Abcd.DS_STORE.txt In 'Settings->Security->Prohibited file types->File types to exclude from extracting', if I just type in 'thumbs.db .DS_Store' (without the quotes) in the field, will it work the way I described? Also, does anyone know if WinRAR has a syntax guide for the Prohibited file types list in case I'd like to add more filenames or be flexible with the rules I need? The reason for this question, is I'd like to not extract unnecessary files from ZIP, RAR or 7z archives in Windows 7 - files like Windows 2000/XP's Thumbs.db file (Thumbnail cache) and Mac OS X' .DS_Store file (Desktop Services Store), while not being too strict and also not extracting files which just contain 'Thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' in its filename.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I save files from programs (aka Word, Photoshop, anything)onto my Desktop, I cannot see them directly from the actual desktop. I can only see them when I open up Explorer, and click on the Desktop tab. Then all my files are visible. I thought they were hidden...but they apparently aren't.It possibly seems like a refresh error.I did find a way around this..I go to Control Panel >> Appearance and Personalization >> Under Folder Options >> Show Hidden Files and Folders. I click on Reset folders, Apply, and then OK, and my missing files pop up on my actual desktop. But from then on, any new files I save are only visible in Explorer again. I don't want to go to Control Panel everytime I have to save something to the desktop? I've run Norton and Microsoft Essentials and I have no viruses. What can I do?I just found out I can also see my files after pressing f5 (refresh)so I guess the problem is HOW do I get my computer to refresh the desktop automatically?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I download a PDF file to my Win 7 desktop (or create a new pdf document and save it to my desktop), the file is not visible. If I navigate to the desktop directory through windows explorer I can then see the file, but it is not visible on the desktop itself. So the file is there, but invisible. My default viewer is adobe reader. This "might" have started when I upgraded from Adobe Reader 9.4 to the new "X" version or may have been prior to that. In any case, I uninstalled "X" and went back to 9.4 and the problem still persists.

If I go to "view network computers and devices" on my laptop I see my desktop listed as MOM-PC but when I click on it to open it I get "Windows cannot access // MOM-PC. If I go to the start button and type in the IP address with \192.xxxxxx it shows me the document file and I am good to go.I don't want to have to remember the IP address so how can I get the Network share to work using the PC's name that is shows me is there and connected or how can I get that name to be the IP address if that is what will work?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIm downloading files to my desktop, but the only way i can access them is going to open containing folder option from the download box (firefox), which just takes me to the desktop folder. if i navigate to the desktop folder manually, they cant be found. nor do they come up in a search. this just started happening hours ago, so unless something out of my control made these files hidden all of the sudden, im not sure what is going on.i have downloaded different file types from different websites, so its not just a problem from one site or file type.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was attempting to backup my system to an external drive, interrupted it, then all the files I saved on my desktop were gone. I can't find them through the start menu search nor are they in the recycle bin. I tried to restore the system to an earlier save, no dice.
1. are the files gone?
2. what happened?
3. is it a bad idea to save files to the desktop? It looked like that is where windows places my documents by default? Is it dangerous to just create C://documents for a computer with one user?

In XP, opening the source folder and doing SELECT ALL would give the COPY, MOVE, DELETE options on the left hand of the folder. How best to do in Windows 7? Use the Copy to Clipboard, then Paste to the two other folders? If so, is the Clipboard big enough to handle the copying of up to 1.5 GB in files?

View 3 Replies View RelatedEverything was working fine until yesterday. This morning when I woke up, I realized that 3 folders were missing from my Desktop. The folders had all my articles I wrote for publication. There was nothing else in each one.I tried every possible way to find the files again but no luck. Basically the 3 folders are GONE(VANISHED)in the blue. I tried to search the files name but there is nothing on my computer. It is not that the folders are hidden because they are not as I have searched by folder names and file names but nothing comes up.I tried all sort of Recovery Tools but no luck, the problem is that none of them are detecting the files as deleted. So I am not sure how can I restore them if they are not found as deleted at first place. When I try to search for a file name like I had an article named "child problems.odt" I get results in my Explorer but they are not actual files but rather Type: Shortcut in the folder/Recent.There were about 60 articles and it took me more than 3 months to write. Can someone please help me here. I am disperate. I tried to do a disk scan for problems but no luck. I ran antivirus scan but no luck..I do not have limewire or any other p2ps. It is my work computer.
Here are the Specs

