Can Windows 7 Explorer "Filter By" Feature Be Disabled
May 24, 2012
Since I haven't been able to find anything that directly refers to this, I'm taking a shot in the wild blue here, in case maybe someone here knows at least enough to point me in the right direction.
I am a long-time Windows XP user. But I have a couple of newer computers (including a laptop) that came with Windows 7 installed; the manufacturer does not support XP on these newer computers. Without drivers for the newer hardware, XP is not an option.
There are many things I don't like about Windows 7, but I've been able to overcome most of them, either by settings changes, or with "Classic Shell" (Welcome to Classic Shell) which allows users to change the Windows 7 UI to be much more like XP.
But there is one problem I haven't been able to overcome, which is the thing circled in red below:
I think it is called a "filter" popup, but I'm not sure.
The problem I have is, I never use this, but it sure gets in the way of what I do use, specifically resizing the column widths or moving the columns. In WinXP, there is a lot more leeway when you select the right side of a column. In Windows 7 (due to this infernal thing) you have to select it much more precisely, otherwise that filter thing pops up instead.
When I'm browsing local/network drives in Windows 7, the Search box (upper right in any Explorer window) only offers two filters "Date Modified" and "Size".
The "Add a Search Filter" is grayed out.
Here's some info on search filters that are available to be added-- but I haven''t figured out how to add them yet:
Date Created: Searches according to when the file was created. You can select the date (or a range of dates) from a mini-calendar that appears.
Kind: Search for files of a specific type as selected from the drop-down list that appears when you click the Kind option.
Type: Searches based on certain file types by extension, such as .pdf, .jpg, or .docx.
Name: Searches by filename. You can enter all or part of the filename in the search text box after the Name filter.
Tags: This filter lets you search for a file by the tags assigned to it. Enter one or more tags after the Tags filter in the Search text box.
Authors: Search for file by a particular author. Enter an author name after the Authors filter in the Search text box or select the name from the drop-down list that appears. (This filter is called Artists when searching audio files.)

In windows XP I remember I could specify whatever I remember of a file and I could get straight to the file I was looking for, I could only remember a range of dates, an approx size, tow or three file extension... and thats it.. the search in windows 7 is good, but only for looking files that you know are there and you just want to save time scrolling down until get it. I have been in this situation various times, but I cant stand it anymore
I am looking for an audio file (a recording of a conversation). I don't remember the name (probably the default name the recorder put on it [there fore must be hundreds of files with the same names but in different folders). The specs I remember from the file, or what I am sure it is are:
Size between 1mb and 20mb Create and or modification date: between 2008 and 2010 File type: wav, mp3, qcp or amr (i don't remember if i convert it, if i edited it... )
In windows xp I would have found the file, but in this windows 7 something CANT be so simple and when it is forced to be, it doesn't work properly. When I try to use the "So Super duper" simple all mighty space for searches in the upper right corner... it only give me options for (despite the name itself ...) "modified date" and "size". How do I chose a range of date, a range of size various fiile type? Why its so complicated in windows 7?
I just got my Windows 7 upgrade kit in the mail today. When I got to the Compatibility Report, it told me this:
"These devices might not work properly after the upgrade. Before upgrading, we recommend updating the drivers for these devices. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers", or go to the device manufacturer's website to search for updated drivers." Keyboard Filter And
"These programs might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend uninstalling these programs before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel, and search for "uninstall a program". HP MediaSmart Music/Photo/Video * iTunes (Please deauthorize computer prior to upgrade) Agatha Christie - Death on the Nile * Bejeweled 2 Deluxe * Chuzzle Deluxe * Slingo Deluxe * Wedding Dash * Zuma Deluxe *
I'm afraid to continue the upgrade because I don't know what's going to happen or how it's going to affect the programs and devices. Should I just go ahead and uninstall everything listed in the second message? And how do I update the driver for the Keyboard Filter? I don't really know what I'm doing.
Win 7 lacks a search filter in the search bar of windows explorer. The only way to search with filters is to find the keywords such as "kind: videos" etc. XP had a much better search than Win7
I have been reading other threads about the instructions to update the driver for the "keyboard filter" but I didn't feel adequately that they applied to me. So, my basic question is, do I absolutely need to do this to have a working keyboard when I finish?
I am trying to upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium. When I attempt to install it. it keeps telling me that the "Keyboard Filter" might not work properly. What is that? And what does it do?

