Fails To Work After Booting Up?
Apr 4, 2012
Windows 7 32bit on Dell 9200 4 GB RAM 2 x 500GB HDD ... with all OS updates.Been working fine.today left PC running, returned to it, power but screen was 'black'Power off to reboot - on start up (normal) desktop paints in, the spinning wheel runs for ages, then eventually all seems fine but can't do anything, only action is cursor .. nothing clickable. (incl Ctl+alt+del) HDD led on PC running permanently.Reboot in safe mode ... chose system restore .. and it shows a Windows Critical update restore point .. at a time that matches failure.?OK tried restore ... still the same.Tried Windows 7 repair disk, again selected restore ... Tried restore to next previous (2 days ago) all seems to go well, get login, desktop paints in ... then screen goes black ... all that is on it is cursor.
The only other points I can think of is that this morning (last successful boot up) it brought up a pop-up "Express files updated" with recommendation to run it ... as it gave no program, or manufacturer ... I chose not to run.On one of the boot ups during problem .an unfamiliar icon showed on desktop. "Homegroup", a green sphere, surrounded by 3 orbiting blue spheres" although not been there on any subsequent boot up.

My Win7 HP x64 PC has two hard drives, each partitioned into two volumes:
My C: and E: drives are each half of a 200GB drive, both NTFS.
My D: and F: drives are each half of a newer, 1TB drive, both NTFS.
My F: drive has around 400GB of 'stuff' that I want to preserve.
I've been trying to migrate the win7 installation from C: to the first partition of the 1TB drive with two different tools (Norton Ghost and the built-in Windows backup utility) and both fail identically. The backup procedure itself appears to work in both cases.Restoring the backup to the first partition of the 1TB drive "works" in so much as I don't get any errors either way.Creating the requisite boot structures also work, as the O/S appears to be bootable. However, when the restored O/S makes it to the login screen, two flaws are evident:
1. The keyboard absolutely does not work.
2. If I log in on an account that doesn't need a keyboard (no password), I see "Loading desktop", then a few seconds "Logging out" and I'm back at the login screen.
If I look at the event viewer logs (booting up with the O/S on the smaller drive), I see numerous events like this:"The AVGIDSAgent service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.""The Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."

While recently using Nero 10's suite of programs I encountered a screen indicating several programs had newer versions and that I should update before continuing. I then updated the programs. The update process required a system reboot to complete the update, since part of the update process could not be completed while the system was running. After clicking on the "Reboot Now Button" the system went through a normal shutdown and start up process. However, after displaying the Windows 7 screen the system hung and I never saw the Windows 7 Logon screen. At this point I powered down and restarted the computer.
The computer displayed the "Windows did not shutdown properly last time" screen during the loading process. I then selected to finish booting in SAFE Mode. The computer then booted successfully and I was able to exercise the system. I then attempted to restart the computer from SAFE MODE but again encountered the "hanging" condition. I again attempted to reboot and once again received the "Windows did not shutdown properly last time" screen. Since booting into SAFE MODE hadn't solved the problem, I attempted to boot into SAFE MODE with networking. This caused the system to again "hang". In summary, I am able to boot into all but the SAFE MODE with networking capability, which reproduces the problem.Since SAFE MODE failed to resolve the issue, I attempted to boot from a Windows 7 Installation DVD. After successfully loading from I selected the "Repair your Computer" option, which then located the Windows 7 system and attempted to repair the error.
After completing the system repair, I again attempted to restart the system, thinking the repair had been successful. However, the computer again "hung" without displaying the Windows Logon screen.I then used an external USB drive containing Fedora 15 to successfully boot the computer. This has allowed me to "poke" around on the hard drive containing the Windows 7 system. I've examined the failing drives partition tables to see if during the updating process the drive had become corrupted. Upon examination of the drive's partition table, I could not find any apparent errors. The following screen shot shows the partition contents of the Windows 7 drive:[CODE]

I have 3 drives, C:, D:, and E:. E: is just a storage drive. XP was originally installed on the D: drive. I installed Windows 7 on the C: drive following the instructions at Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP. After installing Windows 7, I didn't get an option to boot XP so I used EasyBCD to add an XP entry to the boot menu. That worked, but after I boot into XP, if I shutdown or restart I get an error message about the Windows Boot Manager that says
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem
...
etc
...
File: ootcd
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data."
Then I have to run startup repair from the Windows 7 disk. But then I just get stuck with Windows 7 and no boot menu entry for XP. If I try EasyBCD again, the same process results.

I have an Asus Z68 mainboard with UEFI-BIOS. Windows 7 Professional 64bit is installed in UEFI mode on a GPT partitioned drive (SSD). It worked flawlessly. Now I added my second, old harddrive, that is still MBR formatted.Windows won't start anymore, instead I am seeing "Windows is loading files", then a blinking cursor, and that's all.I have two options in BIOS regarding boot priority:
1) I can boot from the SSD as primary priority
2) I can select an option called "Windows Boot loader", I think this refers to the UEFI boot code that Windows wrote to the UEFI.
If I select the first option, I get the "Windows is loading files screen" and then the "Windows has detected a startup error, do you want to repair the system startup" screen. If I select "Start Windows normally", I get a blinking cursor and then nothing. If I select "Repair startup", I see "Windows is loading files", and then again the "Startup repair screen". It is an endless loop.If I select the second option, I get "Windows is loading files", then a blinking cursor, and nothing more.Is there any way to get my Windows to boot again without disconnecting or re-partitioning the old harddrive? Note that the old harddrive is NOT for booting, as it is just a datastore.

