I'm the only person using my computer (usually). I have the secret Administrator account turned on and password protected. And my day-to-day account is a Standard account. Do I really need to password protect my standard account? What are the reasons to?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm building a Windows 7 PRo PC for a local club and want to lock down the PC. I have setup an Admin account, and set the main user account as a Standard account. I also want them to be able to use W7 Backup/Restore to backup the Standard Users "My Documents" folder to memory stick on a weekly basis. However, Backup/Restore will only run:
1. From the Administrator account , or
2. When executed from the Standard account it requests the administrator Password.
So in other words, it appears that for a Standard user to run a backup they need Admin rights? Kind of defeats the purpose of having a Standard account in this scenario. Is there any way to confer specific "rights" to a User account or Profile to access/execute specific programs? In this case allow a Standard User account the normal access, plus Backup/Restore (only) with conferred Admin rights?
I set up a standard user account on my desktop and it worked. I did the same thing with my laptop and when I try to enter a password in my standard user account on the laptop, it says the logon feature will not support it. Is there something I am overlooking seeing that it works on the desktop?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a multi-users Windows 7 (64bits) system, with one Administrator priviledge accounts, the others being non-admin. Disk is partition with system on C and data on D and E.
All users can access to D and E.
How to enforce security properties so that delete file or folder on D or E must prompt for admin password? I see that I can totally prevent DELETE, but I just want to permit delete, when user successfully entered admin pwd on prompt.
If I right-click on D: Then properties and view security tab, I see 4 groups:
* Authentified users
* System
* the admin account
* users (the admin account as user)
I just installed a new 64 gig SSD in my computer. I also have a 2T secondary hard drive.The SSD is not big enough to contain all the stuff that will eventually be in "My documents",i.e. under "users" so I need to move the users directory to my secondary hard drive but havewindows behave as it were in its original location.I did some research and found the following technique which seemed plausible (and several people said it worked for them)
1. Install windows normally.
2. After install, boot from installation disk.
3. Get into the command prompt by clicking "repair".
4. Use robocopy to copy c:users to d:users. The command line should be: robocopy c:users d:users /mir /xj /copyall
5. Verify all files copied successfully.
6. Delete c:users. Command line should be: rmdir /s /q c:users
7. Delete c:documents and settings. Command line should be: rmdir "c:documents and settings"
8. Create junction to new users directory. Command line should be: mklink /j c:users d:users
9. Create junction for the old "documents and settings". Command line should be: mkdir /j "c:documents and settings" d:users
10. Restart computer.
Note:When in recovery mode the disk drives end up with different drive letters than what the normally have.Consequently my SSD drive which is "C" became "E" and my hard drive which is "D" became "C". Confusing, but I adjusted the above commands to reflect this.All seemed to go well until I rebooted. The computer booted up fine, but when I entered my password to log in windows complained that it could not find my profile. Since I could not log in at all I was forced to re-install windows. Supposedly, this is doable and I NEED to do it asap as my SSD will not hold all the stuff that will eventually be in "users".
I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.
So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.
Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?
What are the all users and default users folders? Do I need them or can I delete them if I am the only user.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently suffered a trojan virus attach and ultimately have changed my password on my email server.I have tried to reset it to the new password in Windows mail multiple times. It keeps reverting to the old password as the saved password, and I continually have to retype in the new password. I tried resetting the password to nothing, and rebooting, and the old password comes back again.There must be a preference file or an ini file that I can edit. Can I do that without loosing my address book, etc.?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Windows 7 RC1 32-bit OS onto my laptop. Without thinking i needed any drivers, i went to play World of Warcraft. It told me that it could not locate a display device and wouldn't work. I figured i needed to install my grpahics card drivers for my Nvidia 9 series card. When i went to install the drivers, an error message appeared saying that it could not locate drivers compatible with my device.
I went to dxdiag and under display it shows that i have a standard vga adapter and won't recognize my actual graphics card. I'm not sure if i'm missing drivers, i haven't installed anything else except for this attempt at installing the nvidia driver.
I've archived many movies to Disc using the very excellent AnyDVD software - I've copied them as ISO's - complete copies of the originals whatever the size but obviously removed region coding B/S and CSS.If I want to play these again on a normal DVD player (not a Computer) which can play DVD RW / DVD RAM etc how can I get say a 6 GB iso dual layer or whatever the original iso format is on to one or more 4.7 GB standard DVD's so I can play the disc on the DVD player.I don't mind losing subtitles, different sound tracks etc as I've still got these on the original ISO copy on disc but I want to keep the HIGHEST POSSIBLE screen resolution -- preferably the original if possible.Eventually I'll be able to STREAM the archived ISO to the TV but It will be a while before I set up a decent multi-media server.Divx is no good -- it compresses the image too much for a decent high quality large size LCD TV.The DVD player also does a really good job of upscaling "normal" DVD's to 1080p - very little discernable difference between a DECENT upscaled normal DVD and a "Blu Ray" one --- and without the added complexity of having to go through hoops with Blu Ray protection -- so you can play a DISC YOU HAVE PAID FOR on YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT.Don't you just hate all this stuff stopping you from using the media wherever you want -- didn't work for music and its not going to work for video media too -- but that's aanother whole issue.

I would like to "move" it from that hard drive to my new SSD and boot from the SSD. What is the best way to go about doing that? View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having some BSOD probs, so I'm currently updating all of my drivers. The only one I can't find an update for is called PCI Standard Host CPU Bridge. Could you point me in the right direction, so I can get the update?
Also, for some reason, PCI Standard Host CPU Bridge is listed twice in Device Manager... and both entries seem identical. Would this mean I have to update both?

Just done a clean install of windows 7 on my Sony VPN-SZ5VWN and it has installed all drivers apart from the display.It has a nVidia Go 7400 however when I try to install it it just states there is no nividia products. If I try to uninstall the VGA driver, it asks me to restart and then, before I can do anything, it reinstalls the standard VGA adapter driver. I do get a solution saying to download the driver however this does not work.The original drivers are for Vista and Sony provides no other supported OS for them.

I have a Dell Precision M90, with 4 gigs of ram, a 2.00 GHz core duo processor, and a Nvidia Quadro FX 2500M video card.
In the device manager, my display adapter shows as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. I'm decent with computers, so I've upgraded video card drivers before. However, for some reason it is not allowing me to upgrade this driver. I have tried with both a 2500M driver as well as a 7900GTX driver (which worked for me in Vista).
I have also tried uninstalling the driver first, but it won't let me install another one before restarting and when I restart it just reinstalls the Standard VGA Graphics adapter.
i have been looking through my system info i noticed that my Standard VGA adapter (the pre installed one that comes wit Win 7) has no VRAM, plz help i cant play any games i need 64mb of VRAM. I tried getting Nvidia display adapters but I cant install my working graphic driver, just the ones my comp cant support.

This is an administrator account without a password. When I went into the control panel,I demoted Account B to a standard user. Apparently, however, account B can simply change this setting even though she is a standard user. Is this true? Even when I set a password for my account, account B can still bypass it or demote me. It said he is running from a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter. His computer is fairly old, but all of the hardware is pretty good except for the video card. I brought him my old 7700 GTS for him to use for the time being, but I cannot install the drivers for it, and the computer still says he is running Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.
