Missing Operating System - Booting From Installation Disc Doesn't Work?
May 6, 2012
Firstly I should say that I am primarily a mac user, and it is not my laptop I am posting about. Although I am reasonably knowledgable about Windows, I haven't used it since XP, about four years ago, and so am pretty rusty.Basically, my girlfriends computer randomly turned off about a week ago, she assumed it was a dead battery, plugged it in, and then when it turned back on it wouldn't boot displaying error message: missing operating system. As it is a Dell laptop it didn't come with any installation discs, and I totally forgot to even make a repair disc when we got the laptop. I managed to get hold of a Windows 7 Installation Disc and license key for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit through my university. I think the laptop was previously running Windows 7 Home Premium, but that's all I know, and I'm not entirely sure of that fact.
Anyway, burnt the .iso to disc and have tried to boot several times from DVD Drive. The laptop loads the files from the DVD fine, and gets as far as the "Starting Windows" screen, where it seems to get stuck for a few minutes, until it becomes a black screen with just a cursor (the cursor still moves). This also happens with an 64 bit repair DVD I also managed to get hold of.

I was trying to completely restore my system using factory discs. I upgraded my ProBook 4525s from 32 to 64 bit. because of all the problems I've been having, I tried putting on the 32 bit version again... well somehow I'm miss a whole lot of stuff. I'm not super computer savy, but figured that i've bdone it in the past, I can do it again. Well the first thing I noticed is that my wireless isn't working. So I go to HP website and try and download some different drivers. Nothing is working and when I try to open and install anything downloaded it doesn't work properly. Went to update my bios and it needs F.0A which I can't download because I don't have a burning software that is compatible. Why I need to burn something to disc when I want to download it directly I don't understand..

I'm trying to restore my Windows 7 64bit machine to its factory settings at the moment, and I've tried the following but they've all failed.1.) Boot up and hit F8, select Repair computer, but then it just boots Windows normally.2.) Create System Repair Disc, and from BIOS boot-up, choose boot from DVD-RW, but when it does that and loads Windows files, Error 0xc000000d and winload.exe missing comes up.3.) When I tried to insert the installation disc that came with my computer, it's not recognized and nothing happens (during boot from DVD-RW).*Note - Just today when I tried to do a system restore, it said that I had no previous restore points, but I just restored a week ago, so that might add some info.

I'm an IT proffesional, currently going learning for my Configuring Windows 7.I used windows 7 since the first beta came out, and I must say, I never was dissapointed by it.But because I am learning I am trying to get all the computers here running windows 7, and I have a computer in my office wich I am trying to install it on.There are a few problems thoug:The computer only has a CDrom player, and cannot boot from a usb device. When I first got it, windows XP was installed, and it only had 750 mb of memory. Stupid as I was, I decided to give it a try anyway installing windows 7 from inside Windows XP using an external DVD player connected with USB.This failed, and gave me lots of error so I tried the next step.
As It cannot find a network share I had to instal windows PE on a CDrom and from there I could acces my extrernal HDD where I had a clean copy of windows 7 on as INSTALL.wim. I cleaned everything, and created everything from scratch with succes. Image X worked, and BCDboot worked. So it seemed to go great. After restarting my system, it still will only give me, Missing operating system.I tried to search on the internet but couldn't really find something related to my problem. In the bios it says I can start from IDE CD-rom device, Diskette drive, Hard-Disk Drive c:, Integrated NIC (Disabled)I bought some different memory and I am now at 1.5 mb DDRIt is an Intel Pentium 4 processor 2.4 Ghz Level Cachge 512 Integrated. It's a DELL Optiplex Gx260 Series.
The boot menu gives me:. Normal2. Hard-Disk Drive C: (Wich I used for my 100mb) (And I used D for my big partition and with BCDboot I used D:WindowsSystem32cdboot d:windows /s D: ) Wich worked because he did copy the files.

