Jul 30, 2011I need to connect to a DNS Server over the internet. I have tried setting the DNS as the server IP but I really don't know what I'm doing when it comes to this. The server is running Server 2008.

PS3 Connecting To Media Server On PC
Apr 11, 2010I am trying to connect PS3 to Media Server. I have already established a wireless connection for PS3 updates etc...but cannot connect to Media Center. The system recognizes my home PC network, I am able to go to all the Playstation sites etc.. but I keep getting the following error message when trying to share files from the PC:"Access to the Media Server is not allowed, it is possible that the system name for this PS3 system,", has not been registered." Check the settings for the Media Server."I have seen such as thing as a Media Center Extender referred to for the XBox 360, but not the PS3. Is there one? Do I have to purchase something else? I am trying to use the PS3 to access my PC for Picture and Music files.

I download the install files, program runs, asks me for login info, I enter the login info and I get, can not connect to our login server error.I run the same program at work on windows xp and I have no problem. I ran another program on windows 7 and I get the same error, can not connect.I shut down all firewalls. I disabled vpn, not running - using main proxy.Used different modes in windows 7 - windows xp, windows vista. Nothing seems to work.Do I need to shut somthing off or turn somthing on? it seems that I cant connect to outside program servers (their login).

Oct 16, 2009Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / Windows 7 mix) and file / print sharing.
I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.
(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).
The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.
I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".
I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.
It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).
I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.
Incidentally as a HOME server there are some considerations that you might want to do to make it more like a Desktop OS than a pure server for example add multi-media to it.

Missing Dns Server, Missing Rpc Server No Internet?
Jul 16, 2012i have a 2006 acer laptop that just recently decided not to get onto the internet. it will connect to the network but no internet. i have looked at more forums than i can count but to no avail. i will try to list the problems/symptoms but i am not familiar with programming language and don't know exactly what all the command prompts are suppoed to achieve and the like.-isatap ipv6 adapter is not working (some people say it does'nt matter but???)-ip address starts with 169-ipconfig /release and release6 does not workbecause "an address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint"-ipconfig /flushdns does not work because "function failed during execution"-cannot displaydns because "dns cache is unavailable"-cannot registerdns because "rpc server is unavailable"-checked my services and found some dependant ones that i could not manually start ERROR1075: DNS client service, tcp/ip netbios helper, routing and remote access, internetconnection sharing (ics). all failed to start with the same error code 1075-ERROR 10022- netlogon service-tried "netsh int ip reset" but reset echo request failed. "access denied". i am the admin for this computer. it worked the first time i tried it with no errors. now i get the failed echo message.
-cannot setclassid "as know adapter is in a state permissable for this action"-i saw something about the dhcp-read on one forum that people were having trouble after deleting norton(symantc) programs. i have deleted norton programs and think i got all of them (how to be sure?)-netsh winsock reset successfully-tried regrepair, regseeker, and a few of those "free download" programs that say they will fix your problems after you register/purchase them. i figure if the computer can stop working so easily i can get it to start as easily. maybe that's naivety speaking.-i have scanned my cpu for viruses (naturally) with 3-4 different programs (maybe norton would have found something).clean-thought it might have something to do with the registery since i had a nasty virus everal months ago that i think changed it somehow.-of course my system restore points are dated after this problem occured.-i bought the computer at staples and it did not come with a windows startup disc.
i can't think of any more though i know i've tried more than is listed. the dns and rpc servers seem to be the main coulprits but how do i fix that? also possibly the norton issue? i've read so many forums i'm seeing triple and everyone seems to suggest the same things. i've tried them so many times (to no avail). i've even changed the network adapters ipv6 and ipv4 adresses to 208.67.222.222 with the alternate. nothing. there has to be something i'm overlooking but what

I want to connect all of them to a common printer through the port. Both the computers on win xp have been connected successfully but the other two on win 7 I am unable to connect, seems some patch is required.