I seem to have no program files and almost all my desktop shortcuts have disappeared..Also my Desktop background is gone and its just a black screen.
I have tried Viprescue, malware bytes and Mcaffe but they havent changed anything..
I have this old pc with Windows 7 x32 with an nVidia FX550 256mb agp card. The mobo is an old Asus K8 SE Deluxe with 3gb of ram. Monitor is an LCD 16" Vertu KTC1562. I notice an issue wherein the files I place in the desktop say, the printed .pdf document(recovered from SBIE paid version --all browsers) cannot be seen unless I refresh the desktop. That is when I am using the internet and am downloading / printing in .pdf from the browser(FF and Google Chrome). When I am not connected it's okay I do not have that problem. This happens in the middle of my internet session. During a download/when I see a good article or check my email I print them in pdf and place it in the desktop first prior transferring to the respective folders in my drive.
I don't know what to do here. The problem is not only isolated to the desktop but also when I download/recover files from SBIE to the "downloads folder" the same thing happens. I do not see what I recover if I do not refresh that window. Same as the desktop. I can't see what I recovered if I will not refresh.I tried re-installing the driver for the agp card which is version 15.3(came with the box and is operating okay not in compatibility mode). It was still the same. The new "280.26 forceware_winvista_x86_international_whql" won't intall saying it isn't compatible with my agp. TriednVidia96.85_forceware_winvista_x86_international_whql it installed okay but the problem is the same so I rolled back the driver. This is only in Windows 7 x32 and not with XP(I dual-boot --bios booting separate drives per OS). My PDF is Foxit Phantom and the download app is FreeDownload Manager(freeware)
Windows 7 randomly renaming files on desktop?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI did a search on this and could not find anything. Once in awhile my desktop will have a bunch of random files I deleted a long time ago. I always empty it too. There won't be anything in the recycle bin or on the desktop and then I'll go to look at it after awhile and some other group of files will be there. I have tried the whole "rd /s /q C:$Recycle.bin" on every drive on my computer. Windows is installed on C:. It isn't even the same group of files each time, it is just random files I've deleted over the past 2 months. I noticed a folder for a demo install of InDesign comes up a lot and says it is in use when I try to re-delete it, could Adobe's crap software be breaking it?
Windows 7 64 Ultimate, 12 gigs of ram, I7 processor. Hard drives are at most half full.
I have 25 files and folders on my desktop but only 15 are visible when viewing the desktop directly. All of them are visible when viewing the desktop in Windows Explorer. I have two monitors configured as one and keep all desktop items on one of them. I've tried selecting everything with CTL-A while on the desktop and moving them around as a group, to see if the missing ones might have somehow scrolled off the screen, but that doesn't reveal them.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe other day I was browsing a website and Norton Internet Security pops up saying that a Trojan has been blocked (I don't have a screenshot of it, but that's pretty much all it said). So I exited the website and told Norton to do a full system scan later that night and fell asleep. When I woke up, all it found were some tracking cookies, which it deleted. However, I now had a problem on my computer: all files in every folder will auto arrange themselves every time the folder is opened or refreshed. The same happens on the desktop. Auto arrange is not checked.
Inside folders, the default setting is always "View > Details" and "Sort by > Name > Ascending." The icons on the desktop are still medium, but they are arranged in an odd order, it seems to be alphabetical but in an odd way. I had all my desktop icons arranged in a specific way, so now it's hard to try and find programs that I need. It's also extremely difficult to find any files because of this setup too. To clarify, here's an example of what happens: I arrange the icons the way I want (here being by "Date Modified"), but... If the folder is refreshed or reopened, computer is restarted, etc, then the folder resets to this default.
I have recently been using some .bat tools to speed up searches in root directories. The tools search for the files in a list.txt, and copy them to a new folder which appears on my desktop. It has been working, until I used a new version today. It copied the files correctly, but I could not see the new folder appear on the desktop. I searched for it and found it where it should be, C:UsersEvanDesktopWhy does this folder exist, but not appear visually on my desktop? is it an error in my.bat file or something else