I was trying to recover/reinstall win 7 and bring back my asus laptop to its manufacture state. When I run the recovery media (recovery dvd) that comes with my asus laptop and after answering the prompts, it gives off "missing operating system" message on an entirely black screen. I tried to go to the bios setting by hitting delete key upon boot-up but it does not respond. I switched off and back on several times trying the delete key every time but to no avail. It's an ASUS N61J Series with intel i7.

my computer has Windows XP 32-bit, and i'm trying to do a clean install to Windows 7 64-bit. this is my processor. i'm assuming it can take the 64-bit version. i boot from the disc, press any key, and all the files load and whatnot. i see a screen that says "starting windows", and the logo appears. i figure that's a good sign. but...after that, i get stuck on a screen with nothing but some "desktop wallpaper" and my mouse. it just sits there. i can move my mouse around, but no installation options pop up. i bought the upgrade version of Windows 7, and i'm under the impression that you should be able to do a clean install using those discs. i stuck the 32-bit disc in my drive, and the install menu showed up no problem. but i want to install the 64-bit version.

I have 3 drives, C:, D:, and E:. E: is just a storage drive. XP was originally installed on the D: drive. I installed Windows 7 on the C: drive following the instructions at Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP. After installing Windows 7, I didn't get an option to boot XP so I used EasyBCD to add an XP entry to the boot menu. That worked, but after I boot into XP, if I shutdown or restart I get an error message about the Windows Boot Manager that says
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem
...
etc
...
File: ootcd
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data."
Then I have to run startup repair from the Windows 7 disk. But then I just get stuck with Windows 7 and no boot menu entry for XP. If I try EasyBCD again, the same process results.

I have an Asus Z68 mainboard with UEFI-BIOS. Windows 7 Professional 64bit is installed in UEFI mode on a GPT partitioned drive (SSD). It worked flawlessly. Now I added my second, old harddrive, that is still MBR formatted.Windows won't start anymore, instead I am seeing "Windows is loading files", then a blinking cursor, and that's all.I have two options in BIOS regarding boot priority:
1) I can boot from the SSD as primary priority
2) I can select an option called "Windows Boot loader", I think this refers to the UEFI boot code that Windows wrote to the UEFI.
If I select the first option, I get the "Windows is loading files screen" and then the "Windows has detected a startup error, do you want to repair the system startup" screen. If I select "Start Windows normally", I get a blinking cursor and then nothing. If I select "Repair startup", I see "Windows is loading files", and then again the "Startup repair screen". It is an endless loop.If I select the second option, I get "Windows is loading files", then a blinking cursor, and nothing more.Is there any way to get my Windows to boot again without disconnecting or re-partitioning the old harddrive? Note that the old harddrive is NOT for booting, as it is just a datastore.

Whenever I connect to my wireless internet, be it when booting up the computer or changing to it via the modem cables, it refuses to work. The only way it works is if I click on the network computer in the bottom right corner and then troubleshoot for a couple mins, until the computer automatically fixes the problem. Im guessing a service or something isn't working.Ive tried buying new modem to wireless modem cables but still no luck. Obviously using Windows 7 (Ultimate)

Have just registered to see if anyone has any ideas for a solution to a problem with my that is running Windows 7 (I think 64bit). It refuses to boot and just says "missing operating system".Using the repair option on a boot disc does not work (have tried 3 times)If I boot using a windows 7 cd/dvd I only get given the option to install windows.I can see both hard drives in the BIOS.I am able to get to a DOS prompt using the boot disc, but have no idea about DOS myself. When booting from the Windows 7 cd I was able to see the C: drive but it would not open, saying it needs formatting before use.I think that's about it, will post anything else relevant if I think of anything.

I have a msi-gx680 laptop , I used my Recovery DVDs (which I had created mine by MSI RECOVERY software on my laptop) to restore my C drive to manufacture settings. When I insert the first DVD, recovery process would start but it goes half of the way and finishes, showing (Successfully Recovery!) but it doesn't need the second or third DVD, and when I restart my laptop the phrase "Missing Operating System" would appear.

I just shipped my computer out of the UK. One of the HHDs my OS was RAID 0ed to broke. Obviously I got a missing operating system error from that. So then I deleted the RAID volume and changed my boot 1st priority to my DVD drive so i could reinstall Windows on the hdd that's still alive at least.

