System Administrator Permissions / Users Name Can't Change
Jan 9, 2012
Basically my cousin accidentally thought my new computer was his.. and he set it up all in his name and what not (lets go with the name STEVE).. I basically have changed the names of the login Everytime I goto Network..then click on BOB (let's just say that's my name), I see two things listed. Under Users.MY stupid cousin's name (STEVE) and then "public." When I try and change the folder's name to MY name (Bob), I always get this message:You need permission to perform this action You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder.I've already gone to control panel, User Accounts, changed the name to BOB and made it the Administrator.
I'm running windows 7 ultimate and am trying to install some software off of a secure server at a remote location to my hard drive. The install fails every time because the my user account (an administrator) does not have full write permissions to the program files directory. I have tried taking ownership of the directory, but I don't have permission to change it from TrustedInstaller.
I turned on the built in administrator account and logged in through that, but there is no difference in permission level. When I attempt to change the permission level I get the following error dialog box: An error occurred while applying security information to:
C:Program Files (x86) Access is denied
Then the following: Unable to save permission changes on Program Files (x86)Access is denied. I've been fighting with this for three days now and I consider myself pretty adept at typical windows bs. Yes, my UAC is set all the way down. That was the first thing I turned off. I also tried shutting down virus protection and firewalls to no avail. Any help here would be awesome since none of the posts I've been able to find say what to do when the admin can't take control from TrustedInstaller.
Why am I not the system administrator on my computer? How do I fix this? I am trying to run sfc /scannow in the command prompt, but it won't let me because it says I'm not the system administrator.
My hard drive has two partitions. The second partition - D - contains only data files (documents, pictures, etc.) My computer has 3 users - myself and two others. I am an Administrator and the other two are Standard Users.
The root of D has three folders:
D:user1 (that's me) D:user2 D:user3
The NTFS permissions on each user's folders are as follows:
Administrators - Full Control SYSTEM - Full Control user - Full Control
This prevents the Standard Users from accessing anyone else's data but their own, while maintaining the right of Administrators (like me) to access everybody's data.
The NTFS permissions on the root of D (only) are as follows: Administrators - Full Control SYSTEM - Full Control Authenticated Users - Read and Execute
If Authenticated Users does not have NTFS permissions on the root of D, I am denied access to D, even though I am an Administrator. If I double-click on the drive icon I get an 'Access Denied' message. However, if Authenticated Users is included in the NTFS permissions, I can open D by double-clicking on the drive icon. Why can't I access the root of D as an Administrator ... why does Authenticated Users need permissions?
I installed a program under administration rights and I am trying to give "standard users" rights to the program without them having to put in the admin password to use the program. I did some googling and tried changing permissions under security to give the user permission.
Not a big deal and kind of humorous but on my Win 7 PC I have administrator access. But there are times the computer says I don't have access to do a particular function and that I need Admin access to do the task, even though I am the one logged in and have administrator access.I guess I could generate another account and give admin access and see if that works but was just wondering if there was something weird about a setting.
Sometimes when I move directories the resulting directory needs to be modified under the security tab to add the "Authenticated Users" user in order to remove the lock icon. I've verified that I am the owner of the directory...and the other users with access to the directory is "System", My Account and "domain/Administrators".
I have created a test domain with one server (windows server 2008r2) running active directory and dns, and one client that is in the domain(windows 7 enterprise) I have created a new user, John Andrews, and added him to the Domain Admin [Global Group] and then Domain Admin's is a member of Administrators [Domain Local Group]. url...Now my understanding was that you in theory use the Global Groups for users, and the Domain Local groups for resources. So for example if your usinging the built in groups, you would assign your Admin users to the Domain Admins global group, and then any folder or object that had the Administrators domain local group in it's permissions, would be accessable to your Admins users, because Domain Admins is a member of the domain local group Administrators. On the server, while logged in as John Andrews I then created a new 10GB partition, H:, to make as a file share. The permissions of this partition have the Administrators domain local group as a member with Full Control. url...I then created a new folder in this partition called LanAdmin. The folder creates fine, but then when I try to open it, I get a dialog that I do not have permission. When I check the Security permissions, it again says that I do not have the administrative permission, however I can still hit continue to view the permissions. And in the security list is the Administrators domain local group with Full control selected. url...I do not understand why I do not have permissions to this folder, even as I just created it. Am I not correct about how a user in the global group has access to resources of a domain local group that the users global group is a member of?
I'm logged on as Administrator; it is only account on the computer.Recently I found I could not access many system admin tools and when I try I get error of you may not "have the appropriate permissions"This applies to "Services" "Component Services" "Computer Management" Also get same error when I click on Desktop Computer Icon and select "Manage"Running Win 7 Home with all latest updates.
