Windows 7 Permissions Screwed Up After Installing Game?

Apr 4, 2011

I downloaded Black Prophecy beta client, installed it. During the install, It was installing microsoft .net framework and direct x stuff. I'm thinking that the framework did something to my permissions because I can't even launch the game.Whenever I try to launch the game it shows the "windows can't acess this file blah blah blah" crap. Now the reason why I think the framework screwed up my permissions is, now whenever I start up firefox, an error message pops and and says "microsoft and acess this file blahblabhl" Also I can't even uninstall the game, I have to manually drag to to the recycle bin. How do I fix this

Screwed Up XP Partition

Oct 19, 2009

I tried to set up a dualboot of 7 and XP, so I made a new partition from XP (named S: ) and installed 7 there.

It finished installing all right and booted to 7, but when I restarted no boot manager appeared and I could only run XP.

So I decided to follow the steps from Method 2 here
Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP

but I must have screwed something up very badly 'cause I can only access 7 now.

I went into the disk management tool and things have gone weird there: S: drive is now labeled C: (and I can't change it), and my XP drive (that was C: ) is now a logical drive (wtf?) labeled E:

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Screwed Over Registry And Wifi Stopped Working

Dec 24, 2011

I was playing around with the registry deleting what I though to be useless stuff and being the silly man I am, I somehow disabled the wifi. I did not backup my registry and I have no system restores to return to because I disabled that service.I can connect to a router on windows 7 wifi in that the router will detect an incorrect network password, but it always says limited access under the wifi icon. I cannot log in to the router to change the router's settings when i put 192.168.1.1 in a web browser. Otherwise there is no wifi functionality.I know this problem is isolated to my windows os because when i boot on ubuntu (which I am on now) I can get wifi.I tried reinstalling the wifi card but that did not work.I still have my windows 7 disc but my disc drive broke like 8 months ago... I'm probably going to have to end up buying another one

If I system repair from the windows disc, will it still preserve my files and installations? Is there some easier way to fix this, like is there a default registry file out there that I can just download and run in windows 7 to restore my registry to defaults?Oh and I was also deleting a bunch of tasks off the windows task scheduler as well. I don't think deleting a task would disable the wifi but I don't know.

Lost All Photos And Videos In Libraries / Album Art Screwed Up

Oct 13, 2011

I'm new to Windows 7 and "Libraries". Just as I got it all figured out and organized, I seem to have really made a mess by trying to keep WMP from monitoring my video and picture libraries. Now when I click on Start/Pictures or Start/Videos it's empty! Also, and I don't know if this is related, album art is all screwed up in WMP. Not all art and songs match. If there is a way to "reset" WMP, maybe that would work. I can't figure out how to keep it from updating WMP. I found where to uncheck the update libraries but there doesn't seem to be a way to stop the program from going on line daily, weekly or monthly to update the program.

Xbox 360 Game Controller Drivers Not Installing?

Jun 10, 2011

So I just got this Xbox 360 controller for gaming and downloaded the hardware at the Microsoft Hardware web site, but when I go to activate it in the "game controllers" option in the control panel, the icon doesn't show. So I went on the internet trying to find some way to get around this whole thing. I found a post on this web site that was very useful and it took me to device manager where I followed the step by step instructions to install the driver, but when I tried to install the driver on my PC it would say: "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it." Then it says: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

After Installing Game (GTL) With Starforce Protection PC Won't Boot?

Sep 8, 2010

I found a relatively old post about this issue but the post in question degenerated into other topics so I am starting my own.I made the supreme Mistake of Installing a game called "GT Legends" or "GTL".The game uses a lousy protection scheme called "Starforce" that allows you to run the game from the CD ROM.

The drivers for this program are not signed, but by the time you realize that is a bit too late. The net effect is that upon Rebooting Windows Pro 64Bit you get a message to "Reboot choosing a disk with an OS" (I am paraphrasing here, basically it's saying I am booting off a drive without the OS in it.

After numerous searches I found that pressing F8 and getting to the boot choice menu you have to choose "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" and the machine will finally boot.I did more research and it appears that you have to uninstall these starforce drivers to roll back thing and Starforce provides a coupe of programs to help with that. Here is the problem:

1) When I press F8 instead of the boor choices I get a Asus screen telling me what keys to press to get where I want to go. One of the choices is F8 but it takes an enormous amount of time to have the screen appear and a most times it just reboots and shopws the same inane message that it can't boot.

2) The other option I found on my own was to press Ctrl M and choose the boot drive manually in the boot loader screen. That sometimes reboots windows properly (it seems that to get to the boot choices is a bit of a chore on my machine).

3) I followed the instructions posted in various forums to try and delete the Starforce drivers, but they are not where the posts all say they are.

4) I downloaded and installed the Starforce utilities to respectively (a) find and update and (b) Uninstall the starforce drivers. Both tell me I have no Starforce drivers installed. (which is what I found out by looking for them as well)

5) Yet, the drivers must be someplace because a) I did not uninstall them, and b) my machine was booting fine before this mess and what I am seeing is clearly the presence of an unsigned driver(s).

