When I first installed Windows 7 a few days back, I didnt do anything to change any permissions, but I have had several occurances where Windows 7 stops me from installing or even startring a program. I tried to install an image of the message here, but Im not sure how that is done.
View 5 RepliesI need to change permissions so I can delete my default "Dropbox" folder from my C drive. I can't figure this out; the "objects" menus and all that are beyond me. If I try to delete it says I have to change permissions....I tried, but I don't get it at all. Can someone just give me a step-by-step? I know it's complicated, because you can't see the way it was set up originally by the guy who built my computer....I just need to delete that folder so I can start over fresh!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI probably did a dump thing (only the 100,000th in my lifetime!). I backed up my working folders on my XP desktop into a zip file where the options were set to save the relative path of each file. I then extracted the backup zip file to my Win 7 laptop, not remembering that Win 7's folder structure is different than XP's. So I wound up with a new folder on the laptop "Documents and Settings", with all the stuff that was under it. So I was going to open it, move the files from (XP's) My Documents to (Win 7's) Documents. . . but there's just a weeeeeee problem: The Documents and Settings folder is LOCKED!!I have gone to the Security tab under properties and changed the permissions to allow EVERYONE full access, and it still denies me access. I downloaded Unlocker, but it doesn't show up in the menu when I right click the folder, so I have no idea what it's good for/how to use it. I can't delete it because that's not a choice on the menu when you right-click it.BTW, yesterday it had a padlock icon overlay on it. Today it has a shortcut arrow. I also have no idea why it's showing as a shortcut.

View 5 Replies View RelatedToday I dual booted Windows 7 and Windows 8. Everything was fine, until I decided I wanted to point my music collection in Win8 to my Win7 music folder (turns out you can't do this right now anyway in the music app). I wanted to make sure that win8 didn't screw with any files so I changed the whole drive permissions in Win8 to have read access, but not write access of my Win7 drive. I did the vice versa for Win7.When I restarted my system I got a "windows created a temporary paging file..." error message and figured out its because I screwed with my file permissions. To fix it I just need to change the permissions back, however now they are all greyed out (even in the (hidden) Administrator account) and I can't figure out how to change the permissions back.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi needed to pawn my laptop for a short time and didnt want my files to be viewed by anyone while it was not in my possesion, so what i did i changed the file permissions of my c: drive so that only admin had fulll control and no one else. well now i cant access my c: drive with my admin accrt. nor will it let me change the file permissions either. also a hand full of other things will not work such as the internet explorer icon on the task bar or start menu but i can open i.e. from the recently viewd submenu from the i.e. icon on the start menu. also i can open files on my c: drive from any old shortcut icons i had left on my desktop but i cant acces them directly from explorer. so i found some work arounds but really need to get full control of my h/d.

I basically have changed the names of the login Everytime I goto Network..then click on BOB (let's just say that's my name), I see two things listed. Under Users.MY stupid cousin's name (STEVE) and then "public." When I try and change the folder's name to MY name (Bob), I always get this message:You need permission to perform this action You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder.I've already gone to control panel, User Accounts, changed the name to BOB and made it the Administrator.

All this started when I just wanted to change the way the clock looked to a custom one.
I go to the Windows Sidebar folder to locate the Gadgets folder for the clocks, and I try to make backups of a few of the files in the clocks folder by moving some of them to a new folder I created on the desktop. I cannot move them, access denied. I try taking ownership of the folder, cannot do it, access denied. I try changing the permissions, cannot do it, the boxes you can tick are grayed out. Long story short, I tried backing out of all the folders, trying to take ownership and change permissions all the way back to the Program Files folder itself to no avail. It seems if it is a default Windows folder I cannot mess with it in anyway; this also seems to be the case with my McAfee folder, but something that is less of a risk to change, like my Zune folder, I can change around no problem.
Quick rundown, I am using Windows 7 Ultimate edition, this is my only account for the computer, and it is an admin account. I have tried using several different "Take Ownership" downloads, including the one suggested on this site, but it does not work for the Window folders. "Take Ownership" won't even show up if I right-click on the folder. I know the Take Ownership mod is installed correctly, because it will popup for something that is not a default folder, like my Zune folder. .
How do I change the permissions for the administrator account to Full control so that I do not get the "access is denied" message when trying to perform certain functions?
View 3 Replies View Relatedam trying to use the WMDC to get some files off my Winmo 6.1 phone. The display is shot. When connected to the PC, it wont just show up as a drive because in the device manager it is a USB mass storage device with this error this device cannot start.(Code10) I cant use active sync on XP because it doesnt allow the connection until a question about duplicate files check box is checked, but I cant see it. A VZW tech told me that WMDC will connect to the phone without that problem. But when I check "allow data connections on device when connected to PC", it tells me I dont have sufficient permissions. I am the Administrator on this computer (in user accounts, my user account shows as a standard account and wont let me change it).
View 1 Replies View RelatedHad a strange issue on one of my clients business PCs. These 2 PC's are setup each year at a kiosk for tax preparation. They were working perfectly last year and were boxed up and stored for most of the year. Today I had to get the kiosk and 2 PC ad hoc network all setup and working again. Should have been easy as pie...But once I had them connected I couldnt attach to any shares from the "client" to the "server" (both running Windows 7). The "server" in this ad hoc had all of the shares from last year not shared anymore. It has to have approx 20 folders shared in order for their apps to work.I am suspecting that during the off season it was plugged into a different network and might have had the workgroup changed and then changed back before I arrived. Can anyone tell me if a workgroup name change would in fact change/delete the share permissions? I have googled and searched this site, but all I get are how to change a workgroup name or how to change share permissions.I know how to do that

