Recently, I was messing around with my HDD's partitions in GParted. I resized my Windows 7 partition and made a new NTFS for Windows XP, and a new ext2 for Puppy Linux. I installed the GRUB Bootloader and all my partitions booted fine off of it except for Windows 7. I later found out this has something to do with the Master Boot Record and that I should install GRUB and then install Windows 7.
I was okay with this for a while, but Windows XP couldnt boot many applications from the Windows 7 partition because I have it's x64. I eventually realized that I hadn't made my Windows XP partition large enough (only 3 gig) for anything I wanted to do with it. After a few days, I just deleted the Windows XP and Puppy Linux partitions and was back to having just my Windows 7 partition. I was hoping everything would be magically better, but when I restarted my computer, the BIOS told me a "disk read error" had occurred and "press any key to restart".
I put in a Puppy Linux Live CD and opened up GParted again. GParted showed me that my HDD was now just one big block of Unallocated space. Then I looked in the lower-left corner of the screen and saw that I still had 4 partitions (sda1, sda2, sda3, sda4). sda1 is now my Windows 7 partition, sda2 is now my Windows XP partition, and for some reason sda3 and sda4 are both HP Recovery partitions.
I tried everything I could think of to save myself. I popped in the Windows 7 Upgrade Disk (I had been running Vista before) and tried the Recovery tools included with it, but the Recovery didn't recognize any partitions on my HDD at all. I ran a Command Prompt and tried all the options in bootrec fixmbr, but two of them didnt work and the other two replied "Element not found". Then I tried sfc /scannow, but that told me I had to be running Windows. I booted back into Puppy, ran GParted, and tried to make a new partition, but GParted told me that doing so would erase ALL data on the HDD. There's probably some more options I tried, but I can't remember them right now.
Can anyone help me out? I feel like I'm close to just backing up my personal files, wiping the HDD, and starting over. Only problem is I don't have anywhere to backup 150 gigs.

I'm doing an upgrade from 32 bit XP to 32 bit Windows 7 on a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop. I've run the upgrade advisor. The desktop has 2 hard drives and a RAID controller configured in Stripe(RAID 0). I bought the Windows 7 Home Premium family pack (3 installs) and did the XP to Windows 7upgrade on two laptops; so I think the disk is okay. When I start the upgrade for a clean install on the desktop I get a "f1 to retry boot f2 for setup" message from the BIOS indicating that it does not seem to recognize the Windows 7 install disk in the CD. I've check the CD reader and it seems to read the files without a problem. I can start the Windows 7 install within XP but that does not work for the clean install, I need to start from the boot. There is a second DVD ROM drive on the system but that does not work either.

I have purchased a new 1 TB WD HDD (internal) and have connected it internally in my PC to my motherboard using the spare power and SATA cables within my PC. (This is the second internal disk ) I booted on the PC (windows 7 (64 bit)) - the new HDD was detected and i continued to format the disk using quick format option with NTFS (allocation cluster size 4096 bytes). I have not made partitions on this and therefore this is essentialy one large 1 TB partition.
I then loaded all the data that i wished to back up from the 3 partitions of my older existing 500 GB disk as the purpose of acquiring the new 1 TB was exactly this. Till now all is fine.
3 days later i wished to transfer some of backed up data files (on my new unpartitioned but formatted new 1 TB disk) to my Toshiba laptop (Win 7 64 bit). So i discconnect the new 1TB disk from the PC and attach it using a USB 2.0 TO SATA/IDE cable to the usb port of my Toshiba laptop. The disk is detected but a message pops up saying that the disk is unformatted and the disk management tool in Windows shows this as a basic disk (RAW).
In case you'd like to know what cable i am referring to - here it is Brando USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Cable
PS: I have tried formating the disk via the USB cable (as requested by my laptop message) but then when i attach it back as an internal disk in my PC it (the PC) detects it as an unformatted RAW disk (the vice versa problem) and requests me to format the same!
What i want to know is how to make this HDD usable both as an internal disk drive as well an externally connected USB drive? What i am doing wrong?
PS: Many years ago i have done the same without any problem with an IDE HDD
PPS: I have done the same exercise using win XP PC but i get the same problem
Is it a bios setting, OS issue, partition table issue or what?

I have recently accidentally converted my disk from basic to dynamic. I realised that doing this is bad because it does not allow me to install other operating systems on other partitions. After browsing google for a couple days i came across that you can change your disk by using a hex editor called HxD. I thought this was great so I downloaded HxD. I continued to the next step "Go to the offset 01C2 and change to a 7" here there should be a 47 (Dynamic disk)...... It was a zero (0).

