It has been a month now since installing Windows 7. Everything appears to be fine except this "access denied" errors on some of the files for certain users. I finally managed to turn on the hidden "administrator" feature in command prompt to unlock some. Aside from the design of users potentially "locking" themselves out of their own documents ( because of they are not logged in as an Admin, even though they have all admin privileges. I was going around in circles giving each other permission when the real admin was never enabled.
Now its effecting the programs and installation. For example, if Daddy logs on and try to install a program that requires a command prompt, I can't because I did not log in as an Admin. Now we have 3 separate users, each with their own documents, programs, and desktop settings.I want to delete all users and combine all the docs, programs, etc. Into one easy access and one user. No passwords, nothing. So as soon the computer boots up windows, it should ready to go, everything.

I would like to specify a set of wallpapers to rotate,(a feature windows 7 has by default) and then make it impossible for any user, administrator or otherwise, to change that set. I know there has to be a way to do that, because there are multiple tutorials on how to lock just one wallpaper,P.SI have no reservations about editing the registry and am running Windows 7 home premium?

I got a new laptop at work, and the IT group performed the initial setup. Of course, they entered my name incorrectly. I am the "administrator" on this computer, and I made the correction. However, on the C: drive, under the C:Users folder, my misspelled name persists. I select then right-click, but I cannot change the folder name. I see that the "lock" symbol is displayed next to the folder name, so obviously, the folder is locked and that explains why I can't change the folder name. How do I change a folder's name under C:users?

Basically my cousin accidentally thought my new computer was his.. and he set it up all in his name and what not (lets go with the name STEVE).. I basically have changed the names of the login Everytime I goto Network..then click on BOB (let's just say that's my name), I see two things listed. Under Users.MY stupid cousin's name (STEVE) and then "public." When I try and change the folder's name to MY name (Bob), I always get this message:You need permission to perform this action You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder.I've already gone to control panel, User Accounts, changed the name to BOB and made it the Administrator.

I'm trying to share my external Hard Drive over my home network and I have sharing enabled on this drive, then I tried to get the other computers on my network to connect to it, It says they don't not have permission to connect. So then I tried to add permission in the Advanced Sharing settings, I tried to look for user accounts but it will only let me search for user accounts on this computer.

i am selling a laptop to a co-worker but am having troubles changing the user name. This is windows 7 home premium 64 bit. The folders under "users" are the "public" and then my name. I want to change it from my name to their name but it has a lock symbol on the folders icon and I cannot figure out how to do it.I was able to go into user accounts and change the name there, no problem. But the "users" folder will not change also.

I just installed a new 64 gig SSD in my computer. I also have a 2T secondary hard drive. The SSD is not big enough to contain all the stuff that will eventually be in "My documents",i.e. under "users" so I need to move the users directory to my secondary hard drive but havewindows behave as it were in its original location.I did some research and found the following technique which seemed plausible (and several people said it worked for them)
1. Install windows normally.
2. After install, boot from installation disk.
3. Get into the command prompt by clicking "repair".
4. Use robocopy to copy c:users to d:users. The command line should be: robocopy c:users d:users /mir /xj /copyall
5. Verify all files copied successfully.
6. Delete c:users. Command line should be: rmdir /s /q c:users
7. Delete c:documents and settings. Command line should be: rmdir "c:documents and settings"
8. Create junction to new users directory. Command line should be: mklink /j c:users d:users
9. Create junction for the old "documents and settings". Command line should be: mkdir /j "c:documents and settings" d:users
10. Restart computer.
Note:When in recovery mode the disk drives end up with different drive letters than what the normally have.Consequently my SSD drive which is "C" became "E" and my hard drive which is "D" became "C". Confusing, but I adjusted the above commands to reflect this. All seemed to go well until I rebooted. The computer booted up fine, but when I entered my password to log in windows complained that it could not find my profile. Since I could not log in at all I was forced to re-install windows. Supposedly, this is doable and I NEED to do it asap as my SSD will not hold all the stuff that will eventually be in "users".

I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.
So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.
Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?

