I've recently found that I'm unable to use the "save as" function on any 32bit applications as attempting to do so causes the system to hang as it loads the explorer browser to allow me to pick a save location. I initially discovered the problem about a week ago and originally thought the problem was just limited to Internet Explorer and Firefox, but after poking around my system a bit more, it looks like its affecting everything except 64bit Internet Explorer 8 which can save without any problems.

Is there any way to set the default save location folder for downloads in IE8 to the last folder that the same file type was saved in? It makes no sense to default to a single folder and have to browse through to the desired folder for every single download, so I assume there has to be an option somewhere.

I did a clean install of windows 7 pro using sysprep to move my user files and program data to other drives. This works well as I only have a 120gb SSD running Windows 7 and a partition for Win 8 Pro that I haven't installed yet.
I changed the default installation path from c: to s: in both the 32/64 bit registry and now some of the programs (photoviewer, media player, defender) won't run. I've fixed the programs that I could, pointing those back to c: as I did not move any of the programs that comes with windows.

My System OS: Win 7 x64.All ICONs for MS apps, Snagit, UltraEdit/Compare , Adobe got wacked when I installed Solarwinds Advanced Subnet Calculator v9.0.6.I have a request out to them to see if they have any knowledge. How do I get the original icons back?I had this happen a short while back but did not know when it happened and after trying the myriad ideas that I came across on the web and thru this form learned that this seems to be a known issues and has been since Vista but no fixes surfaced. As it has been some time since my last post perhaps someone has uncovered a fix.I just tried using the restore point back to before the Solarwinds App was installed and no change so it seems that whatever files got smacked by the application install did not get changed back by the restore point operation.

I was having probs installing Office 2007 a while back and whilst using 2 forums for help to resolve the issue, one of the things i had to do was (i think) change the default install path for when i'm installing new programs. The 2 links for the help pages i was using are: Office 2007 Install Error 2203 - Office Setup Error 2203. An Internal Error has occurred.
The problem i've created is that now i'm unable to apply most updates for the programs that are currently installed (and thus on shutdown it always tries to apply updates, that fail) and also, i'm not able to install and new programs.

I find it folly to install my applications on the C drive, especially the larger applications. Doing so makes the C drive so large that it is cumbersome to make the image backups that I think are necessary to insure an easy recovery from any problem causing a failure to boot. In WinXP, there is an easy way to change the default install location by changing ProgramFilesDir at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows Current Version. I changed that to a specific folder on my D drive and have used that for the last 8 years with no problem. It appears this registry key is only used by install programs to let them know where you want your programs installed.I really miss this wonderful feature in windows 7. Actually windows 7 has the same registry key, but unfortunately it does not seem to be used for the same purpose. I'm not sure exactly what it does, but at least for some programs, Windows seems to use it as a path to find the program when it is to be executed. Of course that would make little sense because there would be no way to actually change the key without breaking something. (What sense is there in having a registry key that can't be changed?). I have tried changing this key on two different systems and eventually it did lead to problems on both systems. So now I'm back to laboriously changing the path from C:program files or C:program files (x86) every single time I install an application (which it turns out I do quite often).
Is it possible that a script could be developed to search for C:program files or program files(x86) in an edit box and replace it with my preferred path with a single hot key? That would at least take most of the drudgery out of it, although it would still require choosing the "custom" install on many applications, not to mention the occasional errant applications that always install to the default install path with no chance for user intervention.

I just built a new computer which includes a SSD and Hard Drive. I plan to use my SSD for only Windows 7 and my Games. I plan to install all other applications on my hard drive therefore I am trying to change the default software installation path from C:ProgramFiles to E:ProgramFiles. I have been following Microsoft's tutorial that says to change the key found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion but that did not work as I am still getting the original installation path.

I have a computer with three partitions, the first with 100GB exclusively to Windows 7 (already installed), a partition for applications and another partition for personal files (photos, text, music, movies, etc.). I wonder how to configure the location of "My Documents", so that all users have only their personal files on drive of personal files. In Windows Explorer changed in each of the users the location of the Documents, Music, Video and Pictures.
- After changed the location of the folders above, there is still the same folders in C:users , and there are user settings that are there defined, eg Desktop, in C:Users. Is there any way to move all settings and folders to another drive?
- Is there any way to do this operation automatic? for future users I will have to repeat the same operation, how can I indicate that all future users will have their settings and documents specified in this specific drive?
I installed some applications and found that some applications did not demand that the location where it was set to be installed the application, having been installed in C:users and C:Program Files, intended that all applications (except for windows and Office) were installed in drive applications. How do I specify that this is the default drive for installation applications? Keeping the installations of Windows + Office in this drive. Applications installed by the administrator are available for all users or must be given access to other users ? How done? In the drive file, which should contain the users and shared files, meant that each user only gets access their documents and shared. Where and how can make this configuration?