We have a home network of 7 computers and have been using Win 7 Pro and Office 2010 Pro Plus together without error since about May until mid-summer when I began using MS Outlook. When I started using Outlook on my laptop it took over all user permissions on the network making me the administrator/owner. I don't know if Outlook is responsible. I am just making connections with the timing. Folders were shared that should not have been shared and the file system got mixed up. Files came up with strange attribute settings. It appears that my computer encrypted files that reside on other computers leaving other users unable to access them.
On the occasions that we have wiped my hard drive and others to fix the problem by starting over, everything seems fine until I start using MS Outlook again. It may be important to know that I am the only one that uses Outlook on the network. And, by the way, when I say start over, I mean that we wiped drives with various software such as DriveScrubber, and others, to no avail. Later, we used disk part and thought we had it licked, but NO. After that, we discovered how to delete the volume shadow copies, but it still comes back every time like a haunting or something.
We even bought brand new hard drives and installed them on all computers, bought a firewalled router, and carefully and meticulously reinstalled our software from disks making sure that everything was in order. We have isolated old files to eliminate the possibility of virus or malware. We have discussed the problem with the cable company and with Norton. I can accept the fact that I might have changed a setting unknowingly in the beginning, however, the problem will not go away after careful reinstallation and setup.
I'm trying to remove the option for user's to right click on programs and select 'run as administrator' i need to keep the right click menu but have the 'run as administrator' option either grayed out or removed.
I need to change permissions so I can delete my default "Dropbox" folder from my C drive. I can't figure this out; the "objects" menus and all that are beyond me. If I try to delete it says I have to change permissions....I tried, but I don't get it at all. Can someone just give me a step-by-step? I know it's complicated, because you can't see the way it was set up originally by the guy who built my computer....I just need to delete that folder so I can start over fresh!
When I first installed Windows 7 a few days back, I didnt do anything to change any permissions, but I have had several occurances where Windows 7 stops me from installing or even startring a program. I tried to install an image of the message here, but Im not sure how that is done.
I probably did a dump thing (only the 100,000th in my lifetime!). I backed up my working folders on my XP desktop into a zip file where the options were set to save the relative path of each file. I then extracted the backup zip file to my Win 7 laptop, not remembering that Win 7's folder structure is different than XP's. So I wound up with a new folder on the laptop "Documents and Settings", with all the stuff that was under it. So I was going to open it, move the files from (XP's) My Documents to (Win 7's) Documents. . . but there's just a weeeeeee problem: The Documents and Settings folder is LOCKED!!I have gone to the Security tab under properties and changed the permissions to allow EVERYONE full access, and it still denies me access. I downloaded Unlocker, but it doesn't show up in the menu when I right click the folder, so I have no idea what it's good for/how to use it. I can't delete it because that's not a choice on the menu when you right-click it.BTW, yesterday it had a padlock icon overlay on it. Today it has a shortcut arrow. I also have no idea why it's showing as a shortcut.
Trying to change the permissions for:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionControl Paneldont load It denies me,I'm logged in under Administrator.
Today I dual booted Windows 7 and Windows 8. Everything was fine, until I decided I wanted to point my music collection in Win8 to my Win7 music folder (turns out you can't do this right now anyway in the music app). I wanted to make sure that win8 didn't screw with any files so I changed the whole drive permissions in Win8 to have read access, but not write access of my Win7 drive. I did the vice versa for Win7.When I restarted my system I got a "windows created a temporary paging file..." error message and figured out its because I screwed with my file permissions. To fix it I just need to change the permissions back, however now they are all greyed out (even in the (hidden) Administrator account) and I can't figure out how to change the permissions back.
i needed to pawn my laptop for a short time and didnt want my files to be viewed by anyone while it was not in my possesion, so what i did i changed the file permissions of my c: drive so that only admin had fulll control and no one else. well now i cant access my c: drive with my admin accrt. nor will it let me change the file permissions either. also a hand full of other things will not work such as the internet explorer icon on the task bar or start menu but i can open i.e. from the recently viewd submenu from the i.e. icon on the start menu. also i can open files on my c: drive from any old shortcut icons i had left on my desktop but i cant acces them directly from explorer. so i found some work arounds but really need to get full control of my h/d.
I got a computer from my work and as u know every thing is blocked and i don't have any permissions .can't install apps , can't update windows , can't do any thing ! is there any way that i can bypass admins control and change my permissions to be able to install apps ? is there a file responsible for that process that i can use Hiren's Boot CD to modify or change any thing in it cuz i almost have no permissions to modify any thing ?
All this started when I just wanted to change the way the clock looked to a custom one.
