Files Corrupt After Copy To Usb Hard Disk
Feb 13, 2010
Lately I had problems playing video-files (hd content, mkv container) on my WD HD TV. Turned out that the files were corrupted when after copying to the usb disk. First I was afraid my Intel X25-m was the culprit, but windiff proved that the error occurred after copying, and there was a difference between the file on my SSD and the copy on the usb disk.
After trying all the USB ports on my laptop (MSI pr200, T7700, 4GB, Windows 7 HP 64), the CABLE proved to be the culprit. I use different cables, the one causing problems was an old motorola razr....After trying the cable that came with the 500GB Verbatim USB disk the problem is gone, and windiff says the files are equal.Just to let you searchers know (fingers crossed!): issue seems to be resolved by using a good cable.

OS: Dual-boot Windows XP Professional x32, Windows 7 Ultimate x64. (Windows XP earlier OS)CPU: AMD Athlon 7750 x2RAM: 4GBGPU: Nvidia GeForce 9500gtHDD: Seagate 500GB. For the last two days whenever I am starting my PC, just after the MB logo, I am shown a black screen where at the bottom it is written 4th Master Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD. On searching the net, I found that it indicates my HDD is dying. I am going to buy a new one. How do I transfer the data from the old one to the new HDD? I am not concerned about installed programs, only things like data files, images, songs and such things

Today my Windows 7 laptop wouldn't boot, returning a persistent Windows Boot Manager error 0xC00000e9. It recommended allowing Windows to start in a diagnostic state, which didn't work. I pulled the hard drive and put it in a USB adapter which I plugged into another Windows 7 system. I was glad to see all the normal directories off the root. When I tried to change directories to UsersFrank to copy off some critical files, it said I didn't have sufficient permission. What I need to do to accomplish this? I thought I was logged in as Administrator on the second system while examining the drive. Later I may try putting the drive back into my laptop and booting off a CD to try to repair the disk, but my highest priority is to get some critical files off the drive as soon as possible.

I had an issue where Windows 7 would not boot anymore, getting error, BOOTMGR missing, Press Alt-Ctrl-Del to restart. I have tried to repair with windows disk but still getting error. I have decided that I want to just do a reinstall but I want to get on and export my favorites and grab a couple other things. I used to have a CD that I could use to boot up with (Think it was called Barts Boot Disk, Been too long) to get into Windows XP and do a couple things. My question is, is what is the best boot disk that will allow me to copy files from the HD to my external drive before I refresh?

I have a Dell inspiron 1545 with a pretty measly hard drive of 135gb. I have an old hard drive from another laptop which is 320gb and i'm wanting to upgrade. I have done this before but i just used all the installation disks to reinstall windows and everything onto the new hard drive. This time however, i want to be able to copy the whole contents of my current hard drive onto the new one so that when i swap them over and i boot up the computer it contains the operating system, software and files that are currently on the 135gb hard drive. I presume there is some sort of wires, software and housing that i might need to achieve this. So far i have been pointed in the direction of this software pack (Apricorn EZ Upgrade Universal Hard Drive Upgrade Kit (SATA and PATA 2.5" Notebook Drives) Deals, #EZ-UP-UNIVERSAL - Expansys.com UK) but i was wondering if there was a cheaper way to perform the required task.
I was also wondering if the new hard drive will affect battery life. The new one spins at 7200rpm compared to the old at 5400rpm.

I have a 500 GB SimpleTech hard drive (outboard) that I recently discovered to be full. Upon exploring its contents, I discovered many backup files and have no idea how/why they were created. I deleted several of the older files to make room for files I wished to store, and then explored further. On the hard drive, I find one folder named HPLAPTOP01 and another named WindowsImageBackup, between them holding many GB worth of files with names: Backup Set yyyy-mm-dd xxxxxx. Is Win 7 creating these backups, or is the SimpleTech drive doing it?

I've bought a Toshiba STOR.E D10 Zwart 1,5TB so that I can use e-SATA to connect it to my laptop. I've got a HP Probook 6555b with Windows 7 64bits. When I use the USB connection (this hard disk has both USB an eSATA) all works fine, no problem at all. When I connect it with the eSATA cable I can find the external hard disc and brwose through the files that are on it. However when I try to move files from my laptop onto the hard disk (or the other way around) after about 10 seconds it slows down and stops half way copying. Next Windows Explorer is not responding.

