Windows 7 adds the .jpg xtension to many of my files which are for example:
Adobe InDesign files
Photoshop PSD files
Camera RAW files
Adobe PDF file
how I can prevent Windows from doing this? I archive my files according to the program they are created in and I need to keep all my with file original xtension.
I use adobe bridge so I do not need to view the contents of my files in any Windows Explorer window.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI dragged a web address off and Windows created a shortcut. I was able to change the extension to .txt. The icon changed to that for a text file, and I could open the file and read it.
Since then, though, the url extension does not show up. If I select Rename and add .txt to the part of the filename showing, it evidently retains the url extension after the .txt extension because the icon doesn't change to the one for a text file, I'm not allowed to edit it, and selecting open results in it opening the web page - i.e., acting like it is still a .url file.
I have checked Tools -> View many times and the box for hiding common extensions is unchecked so that is not the problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and having the same problem. You can easily resolve the "Hidden File" problem by right clicking on the file, select Properties, and remove the check box next to "Hidden". If you tagged all the photos in a folder, simply select all (ctrl-A) and do the same. It solved the hidden file problem for me without having to show all hidden files.The problem I'm running into that I can't fix is that even after doing this, Carbonite now recognizes these files as system files and refuses to back them up. Even if you try to manually force Carbonite to back them up, it immediately unselects the check box. Hopefully somebody knows of a solution. It's weird, because I was tagging photos just a few weeks ago, and didn't have any problems at all. I don't know if there was an update at some point that screwed this all up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOne of my .avi files got the extension twice, not able to play in vlc media player, but it plays smooth in Windows media player. I don't now how it happened, but tried to rename it, still appears the same. When I looked in to the file properties it says the file having extension,(.avi) (.avi).!!! Thought of converting the whole file to some other format, sadly video converting program not able to open as it says unknown format!!!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to be able to upload jpeg files to our website and the software package I use for that requires that the filename be entered in lower case in the format "filename.jpg". However, I've recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 and note that JPG is being added in uppercase after my typed fileneme so that I end up with "filename.jpg.JPG" which is rejected by the uploading software. My web designer tells me that this is attributable to automatic file type recognition in Windows 7, and not to the upload software. How can I switch that off?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSince last Tuesday's Microsoft Windows Update, my Windows Explorer is experiencing a number of issues.The update hung for hours on "preparing to update" or some such thing.I had to manually shut the computer off several times and finally tried the safe mode start, which warned me that the update was not fully done.Now, when I click on Favorites/My Documents, it hangs; like it is searching but when the shaded bar gets to the end, it stays there and Explorer freezes. When I click on any the window, it goes whitish and a message pops up asking if I want to continue waiting or should the program be closed. I shut the program down.If I click any other item on Favorites or Libraries, even Documents within Libraries, Explorer does ok.
When I try to save a file in Photoshop or Dreamweaver or any other program, a message pops up saying the program failed to respond and gives me the option to wait or close the program.Even if I try to print to PDF, it does the same thing.In other words any time I need to save any item from within any program, the programs freeze. I even changed the save folder in PDF Phantom, from documents to downloads and still it won't save.My next step will probably be PC Restore and to hell with everything.
I regularly download useful programs and archives etc and would like to be able to add and edit info that shows up when you hover your mouse over the file. Generally downloaded archives etc are not very descriptive and I would like to add stuff to help me remember why I downloaded it in the first place!

I know I will probably have to convert them to a different format so that players can read them, but what format would you recommend I use and how should I go about it? Also I am wondering about the quality loss. To my understanding there will be a loss in quality, but will it be that significant? I want the video to look good, but I would like to use DVDs because I don't think my computer (Dell Inspiron N7110) can write to Blu-ray discs. And since that's the only way to put the files onto a Blu-ray (without buying a recorder for it) I am planning on using DVD+RW discs.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOk, so my laptop pooed its pants and decided to break after numurous half successful attempts to fix it, as i had established it was a harddrive problem, i backed up my files onto 3 disks and system reset my laptop.I automatically backed them up, what i mean is i let the computer do it for me it scanned them and put them onto the disk and what not. So it got reset and i booted it back up did all the hoo haa and eventually got back to the main bit. it never explained to me how to re add all my backed up data and even though it recommends using disks whenever it mentions backing up data, when you look around the help pages all it talks about is internal backing up, so it gives you no clue of how to re-add all this data, which is very frustrating.It has all saved as .wim files, don't know why.