Whenever I connect to my wireless internet, be it when booting up the computer or changing to it via the modem cables, it refuses to work. The only way it works is if I click on the network computer in the bottom right corner and then troubleshoot for a couple mins, until the computer automatically fixes the problem. Im guessing a service or something isn't working.Ive tried buying new modem to wireless modem cables but still no luck. Obviously using Windows 7 (Ultimate)

really have never seen anything quite like this. When I boot up my PC and it gets to the desktop, a program window pops up and the mouse and keyboard will not work. Therefore, I cannot clear the program from the desktop or go anywhere to run scans or the like to see if the problem is virus related. When I go into safe mode, it does the same thing. I tried restoring to last known configuration with no System Restore shows no restore points. I can't do anything including get you information on my PC. I am running Windows 7 32 bit on a HP/Compaq DC 7600 C/PD 950. I am running Avast Anti-Virus Suite Pro. Regardless once on the desktop, I can not go anywhere. What the heck? Right now I am working on my laptop.

Firstly I should say that I am primarily a mac user, and it is not my laptop I am posting about. Although I am reasonably knowledgable about Windows, I haven't used it since XP, about four years ago, and so am pretty rusty.Basically, my girlfriends computer randomly turned off about a week ago, she assumed it was a dead battery, plugged it in, and then when it turned back on it wouldn't boot displaying error message: missing operating system. As it is a Dell laptop it didn't come with any installation discs, and I totally forgot to even make a repair disc when we got the laptop. I managed to get hold of a Windows 7 Installation Disc and license key for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit through my university. I think the laptop was previously running Windows 7 Home Premium, but that's all I know, and I'm not entirely sure of that fact.
Anyway, burnt the .iso to disc and have tried to boot several times from DVD Drive. The laptop loads the files from the DVD fine, and gets as far as the "Starting Windows" screen, where it seems to get stuck for a few minutes, until it becomes a black screen with just a cursor (the cursor still moves). This also happens with an 64 bit repair DVD I also managed to get hold of.

Clean installing Windows 7 x86 is no problem. But
1) upgrading Vista x86 to Windows 7 x86 fails and automatically rolls back to Vista, and
2) attempt to clean install Windows 7 x64 results in BSOD when rebooting to finalize the process.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I recently built the computer that I am on and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Everything's been working great and no updates have had issues installing until SP1 came out today. It fails every time with error code 80004005, unknown error. I am fairly certain that it is due to the Windows Mail hack. Unfortunately, I've already tried running the System Update Readiness Tool as well. As for trying the service pack install again, I have tried it multiple times, both through Windows Update and the full installation package downloaded from microsoft.com.

my laptop recently just started to fail with failure in the video card (l4d2 vertical bar crash and same iwth Internet)and now i'm trying to recover by using hp recovery discs, but it's not working!!!it installs and then when it says "customizing software" it just freezes and hard-resets itself.then when i turn it back on, it says "setup is preparing computer for first use" then the welcome screen then an error message/sound -> "windows could not complete the installation. to install windows on this computer, restart the installation"and then it shuts down and restarts itself. is it possibly a hardware error? before the recovery i had video issues with computer constantly failing to load 3d games or even Internet at times.

I have an intermittent problem with my Windows 7 programme installed on my laptop.
Very occasionally when I boot it will fail to launch stating that certain files cannot be found. I didn't record exact message but it is a system 32 file error.
I am able to reboot as the start launch is there, although it resembles the old 98 start launch, and it starts up again without issue.
I know it is vague but has anyone else experienced this? It affects me say 1 out of every 25 boots.

I recently acquired a used computer and put the hard drive from my old one into the new one and it would freeze and at the Windows boot logo and then BSOD. The previous owner suggested that I get a new hard drive as the motherboard is having issues reading an already formatted hard drive. I decided to recover the bootloader by following these steps: [code] You will need to replace C:\ in the example below with the letter for your boot drive! It's most likely C:, but it could be something else!attrib -h -s C:\boot\BCD..Now it takes me to the Windows Boot Manager and says that winload.exe (0xc0000428) Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file.

Basically, my computer fails so start-up sometimes (My motherboard produces a long beeep sound. GPU not running at all, but the rest of the components seems to be running - eg. USB, Ethernet etc). Also, it will sometimes freeze while running some basic programs which are not really RAM or GPU demanding such as web browsers. Finally, BSOD whenever I'm running some graphically intensive games (which theoretically, my computer should be able to handle.I've ran memtest86 for each of my ram and there were no signs of any ram defunct. Therefore, I'm speculating that the problem is either the GPU, CPU or the Motherboard itself. However, I'm not sure which one should I change. I've attached my 3 dump files, all of which seems to point to different sources of error.[CODE]