6) I tried performing a System Restore, but before I did I checked what files would have been affected. The starforce drivers are not there. In fact, no drivers are there at all except a couple that I know exactly what they do.

The computer is about a week old so I don't have a lot of experience with my MoBo yet. Please forgive me if I missed something obvious (specs in sig),I am wondering:

1) Does anyone have any experience with this?2) Can I ask Windows to find any unsigned drivers on my machine?3) Any other ideas? I can't mess around with the startup each time. I need to fix this.

BTW, no one is taking responsibility for this mess, not the game devs not the starforce folks.

BSOD Streaming Video And Installing Game (Specifically, Blizzard)?

May 11, 2012

I began seeing a blue screen about 5 months ago when I first got my computer, and after posting here with one BSOD report, I was informed of the fact that Avast Virus scanning software could be the culprit. After uninstalling the software, I no longer received the problem. 5 months later, the issue has come back. I've recently installed Fraps and Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 on my machine. I saw the BSOD appear once again 2 days ago and it seems to appear while streaming video and installing a game. I also see my machine hard-lock while streaming video from time to time, but I think the BSOD does not officially trigger, so hard-locking is the result.

How To Get Permissions For Windows 7

And not system files, i'm talking music and movies that been on my WD external for years - i cant move from portable-portable or portable to HD, which is ridiculous! Windows keeps asking for administator control - which i am, as the only user on my com. No method i've had explained to me makes this simple. C'mon guys, not technospeak, no 130 IQ requirement, just tell me what i gotta do to move files, 1 or 100, from one place to another

Vista Took Over Windows 7 Permissions

Jul 18, 2011

I get pretty tired of Vista and all this permissions stuff. I was testing out a file in different OS versions. I was working with it in Windows 7 Pro. For easy of use I moved the file over to the Windows 7's C Drive.Booted into Vista. I needed to make a quick change to the file. I go to Save the changes and I get another one of Vista's messages (that I probably never read) about you don't have permissions to save. I was like sure I do I'm Admin on my Computer (who cares what OS I'm in). The computer didn't answer me, which is probably good, because it would be laughing now. So I'm in Vista and I right click on the Windows 7 drive and I give myself permissions to acess the Drive. I'm not sure if that moved to all the sub folders or not.I get into Windows 7 and now Windows 7 Doesn't have access to the its own C Drive. I try to give it permissions like 3 or 4 times and it shows it should have permission but nothing happens. (I get an error message when trying to created a file in the C drive in Windows 7)I better go back into Vista and take off any permissions for that drive. Guess what? I do that. In vista I take any owner or permission off for the Windows 7 Drive. Now I'm back into Windows 7 and I can't even access the C Drive? I can't even access the permissions for the drive? How do I go about restoring Windows 7 permissions?

I don't want the 2 non-admins to do this (my children), and I don't want to add them as admins on the Windows 7 machine.Surely it's possible to share the printer on the Windows 7 machine without them having admin privileges.

After Windows 7 Installation Don't Have Any Permissions On C:

Mar 5, 2012

This is the problem:

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 and don't have any permissions on C:

Like for example i cant change or delete anything from Program files (x86) or Program Files! Folder Access Denied. You need permission to perform this action.

I am administrator on my system, and i even tried Built-in Administrator Account, still no permissions, same as my normal admin account, if i try to take ownership i get ERROR: Access is denied, same on both admin accounts.

I read many threads on this forum but no help for my problem, i really need to fix this cause this is my studio pc and i cant setup some software needed for my production because of permissions I never seen this problem before, i have used windows 7 as administrator on my other computers and they all work normaly.

I checked the permissions for it, and literally, No account has full control or even write permissions to this folder- not even the local administrator account. I have been unable to add permissions to the folder, because there is no account that has them...The local administrators have full control of C: and I attempted to force child objects of c: to inherit permissions from C:, but it did not work.

Cannot Take Ownership/cannot Change Permissions For Windows Folder

Feb 9, 2012

All this started when I just wanted to change the way the clock looked to a custom one.

I go to the Windows Sidebar folder to locate the Gadgets folder for the clocks, and I try to make backups of a few of the files in the clocks folder by moving some of them to a new folder I created on the desktop. I cannot move them, access denied. I try taking ownership of the folder, cannot do it, access denied. I try changing the permissions, cannot do it, the boxes you can tick are grayed out. Long story short, I tried backing out of all the folders, trying to take ownership and change permissions all the way back to the Program Files folder itself to no avail. It seems if it is a default Windows folder I cannot mess with it in anyway; this also seems to be the case with my McAfee folder, but something that is less of a risk to change, like my Zune folder, I can change around no problem.

Quick rundown, I am using Windows 7 Ultimate edition, this is my only account for the computer, and it is an admin account. I have tried using several different "Take Ownership" downloads, including the one suggested on this site, but it does not work for the Window folders. "Take Ownership" won't even show up if I right-click on the folder. I know the Take Ownership mod is installed correctly, because it will popup for something that is not a default folder, like my Zune folder. .
