Cannot Take Ownership/cannot Change Permissions For Windows Folder

Feb 9, 2012

All this started when I just wanted to change the way the clock looked to a custom one.

I go to the Windows Sidebar folder to locate the Gadgets folder for the clocks, and I try to make backups of a few of the files in the clocks folder by moving some of them to a new folder I created on the desktop. I cannot move them, access denied. I try taking ownership of the folder, cannot do it, access denied. I try changing the permissions, cannot do it, the boxes you can tick are grayed out. Long story short, I tried backing out of all the folders, trying to take ownership and change permissions all the way back to the Program Files folder itself to no avail. It seems if it is a default Windows folder I cannot mess with it in anyway; this also seems to be the case with my McAfee folder, but something that is less of a risk to change, like my Zune folder, I can change around no problem.

Quick rundown, I am using Windows 7 Ultimate edition, this is my only account for the computer, and it is an admin account. I have tried using several different "Take Ownership" downloads, including the one suggested on this site, but it does not work for the Window folders. "Take Ownership" won't even show up if I right-click on the folder. I know the Take Ownership mod is installed correctly, because it will popup for something that is not a default folder, like my Zune folder. .

How TO Change Permissions

Jul 11, 2012

I need to change permissions so I can delete my default "Dropbox" folder from my C drive. I can't figure this out; the "objects" menus and all that are beyond me. If I try to delete it says I have to change permissions....I tried, but I don't get it at all. Can someone just give me a step-by-step? I know it's complicated, because you can't see the way it was set up originally by the guy who built my computer....I just need to delete that folder so I can start over fresh!

Folder Locked; Cannot Change Permissions

Apr 5, 2011

I probably did a dump thing (only the 100,000th in my lifetime!). I backed up my working folders on my XP desktop into a zip file where the options were set to save the relative path of each file. I then extracted the backup zip file to my Win 7 laptop, not remembering that Win 7's folder structure is different than XP's. So I wound up with a new folder on the laptop "Documents and Settings", with all the stuff that was under it. So I was going to open it, move the files from (XP's) My Documents to (Win 7's) Documents. . . but there's just a weeeeeee problem: The Documents and Settings folder is LOCKED!!I have gone to the Security tab under properties and changed the permissions to allow EVERYONE full access, and it still denies me access. I downloaded Unlocker, but it doesn't show up in the menu when I right click the folder, so I have no idea what it's good for/how to use it. I can't delete it because that's not a choice on the menu when you right-click it.BTW, yesterday it had a padlock icon overlay on it. Today it has a shortcut arrow. I also have no idea why it's showing as a shortcut.

Change Drive Permissions If Options Are Greyed Out?

Mar 2, 2012

Today I dual booted Windows 7 and Windows 8. Everything was fine, until I decided I wanted to point my music collection in Win8 to my Win7 music folder (turns out you can't do this right now anyway in the music app). I wanted to make sure that win8 didn't screw with any files so I changed the whole drive permissions in Win8 to have read access, but not write access of my Win7 drive. I did the vice versa for Win7.When I restarted my system I got a "windows created a temporary paging file..." error message and figured out its because I screwed with my file permissions. To fix it I just need to change the permissions back, however now they are all greyed out (even in the (hidden) Administrator account) and I can't figure out how to change the permissions back.

WMDC Says Dont Have Permissions To Change Settings?

Mar 8, 2011

am trying to use the WMDC to get some files off my Winmo 6.1 phone. The display is shot. When connected to the PC, it wont just show up as a drive because in the device manager it is a USB mass storage device with this error this device cannot start.(Code10) I cant use active sync on XP because it doesnt allow the connection until a question about duplicate files check box is checked, but I cant see it. A VZW tech told me that WMDC will connect to the phone without that problem. But when I check "allow data connections on device when connected to PC", it tells me I dont have sufficient permissions. I am the Administrator on this computer (in user accounts, my user account shows as a standard account and wont let me change it).

Does A Workgroup Name Change Delete All Shares And Permissions

Jan 5, 2013

Had a strange issue on one of my clients business PCs. These 2 PC's are setup each year at a kiosk for tax preparation. They were working perfectly last year and were boxed up and stored for most of the year. Today I had to get the kiosk and 2 PC ad hoc network all setup and working again. Should have been easy as pie...But once I had them connected I couldnt attach to any shares from the "client" to the "server" (both running Windows 7). The "server" in this ad hoc had all of the shares from last year not shared anymore. It has to have approx 20 folders shared in order for their apps to work.I am suspecting that during the off season it was plugged into a different network and might have had the workgroup changed and then changed back before I arrived. Can anyone tell me if a workgroup name change would in fact change/delete the share permissions? I have googled and searched this site, but all I get are how to change a workgroup name or how to change share permissions.I know how to do that

Administrator Account Cannot Take Control Or Change Permissions To System Folders

May 3, 2012

I'm running windows 7 ultimate and am trying to install some software off of a secure server at a remote location to my hard drive. The install fails every time because the my user account (an administrator) does not have full write permissions to the program files directory. I have tried taking ownership of the directory, but I don't have permission to change it from TrustedInstaller.

