 1, and added Everyone to the security tab, with full control.
When i try to map the folder from computer 2, I can see computer 1 listed. But when I click on the + next to it, it asks for a username and password (which I did not expect to be necessary since they are both the same user account and password) and when I enter it it says Logon Unsuccessful.
I have just created a VHD on my laptop so I can share is as a shared area as I have over 5 computers in my house. I want the whole household to have access to the drive but not to a folder that i own as it contains private stuff. How would I go about protecting a folder from being accessed without the correct password and username. Or maybe, how would i go about stopping the folder from being accessed from the whole network but being able to access it on the local machine?

Both the new and old drives were permanently assigned drive letter H and the new drive fitted in seamlessly about a week ago. The old drive is not used My Synctoy backups (run via Task Scheduler) all worked fine daily from 28th July until today when H was not found.I checked the properties and sharing was unchecked (not by any human hand!)The drive is permanently attached via USB.

When I try to open the search result in any media player, it says the file could not be found.I already restarted my system, but both search engines still say the file exists. Is the file still there? I cannot find it with Undelete Plus, but it did find a lot of files that were recently deleted.
