NTFS Formatted 1TB Disk Shows As RAW When Connected Via Usb
Nov 28, 2012
I have purchased a new 1 TB WD HDD (internal) and have connected it internally in my PC to my motherboard using the spare power and SATA cables within my PC. (This is the second internal disk ) I booted on the PC (windows 7 (64 bit)) - the new HDD was detected and i continued to format the disk using quick format option with NTFS (allocation cluster size 4096 bytes). I have not made partitions on this and therefore this is essentialy one large 1 TB partition.
I then loaded all the data that i wished to back up from the 3 partitions of my older existing 500 GB disk as the purpose of acquiring the new 1 TB was exactly this. Till now all is fine.
3 days later i wished to transfer some of backed up data files (on my new unpartitioned but formatted new 1 TB disk) to my Toshiba laptop (Win 7 64 bit). So i discconnect the new 1TB disk from the PC and attach it using a USB 2.0 TO SATA/IDE cable to the usb port of my Toshiba laptop. The disk is detected but a message pops up saying that the disk is unformatted and the disk management tool in Windows shows this as a basic disk (RAW).
In case you'd like to know what cable i am referring to - here it is Brando USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Cable
PS: I have tried formating the disk via the USB cable (as requested by my laptop message) but then when i attach it back as an internal disk in my PC it (the PC) detects it as an unformatted RAW disk (the vice versa problem) and requests me to format the same!
What i want to know is how to make this HDD usable both as an internal disk drive as well an externally connected USB drive? What i am doing wrong?
PS: Many years ago i have done the same without any problem with an IDE HDD
PPS: I have done the same exercise using win XP PC but i get the same problem
Is it a bios setting, OS issue, partition table issue or what?

I have an external drive that does backups of files for me on a weekly basis through windows, needless to say the backup was getting bigger so I decided to go for a better data storage solution and formatted the external into NTFS. While doing this I also decided to format a USB key into NTFS.THE external drive format took hours, four or so hooked up via firewire. I blamed the issue on the drive and ignored it for the next couple of weeks. The backups didn't work properly they stopped halfway according to Windows even if I let them run 12+ HOURS. Before I formatted it took only 2-3 hours for the backup. I blamed the entire issue on the drive, maybe time to replace it, but I didn't have time to mess with it cause it was simply annoying me.Didn't use the key until tonight. Remember it is formatted as NTFS also. I started to copy a movie file to it, 700mb, it stopped at nearly 89% with 5 seconds left and did not move one bit. I hit cancel and it stayed on the cancel screen for 10 minutes with no resolve. At this point I tried to open a firefox window and it was not responding.......so what did I do I pulled the key and just like that Firefox window popped up and all was well. At that point it hit me, but the external storage solutions are NTFS, could it be my Mobo? Surely not!, Oh Microsoft you make me sad again....Just like with Vista. I reformatted the USB key back to FAT32, transferred a larger 1.4gig file in about 2-3 minutes and had no hangup issues. I can't blame the issue on the mobo especially since it relates to both USB 2.0 connection and the FireWire has the same issue. I guess windows 7 64bit doesn't like external NTFS connections. My windows appears up to date!

I have had no trouble in the past setting up permissions on a NTFS formatted USB drive using XP. I am able to set everyone to have only read access and myself to have full rights. The process is as follows:
- Remove all from the list except everyone.
- add myself as a user with full control.
- Go to advanced options for everyone and disable write access, and enable read access.
- Deny takes over allow, so that's all good.
- Eject USB everyone's happy .
In Windows 7 this is not the case, after formatting the USB to NTFS and going to permissions, that is where the problems start. At first the only group that has permissions as default is everyone, if I change any of these permissions I get access denied even though I am the owner because I formatted the drive. So I ignore and continue to add myself as full control. I get access denied! I then move on to making it so that everyone has read access but no write access. again access denied! What is the same process ins XP is not the same in 7, why?
It seems every time I make an amend to a permission in 7 is says access denied even though I am the admin and the owner. Tried this also on the hidden admin account and I still have the same problem. My guess is in windows 7 everyone actually means everyone, including admin and myself, so even though adding myself as an additional user it still wont allow, unlike XP where adding a user seems to overwrite everyone.

I have an external hard drive that was formatted in NTFS on an XP machine not too long ago. It is a 160 GB Western Digital. It has been working great on windows 7 for a couple of weeks. Just today it won't let me access the drive and it is telling me that I will need to format the drive before I can use it. I have so much important data on here. I am really worried about losing it all. Why is this happening?

Formatted Windows 7 loads shows Win 7 Logo and Screen blank with cursor
I have an Acer laptop 4551, got hit by nasty viruses and on top no restore intact.
I formatted the hard drive which gave me an error 83% and stopped. Today I turned on laptop to install fresh genuine Windows 7, I popped in the DVD and done everything in BIOS selected Boot from CD. Everything was Ok I hit enter to Continue then comes the Windows 7 logo and after that a blank black screen with Cursor, that's it! I done that some 5/6 times but no luck.

