Missing Operating System - Booting From Installation Disc Doesn't Work?
May 6, 2012Firstly I should say that I am primarily a mac user, and it is not my laptop I am posting about. Although I am reasonably knowledgable about Windows, I haven't used it since XP, about four years ago, and so am pretty rusty.Basically, my girlfriends computer randomly turned off about a week ago, she assumed it was a dead battery, plugged it in, and then when it turned back on it wouldn't boot displaying error message: missing operating system.As it is a Dell laptop it didn't come with any installation discs, and I totally forgot to even make a repair disc when we got the laptop. I managed to get hold of a Windows 7 Installation Disc and license key for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit through my university. I think the laptop was previously running Windows 7 Home Premium, but that's all I know, and I'm not entirely sure of that fact.
Anyway, burnt the .iso to disc and have tried to boot several times from DVD Drive. The laptop loads the files from the DVD fine, and gets as far as the "Starting Windows" screen, where it seems to get stuck for a few minutes, until it becomes a black screen with just a cursor (the cursor still moves). This also happens with an 64 bit repair DVD I also managed to get hold of.

Jan 15, 2013I'm trying to do a clean install of windows 7 (by booting the computer into the CD) but no drives show up. This usually happens to me so no big deal. The problem is.. recently I got a "new" computer, made out of old parts of other computers. SO i have no drivers CD.. So i have no SATA drivers...I tried to download about 30 so far with no luck. Simply because I have no idea what I should download.I simply don't know if sata drivers come from the HDD i have, from the motherboard, from the chip of the motherboard.. i have no clue.Here's my computer info you may need:I've seen posts saying to in the bios change from whatever I have to IDE or to something else, but I have no clue what that does so i would rather avoid it if possible. If there's no other solution, what does it actually do if i change from SATA to something else? (if its even SATA what I have).

Jan 4, 2012Windows 7 doesn't recognize my WD HDD during installation?trouble shooting:This is what i did..... I took a laptop hdd and placed it into my desktop. I booted my desktop with the laptop hdd. I then placed the WD HDD ( the one that i've been having trouble with) as a second hard drive. I noticed that windows recognized the WD HDD and could write to it. I also reformatted the WD HDD. I then tried to run the windows installation from my laptop hdd so i could install it on my WD HDD and once again it didn't recognize it. I thought maybe i could clone my laptop HDD to my WD HDD with Acronis "clone software" and it couldn't recognize the WD HDD as well. This is frustrating...... Why can i write to the WD HDD but cant install the OS.

May 5, 2012I have an newer HP Netbook running Windows 7. I recently installed Open Office 3.3 on the machine, and it works fine, except for some key sequences. For example, in the OO Writer, the key sequence Ctrl-Home should move the cursor to the top of the doc. This works fine on my older HP XP Pro laptop, but my netbook ignores or doesn't understand it. I have removed OO and reinstalled it, but the problem still occurs. So, I guess I need to figure out if this is a Windows or Open Office issue.

It's Speedfan, so I can monitor temperatures. I put a shortcut to it in my Start Menu - Programs - Startup folder. If I click on that shortcut it starts the app. But the app never starts when I log in. It shows in the start menu in MSCONFIG and it is enabled.

Aug 15, 2012I just installed Windows 7 on my home computer. When I plug in my old speakers (Creative Intrigue 2.1s) whatever speaker is plugged into the right jack BARELY gets any sound. I did some research and it seems this is a semi common problem. I tried messing with all the balance levels and hooked up an old set of speakers which work fine. I also tried switching speakers and whichever is in the right audio jack barely works while the other works fine.The only other thing I was able to find was someone said they got a "new" cord and it fixed their problem. Is there a cord that would work with Windows Vista but wouldnt work with Windows 7?

Feb 11, 2013Just got this computer about two weeks ago. My old XP Pro finally crashed and burned. I miss that machine. Win 7 is crap as far as I am concerned. Problem - Windows Explorer absolutely does not work. I try to copy and paste between drives or even on the same drive. Program starts out great and gets down to near the end and reads 5 seconds remaining. That is the end of the copy and paste. Furthermore, it is an ordeal to shut the damn program off. Sometimes I even have to pull the plug on the machine (and yes I know that is not good). I thought for a bit that some throttling program was the culprit but I am getting nowhere.