I recently cloned my 500Gb HDD to a 750 Gb drive. When I nstalled the clone it shows a capacity of 443Gb in the computer view and 687Gb in the Data Mgt view. I'm aware of the reasons for the missing 63 Gb but What I'm confused about is the missing 240 Gb between the 2 views. The clone software mfg tells me the that the Data Mgt view is correct and the clone process was successful

I have an eSATA drive that has stopped functioning properly. I was trying unsuccessfully to install some completely unrelated software when I noticed that my eSATA drive was presenting differently. Under My Computer it now said that the drive was empty and there were four drives that appeared that said "Removable Disk (G)", "Removable Disk (H)", "Removable Disk (I)", and "Removable Disk (J)". When I select my eSATA drive, it says 'folder empty'. When I select one of the removable disk drives it says "Please insert a disk into removable disk (?). Whenever I reboot the computer with the eSATA drive disconnected, all five disk drives go away. I don't remember changing any settings or anything like that. One thing is odd that in device manager, the eSATA drive comes up as a SCSI drive. The device manager shows it as "WDC WD10EADS-65M2B1 SCSI Disk Device", but it is actually a "WDC WD500F032".

I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).
Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERSCLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

Ive been running Vista for a couple of years, until last night when the system decided to pack up and lose/corrupt half the sys32 folder. I'm using RAID-0 for my hard disks, so i ran the RAID setup, deleted the array and created a new one, striped, just like the previous, and then tried to run a Windows 7 setup i'd picked up from the office. Only problem is, even though i've been through the BIOS and told it to boot from disk as first priority, all i get is a screen that says "Windows is loading files", followed by a few seonds of "Starting Windows" before i get an error screen informing me that CI.dll is missing or corrupt (0xc0000098). My only two options from here are to run Windows Memory Diagnostic or try and boot again from the Windows Setup dvd, which i've tried in safe mode and every other available advanced boot option.
Edit: I just tried to run an XP setup disk i have lying around to see if i had the same problem, and i got an error saying that no hard drive was detected on my system. I checked the BIOS and under 'Standard CMOS Features' the SATA channels are all listed as empty, with only my IDE cd/dvd drive being recognised.

I'm in a bit of a pickle here. My CD drive won't allow me to boot from CDs anymore, for whatever reason. I have 2 partitions on my hard drive and I'm wondering if it's possible to format the main partition by copying the windows setup files to my secondary and then somehow running them from there, whilst wiping the main one. I really don't want to reinstall without formatting, but right now I have no other option.

Yesterday , randomly , when I turned on the computer I saw nothing but a black screen. It wasn't the black screen of death , looked like a windows black screen but it just wasn't displaying anything. Its almost like windows is operating normally in the background , its just not showing me. When I put the disk in it comes up occasionally and works fine , but when I shut down and turn it back on its back to the same ole thing.
I have windows 7 home premium , 32-bit. I read somewhere that I may need to check the boot order , but I have no idea how to do any of this.

[code] When I boot from it after the "Starting Windows" Screen I get BSOD and it says "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA".This is what I thought was important from the BSOD all the middle text says is disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing, and I have no idea how to do that and no idea if that would even fix this. Can this be caused from a faulty hard drive or is this a problem with the install disk itself.

I've recently built my new gaming pc. When I try to boot the windows 7 disk, it says, " reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" I've gone into the BIOS to make it boot from the disk drive, but to no avail. I'd love some help on this. I'm also quite the PC noob, this being my first build.

Randomly, my computer is no longer able to boot from my OCZ Agility 3 SSD. By randomly, I mean it was working just fine this morning, but no longer. I can't remember if I changed or updated anything.
Well I then went and inserted the Windows 7 repair disk. A list pops up saying to select my OS, but nothing is listed. I selected load drivers, and I'm able to navigate to the ssd successfully and view all of the files. I even plugged it in to the computer I am using now and was able to back up the more important documents in case I will need to do a reinstall. (I would rather not though). The repair utility doesn't fix the problem, and I navigated this forum and many others trying to find similar problems to mine.
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
AMD Phenom II X4 965
Galaxy GeForce GTX 460
16 GBs Corsair RAM
I do have two other hard drives on the system that I use for general programs and another for raw video storage. They are disconnected now, so I don't see how they would affect the problem.

I have a server (HP Proliant ML350 G5) that has a hard disk with Windows 7 Enterprise and Ubuntu (I'll talk about that on UbuntuForums, though). I recently acquired a Dell Dimension 9150. I moved the hard disk from the server to the Dell. Now Windows won't boot. It gets as far as the OS selection. I select Windows 7 from the OS choices. I don't even get the Starting Windows screen. If I try Safe Mode, I get the driver loading screen, but nothing more than that. When I try Startup Repair, it hangs at "Loading Windows Files".I cannot re-install windows because of programs and admin tools found on that hard disk.
