I have a Buffalo HD-LB3 3TB external harddrive. My main goal is to get it to work with my xbox 360. I was able to get it to work on my blueray player but it is not found by my Xbox. I have formatted it to Fat32 and I have partitioned it into two pieces, 1.8 TB and 1.1 TB. Still nothing is working.

Today I upgraded my 64 bit Vista Ultimate to 32 bit Seven Ultimate (retail). I did it by using the DVD to boot up and do a custom install as it wouldn't do a standard upgrade cos of the 32 bit/64 bit clash.
Anyway, it worked smoothly up until I go to my external hard drive to look at some old photos. I plug it in and it gets recognised, but then I get told that it needs formatting before it can be used. No way am I doing that!
I check the hard drive on another machine running XP and the drive is fine.
Any idea what's going on?
Perhaps I should just format the C drive and do a completely clean re-install of Seven?

View 9 Replies View Relatedmy external hard drive (WD elements 1TB) has recently shrewd up after i formatted it. it has nothing on it not even a partition or format i added a partition using disk manger but i wont format it says format was unable to complete or something like that and it removes the partition that i just put on it i then partitioned it again but chose not to format and it had a drive letter and showed up as local drive in my computer when i looked at the format it just said RAW that is as far as i can get to getting it working?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a LaCie external hard drive which works fine on other pc's running Windows 7 Ultimate, but on this one it is an "unknown device". I have tried it in different ports but with the same result. I've checked with Windows Compatability and the exact model is listed there as being compatible. I've been to the manufacturer's website but there are no drivers available.I have the same problem with any USB device I plug into any port. I have tried a complete Windows re-install from a different CD but it made no difference.The only USB devices that work are the keyboard and mouse.I have given the LaCie HD as an example because I am hoping that if I can get a specific device to work, I may be able to solve the problem with others.

Given that the entire hard disk will be occuppied with one huge file, what is the best way to format it? Is NTFS still the way to go? Does it make sense to increase the cluster size above the 4KB default?
I am concerned about both performance and not wasting space, but the performance is the lesser concern.
750 Samsung portable device. Problems seems to sort itself out eventually but it keeps firing up prompts to format the drive before I can use it. First time it happened I had to unplug it, restarted and then it was OK. It just did it again and then again when I restarted, took a minute or two but eventually it read the drive and it was ok. Why is this happening and what can I do to stop it? Might it be a power issue? I have the device connected via a USB 2.0 port, through an extension lead and then through a 4 way splitter. I have had problems with this splitter before I think, but not with the small connector. Maybe I can try connecting it through one of the other ports and see if it still has the same problem.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi was trying to find out on the net how to format my old xbox 360 hdd for pc since i can't use it anyways because i got the new xbox that doesn't use those anymore so i stumbled across a thread showing how to do it and i thought i would explain how to do this so you can use it as a normal external HDD.first what you need is a xbox hdd and a xbox 360 hard drive transfer cable
1.download a tool called Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool link: [URL]
2.once you install that start the hard disk low level format tool and select your xbox 360 HDD?
3.click the tab called low-level format?
4.Then click "format this device" and wait a while for it to finish formatting the xbox hdd?
5.When its finished formatting go to your windows start menu right click on computer and choose manage?
6.click on the tab called disk management and there should be your xbox hdd but un-formated so your going to have to make it NTFS format and right click on it and make a new simple volume. If it does not allow you to make a new simple volume then right click were it says disk on the side like for example disk1 depending how many HDD's your pc has and choose convert to GPT disk,mines already formatted should look similar just without the NTFS and custom named hdd?
7.once that is done it should make your xbox HDD usable on your pc like any normal pc HDD ?
i tried to install my xbox360 wireless reciever on my windows 7 64 bit quad core desktop went throught the hole device manager update drivers microsoft xbox common control class but the only option there is xbox 360 common control theres no wireless options there went to microsoft and downloaded xbox accessorys 1.2 installed and still the same problem.

I can have folders and WORD documents on my desktop, and it always comes up now with nothing found. If I create a test Folder, or WORD document, put on the Desktop, it won't find them. Always used to work fine. Only difference now is that I put in a new HD after the old one failed. Everything else seems to work fine.

It shows in My Computer as a drive letter J but it doesn't show the usual capacity and free space. Disk management detects it though. Then opening the drive gives me the message that the drive needs to be reformatted before it can be used. I don't want to loose the 900GB files I have in it so I tried some recovery programs like Wondershare but it only recovered 10GB of my files.

As long as files added to my media library are stored locally on my C: drive, they show up on my console. If I add a folder which is on my external G: drive, its contents appear in the media library but do not appear on the console. I'm not sure if this is because of some security settings on the external drive- I think the problem began when I updated to Windows 7 and took ownership of the external hard drive (because "<unknown contact>" was listed as the files' owner).

(My controller is wired by the way.)I have downloaded the driver multiple times , uninstalled it , restarted my computer etc.I have tried everything that was on the internet , at this point i don't know what to do anymore and i'm frustrated.In fact , the controller works fine and the driver too , but when i move the controller or take it in my hands , the lights start flashing and it looks like the driver ''disconnect''. have made a video of it where you can see me taking the controller in my hands and the lights flashing , you also hear a noise of ''new material detected'' when it flash because the driver stop working for a second or two.Also , if i move too much with the controller , i get a blue screen of death.All my drivers are up to date , i'm using a program called DriverUpdate and i have the full version of it.

I used it with Vista and then with Windows 7.Everything worked perfectly until few days ago...when I tried to turn the controller on (pressing the middle button), the green lights just started flashing and blinking. I run windows 7 ultimate 64bit on Intel quad core, 2gb ram with nvidia geforce 9600gt. Starting out with no idea what to do, after a some fiddling and searching i have now got both shark's codecs installed (normal and x64bit) and can run some MKVs through Windows media center using my 360 as an extender.
However, on about half of my MKV files i get the error message:
"The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct coded is not installed or the file is corrupt" when trying to play on the xbox360. These same files play fine on Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player on the PC however.
I have tried various settings and also divx and CCCP codecs packs with the same result, (although i had to change some stuff in regedit to get MKV to show up on the xbox using divx) If you need any more information feel free to ask. Edit: I have noticed using sharks analyze function that the MKV which play are: "Format settings, ReFrames : 4 frames" and the ones which do not work are "Format settings, ReFrames : 5 frames"
Can I format a Hard Drive with Windows 7 using a 2000 format disk. If so, what are the prompts i see and action on boot-up before I use the format C. Done it before but just forgot

The problems im having is one is the driver disk i got with the dongle wont install, it just says install failed. and the other is the headset wont recognise as a headset for some reason. The headset works on mine and the Mrs mobile phones with out a problem.Is there something iv missed out? Iv looked on-line but cant find anything specificity about my situation.

DVD Tray opens and light comes on but does not play DVD. 1st USB port on left side gets - USB Device Not Recognized.One under it works and one on the right side works.OS Windows7 Ultimate. It is running kind of screwy so I wanted to reinstall Windows7 but with the DVD not operating Can't do it. Seems like maybe something in the register got erased or corrupted.