Laptop is connected to wifi but still shows yellow star and grey bars? Title says it all. I've reinstall the drivers, changed the settings in the registry editor that someone on another forum suggested, delete all the wifi accounts and rebooted the computer. No errors in device manager, the Windows wifi connection software is the only one running. Internet is working but it wont allow me to setup a vpn. I've rebooted everything.
I just noticed that no matter what wireless network I connect to it still does this. Also, I connected to a wireless network that this laptop never connects to and it never asks what kind of network it is. It just sets it as a public network. My other laptop connects to both fine.

I made a backup to external hard drive of my mother's computer, before a conversion to Windows 7.At home in Austin I have transferred the folders, files to my dual boot Vista/Windows 7. I notice that even after taking ownership of the backup, that looking over permissions I am the owner, also the Administrator of my computer, but I need to find a way to have the inherited from apply to my account, as it is clear that not all folders and files are visible.Does anyone know what I need to do so that the entire hard drive has permissions for me applied to all folders and files on that specific hard drive? It is not the boot or system hard drve. I want to make sure I am not just the owner, but any inherited permissions apply to all folders and fles with an NTFS file system.I used to have some script several years ago when I applied this to servers I was working with. I just need to do this with one hard drive and Windows 7.

I have a triple boot system: XP 32 bit, XP 64 bit, Win7 Pro 64 bit, each on a separate partition on separate hard drives. I can backup each of the XP OS partitions with a program I wrote that basically does a file and folder copy to a folder in a spare partition on one of the hard drives. The copy program I wrote tries to preserve time stamp and short file name info, otherwise, it's just a file and folder copy program. I use windiff to verify after a backup (or restore). For a restore, I can quick format a partition and copy the files back (using the program I wrote).
I tried doing the same with the Win 7 OS partition, backup, quick format, restore, but some of the information (metadata?) is lost. All of the actual data is there, and windiff doesn't show any differences, and Win 7 boots up, but then there are issues. ATI video driver catalyst control center fails to run (don't recall error message). The publisher information for many (or most or all) of the programs is lost, causing User Acess Control dialog box to appear anytime I tried to run a program, which should be Microsoft, but shows up as unknown. Internet Explorer 8 will state that a program has corrupted the default search provider repeatedly (even after selecting one).
So something is different between Win 7 NTFS and Win XP NTFS, or I need to enhance my copy program to copy addtional file information when doing the copies. If I get the time, I'll try a drag and drop from windows explorer in XP to see if that makes any difference. So currently I'm stuck using Win 7 system image backup for the Win 7 OS partition (it also images the C partition which contains the boot files like bootmgr).

I have recently accidentally converted my disk from basic to dynamic. I realised that doing this is bad because it does not allow me to install other operating systems on other partitions. After browsing google for a couple days i came across that you can change your disk by using a hex editor called HxD. I thought this was great so I downloaded HxD. I continued to the next step "Go to the offset 01C2 and change to a 7" here there should be a 47 (Dynamic disk)...... It was a zero (0).

I'm aware of the reasons for the missing 63 Gb but What I'm confused about is the missing 240 Gb between the 2 views. I have an eSATA drive that has stopped functioning properly. I was trying unsuccessfully to install some completely unrelated software when I noticed that my eSATA drive was presenting differently. Under My Computer it now said that the drive was empty and there were four drives that appeared that said "Removable Disk (G)", "Removable Disk (H)", "Removable Disk (I)", and "Removable Disk (J)". When I select my eSATA drive, it says 'folder empty'. When I select one of the removable disk drives it says "Please insert a disk into removable disk (?). Whenever I reboot the computer with the eSATA drive disconnected, all five disk drives go away. I don't remember changing any settings or anything like that. One thing is odd that in device manager, the eSATA drive comes up as a SCSI drive. The device manager shows it as "WDC WD10EADS-65M2B1 SCSI Disk Device", but it is actually a "WDC WD500F032".

I've just used Windows Update to install SP1 on two more or less identical computers with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. On one of the computers only the following error and warning are showing in the event viewer, from around the time the actual installation started (ie immediately after the download completed):Error - Source VSS, Event ID 12305 Task Category None:Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Volume/disk not connected or not found. Error context: DeviceIoControl(\?GLOBALROOTDeviceHarddiskVolumeShadowCopy18 - 000000000.....). Operation:Processing PostFinalCommitSnapshotsContext: Execution Context: System Provider________Warning - Source Ntfs Event ID 57 Task Category (2)The system failed to flush data to the transaction log.Corruption may occur.(end of messages)Both messages showed exactly the same time. System restore shows that a restore point was created at the same time, which suggests that it did manage to create a restore point despite the error.I tried restarting the computer, and it didn't try to run chkdsk (which I would expect it to do if there were any disk errors, and which has been mentioned on other forums). Disk management shows all disks and partitions to be healthy (before and after the restart).