I am getting the "Missing Operating System" message on boot. Here is the strange thing...if I change the boot order in the BIOS and have CDROM first and choose not to boot off of it Windows 7 loads fine. If I put HARDDISK first then I get the missing operating system message. I have tried running CHKDSK, BOOTREC and the plain old Windows repair util. None of them have worked.

I've been using my new desktop for the last couple of months. Didn't have any problems until all of a sudden my computer just completely shut down and restarted while I was using it. And now it cannot boot, it just comes up with a 'Missing Operating System' message! I went into BIOS and it still detects my hard drive.
I booted from my Windows 7 CD and it looks like its going to load from my CD, and then it just stalls and comes up with the same message.. 'Missing Operating System'

I get the "operating system missing_" error on power up of my lenovo ideacenter that is 4 weeks old. I have recently installed the net from Time-Warner on cable.. I called lenovo and the tech gave me the "press F2 while turning the power on to it". This works but why do I need to do this? What gives with it working and then it doesn't .... I have not moved, touched, jostled it or anything to it that I didn't do when it was first installed. It works fine but will this indicate a future of trouble? I have virus protection from McAfee is this not enough?

I have an Acer Aspire One that was running Windows 8 consumer preview. I wiped the hard drive and tried installing Windows 7 starter from a USB drive then from an external DVD drive. I set the boot order for each install in the bios, but still get the Missing Operating System error. Do I have to change any other settings in the bios? Why won't Windows 7 install?

What I had initially: Quote: 120 GB hardisk divided into 3 partitions.1st partition (22.2GB) with XP, second partition (30GB) with win 7 and rest (60 GB) as mass memory for storage. What I did: Quote: Installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS desktop 32 bit with USB on the partition which had XPFor that I had to format it and convert to ext4 and also create a swap memory of ~3GB.Thus I finally have 1 partition with ubuntu another with win 7 and another with mass memory. Now, Problem:MBR got damaged as win XP partition was formatted (which had bootloader) and thus I can't login to win 7 from Ubuntu Grub.To solve this problem I had to create a USB recovery disk for Windows 7. But now the problem is even after using bootrec command which gave sucess result for fixmbr, fixboot, scanos and rebuildbcd i am not able to boot into win 7. The computer just hangs after bootup with a blinking cursor.

I have two hard drives, one is SATA 500gb and the other is IDE 150gb. I had Windows 7 on the SATA and an old Ubuntu on the IDE hard drive. I hardly ever used Ubuntu and got tired of GRUB coming up every time I booted asking which OS I want so I decided to uninstall it. I wanted to go ahead and reformat the drive so I used an old Windows XP cd I have to reformat the 150g IDE drive. It wouldn't let me just reformat without installing XP so I went ahead and did that.So now whenever I turn on the PC it automatically boots into Windows XP. In XP I can see both drives, my 500gb with all my files and Windows 7 and the 150gb with just XP on it. In my BIOS the SATA 500gb is set as the main hdd, and is set as #1 in the boot priority (IDE hdd is not anywhere in boot priority). When I bring up the boot list and choose the SATA HDD it just brings up a BIOS flasher, no Windows 7.

So the other day I wake up to log on to my Alienware M17x m1, which was running windows 7 ultimate x64 sp1. As it's booting up, I see the message operating system missing. So I grab my USB thumb drive (my cd/DVD drive does not work, thus I have to use windows 7 on USB). Tried to reinstall windows that way, but was getting some partition error of some sort. Now when I try to boot up with USB, I can't even get to the windows 7 installation screen. I get - The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry.

I built my computer a few months back, and it worked just fine. About three months ago, I got two 3TB and put them in RAID 0 along with my four SSDs (which were also in RAID 0). When I hooked up my hard drives, Windows stopped booting. It installs, but when it restarts to finish the installation it says "missing operating system." I tried reinstalling it in every way imaginable: With only one of the hard drives, no RAID, just one SSD, using the hard drive, using a USB dvd drive, etc.
the parts:
Cougar GX 1050W
Z77A-GD65
i7 3770K
GTX 680
32 GB RAM
4x 120GB SSDs in RAID 0
2x 3TB hard drives in RAID 0
