Windows 7 Not Booting After Conversion To Dynamic Disk
May 2, 2010
Ive squeezed all my brain juices out to no avail.
Ive been trying to set up software mirrored raid on my two HDs.I setup Win 7 as a clean install and then convert disk 0 to a dynamic disk. After that when i restart my comp, it just wont boot. Im left with the DMI pool data thing and a blinking cursor.

somehow my hard disk partition became dynamic. i formatted system and insttaled windows 7 ultimate in the dynamic disk partition.from then onwards system is not booting. only black screen with cursor on the upper left corner of the black screen.if i am not wrong windows 7 cannot boot with dynamic disk. i will have to go to the disk management and after conversion of dynamic disk to basic disk with deleting all the volumes (data). it is possible to boot with windows 7.but system is not booting...not opening..so i cannot go to disk management.hrad disk is showing some partitions with system reserved.except system reserved all the partitions are showing dynamic. and in only one partition formatting option and installing OS option is coming while i booting system with OS DVD.reinstalltion through OS DVD is possible by booting through OS DVD. but in advanced option repartition option is not coming.the one partition in which i installed OS previously, only in that formatting option is coming.in other partition neither formating option is coming nor extend.

I have recently accidentally converted my disk from basic to dynamic. I realised that doing this is bad because it does not allow me to install other operating systems on other partitions. After browsing google for a couple days i came across that you can change your disk by using a hex editor called HxD. I thought this was great so I downloaded HxD. I continued to the next step "Go to the offset 01C2 and change to a 7" here there should be a 47 (Dynamic disk)...... It was a zero (0).

I have been using computers for a while but just recently started to learn what is really going on. I am having trouble understanding what a dynamic disk is. I have read a lot online but I need a very very simple explanation as I am an older person and a lot of the explanations I read online use technical terms which I also do not understand. I think what I have is a basic disk and I don't understand what a dynamic disk is. Can you have a dynamic disk if you have just a single regular physical disk, and if so what is the advantage.

I have 2 x 750GB HDD's running Windows 7 x64. One of the HDD's contains data the other is blank. Do I have to format the drive with data on it to convert both drives to being a Dynamic Disk? I don't have a backup drive to move the data to whilst I create a Dynamic Disk so hopefully the answer is no?

Last night as I was attempting to install Windows 8 RP to test it out, I decided I would do a dual boot incase I didn't like it. It downloaded, burned fined and I went to make a new partition, and this is where things went south for me. It converted every disk to dynamic once I had created the new disk to install it on and for the life on me I can't get it to convert back to basic, so I'm pretty well screwed if something goes wrong. Things I've done:
1) Attempt system restore - Ok, so I didn't have a restore point created so this is of no help.
2) I followed this guide found here on SevenForums and attempted all 3 methods - nothing worked Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk
3) I downloaed EaseUse Partition master to attempt to change dynamic back to basic, and still a no go.
4) Tried to install Windows 8 again and it would not let me delete the current dynamic disk partitions to start over
5) Tried HP recovery tools to set the computer back to factory condition and it wouldn't work.
Is it possible to delete everything and start over from scratch or will it still be dynamic? At this point, i want a time machine so I can go back before ever attempting to make a dual boot.

I'm trying to create a new disk partition so that I can install Windows 8 (Consumer Preview) on it. However, I'm running into an issue here. When I go to create the partition, I get to the final step and this is what I run into (see image below).I'm thinking of just leaving the space unallocated and formatting it when I do my install of 8, but then I'm afraid that might render my Windows 7 partition unbootable. Will that happen?

I recently took my internal hard drive and bought a casing for it and made it external. But when i connected it to my computer the disk management showed it as invalid dynamic. So i went online, read a bit about basic and dynamic and ways to convert the latter into former. I adopted the method of converting through changing "hex" using "HxD". Now when i changed the '47's to '07' , i got back my three partitions without any data loss one of which was system reserve. I do not know how to get the rest back. cannot loose the data. I have to get the other three back. Total no of partition =6 (including system reserve) No. of partitions recovered = 3 (including system reserve) No