Background:-
System Gigabyte X48T, 4G ram, usual bits. Video
Sata Port 0&1 - Gigaraid 2x 750G Raid 0 - Scsii disk Boot.
Sata ports 2&3, 4&5, 6, - 5x 500G 2TB dynamic GPT Raid 5
Sata Port 7 -1x 750G Roms & software disk.
Rocket Raid Scsii 0_1, 5x1TB in raid 5.
Scsii 0_0, 1x500G JBOD.
Problem is here.
I have been trying to get this system ready to do extensive HD video editing and multimedia work so thumbnails are critical to sorting out 1000's of clips. Vista just doesnt show thumbnails. I have been waiting years for Windows 7.
This system is fast. Boot drive reads at over 160MB/s sec. The 2 Raid 5 arrays can copy to each other at 250MB/s plus (for multi GB files). Interesting HDTach 3.0.1 only shows 160MB's for the Highpoint array.
They will have to fix their software..
In the last few weeks the system had become very flakey - Windows 7 x64 & vista x64 system -video thumbnail display & codec errors etc, windows explorer hangs, system corruption, bad software & codecs.
The boot manager from the latest (Paragon i think) partition manager for windows 7 got stuck on resize partition and it doesnt time out. I want my pc to be always on for remote access..
Anyway the system finally crashed. I lost one of the Raid0 boot disk array IDs when I tried to delete the boot manager. One disk offline and array gone. 60 hours, 400G of newly imported video from 8mm tapes..
So I decided on clean install just windows 7 after I recovered the data on the raid array.
To that end I removed all the other disks, took a single clean disk and installed vista on it.
Then I went to Bios and deleted the GigaRaid array and recreated it with the original 2 disks.
Changed the boot order in Bios to the first Sata.
Back into windows, initialise the GigaRaid array in windows disk management -Do not partition or format it. Load GetBackDataNTFS and
scan and copy all of the data back to the spare space on the new boot disk.
When I was totally happy I had everything back I loaded Windows Disk management and partitioned the GigaRaid into 250G and 1200G. Formatted the only the 1200G and copied on all of the drivers..
I then shutdown and removed the Vista hard disk and restarted with the Windows 7 DVD. Loaded the Gigaraid drivers and proceded to install Windows 7.
On first reboot, error 80xxxx .
Back to setup and disk management. Delete the new 250G partition and let Install do its stuff. So it creates a 100MB "system" as the first partition then 260G for the C drive and installs itself.
Whoo hoooo! it works.
I shutdown and add the GPT array and the single Roms drive.
Into Bios to set the boot to the Scsii Gigaraid & restart and the dynamic array and Roms disk is there.
Shutdown and install the RocketRaid Card with its 5 disks attached.
Back to bios to set Boot to Scsii Gigaraid.
It always puts Sata 0 first.
Or Scsii 0_1 (the RocketRaid).
Boot back into windows and everything is where it should be.
Clean and fast too. Install all of the software I need.
Now I have a nice system. Time to copy the video I recovered onto the Raid5 array.
So I plug the sata cable into the disk and go into the Highpoint management to scan the disk. Come up ok and is visible in windows.
I copy the data over to the raid.
The I decide to see it the computer will reboot back into windows unattended.. Nope! Screen fills with rubbish that looks like Linux. Says changing boot disk, then stops.
I go back into Bios and reset the boot disk back to Scsii 1_0 (GigaRaid)
Reboot and press F12 for the boot menu. Select the last item - GigaRaid.
Boots back into that Linux looking system (says debian).
I disconnect RocketRaid disk 6, Scsii 0_1 and back to bios and set to Scscii 1_0, Gigaraid, reboot back into windows..
Plug the Rocketraid Scsii 1_0 and reboot - back into Linux?
Question is..
1 What is the purpose of the 100MB that windows installed onto the boot disk.
2 how do i find the boot manager that screws the system when I connect a new drive (including USB key).
3 How do I force the boot to the correct disk array regardless of which drives are installed or not.
4. Is there a boot "something" I can install on every disk to point to Scsii Gigaraid

Today my Windows 7 laptop wouldn't boot, returning a persistent Windows Boot Manager error 0xC00000e9. It recommended allowing Windows to start in a diagnostic state, which didn't work. I pulled the hard drive and put it in a USB adapter which I plugged into another Windows 7 system. I was glad to see all the normal directories off the root. When I tried to change directories to UsersFrank to copy off some critical files, it said I didn't have sufficient permission. What I need to do to accomplish this? I thought I was logged in as Administrator on the second system while examining the drive. Later I may try putting the drive back into my laptop and booting off a CD to try to repair the disk, but my highest priority is to get some critical files off the drive as soon as possible.