Oct 1, 2010My mother asked me to fix her computer, his window XP is badly corrupted, so I tried to install Window 7 on her computer. However, the hard drive didn't show on the screen. I found it quite odd because BIOS detected it as IDE driver, and it's a SATA driver. I tried to install with old Window XP installation CD. Same thing, doesn't show on the window XP installation screen either.
I tried to hook hard drive on other computer, and was testing with Window 7 XD and see if it was working, and it did. It shown on the disk screen. My guess that it's probably the BIOS that occurred, or perhaps other things. I have one hard drive, nothing more.

Jan 27, 2012Client of mine has bought his notebook ASUS U31S with external DVD drive yesterday and he asked me to install windows 7 ultimate (origin was windows 7 home edition) beside other operating system Linux and Solaris.
I divided the 500 GB hard disk but didn't touch the hidden partition that has recovery.
I formatted the C partition that had windows 7 home edition and install a fresh copy of windows 7 ultimate,,,the process was smooth , first restart asking about username and computer name , password,,,etc ,,,,but with the second restart, PC kept rebooting without completing the windows installation.
Although I have used the same widnows 7 CD for his other new laptop and the installation went smooth without any problem.
I tried different media same problem. This laptop does have an external DVD driv, of course it is an LG and brand new

Nov 4, 2010I've got OEM version of W7 Pro 64 bit. I've had it about 2 months and everything is working fine except IE8 64 bit. I normally use Firefox so haven't been to concerned. I'm now trying to figure out why my IE8 64 bit dosn't work. The IE8 32 bit works fine. The error I get when I start IE8 64 is
"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."
I've downloaded IE8-WindowsVista-x64-ENU and tried installing that but get the error: "Internet Explorer 8 is not supported on this operating system". I've checked in control panel system and it reports my o/s is 64 bit.

Dual Booting XP And Windows 7 Doesn't Work After Using XP
Aug 11, 2010I have 3 drives, C:, D:, and E:. E: is just a storage drive. XP was originally installed on the D: drive. I installed Windows 7 on the C: drive following the instructions at Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP. After installing Windows 7, I didn't get an option to boot XP so I used EasyBCD to add an XP entry to the boot menu. That worked, but after I boot into XP, if I shutdown or restart I get an error message about the Windows Boot Manager that says
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem

Then I have to run startup repair from the Windows 7 disk. But then I just get stuck with Windows 7 and no boot menu entry for XP. If I try EasyBCD again, the same process results.
Windows 7 Doesn't Work With All Network Drives
Mar 22, 2011When I boot up my Windows 7 Professional x64 machine I get that balloon that states "Could not reconnect all network drives". How do I get rid of this? I am hard wired into the network (not wireless) and I cannot find a way around it.
All the solutions I have found state its either due to wireless network authentication occuring late in the boot process (but im hard wired) or that you need to upgrade to a Pro edition of windows (which I cam using).
It is not disasterous if I am being honest its just mildly irritating

Mar 9, 2012i have Windows 7 ultimate 64bit and XP Pro 32bit, and here is my issue: i have a huge network and i have to set my IPs
IPv4:
IP Adress 10.100.150.200
Subnet M: 255.255.128.0
Gateway: 10.100.20.1
DNS: 10.100.0.3
This settings work on all XP OS but doesnt work with all Windows 7. It works for 5-10 min then it says no connection. After set IP it works then doesnt work. If i ping 10.100.20.1 -t it pings as much as i want until i stop and if i restart ping it doesnt work, while first ping i can access to internet after stopping the ping no internet also, That win 7s works with normal ip configurations like: ip:192.168.0.10 gateway: 192.168.0.1
Does windows 7 have problem with different gateway problem? or is it a bug?

Aug 26, 2012alright so my laptop used to run windows 7, but had to reinstall operative system and only had a xp cd lying around, so i installed that. Problem is now that i need drivers to get the internet and usb ports working, but have no way of getting the files on the computer I tried to burn the files onto a cd, but when i insert it and open it, the cd shows as empty. Btw the cd was burned from another laptop with windows 7 if that is of any importance?