I can easily add the title and album information, but when it comes to the date (which I just want to be the year which the media was made in) it hardly ever works. Some files I can simply just right click on it, go to properties, click the detail tab and enter the year where it says media. [code] Does anyone know a way to fix this so that I can put a year for all my videos? I want this so that I can just sort all my videos by the year in which it was created.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Windows Media Player Version 12.0.7601.17514. I am trying to create a CD with mostly music (.wma) files but would like to add a few .jpg files. I can move all this (.wma + .jpg) over to the "list" file and them burn to a CD but it will not play on a CD player. I can open the CD through the CD tray on my computer and make the CD play, but this is not what I want. I want to give these CDs to family and friends so they can play on their CD players and car CDs without the .jpg files interfering. The .jpg files are only on the CD for people to find a picture and message I have left for them should they drop the CD into a computer. I see on the internet where people are discussing adding "album art" to files but this is not what I want to do. I just want the .jpg files to be separate from the .wma files and for the .wma files to play. How can I do this? PS when I burn a CD with only .wma (music) files, everything works well and the CD will play in any CD player and car CD.

My roommates can see, read, and download files from me, and my WDTV Live can play back music, videos, etc. These folders that are shared have Security settings with the user "Everyone" with Read & execute, List folder contents, and Read set to "Allow". The problem I'm having is when I add new files to a folder that is shared; it doesn't inherit this "Everyone" username permission to it's Security tab.
View 2 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I picked up a particularly nasty trojan that began running ads in my desktop background - Just audio, but still annoying. I tried removing it using Malwarebytes and Spybot. Oddly enough, since then, I've had further problems. One is the browser redirects randomly to spam sites but the bigger one is I cannot access my documents (music, video etc...) or certain folders in cFor example, I have a folder on the c: drive called work. When I click on work, it comes up as totally empty - no files. When I right click it, however, I find there are 193 files at 3 gb. My document folders have also disappeared. When I go to windows / user I find by right clicking that there are hundreds of files at 40 or so gb but I cannot find any of them by searching or exploring. I have made sure all folders are on general view (ie: not just music / video etc) but this does nothing. I now just want to back up my files and blitz the PC with a full reinstall

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 64GB SSD drive and wanted to change the location of Public Documents, Public Music, etc in the Library to my storage drive rather than using the smaller C drive. I already did this with My Documents, My Music, My Pictures. The redirect was successful (going to the folder properties, then location and move) but then I decided it wasn't necessary and restored the default location (C:UsersPublicDocuments).ich leads to my question. After restoration, everything seems fine except I noticed the Public Documents folder in the Library no longer contains the padlocked inaccessible files named "My Music", "My Pictures" and "My Videos". Also, under :Users(name)AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsLibrariesDocuments.library-ms, I no longer see the files with the blue arrow icons (Also named My Music, My Pictures and My Videos) or the padlocked files of the same names.Will this potentially cause problems in the future? I've been trying to educate myself on Windows 7 over the past couple of years but the phantom files and shortcuts always confuse me I already restored the Public Documents folder to an earlier version but the missing files didn't reappear. I only have the desktop.ini and Thumbs.db files.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI noticed I had two copies of the My Documents folder, one in my user folder where I want it, and the other buried deep in my pictures folder (I think I accidentally dragged and dropped it there once when I was trying to change the order of icons in the navigation pane). I deleted the one in my pictures folder, and both folders disappeared! I closed the screen out, re-opened "my computer," and see both My Documents folders back, but empty.
1) How can I recover my files? My last backup was last week, and I've written quite a bit since then. I was actually about to back up again when I saw the annoying second folder and deleted it, not realizing they were linked. The folder was too large and bypassed the recycle bin.
2) How can I fix the two folders issue? I have the same problem with my music folder also, and have had problems with the folders under my username seeming to disappear, reappear, and move for no apparent reason. The computer has Windows 7 Professional.

I have done this method for a number of year.In feb 2012, I checked in a file, under last years folder date, and all good.However, last week, I went to check on a couple of files, and noticed that the FOLDER icon had a padlock on it.As i have no idea how to put a padlock on. View 4 Replies View RelatedI had been thinking about upgrading to Windows 7 for sometime, and after my Raid array failed I wasn't forced to but it happened to be perfect timing.
Instead of waiting till my replacement drive arrived, I installed Windows 7 on a different drive temporarily.
After I received my new drive, I setup my array again and installed Windows 7 once again without a hitch. After installing all of my programs, games, etc. I started to notice both the User folder and Documents & Settings folders were both identical and were being updated simultaneously.
I know I didn't properly remove the old installation, but I've never seen Windows do this before. Very Odd. I've formatted the other drive and everything is good now, but I thought it was odd and wondered if it was a bug or a known issue.
