Adding Files To Disk Sequentially Fragment It
Jun 14, 2012
I just completed adding several files to my newly defragmented disk, nothing else. But when I looked where things were placed, I saw that the disk was fragmented again. Why does this happen?

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and having the same problem. You can easily resolve the "Hidden File" problem by right clicking on the file, select Properties, and remove the check box next to "Hidden". If you tagged all the photos in a folder, simply select all (ctrl-A) and do the same. It solved the hidden file problem for me without having to show all hidden files. The problem I'm running into that I can't fix is that even after doing this, Carbonite now recognizes these files as system files and refuses to back them up. Even if you try to manually force Carbonite to back them up, it immediately unselects the check box. Hopefully somebody knows of a solution. It's weird, because I was tagging photos just a few weeks ago, and didn't have any problems at all. I don't know if there was an update at some point that screwed this all up.

I have a Toshiba laptop with W7 upgraded to SP1.I noticed that it adds autocheck autochk /r ??C: to the default autocheck autochk * in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager in regedit.Even if I modify it manually to autocheck autochk * it still adds autocheck autochk /r ??C,I don't think this is an administrator issue as my other laptop with W7 SP1 (SP1 included) does not have this problem.

I just installed a second hard disk on my MSI GT780 machine with 8GB of RAM, both drives are detected working perfectly. The old hdd, a generic 5400 rpm, is mainly for storage and the new one, 7200 rpm is where I installed my OS. Both are 500GB in capacity. The only thing I noticed is that I'm getting some lags, CPU usage would spike up to 90-100%, RAM never goes over 50% while gaming (Batman Arkham City and Battlefield 2). This never happened before I added the 2nd hdd and before then, I can have 2 games in the background (GTA4 & Battlefield 3) while browsing and music steaming with no problems at all. I updated the motherboard and VGA drivers after a fresh install on the new hdd.I'm using a 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate using the same installer I had for the old hd.

I regularly download useful programs and archives etc and would like to be able to add and edit info that shows up when you hover your mouse over the file. Generally downloaded archives etc are not very descriptive and I would like to add stuff to help me remember why I downloaded it in the first place!

I am planning to add some 1080p MKV files to a DVD+RW. I know I will probably have to convert them to a different format so that players can read them, but what format would you recommend I use and how should I go about it? Also I am wondering about the quality loss. To my understanding there will be a loss in quality, but will it be that significant? I want the video to look good, but I would like to use DVDs because I don't think my computer (Dell Inspiron N7110) can write to Blu-ray discs. And since that's the only way to put the files onto a Blu-ray (without buying a recorder for it) I am planning on using DVD+RW discs.

Ok, so my laptop pooed its pants and decided to break after numurous half successful attempts to fix it, as i had established it was a harddrive problem, i backed up my files onto 3 disks and system reset my laptop.I automatically backed them up, what i mean is i let the computer do it for me it scanned them and put them onto the disk and what not. So it got reset and i booted it back up did all the hoo haa and eventually got back to the main bit. it never explained to me how to re add all my backed up data and even though it recommends using disks whenever it mentions backing up data, when you look around the help pages all it talks about is internal backing up, so it gives you no clue of how to re-add all this data, which is very frustrating. It has all saved as .wim files, don't know why.

I have a bunch of videos on my computer, and I want to add some basic information for them, such as title, album information, and date. I can easily add the title and album information, but when it comes to the date (which I just want to be the year which the media was made in) it hardly ever works. Some files I can simply just right click on it, go to properties, click the detail tab and enter the year where it says media. [code] Does anyone know a way to fix this so that I can put a year for all my videos? I want this so that I can just sort all my videos by the year in which it was created.

I have Windows Media Player Version 12.0.7601.17514. I am trying to create a CD with mostly music (.wma) files but would like to add a few .jpg files. I can move all this (.wma + .jpg) over to the "list" file and them burn to a CD but it will not play on a CD player. I can open the CD through the CD tray on my computer and make the CD play, but this is not what I want. I want to give these CDs to family and friends so they can play on their CD players and car CDs without the .jpg files interfering. The .jpg files are only on the CD for people to find a picture and message I have left for them should they drop the CD into a computer. I see on the internet where people are discussing adding "album art" to files but this is not what I want to do. I just want the .jpg files to be separate from the .wma files and for the .wma files to play. How can I do this? PS when I burn a CD with only .wma (music) files, everything works well and the CD will play in any CD player and car CD.

I use adobe bridge so I do not need to view the contents of my files in any Windows Explorer window.

