After Installing Game (GTL) With Starforce Protection PC Won't Boot?

Sep 8, 2010

I found a relatively old post about this issue but the post in question degenerated into other topics so I am starting my own.I made the supreme Mistake of Installing a game called "GT Legends" or "GTL".The game uses a lousy protection scheme called "Starforce" that allows you to run the game from the CD ROM.

The drivers for this program are not signed, but by the time you realize that is a bit too late. The net effect is that upon Rebooting Windows Pro 64Bit you get a message to "Reboot choosing a disk with an OS" (I am paraphrasing here, basically it's saying I am booting off a drive without the OS in it.

After numerous searches I found that pressing F8 and getting to the boot choice menu you have to choose "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" and the machine will finally boot.I did more research and it appears that you have to uninstall these starforce drivers to roll back thing and Starforce provides a coupe of programs to help with that. Here is the problem:

1) When I press F8 instead of the boor choices I get a Asus screen telling me what keys to press to get where I want to go. One of the choices is F8 but it takes an enormous amount of time to have the screen appear and a most times it just reboots and shopws the same inane message that it can't boot.

2) The other option I found on my own was to press Ctrl M and choose the boot drive manually in the boot loader screen. That sometimes reboots windows properly (it seems that to get to the boot choices is a bit of a chore on my machine).

3) I followed the instructions posted in various forums to try and delete the Starforce drivers, but they are not where the posts all say they are.

4) I downloaded and installed the Starforce utilities to respectively (a) find and update and (b) Uninstall the starforce drivers. Both tell me I have no Starforce drivers installed. (which is what I found out by looking for them as well)

5) Yet, the drivers must be someplace because a) I did not uninstall them, and b) my machine was booting fine before this mess and what I am seeing is clearly the presence of an unsigned driver(s).

6) I tried performing a System Restore, but before I did I checked what files would have been affected. The starforce drivers are not there. In fact, no drivers are there at all except a couple that I know exactly what they do.

The computer is about a week old so I don't have a lot of experience with my MoBo yet. Please forgive me if I missed something obvious (specs in sig),I am wondering:

1) Does anyone have any experience with this?2) Can I ask Windows to find any unsigned drivers on my machine?3) Any other ideas? I can't mess around with the startup each time. I need to fix this.

BTW, no one is taking responsibility for this mess, not the game devs not the starforce folks.

Xbox 360 Game Controller Drivers Not Installing?

Jun 10, 2011

So I just got this Xbox 360 controller for gaming and downloaded the hardware at the Microsoft Hardware web site, but when I go to activate it in the "game controllers" option in the control panel, the icon doesn't show. So I went on the internet trying to find some way to get around this whole thing. I found a post on this web site that was very useful and it took me to device manager where I followed the step by step instructions to install the driver, but when I tried to install the driver on my PC it would say: "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it." Then it says: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

Windows 7 Permissions Screwed Up After Installing Game?

I downloaded Black Prophecy beta client, installed it. During the install, It was installing microsoft .net framework and direct x stuff. I'm thinking that the framework did something to my permissions because I can't even launch the game.Whenever I try to launch the game it shows the "windows can't acess this file blah blah blah" crap. Now the reason why I think the framework screwed up my permissions is, now whenever I start up firefox, an error message pops and and says "microsoft and acess this file blahblabhl" Also I can't even uninstall the game, I have to manually drag to to the recycle bin. How do I fix this

BSOD Streaming Video And Installing Game (Specifically, Blizzard)?

May 11, 2012

I began seeing a blue screen about 5 months ago when I first got my computer, and after posting here with one BSOD report, I was informed of the fact that Avast Virus scanning software could be the culprit. After uninstalling the software, I no longer received the problem. 5 months later, the issue has come back. I've recently installed Fraps and Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 on my machine. I saw the BSOD appear once again 2 days ago and it seems to appear while streaming video and installing a game. I also see my machine hard-lock while streaming video from time to time, but I think the BSOD does not officially trigger, so hard-locking is the result.

Disk Boot Failure After Game Crash

Nov 2, 2012

A while back my computer crashed when playing ARMA2. I was playing and suddenly my screen turned black but the sound kept playing. I did a hard reboot and i got a Disk Boot failure. I decide to do another hard reboot and the computer turned on normally. After this i haven't had any problems any more.

Until yesterday when i installed a new game (Dishonored) A minute into the game the same thing happened as with the ARMA2 crash. Screen turns black but sound keep playing so i did a hard reboot. I got a Disk Boot failure but after a hard reboot it is gone again. But unlike with the ARMA2 crashes this happens every time i try to play dishonoured. I reinstalled the game on a different partition of the same drive and it stilled happened although this time it let me play for about 5min. But i don't think it had anything to do with reinstalling it on different partition it seems to randomly crash within 1-5 min.

I check a few other games and they don't seem to give any problems. I also did a chkdisk of the drive the game is installed on but no problems where found. I also did a memtest86 but also no errors.

My Windows is installed on a SSD but the game itself is installed on a HDD. don't know if that matters but i thought i just add that.

So is it the game or is it the drive ?

