I went into it, can see everything fine, go through the program files, etc...Except I can't find my old documents, pictures, or anything that was saved on my desktop. A search won't even bring it up. Nov 25, 2009My desktop has recently been upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate from XP. I set up a home group at another location, then returned the desktop to my normal connection. The wireless card I used was a D-Link that is XP compatible only, and I found this out after attempting to install, then I checked on it later. I deleted the driver, and tried a Netgear WT111G USB wireless card. Install failed, and I went online to look for a compatible driver.
I downloaded a driver, installed it, and the wireless card was detected, but could not connect to the internet. Uninstalled the driver, and tried plugging into Ethernet, and cannot find my home connection. Can only get into network settings (home,work,public).
Has any one here heard about this problem after creating a homegroup? Trying to troubleshoot, but it's a specific problem I'm not familiar with as of yet.
The faulty drivers are no longer on the PC, but it's still unable to find a direct wired connection.

Jul 9, 2010i have Windows 7x64 Pro. The system is less than a year old and sparsely populated and clean.
This morning when I booted up, Windows opened and none of my desktop icons were present. The Start Menu works and I can get to my programs but how do I restore my desktop?

Dec 19, 2011I am running win 7 64bit and all of a sudden all my desktop icons disappeared along with my start menu and my right click function. Ctrl-alt-del brings up the option to access the task manger but it fails to display it. safe mode is fine and when I create a new admin account (admin account 2) all is well. is there a way to fix this problem as i have a year old system restore that I dont want to use. I was hoping to fix my admin account 1 as it has all my settings, programs etc. Can this be fixed and if not is there a way to copy all settings (looks, programs, firefox settings etc) to the admin account 2.

Sep 23, 2012All my desktop icons are missing, no start button or task bar.The only way I can access my computer is via safe mode.Two things happened this morning so I am not sure which one is the culprit. Firstly I had an update from Java.Then I shut my computer down and went to bed.During the night, my UPS board starting beeping. We were having power problems, I think a brown out.The power went out completely then all my other electronics like my tv, kettle, washing machine etc, starting working properly again.So I can't say whether it was the power problem that has caused this or the Java update. I have done a system restore which didn't help. I have done Windows+R and typed in 'explorer.exe"..which only gave me a black screen. I have run all antivirus programs and nothing is being picked up.

Oct 26, 2011When I save files from programs (aka Word, Photoshop, anything)onto my Desktop, I cannot see them directly from the actual desktop. I can only see them when I open up Explorer, and click on the Desktop tab. Then all my files are visible. I thought they were hidden...but they apparently aren't.It possibly seems like a refresh error.I did find a way around this..I go to Control Panel >> Appearance and Personalization >> Under Folder Options >> Show Hidden Files and Folders. I click on Reset folders, Apply, and then OK, and my missing files pop up on my actual desktop.But from then on, any new files I save are only visible in Explorer again. I don't want to go to Control Panel everytime I have to save something to the desktop? I've run Norton and Microsoft Essentials and I have no viruses. What can I do?I just found out I can also see my files after pressing f5 (refresh)so I guess the problem is HOW do I get my computer to refresh the desktop automatically?

Jun 30, 2011I recently updated Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9 on my notebook. Following the updates and restart I had no desktop icons appear. I seem to have resolved that issue, but now ALL of my miscrosoft documents, pictures, etc. that were in files are gone. The file folders apeear as usual, but they are now completely empty. Dec 24, 2011I have a Toshiba Satallite with Windows 7 installed. I now have no start button, windows task bar and all of my desktop icons have gone missing.
When I restart the laptop (via CTRL + ALT + DEL) I see all of the missing items listed for about 10 seconds...then they all disappear. What I have left is my personalised background image (my cute 2 month old nephew with my sunglasses) and a windows explorer window. Nothing else.
So far I have managed to access my Virus protection software (AVG) and run a scan. It didn't find anything. I ran my spyware application (Spybot Search and Destroy) again nothing.

Jan 29, 2011I cant be positive that this is solely a Windows 7 issue, considering that files can get lost all the time on any system but, just recently, a good majority of my jpeg picture files have randomly disappeared. There are a few folders that are still in the usual place (Pictures Folder). As for the missing folders, they would appear after I use the computer search, however, when I try to open them, I get a pop-up that states that the shortcut has been modified/moved and my only option is whether or not I want to delete it. I looked under Recent Docs and the missing files show up; the latest one thats been modified was earlier this month when it was still accessible. I've even tried a system restore (from before the modification dates) and the Unerasure program, which I found out the hard way is a total sham. Is there any way to recover these? I really don't want to lose a chunk of nostalgia

Nov 24, 2011I just accidentally changed my settings on my grapics card so that I can no longer see my desktop on the monitor connected to my HTPC. My HTPC has a monitor attached to it and it also has an HDMI out from the graphics card going to an LED TV in another room. I accidentally switched it so that the desktop can only be seen on the other TV in the other room.
All I can see on the monitor is the blank Windows 7 logo (no desktop icons) and I cannot navigate back to my AMD control page to undo this. I tried rebooting but this does not work. This is an issue as I don't have a bluetooth keyboard/mouse that I can use in the other room to control the desktop. How do I reset this? I am using a AMD HD 6750 graphics card.

Apr 7, 2011I have just reinstalled windows 7 pro on my PC, without formatting, because it wouldnt start up, but i needed to keep all the files on there. now i have it started up but i cant find my old user folders, although they must be here somewhere because of the 100gb or so showing up as full. how might i go about finding them? i have lots of work not to mention ALL my recent itunes purchases and hours worth of saved games. i assume they must be here somewhere but on windows i wouldnt know the 1st place to start looking.