Yesterday, I just reinstall fresh windows 7. After I install the OS, I just realize that my recycle bin is empty. Before I installed windows 7, some of my deleted files on my other hard disk is there. But now, I could not find it anymore. After that, I tried to select show hidden folder, files, and drives and unsellect hide protected operating system files on folder options. I try to browse to one of my hard disk, which has the deleted files on recycle bin before, then I found it the recycle bin icon there as well (For instance, the path of the drive is: N:$RECYCLE.BIN). I tried to look at the properties, and I found that the missing size of the deleted files was on there. The problem is I cannot access it. When I tried to open the recycle bin, it just empty. I need some help with this. How do I retrieve the files again to the OS recycle bin, not the hard disk recycle bin? Is it possible to access it again? I really need those files back.

How can I get Windows 7 to name copied files using the scheme "Copy of" (used in Windows XP and earlier) instead of the default scheme "- Copy", whenever a file is copied to the same directory as the original file?In other words, if you copy a file named "Foo.txt" in a directory to the same directory, Windows XP would have named that file "Copy of Foo.txt", but Windows 7 names the file "Foo - Copy.txt". I want the copy to be named "Copy of Foo.txt".There are several reasons why I prefer the XP style file name:
1. It is familiar :-)
2. I have existing files that use the XP style file names, and I want all my file copies to use the same naming scheme. I guess I can do a massive file rename across all my backups, but that would solve only one of my problems.
3. Most of my folders are sorted by name, and using XP style would sort all copies together. On other forums it has been suggested that one can simply sort by date (to get the copies sorted together), but that advice assumes that all copies are created after all other files are created, which is actually not often the case.
4. I often work with long file names, which means that the end of the file name is often obscured, unless I have wide windows (not always possible) and use lots of horizontal scrolling every time I want to select a file. Hovering over a file to get its full name is a cumbersome solution.
5. On other forums some have given the advice to always make copies in subfolders, but I often make copies or copies of copies while I work (it allows me to roll back or to check earlier versions of a file quickly, during my work), and using subfolders would slow me down tremendously (not to mention confuse me).
I know that when TeraCopy is made the copy handler, it renames files in a different way than Windows 7 does, though unfortunately not the way Windows XP did it. Also, if one installs a third-party directory program such as Opus, it asks for a file name every time a copy is made, but I need something that simply names the file correctly immediately.

I was wondering if this msdt.exe corrupt error is caused by a win32 worm?
A Chkdsk was performed but errors keep happening. Also this msdt.exe error pops up while browsing the internet.
I am trying to help somebody else with this issue.... my own pc is ok.
I suggested that he run malwarebtyes and he said the scan came back clean.
so, he did a clean install of the RC on the same partiton that used to have the Beta. he is now getting the msdt.exe error and also he is getting winsat.exe corrupt error when trying to run windows index experience.
I am kinda stumped, I goggled it and all things seem to point to a possible infected pc?
registry errors?

no problems with Vista in another partition nor with XP.
I scanned the (two year old) hard drive with tool downloaded from Seagate
and found no problem.
I have just installed the newly released Windows 7 on a different partition and the same problem is happening. Any clues as to why this is happening and why should it only happen to Windows 7 and why now?

I have a toshiba with a windows 7 64bit, and it's been acting really slow recently and freezing up on me so I thought there might be viruses that I needed to get rid of, so I restarted my computer so I could go in safe mode with networking to check if there really were. When I restarted my computer I momentarily forgot to press the f8 key and the windows starting screen with the logo showed up. Without thinking I turned off my computer since I didn't want to restart again (it took forever for the computer to do). Once I turned the laptop on again I ended up going to system repair. For some reason this did nothing to my computer. I left it on for hours and hours until I finally decided I wasn't going to get any results. I once again restarted the laptop but this time when I went to system repair I cancelled it and when into more options and tried doing a system restore which also didn't work and said a bunch of my files couldn't be read. When I looked back at the system repair log it said "system volume on disk is corrupt." I googled it trying to find something to help me, and every place said to run sfc scan, which I did on command prompt, which always gave me the reply "there's a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete" and since my computer can't reboot properly no matter what this is what it'll say. Is there some way to run this scan or another way to fix my computer without having to lose all my data? I have some really important files on here. I've also tried running chkdsk /r /f in command prompt which it wouldn't let me do and said it can't lock the current drive because the type of file sytem is NTFS.