After dual booting my drive, it was suddenly changed to an offline dynamic disk. My problem is, I can turn it back online, but it gives me the status of "errors" I checked around for the past 12 hours, and everything says the same thing, turn it back online (it is) Reactivate it (That command is grayed out) Use Dynamic disk converter 2.1 (Says offline even though CMD says it is online)
Now, I am a bit frustrated, after 6 hours or so, my entire PC crashed, I did nothing special to cause this but hey it did. When I would boot up it would give "error loading OS" I checked all my drives, they're working PERFECTLY fine so I have no idea what is causing this. After I inserted my Windows 7 CD it seems to boot up fine now. I have two separate drives, one to handle my main OS being Windows 7 and the other to handle all my media which is the one that I cannot access anymore.
After reading dozens of articles I cannot find any solid answer that work for my case.
I am using the Windows 7 disk manager not a third party program, also, I have read all the 'help' from the microsoft website there is to deal with this problem. But nothing seems to work.
To help literate a bit more this is what my Disk Manager looks like:
Disk 0 Primary partition
Basic
38 GB
Online
Disk 1
Dynamic
errors
When right clicked on Disk 1 everything is Grayed out except properties, help, and Offline.
I don't know if any of this information will be of any help, I am trying to literate as much as I possibly can and give any evidence that might help.
Anyways, this entire thing has given me a huge headache and I have a huge term paper due x_x...

I initially had 1 500gb dynamic disk, with one partition containing all my documents and windows files. I created a partition in the free space to copy my documents into so I could overwrite Windows keeping my documents intact. However I did not have enough free space for all my documents so after copying over one batch of files I shrunk the windows partition and extended my document partition. I had to repeat this again so I now have three extended document partitions. I then put in the windows CD, formatted the OS Recovery, SYSTEM Reserved and Windows parititions but then was unable to install Windows as it did not recognise any disks. I attempted FixMBR etc but to no avail.
I searched around and saw i may be able to change the sector hex from 42 (dynamic) to 07 (basic), but im wondering whether doing so will preserve the extended partitions i have? So my question is, will changing 42 to 07 preserve the extended partitions. Do I need to repeat for each 42 (like the link you posted) and then the three dynamic extended partitions will then become one basic partition? At the moment I can not actually see the data so have no idea how to back it up? Otherwise I would do as you say and back it up, format and copy back over.

DISKPART: Acronis Disk Director (see documents spanned)
Active unDelete (again, three partitions)
HxD (showing 42)
So, basically im asking if i am safe to convert 42 to 07 WITHOUT losing any data?

I have a 500GB dynamic hard drive which had a Windows 7 install on it. I wanted to reinstall Windows, so from within Windows setup I formatted the system and Windows partition, leaving a partition containing documents and pictures (i was unable to delete them). From then, Windows seemed unable to recognise the disk so i searched in DISKPART and found that the disk was labelled as INVALID.
After Googling around it looks as though i can simply change the 1C02 in the hex from 42 to 07 - however, my only concern was that the documents i have on this drive are spanned across three adjacent (dynamic?) partitions - so i am concerned that by focing the disk to be basic i will lose the connection between these partitions. Did the basic steps but when clicking on Finish I get the following error "The operation you selected will convert the selected basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s). If you convert the disk(s) to dynamic, you will not be able to start installed operating systems from any volume on the disk(s) (except the current boot volume). Are you sure you want to continue?".

I formatted and installed windows 7 64 bit in a pc which previously had windows 7 32 bit. When i booted my 1tb dynamic disk was not detected. So I went into disk management and it had listed my disk as "Foreign Disk". So i imported the foreign disk.
The drive was detected and opened. So i rebooted the pc but now the drive is still not appearing in my computer. When i go to disk management the 1tb appears but there is no drive letter assigned. When i try to assign drive letter it statest that "Specified File cannot be found"

Yesterday , randomly , when I turned on the computer I saw nothing but a black screen. It wasn't the black screen of death , looked like a windows black screen but it just wasn't displaying anything. Its almost like windows is operating normally in the background , its just not showing me. When I put the disk in it comes up occasionally and works fine , but when I shut down and turn it back on its back to the same ole thing.
I have windows 7 home premium , 32-bit. I read somewhere that I may need to check the boot order , but I have no idea how to do any of this.
When I boot from it after the "Starting Windows" Screen I get BSOD and it says "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA".This is what I thought was important from the BSOD all the middle text says is disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing, and I have no idea how to do that and no idea if that would even fix this. Can this be caused from a faulty hard drive or is this a problem with the install disk itself.
