In one of my user account( standard User account) i cant see folder icons ,thumbnails etc but iam able to see all folder icons etc in my admin user account? .even,my computer icon in desktop is corrupted and not properly visible.in windows explorer also,it is the same case.
View 2 RepliesI am using Windows 7 Pro 64x and apparently the default user account (Owner) that I use is not working correctly. Unless I have UAC set to Never Notify, I cannot open Control Panel or UAC again. I have created a second user account as Administrator and it works correctly.
I would like to know if there is any way to fix this problem short of a clean install of Windows. If not, is it possible to move all of my settings to the user account that works correctly and delete the one that does not.
I have always been running admin and even until now I run as admin. But, I have been doing a little bit of research and realize that using a standard account is a safer practice. I have never even used a standard account.Is using a standard account a better practice? Also, how does doing average task such as installing programs and updating work through the standard user account?

Used my administrative account to install software (Microsoft Office Suite), Microsoft Security Essentials, Ccleaner, and Malawarebytes. All programs installed properly. As these computers are going to be used in a public place by junior and senior high school students, I thought it would be best to set up a standard user account for each of the four computers. I have it set up but when I log in as a standard use (non administrative) all the programs that were installed are not available. Tell me if I'm wrong. I think the programs would still be listed in program files when the standard user is open. Can I go to each of the programs and right click to open and then be prompted to key in my administrative password. I would think this should allow the program to be run in the standard user desktop.

The latest one is Start/Default Programs/Set program access and computer defaults. It tells me I do not have permission, no opportunity to elevate rights, so I had to log into the admin account.
I tried starting Control Panel using Run as administrator and going in through there, did the same thing.

I don't have any programs blocked under Parental Controls. Is there a way to grant access to certain programs without having to log in as administrator every time while using a standard user account?

Usually, when you right click on a program, for example: Spybot S&D There is an option to "Run as Administrator". And if you click it, it prompts for an admin password.but for me, it does not ask for an admin password, it just ignores the fact that I clicked that completely, and runs it as a standard user.
This happens whenever I need admin privileges for something. I cannot elevate my privileges on a standard user account.It used to work properly, until I changed my account type to standard, and enabled the Administrator account.

I did the same thing with my laptop and when I try to enter a password in my standard user account on the laptop, it says the logon feature will not support it. Is there something I am overlooking seeing that it works on the desktop?

On the administrator account you can print to my printer, but on the standard accounts you can't. I have made sure that the printer is set to be the default and it does list the printer but says it is offline.

Since then most of my standard Windows 7 icons are missing/not showing up.
I tried rebuilding the icon cache with tutorials posted on this site = no luck.
Also tried a restore point, still no luck. Have attached 2 screenshots for you
All else is running smoothly and I don't really want to reinstall all Windows just because of a few icons not showing up

I notice in User Accounts it says the name change is for Welcome screen and Start Menu. Why can't we change the User folder name?Is there any option besides to delete account and start over? View 6 Replies View RelatedMy husband and I just got a new desktop, I originally planned on sharing a user account but since we're both in school I figured to have our own user accounts just to keep our files more separated and everything. So I created a second user account for me. I then realized that since he uses MY iTunes account, it makes sense that we use a shared music folder. Somehow I effed up my folders, the Public Music folder in particular. The only way I could see how to fix it was to restore it. Well that fixed the music folder problem, but it restored the computer back to before I had set up my own user login. No problem, I went back in and re-created it. Now my problem is that the user accounts are just fine, but the user folder from my first account is still in the the C drive under "users" but technically there is no user account that's attached to it. And of course, the folder is locked. I tried to delete it, but got a popup saying I was about to delete a system file so How to I remedy this situation???

I've created a new administrators account, and removed the old one, copying the user profile to the new account but changing the account name. Everything works fine, except now whenever I install a program, it recreates the previous user folder in C:Users(old username) to extract the installation files.I'm wondering how I would go about changing the default directory to prevent this from happening, and whether there are any other problems similar to this that I might encounter?

The music file I used for the account was could not be found and when I went to locate it I was told I didn't have administrator rights. I went to Control Panel because I was sure I was an Administrator, but sure enough, I was set as a Standard User. I tried changing it up but it wouldn't change. I tried changing the account name also, and it wouldn't change. I could only change account picture. I can't open UAC, I click it and it blinks but nothing opens. When I boot into the standard user, I am prompted by UAC for the admin password for 4 programs to start. All the programs are ASUS utilities that came with mymotherboard.I have checked the permissions of the programs and the User group has full control.Also, these programs do not show up in the MSCONFIG startup tab. Does anyone know if one could designate a user folder location such as E:Data instead of using the users name and being a subdirectory of "Users". I am the ONLY one on my computer - and it would seem much easier to look to the top folder in the E drive than clicking thru E:, users, name, documents, project. I fully realize that I can set up shortcuts, but when you are in an application that wants to place a file somewhere else and presents you with an explorer windows it is a pain. The only method I thought of is using redirection with symbolic links.
