View 1 Repliesi have Windows 7x64 Pro. The system is less than a year old and sparsely populated and clean.
This morning when I booted up, Windows opened and none of my desktop icons were present. The Start Menu works and I can get to my programs but how do I restore my desktop?
I am running win 7 64bit and all of a sudden all my desktop icons disappeared along with my start menu and my right click function. Ctrl-alt-del brings up the option to access the task manger but it fails to display it. safe mode is fine and when I create a new admin account (admin account 2) all is well. is there a way to fix this problem as i have a year old system restore that I dont want to use. I was hoping to fix my admin account 1 as it has all my settings, programs etc. Can this be fixed and if not is there a way to copy all settings (looks, programs, firefox settings etc) to the admin account 2.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAll my desktop icons are missing, no start button or task bar.The only way I can access my computer is via safe mode. Two things happened this morning so I am not sure which one is the culprit. Firstly I had an update from Java. Then I shut my computer down and went to bed.During the night, my UPS board starting beeping. We were having power problems, I think a brown out.The power went out completely then all my other electronics like my tv, kettle, washing machine etc, starting working properly again. So I can't say whether it was the power problem that has caused this or the Java update. I have done a system restore which didn't help. I have done Windows+R and typed in 'explorer.exe"..which only gave me a black screen. I have run all antivirus programs and nothing is being picked up.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satallite with Windows 7 installed. I now have no start button, windows task bar and all of my desktop icons have gone missing.
When I restart the laptop (via CTRL + ALT + DEL) I see all of the missing items listed for about 10 seconds...then they all disappear. What I have left is my personalised background image (my cute 2 month old nephew with my sunglasses) and a windows explorer window. Nothing else.
So far I have managed to access my Virus protection software (AVG) and run a scan. It didn't find anything. I ran my spyware application (Spybot Search and Destroy) again nothing.
what I can do to get my laptop back to a usable state?

View 3 Replies View RelatedSome of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi am missing a folder (at least one that i know of since i've tried to access it today) in my drop down bookmarks. it's filled with many site addresses.i've even checked inside all my other folders to make sure it wasn't hidinghen i've lost all of those icons that i added to my toolbar. icons like "dictionary", "Internet", "gmail", "yahoo", "google" and many others that i can't think of right now.i don't even have a refresh button anymore.there aren't any of those little drop down arrows where i can just re-add stuff.
View 1 Replies View RelatedFriday night I had quick launch icons. Saturday morning I didn't. I also can't open the START menu and select "pin to start menu" on anything anymore. There are arrows next to certain programs as well (such as Word) that USED TO show recent documents but those don't even open anymore. All that exists there is an arrow with no functionality. What the heck? I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64. Why would all of my quick launch icons suddenly disappear and I can't drag and drop anything to the bar now? The bar isn't locked and nothing has changed in the system that I know of.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI keep losing the icons in Explorer, even with a fresh install of Windows 7. It takes some time, but sooner or later they disappear. It's always Internet Explorer first (associated with .mht files) and now I've lost Chrome (associated with .htm).
Rebuilding the Windows 7 icon cache has not worked in the past.
I've been looking around for something that can hide my desktop icons (or basically anything except my background & bottom navigation bar) if I'm not viewing the desktop. In other words, when I have a (not full screen) window open, I want to be able to see my desktop background but not the icons on it. When I "view" the desktop, or don't have anything on top of it, I want the icons back.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhy all desktop icons appear in the Desktop folder but not on the desktop itself?I set my desktop to show the Recicle Bin icon only, but if I open the Desktop folder in Explorer they are all there: Computer, Control Panel, Libraries, Network, User's Files, and Recycle Bin.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded a Win-XP home system to Win-7 Home Premium. Everything went fine. But I have four system icons on the desktop, two of which I want to keep and two that I'd like to get rid of. The two keepers are the My Computer and Network icons, the two I don't wan to see are the Home Group and Library icons. This machine is the only Win-7 box on the network so Home Group is moot, and I do not expect to explicitly use Libraries any time soon. So the associated icons are just clutter on the desktop. For whatever reason, the two keepers include a "delete" option in their right click menus but the two I actually want to delete don't. So, how do I get them off the desktop? I don't think any of the four were present on the desktop when I completed the installation, and I don't remember what I did to get them to show up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFinally I have found the place where my problem might get solved.Thing is: 1.There is a big "X" on 3 out of 4 disks I got(except "C" disk) as shown in the picture below: 2.Desktop icons are changed as well but not all of them. This is the second time this kind of crap happens to me. Last time it happened was after I clicked system backup. I couldn't stand the problem so I reinstalled my windows 7 pro 32bit and at first it was all ok. It came back after I rebooted which I couldn't figure out why. The only diffrence is last time all the desktop icons were changed, but this time as you can see some of the icons aren't changed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI stumbled upon an old XP desktop appearance adjustment in Windows 7 which allowed me to set the spacing between desktop icons, both horizontal and vertical. You could also choose the font and the font size and, most importantly, the icon size. I was delighted. I could order my icons just the way I needed them for my busy desktop. But then my water-cooled processor water pump broke and spilled water in my tower. Hours later, I had an air cooler on the processor and all was right again.I could not remember how I came to that wonderful desktop grid adjustment box.I searched for a long time but have not been able to track it down. So now I wonder if any of you savvy experts could be kind enough to point the way?
