I set up a standard user account on my desktop and it worked. I did the same thing with my laptop and when I try to enter a password in my standard user account on the laptop, it says the logon feature will not support it. Is there something I am overlooking seeing that it works on the desktop?
View 4 RepliesI am using Windows 7 Pro 64x and apparently the default user account (Owner) that I use is not working correctly. Unless I have UAC set to Never Notify, I cannot open Control Panel or UAC again. I have created a second user account as Administrator and it works correctly.
I would like to know if there is any way to fix this problem short of a clean install of Windows. If not, is it possible to move all of my settings to the user account that works correctly and delete the one that does not.
I have always been running admin and even until now I run as admin. But, I have been doing a little bit of research and realize that using a standard account is a safer practice. I have never even used a standard account.Is using a standard account a better practice? Also, how does doing average task such as installing programs and updating work through the standard user account?

Used my administrative account to install software (Microsoft Office Suite), Microsoft Security Essentials, Ccleaner, and Malawarebytes. All programs installed properly. As these computers are going to be used in a public place by junior and senior high school students, I thought it would be best to set up a standard user account for each of the four computers. I have it set up but when I log in as a standard use (non administrative) all the programs that were installed are not available. Tell me if I'm wrong. I think the programs would still be listed in program files when the standard user is open. Can I go to each of the programs and right click to open and then be prompted to key in my administrative password. I would think this should allow the program to be run in the standard user desktop.

The latest one is Start/Default Programs/Set program access and computer defaults. It tells me I do not have permission, no opportunity to elevate rights, so I had to log into the admin account.

Usually, when you right click on a program, for example: Spybot S&D There is an option to "Run as Administrator". And if you click it, it prompts for an admin password.but for me, it does not ask for an admin password, it just ignores the fact that I clicked that completely, and runs it as a standard user.
This happens whenever I need admin privileges for something. I cannot elevate my privileges on a standard user account.It used to work properly, until I changed my account type to standard, and enabled the Administrator account.

On the administrator account you can print to my printer, but on the standard accounts you can't. View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm building a Windows 7 PRo PC for a local club and want to lock down the PC. I have setup an Admin account, and set the main user account as a Standard account. I also want them to be able to use W7 Backup/Restore to backup the Standard Users "My Documents" folder to memory stick on a weekly basis. However, Backup/Restore will only run:
1. From the Administrator account , or
2. When executed from the Standard account it requests the administrator Password.
So in other words, it appears that for a Standard user to run a backup they need Admin rights? Kind of defeats the purpose of having a Standard account in this scenario. Is there any way to confer specific "rights" to a User account or Profile to access/execute specific programs? In this case allow a Standard User account the normal access, plus Backup/Restore (only) with conferred Admin rights?
I'm currently administrator of a couple different groups of computers at a university, and I've been looking into changing the layout of the logon screen. I've found a lot of information, but something that I have wanted from the start has eluded me. I'd like to set the logon screen (or welcome screen I suppose) to display only one available account: the guest account that I have personalized for professors or students to use (not the same as the default Windows guest account). I would also like to have the option to switch users at the logon screen, preferably with the on-screen button that says switch users which I can't seem to get to display using my methods.
System Specs All of the PCs I am administrating have some differences... Simply put, I have a bunch of desktops running Windows 7 Pro x64, and a bunch of NetBooks running Windows 7 Starter x86. I've made my attempts on one of the NetBooks thus far since I can carry it around. On Windows 7 Starter it seems that "Switch User" is disabled, but I think it is still in the PC because when I tried a Registry Hack that hides all user accounts except the one that was last logged into, I had the option to switch users, but only when the account I last used had a password. The guest account does not and cannot have one. Anyway, the registry hack I just mentioned involves going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE..... and creating a bogus key under the ProfileList key.
I also tried a similar thing to the above which didn't work, I can't remember what it was though.I have also tried hiding the default administrative account I made while keeping the other account visible, but this results in me not being able to log into that account from the Login screen, and the system will automatically login to the guest account because it doesn't have a password. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I need a way to get into the other account. This was done by changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOF... and adding the account to hide as a 32 bit DWORD. Don't hide all of your administrator accounts in this fashion, or you'll be screwed FYI.
The third thing I tried was adding an entry for fast user switching and enabling/disabling it, in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOF.... and adjusting the "HideFastUserSwitching" key. This didn't seem to have any effect.I also tried various combinations of the above, but that didn't get me the outcome I was looking for either. This has all been on the netbook, but I'm looking for a solution that will work on the NetBooks and the Desktops.
I am trying to network two win 7 computers. I get the screen Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
I have gone done the following: 1. Same user names and password 2. disabled windows firewall and avg free. 3. Answered "On" to all private network selections. 4. Local security policy to classic 5. Shared files I want to access. 6. Home group named as workgroup
The computer comes up in the Networking and Sharing. When selected I get the screen Logon failure: unknown username or bad password. I have even had my ISP pro look at this and he cannot figure it out. Same thing has happened to me in vista. I am using new win 7 installs. I can map drives with ip addresses and access.

