Setting WinRAR To Exclude Specified Files From Being Extracted?
Apr 22, 2011
I would like to ask how to set WinRAR to exclude files with the exact filenames: 'thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' (without the quotes, ignore case) from being extracted from an archive.Ex. Files with these filenames should not be extracted
[code]...
Abcd.DS_STORE.txt In 'Settings->Security->Prohibited file types->File types to exclude from extracting', if I just type in 'thumbs.db .DS_Store' (without the quotes) in the field, will it work the way I described? Also, does anyone know if WinRAR has a syntax guide for the Prohibited file types list in case I'd like to add more filenames or be flexible with the rules I need? The reason for this question, is I'd like to not extract unnecessary files from ZIP, RAR or 7z archives in Windows 7 - files like Windows 2000/XP's Thumbs.db file (Thumbnail cache) and Mac OS X' .DS_Store file (Desktop Services Store), while not being too strict and also not extracting files which just contain 'Thumbs.db' or '.DS_Store' in its filename.

i had all my family pics and videos in a folder sizing 32 gb, so i compressed it to a file sizing 8gb and deleted the original folder. now i want extract it but it extract's only some videos totally sizing 8gb. it gives me a diagnostic msg saying that 3 of my files r corrupt. what should i do to get my pics back, it was a huge collection of memories,
So I have 42gb of priceless tv shows that are taking up too much space on my comp... What I want to do is compress these files. The only issue is that in order compress I need the room for the uncompressed AND compressed files. Is there a way I can tell Winrar to delete complete files as it is done rarring them? (Assuming winrar compresses files one at a time) That way if it were to stop suddenly like in a power outage or something the files wouldn't get deleted unless there were fully compressed... So yea I need to compress files but don't have the room to compress them...
I have my current Windows 7 setup on a regular 2TB drive (about 1.4TB of which is used). I would like to move my installation onto my new SSD (only 256GB), and obviously I can't simply clone it. I do NOT want to just install from scratch (I have a bazillion programs installed, it would take forever to do that over)
What I was thinking, was that I could migrate the base system files onto the SSD, and then use symbolic links to point to my bulkier folders (Program Files & Downloads are taking up most of the space, and I don't particularly care if these are at SSD speed) which would be located on the 2TB HDD. Does anyone know of a way to migrate a Windows 7 while excluding certain folders? If I could do that, then after the migration I could just set up symbolic links to point to my main storage drive without having to start from scratch.
I've downloaded the ethernet etc, and graphics drivers and put them into .rar files.I also downloaded winrar and tried putting the .exe as a data file (all files on one disc) so i could install that, then the drivers, but the exe doesn't even appear on the disc so i cannot install anything. cannot put the downloaded .exe of winrar on disc to install on another machine, doesn't even show, and as such drivers are useless.
This is a very weird problem. Anytime i download .rar files from the internet, it doesn't seem to matter if its a set of 50, 200mb files. or single files that ar anywhere from 40-100mbs i get completely random CRC errors in those files.
Example 1: I downloaded a set of 57 200mb files, and files 08,10,11,12,24, and 36 are corrupted. However if i re-download those files i will have a different set of corrupted files.
Example 2: I download a set of random sized files anywhere from 40-100mbs each all single files not .001 style setup of rar files. perhaps 2 or 3 of those files will have files inside that are corrupted. However if i wait a short while, and retry rarely but sometimes, they actually work, and do not seem to be corrupted. Sometimes after 3 or 4 tries they are still corrupted.
Example 3: I had a set of files totaling around 8gigs and i decided to pack them up. So i compressed them in rar format. to double check my work, i uncompressed them immediately and used them. they worked fine. around a month later i needed those files again and i uncompressed them again. around 4 of the files were corrupted. Every time i unrar them its the same files that are corrupted.
Many files have been downloaded off of rapidshare but not all.
I have already updated all my drivers to the latest including BIOS drivers I have tried this problem on Winrar and 7zip same problem on both. I have been advised my problem could be having a messy registry so i have used registry cleaners to no luck.
My current system setup is:
Asus Striker II NSE 2GB of OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Fatal1ty Edition Ram x2 Nvidia 9800 519mb x2 SLI WD Raptor 150gb x2 Raid 0 Windows7 Professional x64bit (also had this same problem on Windows7 Ultimate x64bit)
I have a simple request: to be able to exclude a folder (completely) from windows 7 indexing. That means, when I type something in the start menu, I don't even want file names to come up. It seems as far as I can get is having file content not be indexed, but file properties, including file names, are always indexed. I'd like to not have to disable indexing all together because it's very useful, but doesn't seem like it should be impossible to totally exclude a folder.I'm a teacher, and I have lots of students work on my computer that they submit electronically, but I teach many technical tutorials with a projector, and it seems not good form to have students work show up when I have to search for projects to show for examples
I have 10,000 pictures in a couple of hundred folders so I'm trying to Re-set all folders and files to details or large or whatever and I forgot how to do it because it has been a long time since
In the public folder I have a Pictures Sub folder with 100's of locked files. How to un lock the files for everyone?Example of the path C:UsersPublicPublic PicturesCamera*.jpgWant to change all files, folder is open to everyone.