Jun 29, 2012I'm not sure if this is a Windows 7 problem or a Dell problem. My last 2 laptops were Gateway and I never had this issue, but I'm finding that A LOT of people are having this issue and no one seems to be able to help. I click on "find album info" to update my music library and the window pops up, but not much else. The little globe in the top left corner spins for a few seconds and my hourglass shows up until I move my cursor, but that's it. Just a blank white page.My browser of choice is Chrome, but I'm sure IE is default for this task.
1. I've made sure [URL] is listed in my trusted zone in internet options.
2. I've turned off wmp in "turn on or off features," rebooted and turned it back on again.
3. I've made sure in wmp I allow internet to replace missing info by going to organize - options - library
4. I never have "work offline" checked - ever - but I checked just to make sure.
5. I'm not 100% positive, but I'm sure my firewall settings are okay.
This has been driving me crazy for weeks. I really miss my Gateway that ran Vista because the player was a lot better and I miss the advance tag editor. And my last Gateway ran Windows 7 but I never ran into this problem. I'm wondering if this is a Dell problem. I just got this about a month ago and the 1st thing I tried to do was install Chrome because I abhor IE. But IE wouldn't let me download Chrome. Finally I found the .exe file on my last pc and was able to install that way. Could these issues be related? Maybe it's IE9.Also, some people get a script error when they click "update album info," but I (and a few others) just get a blank window.

I have a TV that I want to hook this laptop up to, so that we can view my video files on a bigger screen - but I've found that my laptop is displaying in PAL format - while the TV must have it in NTSC. (My main reason for doing this was to watch videos from HBO GO on it) I was able to get the hook up right and it does work; however, what is happening is that every once in a while, the picture on the TV screen disappears and it shifts back to my laptop screen. This lasts for about two or three seconds, then it shifts back to the TV screen. This does not appear to be happening at regular intervals; sometimes it happens ten times in a few minutes, sometimes it goes several minutes without happening.

Mar 1, 2011I have a Windows 7 workstation that people connect to remotely via LogMeIn.I recently decided to move it to my home LAN, because it has faster Internet than work LAN. My home LAN has many personal computers on it, with file and printer sharing enabled. Most of these shares are not password protected for convenience.So the problem is that this workstation is able to see and connect to personal computers. I do not want this. I've temporarily password protected as many shares as I could, but it's not a permanent solution because it's a big family, and there are many computers, and I probably missed some. Unfortunately I can't use that Windows 7 homegroup sharing feature because more than half of the computers are Linux or Macs or Windows XP.I've researched the ports used by Windows File sharing, and made an Access Control policy in my router to block IP and Port ranges specifically for this workstation, to try and prevent it from discovering my other computers, but it did not help. I suspect this network access policy only applies to IPs and Port ranges on the Internet, not on the LAN. (btw router is D-Link DGL-4300)I'm looking for some solution either by tweaking settings in the workstation to make it blind, or making some changes with the networking gear.

Jun 16, 2011All my PCs and devices map drives to an XP machine with 12TB or storage. It's getting a bit dated and I have been looking at WHS 2011.
I will be testing to see if it will run the applications that XP does (Coldfusion, Firebird, OpenDNS updater etc). If they are OK I might be leaning towards actually moving towards WHS.
I have 6 x 2TB drives installed. I notice that every time WHS formats a drive it leaves 19mb free at the end. That's annoying but not a show stopper.
I would like to format the C: drive only then install WHS clean, leaving all of the other drives intact. Will that work? I dont have about 9TB free anywhere else to back up all that stuff, so a "suck it and see" approach might be rather disastrous.
I've also been looking around for some "lights-out" type software (Not manageengine central - it doesn't work, and has some major design flaws). Something that would download updates, and let me review them before approving them to be pushed out to the clients. I've been seaching to see if WHS supports that natively, but I guess either I can't find anything or it's not a feature of WHS...