Computer Crashed During Game, Cannot Boot Into Windows Anymore

Jul 9, 2012

I recently bought a new power supply, along with more ram because I was already ordering the power supply. When the package came and I set everything up in the computer, the PC turned on and everything was fine. I started to play a game with my friend and the computer just turned off. No error message, nothing. I believe the computer overheated, but I could be completely wrong. Now, when I start my computer up, it gets to the Launch System Repair (Recommended) or Start Windows Normally. If I select one of them, it will get into the 'Starting Windows' screen with the orbs, and then the monitor will just go blank. The computer still runs in the background, but my monitor just is blank. It is not the RAM (I switched and went to my old RAM) And I also cannot boot into safe mode, or anything of the sort, as the same thing happens. And I cannot boot from a CD (Tried with a windows 7 repair disc and computer goes blank again)

Cannot Boot Windows 7 After Installing Opensuse 12.1 On Dual Boot

Apr 6, 2012

I installed opensuse 12.1 on dual boot along with my other windows 7 installation. Installation of opensuse is successful and i can use it. But when I tried to use windows 7 on grub, it says bootmgr is missing. I've already encountered this problem a long time ago so i tried to use bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /rebuildbcd and bootrec /fixboot in the recovery console in the windows 7 DVD. Rebuildbcd and fixboot did not work and it said something like it cannot find my windows installation. I also tried bootrec /scanos, it returned a windows installation on D:\Windows but my windows is in drive C. I think this has something to do with me messing up the active partition in disk management a month ago but i already fixed it by setting the active partition to the system reserved partition. Only fixmbr is successful, but now i can't boot on any OS because it says: Missing operating system.I also tried bcdboot C:\Windows but it failed with a message that goes like: Failure when attempting to copy boot information..

Windows 7 Won't Boot After Installing Ubuntu Dual Boot?

Dec 3, 2010

I can't get Win 7 to boot after setting up dual boot (Ubuntu 10.10) on my GF's laptop. I'll describe the problem and everything that has been tried so far. REALLY hoping somebody has an idea, I'm getting desperate.I installed Ubuntu last night via the Live CD. Used the Live version to install alongside Windows and partition the drive, install Grub, etc. At reboot, after POST it would just go to a black screen with a flashing cursor. I could only run off the live CD. A forum member determined the Grub was trying to load from the wrong partition. We changed that and voila! Grub now loads properly. I can boot into Ubunto via Grub with zero problems. HOWEVER: when I try to boot into Win 7 from Grub, it just locks at the same flashing cursor of death screen. The 7 partition is till intact, I can see and access all the files on the 7 partition from within Ubuntu, however 7 will not boot. I have tried downloading and burning the Win 7 repair disk and doing all of the following,Running the automatic Start Up Repair - several times. All it does is remove Grub, but booting still goes to the flashing cursor and I have to reinstall Grub again to be able to do anything after POST.I have used the command prompt to run "bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr". Has the same effect as above.I have used all the bootsec.exe /fixmbr, /fixboot, and /rebuildBCD commands. Again, all have the same effect and I have to reinstall Grub to get anywhere.I don't have an installation disk to try and just do a repair install because Asus apparently doesn't feel that I would need one of these. All I have is the recovery disks from the Asus AIRecovery application that want to just re-format the entire drive and start over. This isn't an option. It's my GF's laptop (mine gave up the ghost last week) and we both have WAY too much highly important data on here. Not to mention she would castrate me . Now from all my research the only other thing I've come across that sounds possible is that the boot flag needs to be set to a different partition. Somebody had a somewhat similar problem and it turned out the way Dell set up the system the boot flag had to be moved to a recovery partition and it worked fine. I'm wondering if Asus has something similar going on, but I can't figure out how to move the boot flag. I'm going on 12 straight hours of working on this now

Installing Windows 7 X64 From Boot

Oct 25, 2011

I was originally running Windows XP 32bit. I tried to install Windows 7 32 by booting from the CD but I had a problem where I would get past the Loading Windows Files page then I ended up on a screen which appeared to be a Windows 7 Wallpaper and only my mouse cursor but nothing else would happen. I was since able to install the 32 bit Windows 7 by loading it up in Windows XP itself and going from there. However I now need to install the 64 bit version instead. And this cannot be done whilst in the windows environment. It has to be booted from the CD, But once again I am having the same problem. I get to a black screen which says Loading Windows Files with a grey loading bar. Then it goes to a starting windows page, and then finally the blueish coloured wallpaper shows up and my mouse cursor but nothing else happens. I don't have anything to click on.

Boot And Installing Multiply OS's From ExtHDD?

Sep 3, 2011

I have a external hard drive made from a spare laptop hard drive. Size is 160GB, enclosure is a Sharkoon Quickstore Portable Pro (USB 3.0).I wanted to make 2 partitions on this disk. The first partition will be around 50GB and will contain the data for booting and installing different OS's.The second partition (100GB) will be used a data storage, in short: just a external hard drive for storing files like music, pictures, etc.I wanted to make the first partition bootable, and program a menu to choose between different OS's. Main concept is I want a hard drive with Windows 7, Windows XP, Ubuntu, etc. on it to INSTALL this to the PC it's plugged in. I already have a bootable USB stick containing Windows 7, that's where the idea came from. So I don't want to run a OS on the drive, but I want to be able to INSTALL a OS from the drive.

Can't Dual Boot After Installing W7 Retail With W7 RC

Dec 28, 2009

I was running Vista on one partition, and Windows 7 RC on a second partition. Was able to dual boot with no problems. I just installed Windows 7 Retail Upgrade on the partition where Vista was located, after reformatting that partition. I can run the new installation fine, but I can't boot into the RC version. I can access the partition using explorer, just can't find a way to boot it.

I'd like to get in there to pull some configuration information from programs, to enter when I reinstall the programs on the new system. I'm not sure what I messed up here, but is there a way to find a fix to the problem?