I just recently reformatted my pc and installed windows 7 Home Premium.Today I come to find that the Disk De-fragment tool is not working. When I click it nothing happens.I looked and found that the service is running, and I restarted it to be sure but still nothing. I have googled some similar problems but none had the answer I need.Even if I go to %windir%inf the file dfrg.inf does not exist. So this prevents me from simply installing it again.

I have a network share set up with everything working. My roommates can see, read, and download files from me, and my WDTV Live can play back music, videos, etc. These folders that are shared have Security settings with the user "Everyone" with Read & execute, List folder contents, and Read set to "Allow". The problem I'm having is when I add new files to a folder that is shared; it doesn't inherit this "Everyone" username permission to it's Security tab.

A while ago I got an external hard drive. It is one terabyte(I do know that is plenty of space). I moved all of my files to the hard drive. My computer is still telling me that I have low disk space and drive C is full. I am getting very annoyed due to the fact that I have been unable to use my computer for a year or so now. On a regular basis I clear history, defrag, scan, and do updates. I have a feeling I have a virus that is hidden or my computer is being very temperamental and hiding files.

When I want to copy files over files on my external hard disk, windows 7 keeps telling me I don't have enough disk space, but I know that when I overwrite the subdirectory that I am copying to, I'll have plent of disk space. Can I force windows to copy the files without having to delete the old subdirectory on my hard disk? Can I force windows to copy so it only copies the new file?

the storage disk in my server went bad (after 3 months!) and when I got the new one I copied everything over but some of the files aren't working right now.Specifically the video files that we stream over serviio. They look right, they're still the same size, if you go to properties it still shows them as .avi files, but they won't run.Is there someway that I can repair these files? I tried an .avi repair tool but it doesn't see the files as .avi.

After downloading the latest updates for Google Earth, I began getting a msg saying that "there is not enough disk space on your backup disk." When I attempted to clean it up, I was unable to free up any space. I have a LENOVO 570; the backup disk is labeled: Lenovo: D It says I have @ 10.6MB free out of 29GB Can I delete all the drivers and the applications from the D drive ? And then do a complete restore once the D drive is emptied?

I have a PC with a SSD C:/ drive that I use for program files only. I also have several other hard drives used for music, photos, etc... If I click on properties for my C drive, I see that 66GB of the total 96GB is used. That seemed high for just program files so I expanded the view and looked at each one.
Windows - 22.3GB
Users - 6.87GB
Prog 86 - 2.39
Prog - 0
NVidia - 207MB
Miller - 63.5MB
So you can see that I can only see about 33GB of what is supposed to be 65.9GB used. How can I see what is eating up the rest of the space? I went into Ctl Panel and clicked on View Hidden Files but still only see about half of what the system says in on the disk.

Lately I had problems playing video-files (hd content, mkv container) on my WD HD TV. Turned out that the files were corrupted when after copying to the usb disk. First I was afraid my Intel X25-m was the culprit, but windiff proved that the error occurred after copying, and there was a difference between the file on my SSD and the copy on the usb disk.
After trying all the USB ports on my laptop (MSI pr200, T7700, 4GB, Windows 7 HP 64), the CABLE proved to be the culprit. I use different cables, the one causing problems was an old motorola razr....After trying the cable that came with the 500GB Verbatim USB disk the problem is gone, and windiff says the files are equal.Just to let you searchers know (fingers crossed!): issue seems to be resolved by using a good cable.

I just bought a new computer with a 256 disk partitioned into 2 drives: C (called OS) and D (Data). The computer writes everything to the smaller C drive, leaving D completely empty.I only have about 25G left on C and would like to find a way to change the way files are saved or some other workaround that will let me take advantage of the entire disk.I am not a very tech person - a mid-level user, so I need a solution, which will not create problems of programs not recognizing their paths afterwards.

I have a 500 GB SimpleTech hard drive (outboard) that I recently discovered to be full. Upon exploring its contents, I discovered many backup files and have no idea how/why they were created. I deleted several of the older files to make room for files I wished to store, and then explored further. On the hard drive, I find one folder named HPLAPTOP01 and another named WindowsImageBackup, between them holding many GB worth of files with names: Backup Set yyyy-mm-dd xxxxxx. Is Win 7 creating these backups, or is the SimpleTech drive doing it?

I am trying to get several peoples opinion. I believe that a small disk that is bootable similar to a ssd is better that a large one full of data. There is less disk to deframent and it should be faster. The larger data disk will contain most of the files many of which will not be used a large part of the time. One can keep larger files such as pictures or videos in that data disk. I probably prefer a small ssd(less than 100GB) but am not sure that is the best way to go right now. Later on when the price and quality of ssd goes down I could substitute that drive for the small hd partition or drive.