Had a HP running Vista Home Premium. System board croaked and owner elected to buy a new HP with Win 7 Home Premium. I figured it would be a piece of cake to mount the old HD via a USB connection and run Windows 7 Easy Transfer to migrate things from there to the new computer.I had to copy everything over manually, one profile at a time.
This seems like an obvious scenario that WET should handle but it doesn't. Was there any other automated process I could have used? Just curious at this point as the work has already been done and the new computer is up and running.
I'm trying to set up two way sync between some files on my laptop and a network drive so that changes made to either the copy on the network or on my laptop get propagated to each other. I've read the instructions for setting up an "offline file" sync, which is a one way sync. The instructions usually mention that it's possible to set up a two-way sync, but they never actually describe how to do it.
I have taken many computers back to factory condition and never had any problems. This time, after backing up all my files to disc (15), in total, I have taken this HP laptop back to factory condition. There is no problem there. The restore is fine but I cant seem to load the discs I created. I have turned off the laptop completely, as directed and started it again with the alt f10 keys, which should automatically load my back up but nothing is happening and if I try to open the discs on their own, I get an error message saying that the path isn't there. I have already re-installed my various purchased software but it is the photos and personal files that I particularly want to get back. I have my own photos safely in a box but these photos belonged to someone else
I was trying to restore the computer the FIRST TIME I got it, but I've found out that the Recovery copy won't make any changes because I have two(2) Program Files for Internet Explorer, one is for 64bit OS, and the other is 32bit (x86).I've tried to enter in the command prompt: takeown /f "C:Program Files (x86)" /r /d n and it displays ERROR: The current logged on user does not have ownership privileges on the file (or folder) "C:Program Files (x86)". But I am the administrator and the owner of this Hitachi Laptop Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit OS.I could not play any movies via internet, and I don't know what plug-ins are missing, so I want to restore the computer to its Factory setting.
I have several computers and several users, where we wouldn't be able to survive without the "Everyone" group, as we are constantly sharing and unsharing. As in, having to choose to share with each user individually is not possible.
However, that creates a problem. What if I want to leave one computer out of the group, so that the folders are shared with everyone except for it?
I've been having this trouble on my laptop where the power setting just changes at will. I usually put it at power saving when i use it to write but it just takes 10-20 seconds before it by itself changes to High performance.
We are deploying 10 Toughbook H1's for doing electronic patient care reporting and interfacing with our dispatch center. They are running Windows 7 Professional and will have mobile broadband connections. We'd like to have them setup essentially the same, with all the same settings and restrictions. What is the best and fastest way to do this? I've used the local group policy editor but haven't been able to figure out how to copy those settings from one computer to another. Each computer will have a standard user account. We'd like to prevent the installation of programs (except by admins) and changing of most settings. We're also going to attempt to restrict most internet access except for approved sites.
I wish to install an SSD and put windows 7 64 bit on it. I don't have a cd/dvd copy of windows just the one on the recovery partition of my Dell Inspiron 580 1TB HD 8GB RAM.Firstly is there more than one cable to connect from the SSD to the motherboard or two like normal HD's?Secondly having fitted the SSD do I then boot up normally from my old HD and then somehow reinstall windows but selecting the SSD>?
Every time I create a new window, if I happen to already have a window from that same program open, I have to move it back up and left to set it in the top corner of the monitor.Windows off-sets new program interfaces down and to the right. And I move it back up and left.In todays world of multi-tabs and stacking task bars to group like programs, with selectable pop-up previews of programs from the task bar, why on earth do we still have to deal with the extremely irritating mode of "new windows must offset else the user will have no idea where his old window is" mentality.
I want to setup my IP Camera, and of course I need to do it via ethernet cable. So, when I put the IP address e.g. "192.168.1.102" in a browser (tried with IE9, Chrome and Firefox) , my Laptop doesn't even load or kept loading. This happens when I'm using Win 7 Home Basic, but with a Win XP laptop works great.
Does anyone know of a piece of software for use with Windows 7 that will allow one to create a new profile to return the computer to original configuration and then recover programs, files and desktop setting? My computer has slowed down a little and I believe it is time to restore it to original configuration and reinstall everything; however, I don't want to spend a week reinstalling software and setting up the desktop and all my program settings.

I'm a new Windows 7 user. I have a Coby 1GB mp3 player that I've been using as a thumb drive for years since the buttons on it broke off. I've put all kinds of files on it from documents to picture files. Yesterday I brought home my new netbook running Windows 7 Starter.. I took the mp3 player and plugged it in the USB port. Windows 7 recognized it with no problem.. but to my surprise, it doesn't show the files on it. So I tried to put files on it.. and it doesn't seem to allow anything but music files (MP3's) to be put on it. It's very odd because my Windows XP desktop computer allowed me to use it as a basic thumb drive and it accepted all types of files to be put on it.. not just MP3s.Is there a setting on Windows 7 that would allow me to use the MP3 player like a regular USB flash drive as I did on my XP system?

My brother set his max cpu rate to 30% in power options. He says it saves power on his notebook and the batteries last longer. I told him thats a bad idea. But he dont listen to me.