My wife shout down her computer this morning took it on remote location for work today but never booted it up. When she got back home tonight it wouldn't boot up. I don't know what to call these screen but some Startup Repair screen. Just says Repair action: Boot sector repair, Result: Failed.I downloaded and burned to CD the boot CD for the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition but I don't know what disk I am even looking for. I see 3 partitions listed for one disk. The only one with a label is BDEDrive and it's 300 MB. The other two have *: as what I would call a label. One is 297.79 GB and the other is 12.34 MB. The BDEDrive is the only with with status of Active. NTFS on that partition and Other on the big partition.

I have a bit of an odd problem, I have an external USB 640gb hard drive (Freecom ToughDrive with Password encryption software removed using Freecom tool), I use it at home (on a new dell Windows 7 64 bit PC) to store all my dataIf I take the drive into the office and plug it into my machine there (Windows XP) I can read all the files, copy them off, no problem, same with my Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop that I have at home as well and on my Mum's (windows 7) laptop. The problem is that if I open a file on any of the non home PC's (a word document or a JPG etc) if I then save changes to the file, when I try to open it on the home machine it either says it is corrupted/unreadable or that in the case of a folder of documents I copied on yesterday in the office - that the folder contents were not accessible.
I have just tried opening a word (2003) doc that I saved on the drive in the office yesterday on my home machine and word shows that it is goobledygook, I have closed the file (without saving or editing on the home machine) unplugged the drive and plugged the drive into my windows 7 laptop and when I view the folder with the word file in, the file has now gone...I have also noticed that when I have created this 'corrupted' file situation, when I then plug the drive into a different machine I get the windows "scan and fix" option. I have done that in the past and it has 'found' all the files that I corrupted on the other machines and stuck them in a $found folder as though there was actual hard drive corruption.Until about 6 months ago I had a Windows XP machine and have been working with an external USB drive for years switching it between many different machines - I thought it was the drive (I originally had a freecom toughdrive 320gb) at first so I replaced that about 2 months ago when I realised what was going on but it hasn't made any difference.

I was getting notification bubbles in W7 about many of my .exe files being corrupt, including chrome.exe and a few other programs. The notifications recommended that I run Chkdsk, so I went to the C: properties and chose Disk Cleanup, or whatever Chkdsk is called in the menu, I forget at the moment. Well, when I did that, I got yet another notification, this time saying that Chkdsk.exe is corrupt, and recommending that I run Chkdsk (lol). Well, I apparently chose to schedule Chkdsk to run on next startup. But after I shut down to let it run I booted up and after my Dell screen I get....nothing.
Just a blinking horizontal bar, looks like that little input cursor flipped on its side, in the top left corner. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on a USB flash drive at the moment, what can I do from here? Until this happened I've never used a Linux OS before so I'm not very savvy with it yet, but when I view my partitions on here (500GB HDD) I see that 451GB is Unknown, in a partition manager there is a red flag notification saying that I have bad sectors, which I already knew. I've heard a lot about running a program called ntfsprogs, but I can't find it. Is there any way to recover my Windows 7 boot without losing any of my data on there?

I have run sfc/scannow in win 7, and have followed instructions to run sfc at boot in command prompt, but nothing has solved the errors. i have saved the file sfcdetails.txt to desktop, and have extracted only the problematic parts and saved it in another file problems.txt kindly check the file, as i have attached it here.
all the files are either .inf or with .nlp extensions.windows is running fine. but i want to get rid of the problems before they become a serious issue. I have a pre-installed OEM version of win 7 basic SP 1, and i have a HP G6-1117TX laptop. There is a drive named "System", which is the active and boot-able partition, and is not the same drive where windows is installed.