I am trying to set my default file save location to my Desktop. I searched the web and found solutions but I must be doing something wrong. For instance, I recently saved a Notepad file to My Documents / example_folder. Then I thought I had set the default to Desktop by the following:Start > [my_username] > Documents > Properties, highlighting Desktop, clicking "Set save location" so that the checkmark is at Desktop, clicking Apply, clicking OK.So the next time I save a Notepad file, it defaults to the last folder I saved in ( example_folder ), not Desktop. How do I get the default Save File to be Desktop?

I have two drives on this laptop, which came with it when I bought it. It's a C: and D: drive. My D: drive is much larger than my C: - I have 350 GB on my D: drive, but whenever I download or save something - and many times it's done automatically - it wants to save to my C: drive, which is almost out of space. I wind up having to manually move over files from C to D before I can even save something in order to free up space. I'd like to change settings somehow to where whenever I save something, it's saved to my larger D: drive.

How to I change the default save location of any saved file from C drive to D drive? How to delete current user and program folders on my C drive? Info:I am trying to tidy up my computer and need some assistance with default save locations.I have 2 drives, A 60gb SSD (c:drive) and 1TB standard HDD (d drive). I have my OS on the C drive. I currently have 12gigs of information between two default folders named programs and user. Also when I download, files automatically go to c drive/users/andrew, I get no say in the choice, I want all files going to D drive. All I want to do is remove them from my C drive and have the default locations for any file saved to be to the D drive. This is because I only want select programs, i.e the ones I use regularly to be be on the much faster SSD c drive.[CODE]

Previous versions of Windows had a "sticky" default file "save as" subdirectory. e.g. when saving a group of photos from an email to a particular subdirectory you only had to point to that subdir in the first save. subsequent saves would by default go to that same subdir. In Win 7, everytime I do a "save as" for a picture (jpg, bmp, etc.) the default subdir is the PICTURE LIBRARY subdir. Is there a way to make Win7 remember the last subdir saved to so that you don't have to drill down through multiple subdir to get to the last subdir you accessed?

I'd like to use Teracopy for all copying etc. But after moving to 7 from xp it's giving me these errors. I have Win 7 Pro 64-bit. I copy from network drive for which I have read and write permissions as windows' own copy works fine. But with teracopy I immediately get error "Open error: The system cannot find the path specified". I'm trying to copy, not move, a folder with several subfolders from a network drive into local C:. I have administrator privileges. It seems that Teracopy somehow doesn't have even read permission for the network drive. Taking ownership of the network drive (samba share) is not possible.

It seems all my applications are acting up so I have to use a separate computer. I know its not a virus since I never accessed the internet but all my applications went hay-wire, if I double click for example: notepad, it tries to open up internet explorer then shuts that down and asks me to run or save the file application, either choice I make causes the screen requesting those two options to reappear over and over. It all started when I made my falloutnewvegas.exe try to open with the falloutnewvegaslauncher which was the only one allowing the game to launch. so after that every application has a internet explorer icon in the middle of it with a blank page.

computer, as I am not familiar with Windows 7. When he attempts to open an application (any application) it opens an "Open With" window with only IE 8 and Word Pad as the only recommended programs. He's figured a PITA work around by right clicking the application icon and selecting "Run as Administrator" and then it opens after clicking through the security window. My initial thought was that his account was somehow changed from an Administrator account to a standard account, but that proved incorrect.I'm thinking it's some virus or malware that's causing this, but I see no other apparent signs of infection (i.e. degradation in performance) and he is protected by a current Antivirus (Eset), so I'm also thinking there may be some corruption of his system files, but like I said, I'm a novice where Windows 7 is concerned.

How can i make IE9 save web pages in a default format So, anyways, is there a registry hack anyone has made for IE 9 that can force IE 9 to stop choosing mht as the default format? I am sick, have been for years, of switching it to htm. It's also noteable that more webpages on IE are able to saved in mht form, rather than htm (and firefox can save any ANY page in either format). It's as if Bill Gates had a mht fetish and decided we should all go by his ways.I'm using 64 bit windows.