My father replaced his Windows 98 machine with a new computer running Windows 7.He's currently on 32-bit ultimate, but we could change versions if needed. He's really hoping there's some way to force Windows 7 into a single user mode, primarily so C:usersAll Users, Default User, Public, and his own user are merged into one. It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.

I just got a new system with Win 7.I've been using XP since 2002 and I first used Windows in 1989 (version 2.11). The new computer is for my sole personal use.Because I dont need a nanny operating system I have turned UAC off. Being an adult I'll take full responsibility if I break something. Is there some way I can also turn off all this ACL stuff. I don't need it - its my computer, its my data, and I am the only person who uses the computer. If that means a reinstall then I can do that - I bought a Win 7 Pro 64bit licence. The only reasons I got 7 were symbolic links and libraries, but I'm wasting so much time jumping over needless security hurdles that I've yet to even look into them.I know all this stuff is relevant in a corporate environment - but this is my personal computer, its probably the last one I'll have - I dont need the hassle.

I asked their support the following: I want to take my Windows 7 Professional system and all installed applications and suites (Office 2010 H&S and CorelDRAW X5 included) all legit, registered, activated, updated, etc. and copy them so I can upgrade from a 5400 RPM hard disk to a new 7200 RPM hard disk in the same system. Can this program do all that, saving me the hassle of reinstalling, activating, registering, etc. the OS and applications and suites?Their answer: Yes, that's exactely (sic) what the software is for and what its same says (sic). You can copy your entire drive with your OS, programs and personal data. But today I went to their site again and found they have another app called Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 2.0, of which they say: Ready to upgrade to a new Solid State Drive (SSD)? Paragons Migrate OS to SSD is just what you need. Our handy intuitive wizard performs fast and safe Windows migrations to new storage devices (HDD or SSD) and even downsizes to smaller capacity drives. You can transfer a live system with no impact to your work, and have your partitions automatically aligned in the process if needed. Note that they say "migrations to new storage devices (HDD or SSD)".
My questions are:
- Does anyone here have experience with one of these apps or both?
- Considering my needs, is it OK if I purchase the less costly Migrate OS to SSD (but use it to copy to a new HD)?

My 3-year-old $300 Gateway desktop does not respond to the power switch which tests good. Rather than investing any more time or any money in this machine, I'm going to buy a new one.Can I just replace the new HD with the HD from the old PC so that it will be the boot drive? If not, is there a way to get everything from the old HD to the new one? (The new one will have Win 7 Home Premium. Can I install the Win 7 Ultimate that I had used on the Gateway on it?)

I turned my pc off for a couple of hours today and when I turned it back on everything was different! The desktop background is different (I think it reverted to blue-white bird puffs HP one), the icons are very small, Microsoft Word 2000 was gone, Google Chrome disappeared from lower tray! In addition, history disappeared from Firefox! (that is what I have noticed - so far). What is going on??I thought maybe that was some update but the most recent update was yesterday and was about MSecurity Essentials.I googled the problem and after I typed winword.exe- I found Microsoft Word, it sort of- reinstalled itself and now it looks a bit different.I went to Program FIles 86 to reinstall Microsoft Word shortcut on desktop, and it is there, however, it doesn't look like a Microsoft logo-as before, it looks like files .Also, all my documents were gone! So I did more "googling" and was able to find my MW docs this way: Computer-C-users-me-My Documents. However, I cannot access these documents through Microsoft Word any more! I can only find them through the above route.

I've been reading about win7 backup. It says that it wont back up program files, recycle bin and other things. I cant tell if these exclusions are only if windows chooses or also apply to when I choose. My question is: can I get win7 backup to backup everything on my C drive, and if so how do I proceed.

I decided to unistall the Search function from windows setup so it took out indexing, as no matter what I tired it always turned itself back on and started indexing crap again (even stuff I took out of its options etc.) Very annoying. But now that I don't have the Start Menu search box (like in step 7,) I wanted to know if there was a way to run stuff with the 'run as admin' from the 'Run' box in the start menu?
