After three days of bliss with Vista Ultimate x64 I've already had it. Could someone give me a hint where Vista moved the files I thought I was dragging across the LAN onto my new desktop. I'd like to have them back when I get XP Pro x64 installed.
View 6 Repliesrecently any files i either a) delete/move in bulk while holding the CTRL button or b) entire folders i delete, have been reappearing when my computer restarts after shutdown. the deletion shows up in my recycle bin or the destination i moved it to, but it's like another copy appears in its place. these have so far been .mp3 or .jpg files (i haven't tried it on any other kind). i've emptied the recycle bin and they still appear. what could be causing this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using Vista Enterprise at work and had to move cubicles. I copied all my documents from my old computer (also Vista Enterprise) and my favorites folder to a thumb drive, then without thinking coppied them all back to the Documents folder on this computer.
Now instead of IE7 looking in the C:Usersmy_name directory for the Favorites folder it or i have somehow created another favorites folder inside my old favorites folder in Documents and it's looking for the favorites there.
How do i redirect IE7 to find my favorites in the Favorites folder in the User folder?
Somehow, my Links folder (the one that contains the "favorite links" in the left panel of an explorer window) got moved into my Pictures folder --> C:Users(my name)PicturesLinks. This must have happened quite some time ago... I think it should be located here: C:Users(my name)Links - correct? If I right click and go into properties, the location tab allows me to move this folder. I get two messages - one asking me if I really want to move the folder and its contents (it's just some shortcuts), and the second if I want to direct the Links folder into another system folder "Profile" located at C:Users(my name). It also says if I proceed with the redirection I will not be able to separate them or restore the default location... I don't quite get what that means...

Tried this command as an administrator in E:UsersGordon: icacls favorites /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low. got he error "can't find folder".
I don't a lot of stuff and usually it all ends up on the desktop. It usually stays there for a while and annoys me. Is there a way that I can download to desktop ,but as soon as the file hits the desktop its moved to another file. So there is no desktop icons at all?

I think I have deleted these files a while ago but when i search for them they show up
as 0 bytes.
I tried - creating a new folder with the same name and putting those files in and then deleting them, but doesn't work. I tried Hijack this and delete on reboot, can't open as file does not exist for deletion.
Yesterday, the Windows Mail shortcut that had been in the pop-up list in the left of the task bar moved to the desktop. I do not want that shortcut on the desktop. How do I get it back in the pop-up list?

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy computer crashed & I had to repair the system. The User that I entered is "xxxxxx". When I restored my backup files to their original location my mail box, which I had relocated from its default location to "Documents", reinstalled to the user name of my original installation "xxx". I then started Windows Mail and selected the mail box to that location. However when I try to restart Windows Mail I get the following "Windows Mail could not be started. The application was unable to openthe Windows Mail message store. Your Windows Mailmailbox data is currently being used by another program...............(0x800C0155)"When I click OK I get a window showing "Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Is there a solution other than repairing Vista again?

Since I am a very slow typist and take time to research info it is not good for me. Can someone tell me how to lengthen the time to about 10 min. before it transfers the msg.?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently switched from an XP machine to a Vista machine (yes, I am an old newbie). I retained most of my programs. However, they do not behave the same. In particular, under XP if I did a Ctrl-Click on a link (e.g., table of contents page in MS Word) I would be moved to the link target.
However, under Vista I get the message "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effecxt on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." Since I am the system administrator, and only user, on this machine, this doesn't he;[ much. I assume it has something to do with some security setting in Vista but have been unable to figure out where or how to "fix" it.
Admittedly I may have done something to cause this but I can not get it right: Vista Home premium, 32 bit. New User, new PC. Had all data and music files on external HDD's. Moved data (documents, pictures) over last week, and moved Music files over to C drive today.
On Taskbar, at Start button, click on button, On right side of Start menu there are: under my picture, choices for "Me (user)", Documents, Pictures, Music, Games, then a divide and then, Search, Recent Items, Computer and so on. If I click on Documents I go to the folder with files of documents. Same with Pictures. The files from both Documents and Pictures came from an external HDD.............

View 9 Replies View RelatedRight now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
I was discussing Vista with a few friends over on a Linux website. They say: Vista will not play MPEG or MP3 files if Vista thinks they are illegal downloads. Vista will not allow you to store downloaded music. Vista calls home every day to tell MS what programs, keystrokes and internet sites you use. Vista will not allow you to Copy a DVD for your own home use as a backup. Is any of this true? I have yet to have any problems. I do value what little privacy I can get so if Vista calls home everyday that's crap...

I have recently moved over to a new PC and backed up all my previous PC.
But when I go to open it it doesn't recognise the file ending.
I would like to create 2 paging files, one on C: and the other on an eSata external drive. I've heard 2 sides of how. One to let the computer decide (System Managed Size) on both drives, and the other to have a static page file on both as to eliminate fragmentation. System Managed or a Static pagefile? And if a static, how large on both. I have 4G Ram?

When I try to do any of the modifying such as deleting... a windows box comes up saying it's trying to delete but nothing happens. It's not being used by any program.... and i've been able to delete the file using safe mode but it's a bit of a hastle to do that everytime
when i open the folder containing one of these files, a windwos vista bubble ppears from the bottom right saying something like the viewing mode has been changed to vista basic....
I just bought a gatway laptop with vista and also have another laptop with xp. I have a network set up. Both laptops can get on that network wirelessly and can get on the internet with both. Now the PROBLEM, my xp laptop (wireless) sees the vista laptop (wireless) but the vista laptop doesn't see the xp laptop.
I have made the vistat laptop private and turned on all sharing. I also tried to double click the vista laptop icon(on the xp laptop) but got the error message (not authorized...). What steps do I need to take to get the two computers sharing?

When I was running XP, I put some personal files in a special encrypted folder, but I forgot to decrypt it when I backed it up to install Vista. Now, everytime I try to open one of the still encrypted files, I get the message saying "Access Denied".

This one may not be AV related so thought I would ask here.
I have been unzipping files in Vista with no problem, after the download of AVG 9 I am unable to open them.
When I right click on the file I do not get Extract all in the list.
I do not know which is the program that opens zip files within Vista and so I am unable to tell it which program to Open with.