Essentially I cannot install anything, as it requires User Account Control verification, but the password field for the admin pass does not show up, so the only option each time is to click 'No' and cancel the installation. I assume this is because there is no admin password set. I tried for a long while previously, I have tried to enter using safe mode and try and disable UAC, yet when doing so the UAC actually pops up in sade mode without the pass field again. I have also tried using Offline NT Registor and Password Editor to create a new pass for the admin, yet no luck as the admin afterwards doesn't require a pass nor does the pass field in the UAC show.

He forgot the password for the main account and whenever I try to transfer files to an external hard drive, a screen pops up and tells me to it cannot transfer files without password. Is there anyway to get around this? EDIT: I thought maybe it would be important to add that the account that I'm using to get access to the files must not have permissions to change anything on the computer. Don't ask me how my friend figured out how to restrict himself from changing anything on the computer, but he did and this general lack of knowledge about computers, likely got in into the trouble, that now is going to require me to do a full restore.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a computer that appears to have gone through the "Windows Recover" virus/malware. The user appeared to do a good job of removing the virus and used System Restore to dial the system back about a week (which unfortunately is the furthest back the restore points go for some reason). Everything seemed to work except for the main users account, which had it's profile locations changed to something like c:usersTEMP.username-PC.000. It was pointing to this directory instead of the original directory. I then opened up regedit and found the entries atHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders all pointing to the wrong folder, so I manually edited every entry to point to the correct folder and restarted.
This ended up working against me. When I logged into the account none of the shell folder shortcuts in the start menu would do anything when you clicked on them. The menu would stay up and it was as if I was clicking on nothing at all; no response.Instead of reversing the edits I had just made manually I decided to try using System Restore to revert the system back to the earliest date, which the owner of the PC said they had done themselves before I got there. I figured the worst that could happen would be it would be just as it was when I first looked at it.After performing system restore I can only log into the Administrator account.Every other account on the system produced the error message "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. The user profile cannot be loaded."
When I try to start up Windows normally, I type in my password for the user account and then it just freezes, it doesn't load. So I think, okay, I'll just try to start up it in Safe Mode, no problem. But when I try to start it in Safe Mode the computer freezes at classpnp.sys and doesn't continue. I'm at a loss about what to do.
My computer is a Gateway Desktop, running Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit), intel premium processor, 1 TB hard drive, 6 GB DDR3 memory. I tried using the "Last Known Good Config" option, to no avail. I got the "Replacing invalid security ID" message. I let that go for about an hour when I stopped it, as it was going nowhere. If it makes any difference, I have also installed another operating system (Ubuntu).
My real issue is that I forgot my User password for the only, and hence, Administrator account on my laptop. I was going to try and do a system recovery from my Sytem Image back up, but I can't access the System Repair boot menu without the password.Alternatively, any information for reseting/removing an Administrator User account password for Windows 7.