I go to the Windows Sidebar folder to locate the Gadgets folder for the clocks, and I try to make backups of a few of the files in the clocks folder by moving some of them to a new folder I created on the desktop. I cannot move them, access denied. I try taking ownership of the folder, cannot do it, access denied. I try changing the permissions, cannot do it, the boxes you can tick are grayed out. Long story short, I tried backing out of all the folders, trying to take ownership and change permissions all the way back to the Program Files folder itself to no avail. It seems if it is a default Windows folder I cannot mess with it in anyway; this also seems to be the case with my McAfee folder, but something that is less of a risk to change, like my Zune folder, I can change around no problem.
Quick rundown, I am using Windows 7 Ultimate edition, this is my only account for the computer, and it is an admin account. I have tried using several different "Take Ownership" downloads, including the one suggested on this site, but it does not work for the Window folders. "Take Ownership" won't even show up if I right-click on the folder. I know the Take Ownership mod is installed correctly, because it will popup for something that is not a default folder, like my Zune folder. .
How do I change the permissions for the administrator account to Full control so that I do not get the "access is denied" message when trying to perform certain functions?
am trying to use the WMDC to get some files off my Winmo 6.1 phone. The display is shot. When connected to the PC, it wont just show up as a drive because in the device manager it is a USB mass storage device with this error this device cannot start.(Code10) I cant use active sync on XP because it doesnt allow the connection until a question about duplicate files check box is checked, but I cant see it. A VZW tech told me that WMDC will connect to the phone without that problem. But when I check "allow data connections on device when connected to PC", it tells me I dont have sufficient permissions. I am the Administrator on this computer (in user accounts, my user account shows as a standard account and wont let me change it).
Had a strange issue on one of my clients business PCs. These 2 PC's are setup each year at a kiosk for tax preparation. They were working perfectly last year and were boxed up and stored for most of the year. Today I had to get the kiosk and 2 PC ad hoc network all setup and working again. Should have been easy as pie...But once I had them connected I couldnt attach to any shares from the "client" to the "server" (both running Windows 7). The "server" in this ad hoc had all of the shares from last year not shared anymore. It has to have approx 20 folders shared in order for their apps to work.I am suspecting that during the off season it was plugged into a different network and might have had the workgroup changed and then changed back before I arrived. Can anyone tell me if a workgroup name change would in fact change/delete the share permissions? I have googled and searched this site, but all I get are how to change a workgroup name or how to change share permissions.I know how to do that
The other day, I tried to edit my registry editor(regedit) because I wanted to enable something. When I do anything with my regedit, it comes up with a error messsage.
I got a new laptop at work, and the IT group performed the initial setup. Of course, they entered my name incorrectly. I am the "administrator" on this computer, and I made the correction. However, on the C: drive, under the C:Users folder, my misspelled name persists. I select then right-click, but I cannot change the folder name. I see that the "lock" symbol is displayed next to the folder name, so obviously, the folder is locked and that explains why I can't change the folder name. How do I change a folder's name under C:users?
I'm trying to share my external Hard Drive over my home network and I have sharing enabled on this drive, then I tried to get the other computers on my network to connect to it, It says they don't not have permission to connect. So then I tried to add permission in the Advanced Sharing settings, I tried to look for user accounts but it will only let me search for user accounts on this computer.
is there a software or modification to my computers i need to do to prevent people from changing stuff? i just want them to be able to use the programs on the desktop only, can't delete or open files that i dont want them to open, can open start but with limited accessibility.. is there a way to do this? i often see these changes in computer cafe's but i dont know how to do it myself..
i know that deep freeze handles these kinds of problem, but it's not free.. but is there another way?
Is there a way to change a file association for all users who use windows 7? I intend to roll windows 7 out within my company and prefer not to have to make this change per user if I could avoid it.
dad and I got laptops at the same time. We had just set them up but then for some reason (I cant remember) we swapped. I am sick of everything saying burnie (He named the administrator account that). How do I change the administrator account name to mine. Cause now I am trying to play Magic but it has taken the admin name and I dont want a mans name lol this is driving me nuts!!!
I have windows 7 installed as OS.I checked the System Volume Information folders for all the partitions for a possible virus infection.I have C: D: (my first harddisk)and G: (my second harddisk) partitions.I've seen that regarding the D: and G: partitions ,for System Volume Information subfolders (SPP etc..), only SYSTEM has the permission (full control) as shown below(SPP folder as an example):On the other hand , regarding the C: ,for the subfolders(SPP ,System Restore,Windows Backup etc..) SYSTEM and administrators both have the permissions (full control) and for the subfolders of SPP ,such as SppGroupCache and SppCBSHiveStore ; USERS (limited control),SYSTEM (full control)and administrators(full control) have permissions. Is this normal? If it is not , can a virus cause this?Should I remove the permissions of USERS and administrators and leave only the permission of SYSTEM?