The problem is I changed the folder permissions of C:Program Files and C:Program Files (x86) to Deny for all users. These included
Authenticated Users
System
Administrators
Users
I was logged in with an Administrator Account. Now the problem is I cannot access the above folders with any user. All my applications installed in those folders do not work.
I tried several solutions available on the net like changing ownership, using THE Administrator account, etc but to no avail and these folders are still locked.
Is there anyway I can access these files or shall I resort to the ultimate step i.e. re-install windows.
I'm running windows 7 ultimate and am trying to install some software off of a secure server at a remote location to my hard drive. The install fails every time because the my user account (an administrator) does not have full write permissions to the program files directory. I have tried taking ownership of the directory, but I don't have permission to change it from TrustedInstaller.
I turned on the built in administrator account and logged in through that, but there is no difference in permission level. When I attempt to change the permission level I get the following error dialog box: An error occurred while applying security information to:
C:Program Files (x86)
Access is denied
Then the following: Unable to save permission changes on Program Files (x86)Access is denied. I've been fighting with this for three days now and I consider myself pretty adept at typical windows bs. Yes, my UAC is set all the way down. That was the first thing I turned off. I also tried shutting down virus protection and firewalls to no avail. Any help here would be awesome since none of the posts I've been able to find say what to do when the admin can't take control from TrustedInstaller.
i use BitLord to download random stuff anyways the Downloads Folder Shows up like this : Now when i open Nero up it shows this Weird thing is if i hover over the folder from normal window it says the Downloads folder is only 800mb (as it is only showing me one item) yet from Nero it says the folder is over 9 Gigs. Im set as Owner of the folder and i have all permissions set for me however i am still unable to see these files outside of nero and i don't know why.When i go and try to change the permissions on the folders (the locked ones) windows says the files/folders doesn't exist...

I use the same password on all my computers and when I change one I change them all to the same p/w.Right now I am using Linux distro (Kubuntu) to ask for help here.I find that the change to the admin password on my Win7 drive is not happy with the new password. I went around and did them all at he same time. I can access every other OS on every drive with my new password but Win7 wont let me in. I have 3 of my daughters personal log ins and a guest log in as well as my own on win7 . I am the only admin user on the machine. Long story short, is there a fix for this or do I put a live Linux on the box and remove all my data, photos etc on to another drive and then re-install my win7. The Win7 disc is a genuine, legit paid for copy and other than this difficulty I don't have any problems with it.

Usually, when I am prompted for my password, there is a button I can click to choose the keyboard language, so I can type it in. However, I restarted my computer and the button has vanished. This means that I cannot choose the Russian alphabet to type my password in, and my computer has become unusable. I do not have a password reset disk. Is there any way for me to fix this problem? I right click on the FOLDER > PROPERTIES > CUSTOMIZE and CHANGE ICON but whatever picture i choose the folder icon doesn't change.
I've tried renaming the picture to .ico but that doesn't help either. I put the picture into another new folder by itself but that doesn't help either.
I get the error message : "The file contains no icons"
Suddenly I no longer can add folders to my themes .Also some of the theme folders that I had working previously gets stuck at the first slide and the slide show no longer works. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Win 7 x64 and originally set up and used one account that was an Admin account, thinking that I had all rights and priveleges as I should have, being the sole user.
Then I started noticing strange things like I was unable to change my Network Sharing to Off. I would select that option only to have it back On.
To my horror, I then realized that my computer had been hacked and a Default account had ALL rights and privileges and limited my account!
I called a computer specialist that reset my computer back to the original settings and am starting over. This time I have two accounts - an admin and regular account. I only work in the regular account now.
When I log in as an Admin to check up on things, I am am once again unable to disable network sharing even though I have a Homegroup.
How can I know if a hacker has taken over that account?
I have two network cards in my PC. A wireless and an ethernet card. The wireless connection is identified as a public network and I can change it.
My ethernet card is connected to another PC and I've got the two of them connected directly to each other...no routers or anything. I am unable to change the network type and it is stuck on Public Network. Is there anyway to fix this?
I have new emachines g525 laptop with windows 7 installed and updated (today).
The laptop has both cat5 and wifi networking and the issue I have is with the wifi although I haven't attempted it with the wired network.
My network consists of a gateway computer (not running windows) that has both an internal and external network interface, and there is a WiFi access point for the internal network.
The laptop connects to the access point and obtains an internal IP address using DHCP. The only access to the outside world is via a squid proxy on the gateway machine.
The problem is that when I connect with WiFi it sets the network as an "Unidentified network" and hence sets it as a "Public network". I can manually modify this each time to "Home network" via the "Choose home-group and sharing options" in "Network and Sharing Center". If I go to the "Set network Properties" popup it displays the Network name as "Unidentified network" and the icon as a bench. I am unable to change either of these properties even though the Network name field looks to be a text entry box. I would like to change the network name and have the laptop automatically use "Home network" for this connection.
I am unable to change my Creative Fatal1ty USB Gaming Headset HS-1000 from stereo to 5.1/7.1 though the configure option in Sound>Playback Devices. I want to do this so I can use X-Fi CMSS-3D with the headset (which I was using before I did a fresh install of my system), instead of having the headset on stereo and using a very basic form of X-Fi CMSS-3D
I am using the headset in a 3.0 USB port and not with a soundcard/onboard sound.
I have disabled onboard sound.
I have updated my Driver and Creative Audio Console to Creative Gaming Headsets Driver 1.01.0004 I have updated my Creative Console Launcher to Creative Console Launcher for Gaming Headsets 2.50.93
This issue has only happened after I have done a fresh install, and I did another to try and rectify this issue to no avail.
