View 6 RepliesWhy do files moved to an external drive not behave the same as those same files in an internal drive? I noticed that if I do anything to a file that is in an external drive, that file can not be saved under the same name (read only). In order to do so one must save it internally and then copy or move it to the external drive. So I did just that--I copied a file from taken from an external drive, saved it in the internal one and then copied it back to the external one. Now if I r-click the propeerties of these 2 same files and then go to the 'Security' tab a difference is immediately apparent: The internal one has -1- System & -2 My-computername (user-PCuser and -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) with all 3 accounts allowing all (full control, read, write, etc..). While the external drive has in Properties; -1- System -2- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) and -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) with this final 3d one (and different one) with no Allow for "full control, or modify or write. So how does one have all its files in this external drive behave and be equal to all the same files in the internal drive?Since -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) in the external drive is that which is differnt from the internal drive I was wondering if it is OK to delete this Permission or 'attribute' or whatever it is called and create instead one equal to the one in the internal drive -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators)? ANd of course doing so in one go and not file after file after file individually?

My second hard drive (D) was the one that I think I had XP on before I upgraded to Windows 7. I installed Windows 7 on the 1st hard drive (C). So at this point I just want (D) to be as clean, empty as possible. But in trying to delete many of the files, it gets to the point where it says Admin approval required. I cant get past that part. I need help with this please. I dont care if I erase the whole hard drive, just want it cleaned up.

I have taken the hard drive out of my old PC. My new PC of course has windows 7. I am not a computer expert but I am not a novice either. The old hard drive has the sata connection and I have a sata cable, but have never used one previously. I connected the cable to the old hard drive and then plugged in the power cord to the wall outlet. I then I connected the USB cable from the sata cable connected to my old drive to my new PCs USB port. I haven't been able to access the files on the old drive but I know my new pc has recognized the hardware. After I connected the USB cable to my new pc under Devices I can see a hardware named USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge. Not sure what that means. There is No drive listed for it though when I open Windows Explorer. I can only see the (OS) C drive and the HP Recovery D drive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 7 64-bit. My SSD drive (128GB) died and I am waiting for a replacement so I decided to reconstruct the OS drive and transfer the image when I get my SSD back in a week or so. I decided to partition a drive of approx. 128 GB after I finished configuring Windows 7. However, There is a HUGE .sys file on my C drive. The name looks like some sort of system generated name ({aed8a510-a6d5-11e1-94ce-806e6f6e6963}.sys). It looks like a GUID and it is 134GB. I can't get into the file because it's a sys file and I'm sure if I delete it there will be terrible consequences. It has todays date on it. Does anyone know what this could possibly be? I've used Disk Cleanup and CCleaner and a few other utilities and Googled it like crazy to see if it can be safely deleted but none of these even list it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo, i woke up the other day to see my Windows 7 computer is now completely screwed up that i am on right now..C drive is Mirror RAIDed to let you know.It is reporting 74.1MB free of 465GB total on the drive. No matter what i delete, it does NOT EVER free up space. As a matter of fact, some files delete, then come right back, files i've added myself.. weird #1Two, i run chkdsk in windows, it says C drive is a RAW drive and cant scan however it boots up fine to it every time. weird #2So i then use windows repair command prompt to chkdsk /F /R It sees it's NTFS JUST FINE..but reports ZERO errors.. weird #3I scan using Intel Matrix Storage Console in windows, NO ERRORS, weird #4But i am getting Disk I/O errors like crazy in windows logs and in programs, etc.. weird #5I selected all files on Disk C- total space in use under 300gb, but showing 465GB in use.. weird #6Scanned for infections with AVG, no errors, i tried malwarebytes, will not open- 0xc000005. weird #7So i have a drive that can't be read but is read but reporting wrong size but measures right size that has no errors but has errors.

When I plug in a USB flash drive, it's creating 2 files: file.db and recent.db These database files will open in notepad. File.db seems to be a list of all files on the flash drive and recent.db is a list of recently accessed files on the drive. If I delete them, it just recreates them. I don't see similar files on my C drive. Also, my work computer running Windows 7 Enterprise does not create them when I insert a USB drive. As a matter of privacy, I'd rather not have lists of my files on the drives.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhat do with the the swap file on my SSD. It's a new OCZ Agility 3 with updated firmware. I also have an older Crucial SSD where I'd like to implement the same strategy.I'm debating putting my swap file on the HD to get it off the SSD but I'd like the hard drives to spin down when not in use. One box will be a media center PC that will be always on and having hard drives constantly spinning seems like overkill. If I put a swap file on the HD, will that drive ever go into sleep mode? I'm guessing no. Right now, I'm leaning towards small swap file on the SSDs say (512 to 2048). It'll also be easier to deal with if I ever decided to swap out or rearrange the HDS.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just did a custom install from Vista to Windows 7 with an upgrade disc. After completing the setup, deleting windows.old, and reinstalling all of my programs, I noticed that there were old folders on the C: drive. It is as if it didn't move anything from the root drive to the windows.old file.
I'm annoyed at myself for not noticing it sooner. Now I don't want to do another install since I spent all that time reinstalling the programs and configuring them for personal use.
I'm tempted to go in and just delete the old folders from the root drive, but I'm nervous. Honestly, I can't be certain of what should and shouldn't be there.
Is there anyway I can tell which folders on the root drive are leftovers? I thought about deleting according to the date modified stamp, but I'm not certain that is safe either.
Can anyone advise me? I really don't want to do another install of Windows 7, but I was pretty excited about starting with a true clean slate. I just can't help but wonder what else it left behind.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just built my first computer, and it has an SSD and an HDD. I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on the brand new SSD, and on the C Drive I'm seeing a windows.old file that is 11.5GB, and there is a windows file that is 12.3GB. I don't get this at all. Like I said, it is my first computer.....everything seemed to go well with the build, and sp far things are working, but I know this isn't right. This was a brand new drive, like I said, I do remember when it was going through the different parts of the install, and restarting several times, that it seemed like it was staarting at the beginning again.....as If when it had finished, I didn't take the DVD out, and was basically starting the install "again"....if that makes sense, I stopped it, and pulled the DVD and it booted up, and seems o.k.

At boot it stops and gives me this msg: Checking file system on c: file type is NTFS (blah blah) one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency.
Words close to that anyway. It counts down to check or skip but stops at 1 second to press any key. I ran diagnostics on all hardware, everything checks out OK. I haven't done any reconfiguring or added any hardware. This is out of the box preinstalled.