I have a Gateway AMD laptop running Win 7 Home Premium and it will not recognize a couple of my USB devices. After doing some research, I read that it can be caused by AMD's USB (Audio) Filter Driver and that I need to disable or uninstall the driver.
The driver does not appear anywhere in the Device Manager; but, I did find it in the C:/Program Files (x86)/AMD folder.
The problem I'm facing is that I cannot uninstall it. If I go to Control Panel and pull up the Programs, it does not appear there.
Can someone please tell me how I can uninstall this driver?

I have used Thunderbird for years with no problem but lately I have been trying to remove the message Pain (sorry Pane) from view and also the filter Bar but as soon as I leave and go back in its on show again I have tried uninstalling and re installing without success?

Okay, I was playing with the settings of the Live Family Safety Filters and I cant seem to get rid of this pop up message when i start my computer. See attachment. I click ok and it goes away PLUS I have no problems surfing the iternet. There is some inconsistency cause I shouldnt be able to suf the internet as the error messg states.
There should be a much simpler way to turn this off.
By the way i am the administrator and sole user of this computer.
I have been searching everywhere on this forum and others in trying to fix this. I have a 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate machine. I am trying to add .Net 3.5 from the install windows feature section. It fails and after a reboot it reverts back to not installed. Some things I have tried. I completely removed all .Net installs, I ran the .Net cleanup utility
I use sometimes outlook to retrieve my emails but all spam email are also fetched, even after I mark them as Junk email in outlook. So I am wondering why the filter antispam in outlook (junk mail blocker) is not efficient?
Running Win 7 64 bit and I noticed that my AddRemove Windows feature box is blank. I ran the windows readiness tool and tried system restore to no avail.
HomeGroup is a new feature introduced by Windows 7 which aims to simplify the process of sharing content and devices on your home network. In older versions of Windows, sharing content was a tedious and sometimes painful process, especially for home users. By using HomeGroups, you can now access all shared content in your home network with just one click. I know it sounds to good to be true. That's why, in this article, I will show what a HomeGroup is, how it works, how to create one and join your home computers to it. Also, I'll show how to change the password of your HomeGroup and how to retrieve it in case you forgot it.
Libraries are one of the coolest features introduced by Windows 7. They can help people organize their files and folders very efficiently. By using libraries, you can easily build a system so that you can always find what you want in seconds. Not only that, but you can also sort, tag or edit files and folders with just a few clicks. In this article I will explain what libraries are, show how they work and how to create new ones. Also, I'll show how to add new folders to a library, how to modify its properties and how to delete a library.
I'm not exactly sure how the Backup and Restore feature in Windows 7 work. Does it backup only your operating system and important processes and certain programs, or does it also backup the data on your harddrive such as music, movies etc? Is this feature essentially the same as creating a recovery partition/disk ?
Using the Windows 7 Backup and Restore feature I made a back up of my Documents folder and my Desktop (the only two things on my computer I care about). I did not check off the option "Include a system image of Drives: ---". After the backup completed I clicked on the JOSH-PC (backup file) the window saying "Choose an option below for the selected backup" came up. If I click "Restore my files from this backup" will it automatically overwrite my current Desktop and Documents folder with what is in the back up or will I have a choice as to where on my computer these files are restored to?
Microsoft has killed the Sidebar in Windows 7, but the Gadgets it contained live on. This tutorial will show you how to add Gadgets to the Windows 7 Desktop and how to resize it.