I turned on the built in administrator account and logged in through that, but there is no difference in permission level. When I attempt to change the permission level I get the following error dialog box: An error occurred while applying security information to:

C:Program Files (x86)
Access is denied

Then the following: Unable to save permission changes on Program Files (x86)Access is denied. I've been fighting with this for three days now and I consider myself pretty adept at typical windows bs. Yes, my UAC is set all the way down. That was the first thing I turned off. I also tried shutting down virus protection and firewalls to no avail. Any help here would be awesome since none of the posts I've been able to find say what to do when the admin can't take control from TrustedInstaller.

Laptop USB Ports Acting Strangely, Can't Figure Out?

Oct 3, 2011

I was just browsing the net with the usual plugged into my laptop (external in the lefthand port, keyboard and mouse in the righthand ports) when suddenly my keyboard and mouse just stopped working. The external on the left is fine and is still functioning as I type this. The mouse didn't show any signs of life when plugged into other ports but the keyboard had all three of the lock lights glowing. I tried restarting my laptop, uninstalling the USB hubs in Device Manager, making sure power management doesn't turn them off and still they wouldn't work.

After one restart my keyboard would work if the mouse wasn't plugged in, as soon as you did that the keyboard would either show all three lock lights or no lights at all. At one point they both worked together but after about five second of moving the mouse both stopped responding again. It got to the point where if I moved my mouse a lot the lights on the keyboard and mouse would flash for a second. After doing this a few times in frustration I got a message about USB Hub power surges and to click here to deal with the problem. I was too slow with the trackpad so I missed clicking. I can only find XP related information on these and haven't got another so I'm kinda stuck.

Single Physical SSD Acting As Two Drives In RAID0?

Dec 10, 2012

I always thought that RAID 0 configuration is possible using two identical physical drives. I bought this Sony Laptop. If you go down to the Hard Drive Storage section you see you can customize it with four different options. I chose the 1st one (750GB mechanical drive). However you can see that the last two options involve RAID 0 (128x2 or 256x2). I was wondering where to install the 2nd drive as there is only a single drive compartment with a single SATA ribbon connector when you remove the back cover. I called Sony Tech Support and this is what they said: "You can only physically install a single SSD. The RAID 0 options involve a single physical SSD that inside has two chipsets in RAID 0, in other words, it's a single physical SSD that acts as two drives". Of course I never heard of this, does this exist?

Admin Mapped Drives Acting Weird

Jul 21, 2009

I've been finding that the new UAC and linux style permission system is pretty annoying (I'm coming to Windows 7 from XP). Yea, I know it's proper security but I haven't had any issues with XP all these years since I know what I'm doing so I really wish my OS would trust me, lol.

Anyway.. I made life pretty comfortable by installing HotKeyBind and having it run as the administrator so whenever I hit Win-D I get an Administrator level DOS window. Usually when I get hamstrung by the limited rights it's when I'm in DOS trying to do something so this got rid of most of my hassles. HKB launches at startup from a batch file in the startup folder which does a "runas" on HKB to launch it as admin.

Now the problem comes from the fact that the DOS process is not running as me, so my mapped drives are not accessible. Even file associations were wrong when launched from that window. So I edited the launch batch to launch a second bat rather than HKB directly. In that batch file I map my drives. Seems to work golden. Alas, it seems at random intervals the system suddenly forgets the domain user I've associated with the drive mappings. (All the drives are remote PCs that require my domain credentials). I made another .bat called "admindrives" that will unmap them all then remap and then they work.

Just now though, I couldn't access my webserver's D$ share, kept getting "Access Denied" in my admin DOS. Admindrives.bat didn't help. Manually remapped the drive.. net use w: webserverd$ /user:domainusername pwd. It mapped with no error, but still couldn't access the drive. Opened a regular non-admin window, went to the W: drive just fine.

It's frustrating as hell. I wish I could just make my domain account act like the super-admin, or make the super-admin have a domain user token.

Anyone know of a way to handle mapped drives like this? Has anyone found a way yet to make a domain account have the full no-limits admin privledges?

Keyboard And Mouse Both Start Acting Strangely After A Few Hours

Oct 17, 2012

I've been getting this problem lately where both my mouse and my keyboard start acting up after a few hours of the computer being turned on. What happens is that the keyboard stops using it's normal functions (ie. pressing m to type m) and starts doing a number of different things instead, ranging from not work at all to opening programs and closing them down by pressing F keys and pressing unique characters such as umlauted letters. The mouse also acts up, trying to run programs in administrator when they are pressed on the windows bar at the bottom. The computer is pretty brand new (a month old) and I've been using a new mouse and keyboard since buying it also. I've tried unplugging and resetting the keyboard when this happens but the only thing that seems to reset the issue is restarting my computer which fixes the problem.
